Wayne Hussey, Gillian, and me.
In my teenage years I went to The Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow countless times to see The Mission with my pal, Gillian. The Mission has always been a band that makes a big powerful sound, full of melody, and Wayne Hussey in his dark glasses, black hat on a smoky stage has a clear dominating presence with which the crowd connect to and thrive upon. The Mission gigs in the 1980s were crazy, bouncy, full of love; and me and Gillian revelled in the chaos. Too young to drink, we stole a cider from the bar and threw ourselves amongst it, laughing as we got shoved around in our black clothes. The whole room stunk of patchouli. It was a blast.
Before Wayne Hussey came over for his tour last year (Nov 2019) Omnibus had provided me with a copy of his book, Salad Daze to review for the rock n roll book club. It is full of great stories about his time with The Sisters Of Mercy and such evocative tales of his childhood. After reading it, I wanted Wayne for a live interview for rock n roll book club, more than I ever wanted anybody. It’s great when I get to interview people that have meant something to me in music. It’s even better when their book is brilliant. I wanted Wayne, for his juicy stories, but mostly for Gillian and our past.
The publisher set it up for November and put us in touch on email. With a date pencilled, I wrote to Wayne and told him of my friendship with Gillian, and how the The Mission was one of the bands we enjoyed together. I told him of how we would sit in her bedroom playing God’s Own Medicine and get up and dance and shove each other about. I told him of the day that Gillian peeled back a small piece of the wallpaper and wrote on her bedroom wall, in biro, ‘I still believe in God, but God no longer believes in me’. We folded the wallpaper back over, so as not to get in trouble. Thirty-five years later, when the house was being cleared to sell, the little quote was still written there, on the wall under the paper.
Gillian and I were best pals for almost forty years. As teenagers we were never out each others houses drinking tea and eating chocolate biscuits and talking boyfriends and school. Once I accidentally broke her kitchen table and my dad came round to fix it. Their house was always full of young teen drop ins drinking out of a stainless steel pot of tea and hanging out with Gillian’s sisters Fiona and Monica, her dad Jim and her mum in a peeny, Gina. For a short time there was also a mad dog, Paddie, he enjoyed everybody’s legs. Gillian and I shared a love of music and were very close. We took trips together to Fort Augustus and slept on Michael and Ronald’s floors. We never thought twice about taking off somewhere with a backpack. I copied her French homework and she borrowed my tapes. When I moved to London she lived around the corner for a while. We were steeped in history and hilarious memories that carried us through a lifetime. When she lived in Manchester she’d send me silly funny notes in the post and I’d do the same. When she moved back to Edinburgh we would phone each other and sing The Mission and Lloyd Cole and The Smiths down the phone. She was cement for me and I for her. Although far apart saw each other whenever we could. We phoned each other a lot and just became kids again.
She was, in fact, best pals with so many people. Her little sisters, Fiona and Monica, and our other pals, Jacqueline, Elaine, Caroline, Babs, Sharron, Lorna, all of her school mum pals, all of her cousins, all of our school friends, the boys from the Academy. Anybody she touched in life instantly loved her. Even foreign exchange students and pen pals kept in touch. Like her mum, she had an abundance of love that beamed out from behind an apron. She was generous, loving, intelligent, loyal, hilariously funny and strikingly beautiful; and she was always, ALWAYS, making tea. She had a glow about her; an energy of positivity, youth, mischief and fun. Everybody had adventures with Gillian, and I was lucky to be one of them.
In Spring 2018 we received a text out of the blue saying that Gillian had been diagnosed with bowel cancer. When she was diagnosed my first thoughts were of how young she was, only in her forties, and how they would definitely operate. She had no symptoms. It was just there. As time moved on she discovered it was incurable and six months later she was gone. I got to spend some time with her in her last days in the Western General Hospital. I took in photos of us to look at and the old things we used to do. We laughed, even though she was in excruciating pain. I have never seen somebody in such pain, she couldn’t stay still despite every powerful drug available being dripped into her body. But still she laughed and smiled. ‘No greeting!’ she said, ‘You’ll get me going.’ I treasure those last few days, but forever feel useless and confused because there was nothing that could be done. I couldn’t save her. Nobody could. It is a powerless, rock hard and impossibly raw feeling to accept.
