im reluctant to give exact times bc before i lowkey got people getting mad bc i didn't uphold my word

usually when that happens its bc i think of a scene I want to add and just decide to hold off uploading j to let ugs know i dont mean to be unreliable i just have a weird need to overinclude things

that being said i am essentially 90% done and am planning on uploading before i pass out so im thinking 7 am (don't judge my sleep schedule, my user is restlessnights for a reason lol)

the reason this chapter took so long was because i was going to originally going to make these two different chapters, but decided i wanted to get certain scenes out bc ik ugs been waiting patiently <3

this chapter is now projected 16k words bc of this choice btw

On a bright summer’s day, a group of friends went on a hike on a long, rarely-used trail. The designated planner of the group over-estimated the length of the light day, and halfway through their hike, the sun began to set, much to the groups’s dismay that they very loudly expressed at the failed planner. Everyone understood that continuing their journey, navigating the darkness, the uneven road and the gradually thickening forest would be too dangerous. And understanding that behind them the conditions were not mich better, they settled on going to the cabin they saw earlier and asking the residents to let them stay the night.

They knocked on the door just as the sun dipped behind the horizon, and upon hearing no response, let themselves in. The cabin didn’t seem abandoned- the pantry was stocked, the beds were made, and there were plenty painting supplies and art pieces themselves all around the cabin.

Upon sparing the paintings more than a second glance, the travelers noticed that the paintings depicted a twisted version of the forest: the night a little too inky, the trees a little too tall, animals a little too long, deformed even, their eyes a little too smart, too predatory, too thirsty for blood, the dampness around their mouths a little too dark. One of the hikers remarked the owner of the cabin being a horror lover. That eased the built up tension greatly, everyone breathed out as one.

Everyone settled down, leaving a note explaining their situation in case the resident showed up while they were sleeping.

No one slept calmly that night. The forest seemed to be pushing down on them, suffocating, overwhelming. The typical peaceful quiet of the forest was suddenly multiplied and echoed; the soft trickle of the river sounded like a raging flood, the beetles zooming around became drones, the animals stepping in the crunchy leaves became a stampede. The clean air now seemed too thin to be suitable for people, too scarce as if a fire consumed it all, the kerosene lamp faded into the shadows, but the moonlight shone brighter than a stage light in the dark.

The hikers rose with the sun. The restlessnight was now insignificant due to the adrenaline that coursed through their veins as 3 horrifying truths dawned on them: the paintings were in reality windows, one of them was shattered, and despite dark, muddy hoof-prints leading from the window into the house, no hoof-prints led out.

An airplane tricks me into thinking it is a star. A shame, a thought an another one had shown up. The one that has been in my view for all this time is almost.. Blinking? What kind of event am I witnessing? By what metric have I and all others, who are having restlessnights, been chosen to peer into the past of this distant star?

It seems dimmer. I am concerned for it. Surely I hadn't just seen its death? And the amount of time information takes to reach me.. If this is its death, what kind of novelty has emerged in its absence?

...

I wouldn't be able to know. My life will end long before it.
