Thank you for your point of view, Hiro... you have inspired me always. Rest in Picture. Hiro was a bright star of fashion photography in the late 1960's and early 70's and then all but dropped off the map; his career to date is a salutary reminder that talent and fame are not synonymous. His onetime mentor and colleague, Richard Avedon stated that “Hiro's photographs are all about pristine elegance and Surrealist surprise.” #riphiro #hirowakabayashi #restinpicture #photographer #elsaperetti #tiffanys #japaneseamericanphotographer #icon #photomaster #dontimitate #inspiration #bipocartists #bipocjewelrydesigner #footfirst #hooffirst #harrywinston #bijulesbrigade #bijulesjewelry #bijulesinspo #toeup #rednail #nailring #bijulesnailring #blueredwhite #surrealism (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSwlFY4jMZW/?utm_medium=tumblr

Steve Schapiro died Saturday, but it was announced today... He was 87 years old... He was an amazing photographer who photographed everyone from MLK, Muhammed Ali, Barbara Streisand, David Bowie, Ray Charles to Andy Warhol... As we artist say ' the man had an eye'... Sad that he died over the MLK holiday weekend since he photographed the March on Washington in 1963, the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination... He died of pancreatic cancer... After reading a text James Baldwin had written he was inspired to work with Baldwin on an assignment for LIFE magazine traveling through the South and photographing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Fred Shuttlesworth, and Jerome Smith... and along the way creating some of the most iconic images of the Civil Rights era... In 2017 TASCHEN books published a book of Steve Schapiro's photography alongside text by James Baldwin called THE FIRE NEXT TIME... i had already owned Steve Schapiro's TAXI DRIVER and THE GODFATHER FAMILY ALBUM (he was the on set photographer on those films...) TASCHEN had an event at their then Soho store with Steve Schapiro talking to the great journalist Herb Boyd about his work photographing those crucial moments in the Civil Rights era with James Baldwin... When i went to the talk you know i had to bring my TAXI DRIVER and THE GODFATHER FAMILY ALBUM with me on the chance he would sign those... And both the good folks at Taschen and Steve Schapiro were kind and generous enough to allow it... Steve was surprised that i had his other books, and he was so gracious that he signed all three of my books... In my THE FIRE NEXT TIME book he signed - he wrote "STAY INSPIRED IN THIS WORLD OF OURS - BEST STEVE SCHAPIRO" #jamesbaldwin #MLK #CivilRights #steveschapiro #TheFireNextTime #Taschen #TaxiDriver #TheGodfatherFamilyAlbum #restinpictures #vagabond https://www.instagram.com/vgbnd/p/CY2A_UVJXC1/?utm_medium=tumblr

Lynn Shelton (1965 - 2020) was a leading director of neo American independent cinema of the 2000s. Her simplistic DIY approach of comedy and drama led to a surge of the mumblecore movement with films like HUMPDAY and YOUR SISTER’S SISTER. Danny Aiello (1933 - 2019) was the New York-born stage and screen actor with over 45 years in the business. In his second on-screen performance, Danny's Italian lineage and intimidating stature made him the perfect fit for Tony Rosato in Coppola's GODFATHER PART II. He would later become a well-known character actor lending his talents to movies like Woody Allen's THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, and Norman Jewison's MOONSTRUCK. However, Danny was most well known for his Oscar-nominated performance in Spike Lee's groundbreaking DO THE RIGHT THING as the owner of Sal's Pizzeria in Bed Stuy. #RestInPictures #RIP #DannyAiello https://www.instagram.com/p/B6BO0rklMXj/?igshid=1eqqpwu9hx72t

Ron Cobb (2020) was a Disney animator turned production designer on some of the biggest movies in cinema. At 17, Ron began his career as an “inbetweener” animator on SLEEPING BEAUTY. Cobb would also become known for his editorial political cartoons and the covers for Forest Ackerman’s FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND Magazine. Ron would later move into production design after working with Dan O’Bannon on John Carpenter’s DARK STAR. From there Ron would create design work for The Nostromo in ALIEN, crafting Cantina aliens in STAR WARS, time machined The DeLorean in BACK TO THE FUTURE, designed the vehicles of THE LAST STARFIGHTER, drafted the underwater gear of THE ABYSS, and fleshed out the look of Milius’ fantasy epic for CONAN THE BARBARIAN. In 1980, Ron met Steven Spielberg while directing RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Steven had Ron start storyboarding one of his future films, WATCH THE SKIES. A follow up to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS about a true-life claim of a Kentucky family's alien encounter. Steven hired John Sayles pen the screenplay and a number of Ron's ideas were incorporated into the fairly menacing and horrific first-draft titled NIGHT SKIES. Impressed by Ron's work, Steven offered him to direct despite him never directing anything before. But the project didn't go much further after Steven had a change of heart and wanted to create a more personal story that was later fleshed out by Melissa Mathison. Thus E.T. was born and NIGHT SKIES was dead. Ron took a cameo in the film but wasn't impressed by Spielberg's sentimental product. That was until Ron's wife found a $7,500 "kill fee" in the original NIGHT SKIES contract should the project be terminated. Since NIGHT SKIES eventually became ET he was also due 1% net profits. The once struggling artist received a significant $400,000 check (plus residuals) after ET became the highest-grossing movie of 1982. #RestInPIctures #RIP #RonCobb https://www.instagram.com/p/CFcGjCLFcFI/?igshid=15nngksba648h

Ernie Orsatti (1940 - 2020) was a Beverly Hills native who started in the movie business at a young age and accumulated nearly 140 credits on tv and movies. Ernie would do motorcycle stunt work on THE STAR SPANGLED GIRL, had his neck broken by Charles Bronson in THE MECHANIC, and was known for his athletic prowess on films like THE TOWERING INFERNO, THE SWARM, THE CAR, BLIND FURY, FALLEN, ALIEN: RESURRECTION, and many more. 🚢 But Ernie's claim to fame would be the death-defying plunge into the dining hall of The S.S. Poseidon. In the 1972 disaster flick THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, Ernie was hired as an actor and had no professional training as a stunt man. Orsatti was tasked to make the 30-foot fall into the inverted skylight of the capsized ship. It's one of those stunts that you have to see in person. Actors that were not on call that day, like Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine, showed up with their families to watch the 26-year-old actor make the fall to his character's doom. Ernie would make the fall a success as well as many more like it because in Ernie's 40+ years on screen he was no longer known as an actor but as a stunt man. #RestInPictures #ErnieOrsatti #RIP https://www.instagram.com/p/CFPmQomlMZa/?igshid=kb9hquz6mavs

Before Marvel, Chadwick portrayed a number of black American icons from Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in GET ON UP, and Thurgood Marshall in MARSHALL. Wilford Brimley (1934 - 2020) entered the field at the assistance of his pal Robert Duvall. He first found his way on screen as an extra and stuntman in various Westerns, including the original TRUE GRIT and Burt Lancaster’s LAWMAN. Brimley’s big breakthrough was in the 1970s television series THE WALTON’S, playing mountain man Horace Brimley. 🎞 After his work in THE CHINA SYNDROME and THE THING, Brimley caught the attention of Ron Howard thanks to a small role in THE NATURAL, and soon found his way into the hearts of a generation of children as Grandpa Luckett in the oddball sci-fo adventure COCOON. However, you can’t talk Brimley without also championing his bit part in John Woo’s wild American debut, HARD TARGET. Many have walked away from explosions never looking back, but none have done it as powerfully as Wilford Brimley. #RestInPictures #WilfordBrimley #RIP https://www.instagram.com/p/CDZ2lm2Fo9E/?igshid=1lquytaankkvl