When Wayne Hussey sent a nice gentle reply to my email I just burst into tears. Because I wanted to phone Gillian. There’s a second when, although you know a person is dead, you get some news that relates to them, and you go to dial their number, and the crash of remembrance is overwhelming. The realisation that I couldn’t tell Gillian first was devastating. I wanted to hear her high excited voice. ‘Oh my God! What you gonnie wear?’ I wanted to smile through the sore tears. She deserved to be here; she deserved to meet him. In those minutes a parallel of our past life and my current life without her smashed together, and I felt lost, empty and just heavily sad. How come I’m here and she’s not?
But Wayne, well, what a gent. Gillian - you would have loved him.
I met with him quite a lot in a short space of time. First for dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Camden with the Omnibus team where I talked rubbish and asked him to sign my records. I had veggie fajitas and kept offering him a bit. He laughed, and was kind and charming. Honestly the nonsense that poured out of my mouth. I composed myself and then interviewed him at The Dublin Castle for rock n roll book club. We could have talked all night. Watch the link, he’s sensational.
The next morning he came into do my radio show Hamill Time on Boogaloo Radio. We had such a laugh. Wayne is easy to talk to, funny yet professional and quite mischievous. Perfect for Gillian.
I went to his gig in Nambucca that night, which was just brilliant. I felt Gillian beside me. Wayne Hussey’s connection with his crowd is very genuine. He gave me a shout out from the stage. His performance was incredible, authentic and moving. I’m pleased to say we’ve stayed friends.
Gillian, Thanks for sending me Wayne Hussey. I miss you every day. I’m off to listen to God’s Own Medicine now.
Wayne, thanks for reading my books, thanks for all the music and the kindness. You’re the best.
Thanks to David at Omnibus. With love to Fiona, Monica, Jim, Simon and the weans.
In September a fundraising ball was to be held in Gillian’s name to help raise money for Bowel Cancer, but regrettably it had to be postponed. Every day, 110 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer. It can be symptomless, and reach late stages without any signs. Please donate to help fund research. Do something amazing today. You can donate here.
If you can’t donate (times are hard) but you have some wonderful object that would be amazing to raffle at Gill’s ball in 2021, please get in touch. Thank you. X
RIP Gillian Farrell 10 June 1971 - 8 September 2018.
(You and Wayne would definitely have enjoyed a pot of tea and a Caramel Wafer).

Cheap Day Trip From Dublin: A Day in Howth
By: Alicia Nicholas
While the bustling city of Dublin is a fantastic travel destination, ranking high on lists of “Best Places to Visit” all over the world, there’s something to be said for venturing out of the city to experience the traditional charm and gorgeous landscapes that the country of Ireland is famous for. During my first month living in Dublin, it’s these day trips I’ve taken outside the city that have been the most memorable experiences; however, as a university student, I also understand the importance of sticking to a budget. This is a problem that many young travelers struggle with, which is why I want to share a how-to guide for the cheapest day trip I’ve taken so far, which also happens to be my favorite: a day in Howth--a charming seaside fishing village. In the following post, I’ll share affordable things to do and places to eat before finishing off with some tips on how to get from Dublin to Howth.
Things To Do
Hike the Cliffs: Howth us well-known for its hiking trails. There are 4 different hiking loops: the Lower Cliff Loop, the Tramline Loop, the Black Linn Loop, and the Bog of the Frogs Loop (in order from shortest to longest). All 4 loops conveniently depart from the Howth Station and will bring you to the top of cliffs with views of Lambay Island and Ireland’s Eye as well as to views of Baily Lighthouse (pictured above). All 4 loops are can be hiked without too much difficulty and are well-marked. Just be sure to bring good walking shoes, a rain jacket, water, and a snack. You’ll be stunned by this hiking near Dublin!
Walk the Piers: There are two piers surrounding Howth Harbour: the West Pier and the East Pier. The West Pier is lined with restaurants and shops, while the East pier leads to the Howth Harbour Lighthouse (pictured above). This is my favorite place in Howth to take a relaxing stroll. Keep an eye on the harbor--you may spot seals playing!
Take a Boat Ride to Ireland’s Eye: Experience an even more remote get-away on Ireland’s Eye--a small, uninhabited island just a 15-minute boat ride off the coast of Howth. Here you can explore the ruins of The Church of the Three Sons of Nessan, Martello Tower (pictured above), and the rock formation known as “The Stack,” which is home to many colonies of seabirds, including puffins. There are also small beaches around the island where you can relax and swim while watching the seals swim around the island.
Two companies offer boat rides to Ireland’s Eye: Ireland’s Eye Ferries & Island Ferries. A round-trip boat ride from either company costs €15. Ireland’s Eye Ferries also offers a boat ride around the island for only €10. Boats from both companies depart from Howth’s West Pier.
Explore Howth Castle & Gardens: Located just a 10-minute walk from Howth Station is Howth Castle (picture 1 above). The castle is unique in that it has been the private residence of the Gaisford-St Lawrence family for over 800 years. While tours of the home can be arranged in advance, the gates to the surrounding property are always kept open during the day. Visitors are free to view the castle from the outside and explore the castle gardens. The garden is unique in that it’s filled with exotic-looking plants that appear to be growing freely throughout the garden. It’s most famous for its beautiful rhododendrons (picture 2 above) that bloom each May and June. Within the property, there is also a path leading up to a cliff with great views of the water, Howth, and Dublin (picture 3 above).
Explore the Ruins of St. Mary’s Abby: St. Mary’s Abby is just a short walk up the hill in the center of town. Simply walk up Abbey Street and follow the stone steps to the right of Abbey Tavern. The ruins are beautiful to walk through and the position on the hill provides a nice view of the town and harbor below.
Visit the National Transportation Museum: See an interesting collection of historical vehicles including cars, trucks, trams, fire trucks, military vehicles, and so much more dating back to the years 1883-1984. Admission is only €3.
Where to Eat
Although Howth Harbour is lined with pricey seafood restaurants, there are also affordable meals available if you know where to look.
Howth Market: In addition to its permanent storefronts, the outdoor market comes alive with up to 25 market stalls selling a variety of food from all around the world; from Mexican burritos, traditional Hungarian, and Chinese noodles for the meal and cupcakes or churros for dessert. Whatever you’re craving, this marketing is sure to have something to satisfy it, and likely for less than €10. In addition to food vendors, there are plenty of stalls selling produce, baked goods, jewelry, and gifts that are fun to peruse.
The market is open from 09:00-18:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and bank holidays year-round. It’s located just across the street from the Howth DART station.
Beshoff Bros: Beshoff Bros is well-known for its fish and chips meals and provide several meal options for under €10 as well. For example, their fresh Atlantic Hake served with fresh potato chips, tartar sauce, a lemon wedge, and a drink is only €7,95.
How To Get There
Now that you’re no doubt inspired to visit Howth, here are the two most affordable options on how to get there.
DART Train: This is the cheapest way to get from Dublin to Howth. With a LEAP card, the DART costs on €2,40 each way. For shorter term visitors, an Adult Day Return ticket costs €6,25 and covers both your departure and return rides. Tickets can be purchased in advance on or on the day of travel at the station. The closest stations to the city center with service to Howth are Dublin Connolly, Dublin Pearse, and Tara Street. The station in the center of Howth is Howth Station--be sure to get off here and not the similarly named Howth Junction! The DART is also the quickest way to get from Dublin to Howth, taking approximately 26 minutes.
The DART running hours and departure/arrival times vary by the day. Useful resources for this information is the Irish Rail online Journey Planner and the Irish Rail official app.
Dublin Bus: The second cheapest way to get from Dublin to Howth is by taking either the 31 or 31a bus. With a LEAP card, the bus will cost €2,50 each way. Without a LEAP card, visitors may travel these routes for €3,30 each way. With this option, you must pay the driver upon boarding the bus. Make sure that you have exact change to pay the fare as bus drivers can’t get change for Euro notes. Keep in mind that the travel time for buses is much more variable and often longer than the DART due to traffic and more frequent stops.
And now you’re prepared for a day in Howth! You’re one step closer to doing Dublin on a Budget with this cheap day trip from Dublin. If you enjoyed this post, please share and comment below any additional questions you have about Howth, any topics you’d like to see covered in future posts, and any reviews you have once you’ve made your own trip to Howth. Until then, have a good trip!

Bird researchers have tracked a holidaymaker’s every move even to a pizza restaurant in London after they went home with a tracking device from an oystercatcher.
The GPS device had been set up to track the bird’s flight from Dublin to Orkey but fell off somewhere on the island on Sanday.
Researchers believe a holidaymaker then picked it up and took it home, via a campsite, a pizza restaurant and then a residential street in Ealing, west London.

A £100 reward is now being offered for return of the device, which is usually worth £1,000.
The trackers, which look like plastic bricks and are powered by a solar panel, are superglued to oystercatchers so researchers can study the birds and designed to fall off in the spring.
Professor Stu Bearhop, from the College of Life and Environment at the University of Exeter, told BBC Radio Orkney: ‘They’re really interested in how best to conserve those birds, and which habitats they need to put most effort into preserving.’
The research is being carried out by PhD student Steph Trapp, who says the tag fell off the bird on April 7.
It remained on a beach in Sanday until the end of May when it began moving again until reaching its destination in west London.

The tracker (pictured on a bird) remained on a beach in Sanday until the end of May when it began moving again until reaching its destination in west London
Ms Trapp said: ‘We think someone must have found the tag whilst on holiday in Sanday, and taken it down with them.’
She added that she would have done the same thing if she’d found something like the little tracker on a beach but has requested its return so it can be put on another bird.

Dublin Yums - Restaurant of the Month
Hi everyone,
It’s your Dublin Yums team here. We are back again with another post for all you foodies today. Today we are going to share with you our Restaurant of the Month.
The restaurant of the month is (drum roll please...)
The Station at Molloys.
The Station at Molloys has been a Dublin Yums favourite for a long time and we are going to tell you why.
Location:
Although The Station is a bit of a journey from the city centre, it is most definitely a journey that you won’t regret making. The journey from the city centre is simple with the number 27 bus from college green taking you almost at the Stations doorstep.
The Inside
One of my favourite things about The Station is their interior. Their interior gives off an old steam train vibe that is aesthetic and pleasing to the eye.
The Menu
The menu at The Station never disappoints and they are known for their amazing burgers and tasty chicken wings.
The menu has huge variety with the restaurant offering steaks, pasta dishes, burgers and salads. There is definitely something for everyone on their menu!
The Station is very busy during lunch hours and dinner hours as the variety of the menu is known to the locals. The restaurant is very popular with students from the TU Dublin Tallaght campus as they are just a five minute walk away from the restaurant. The lunch menu is student friendly, with students being able to purchase a huge feed for just under the price of €10. With prices like this it is hard to go anywhere else!
The Deals and Events
The Station offers plenty of bargains and events which is always great for the customer. The deals are as follows:
Monday & Tuesday: Cocktails are 2 for €12.
Wednesday: Live Music and Wings Wednesday. Wings Wednesday is extremely popular with customers, as they can purchase 1KG of chicken wings for €10.
Thursday: Quiz night and DJ.
Friday & Saturday: Live Music, DJ’s and Late Bar.
Sunday: Bingo Night
As you can see there is never a boring night in The Station and there is always something fun and entertaining to do.
Desserts
The Station at Molloys also has some delicious desserts on offer. Our favourite being the ‘DIY Cheesecake’. This is a baked vanilla cheesecake that you get to design and put all of your favourite topping on to.
Our Favourite Dishes
Now we are going to share with you our top three favourite dishes from the station.
(It was so hard to choose but these are the three we could decide on!)
1. Our top favourite dish from The Station has to be their infamous chicken wings. The crunchy coating on the outside and spicy sauce is a combination you can’t miss!
2. Our second favourite dish would have to be the carbonara. The creamy pasta with smoky bacon and parmesan cheese. This indulgent dish had to make it to our top three!
3. Our third favourite dish has to be the pork ribs. The ribs are drenched in barbecue sauce and the meat falls off the bone. It is served with crunchy onion rings and is a sinful but delicious dish.
Now that we have your mouth watering. Why don’t you go and try The Station at Molloys and comment on this post and tell us what you think?
Happy Yumming,
The Dublin Yums Team :)

Spanish Snacks Dublin
Are you a student recently returned from Erasmus in Spain or planning on traveling to Spain in the future?
Are you missing the taste of the local cuisine or fancy testing out some Paella or Tapas?
If so, this is the blog for you!!
I recently returned from Erasmus in Spain and found it extremely difficult to find restaurants that recreate the atmosphere and taste of a local restaurants in Madrid or Barcelona at an affordable price.
For those of you unfamiliar with the local Spanish cuisine here is an introduction to traditional dishes found in the area.
Tapas
A Tapa is an appetizer or snack in Spanish cuisine and translates to small portion of any kind of Spanish cuisine. Tapa may be cold or hot. In some bars and restaurants in Spain and across the globe, tapas have evolved into a more sophisticated cuisine. In Spain, tapas can include practically anything―from a chunk of tuna, a cocktail onion, and an olive skewered on a long toothpick, to piping hot chorizo sausage served in a small clay dish, to a gourmet slow-cooked beef cheek served over a sweet potato puree.
Paella
Paella is a Valencian rice dish that has ancient roots but its modern form originated in the mid-19th century in the area around Albufera lagoon on the east coast of Spain adjacent to the city of Valencia. A dish of paella consists of rice, meat (chicken, chorizo or beef), vegetables and seafood. The original purpose of cooking paella was to clear out the leftovers from a family’s fridge.
Fear not for I have discovered restaurants that will cater to all your necesidades de comida española.
1. The Paella Guys
Not necessarily a restaurant, but a gem of an establishment to eat fresh, traditional and affordable Paella in Dublin. The Paella Guys are an award-winning street food company. You can find them set up throughout Dublin at the Irish Village Markets in Sandyford, EastPoint, the Waterways Ireland Visitor Centre, Percy Place, Spencer Dock and at Mespil Road. I would highly recommend their Chicken & Chorizo Paella and Moorish Meatballs, it is a personal favorite of mine.
2. Las Tapas de Lola
World Tapas Day is on 16th June 2019 and why not take a trip to the mecca of tapas in Dublin. Hailed by hundreds of online reviews as the best tapas in Dublin, it’s very hard to argue with this when it comes to Las Tapas de Lola. The recipes hail from Barcelona where the owner is from. Lads Tapas de Lola combines fantastic Spanish cuisine accompanied with a vibrant Spanish atmosphere. Guaranteed clean plates at a very affordable price. Situated on Wexford Street Las Tapas de Lola is very accessible for students traveling into the city centre.
3. Havana
Easily the most reasonably priced Spanish restaurant in Dublin. Along with the amazing food the Havana offers excellent student deals as well as a 20%-off early-bird and paella Mondays, Lamb Tuesdays and Mojito Wednesdays. Located on George Street Havana is in a central location and easily accessible from anywhere in Dublin. Make sure to make a trip and enjoy some to-class Spanish cuisine.
Fancy creating the traditional plate of Paella from the comfort of your own kitchen?
Here is an easy to follow Spanish Paella Recipe which I love to use to create a dish full of life and flavour to impress all my buddies!!!
What do we need?
1 Paella Dish
1 Tablespoon Olive oil
1 Chopped Onion
300g Paella Rice
400g Chopped Tomatoes (1 Can)
900ml Chicken
400g Frozen Seafood Mix
All of these ingredients can be purchased in your local Aldi for under €10.
The dish serves 4 people.
It’s a 10/10 from me
Que te divieratas!!!!

Paris, Darling.
It all started with an episode of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (season 2). I was in bed, a cold dreary night in December while Sam was at work. Likely, I was snacking on a sleeve of cookies. Hey, I’m setting the scene for you! Midge Maisel steps out of a taxi onto a Parisian street. Her father, Abe, banters with the cab driver about the price of the fare. Her mother arrives later in the scene, beret wearing and bagette bearing. She is light, she is at ease and she is flawlessly the romantic French woman. I started googling flights absently. I found a great deal...and the rest is history. We were booked to Paris in a month. Sam, being very accustomed to this being my method of travel planning, embraced the spirit of the evening.
We left Dublin on Saturday January 12th. Arriving in Paris that evening, it was evident that it was Sam’s first trip outside of the U.S. beyond the move to Dublin purely based on the smile you couldn’t for love or money wipe off his face.
After a chaotic moment in a train station, we found our hotel (thanks Mom!) and dropped our suitcase -- we’d both opted to bring warm, functional clothes, thankfully! -- and headed out into the night. I’d prebooked us a Siene cruise the day before (10 euro online, 14 at the door!) so after a visit to Notre Dame...
and the purchase of a beret, a sampling of Orangina and crepe we were on the water!
It’s something close to magic to witness someone seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time. It’s pure magic to witness Sam see it.
I have once bought the novelty photo from a tourist trap; it was in Minnesota in the summer of 2017. Jack and I had taken the view of America virtual reality tour. I was flying high and wanted to commemorate that moment. When we stepped off the chilly barge that evening in Paris, onto the chilly embankment I surprised Sam by purchasing my second ever novelty photo. It was refreshing to have a photo of us that wasn’t a selfie...and tell me you would pass up a photo of someone *this* happy.
After our boat tour, the reality that it had been a long day hit like a sack of bricks and this influenced a dinner choice like it never would again. I’ll just say, twelve euro for two cokes did not go down well. But it taught us to shop around when looking for dining options. Also, thankfully no where else proffered the ketchup before we’d even ordered anything so that was a once off too.
The next morning, Sunday January 13th we woke early and headed to City Hall to collect Sam’s museum pass.
Which promptly reminded me I’d forgotten my Irish passport at the hotel. So back we went, and then onwards to the Jewish History and Culture Museum.
After the Jewish Museum, hungry again we found our way back to Notre Dame and from there to the gaggle of restaurants I’d frequented when in Paris solo in August 2017. After selecting a three course lunch for 10 euro each, Sam delightedly sponsored wine with our meal and declared he wanted wine with every meal from thereon. No more twelve euro Coke’s for us, Garcon. Only your finest five euro red, please.
Sam’s first attempt at French Onion Soup concluded, two hours later we made our way to the Muse D’Orsay. Arguably, my favorite museum for its scale and its collection of Art Nouveau furniture, which I took Sam around and insisted if we ever won the lottery, we’d split it between first edition comics and outfitting our no doubt chic European apartment in Art Nouveau furniture.
And perhaps unexpectedly but very pleasantly I’d arranged to meet a fellow traveler, Chuck, and his colleague Michelle for coffee. Very kindly they treated us to coffee and hot chocolates in the cafe of the D’Orsay behind one of the massive front facing clocks.
One of Sam’s bucket list things to eat, was a macaroon. Tick that off! After the Muse D’Orsay we wandered and hit up a Laduree, where our single vanilla and salted caramel macaroons seemed very slight behind the order ahead of us of almost twenty macaroons in a pink and lavender box, complete with tissue paper. It didn’t dampen our spirits; Sam, on his first bite, remarked “It’s like ice cream, in a cookie!”.
Our wander avec macaroons ended in another of Sam’s bucket list food items: fondue. We’d returned to our neighborhood from lunch and tempted by the offer of free wine for “being first tonight!” and the ability to split one fondue for two (most places were exclusively one-for-one which when budgeting, can be killer).
The second glasses of red we ordered after we’d finished our “free cocktail” added to the evening’s ambiance. So did when a dozen American college students came in with their chaperones on an organized trip, and our friend the jovial French restauranteur who had co-erced to fondue and free wine gleefully bought a bag of frozen snails from his neighbor on the street. Escargot!
Monday January 14th started at the Mecca for Art Students: The Louvre.
Following our three hour jaunt around the biggest museum in the world -- during which Sam must have taken 10,000 photos -- we treated ourselves to French McDonalds. Tres fancy!
Then it was time for the real treat -- Angelina! Sam had been trying hot chocolate’s around the place but I’d kept Angelina a secret until we walked in and no word of a lie, he said upon entering the dainty, porcelain serving and chandelier lit cafe “Oh, good thing I wore my khakis today!”.
You could have rolled us out of the place in the end, but it was worth every drop. To burn off the solid ten pounds of chocolate in our guts, we walked to the Musee De L'Orangerie and discussed impressionism like the pretentious Liberal Arts graduates we are before heading to the Arc de Triumph.
And then, because our legs didn’t hate us enough yet, we walked to the Eiffel Tower as well. I was shocked to see the now necessary bullet proof glass surrounding the base of the monument.
Oh, and Sam almost got scammed in the “bracelet scam” that I first heard of in 2010 when I visited Paris with People to People. Honestly, I’d stopped believing it was real until a man in the park around the Tower emerged from the shrub, tried to tie a friendship bracelet on poor confused Sam and I grabbed his coat, yanking him away.
With our legs finally giving out, we hopped a Metro and blessedly made it back to Notre Dame in a few minutes. Exhausted, it was still too early for dinner so we did the next best option...found an Irish pub, in Paris. We’re marketing students; brand consistency is 101.
A pint (or two) later we shuffled back out onto the street, and once again were fooled by a fast talking Frenchman who despite Sam’s insistence for “Muscles?!” for me, seated us in a restaurant which absolutely did not serve muscles. But they did give us free wine again, however, this time I let Sam enjoy my share as the pints had done their job nicely. It was in this restaurant that Sam first tried raclette. After the other worldly experience he mumbled something to be about never being able to eat cheese again, but having enjoyed his last dance with it in Paris.
Tuesday January 15th was our last day in Paris. I am putting in writing now that Sam has since requested next time I give him the option to pick a 9pm flight that I do not do so. We had ever intention of heading to Sacre Coeur, even made it to the Metro station platform. Then two trains crammed full of people passed us and after a quick five minute “wait...you’re too tired to enjoy that too?!” conference we instead decided to go to some comic book shops, do some last minute shopping and maybe sneak in a crepe or two.
By Tuesday at midnight we were safely back in bed in Dublin, exhausted but content.
Cheers, Mrs. Maisel!

HLM News, chronological:
24 Aug 2020 HLM named one of six in competition to find homes of the future
24th of August 2020 – HLM Architects is delighted to announce that out of more than 200 entries it has been shortlisted to one of six for the second phase of the hotly contested RIBA Home of 2030 Design competition.
Announced yesterday (23 August 2020) by Housing Minister Christopher Pincher, the Home of 2030 competition has encouraged the best and brightest talents of the housing industry to design environmentally friendly homes that support people in leading independent, fulfilling lives as our society ages.
The competition aims to attract the best and brightest talents of the housing industry to design the homes of the future. In the first phase of the competition, small businesses, designers and manufacturers were invited to come forward with ideas for new low carbon, age-friendly homes, meeting the highest standards of design whilst tackling the key challenges facing our society.
In developing its submission for the first phase of this competition, HLM Architects created the concept of a universal manufacturing platform that enables flexible, affordable, and sustainable ‘forever’ homes that are able to perpetuate a circular economy. These homes will be able to grow and shrink with their owners needs to create stable communities and a strong sense of place.
This concept was developed with support from the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with the ambition to solve the issue of capacity and compatibility of offsite housing construction through development of a design standard that enables any offsite manufactured system to deliver the same high quality, sustainable design, with parts that are interchangeable.
In the second phase of the competition HLM Architects and AMRC will be joined by Mid Group, a contractor that will help develop a platform that provides interchangeability with a varied ecosystem of components and suppliers. Completing the team are Hydrock, who will bring engineering excellence and Greenbuild, HLM Architect’s sustainability consultant partners.
HLM Director and Head of Design, Philip Watson said, ‘Our ambition is to use the power of design and technology to create homes that are flexible, sustainable and affordable. These will be homes that adapt to people’s needs over their lifetime so that they can put down strong roots, thus nurturing supportive communities. At a macro level we are also seeking to create a design platform that enables the entire construction and manufacturing industry to unite to solve our housing crisis.’
The team will now go on to develop their design concepts and present to the Evaluation Panel. Winners will then be introduced to Homes England development framework partners to explore the possibility of developing bids for a series of homes on Homes England land.
Background Information: The Home of 2030 competition is a cross Government initiative that brings together MHCLG (the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government, responsible for housing supply, standards, planning and building safety), BEIS (Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, responsible for innovation and business strategy) and DHSC (Department of Health and Social Care, responsible for health, wellbeing and issues arising from an ageing population). Each of the departments is seeking a benefit: increased housing supply through greater diversity in the market, improved quality and standards in homes through innovation and technology, and social, environmental and economic benefits arising from better health outcomes. Homes England, the Government’s housing accelerator, are engaged in the initiative and are now leading a subsequent development phase subject to successful development bids by Homes England Delivery Panel and Winner consortia.

Lorraine Robertson, who heads up HLM Scotland said: “We are very proud to be recognised for our people development efforts, especially in such a competitive category at the Glasgow Business Awards. People development is at the heart of everything we do and we strive to give our team the best opportunity to continue to grow and develop their careers. “I would like to thank the whole Glasgow team as this wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work they put in everyday and the positive contribution they make to our learning and development culture.” The awards, organised by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, recognise forward-thinking and innovative Glasgow-based organisations.
The People Development category aims to award businesses which successfully promote and implement a learning environment, which in turn ensures organisational and individual success. Christian Jenkins, Director of Operations at Plymouth Science Park, said: “Plymouth Science Park is delighted to be shortlisted in two categories for these prestigious awards.
“We were absolutely clear from the outset on what the look and feel of 1 Research Way should be and we are more than satisfied with the results. HLM Architects BIM News
HLM associate joins panel of industry experts at BIM conference in Edinburgh
With the Scottish Government aiming to adopt a BIM Level 2 approach across public sector projects by April 2017, Paul Tunstall, associate at architectural practice HLM joins a panel of industry experts, architects and technology leaders at the BIM in Scotland conference in Edinburgh this month to illustrate how BIM theory can give competitive advantages to companies in Scotland.
Tunstall will discuss HLM’s broad experience of BIM and expertise in using it through the project lifecycle, starting from the initial decision on which platform to use through to challenges encountered in a large multinational implementation. As part of his presentation, Tunstall will also explore how he envisages the HLM practice and the wider architectural industry developing.
Providing architectural, landscape architecture, interior design and environmental design services, in recent years HLM has expanded operations to six offices in the UK and two others internationally.
HLM has a one-team culture which creates a platform for all its UK and overseas offices to share both workload and resources. This poses a challenging environment for its BIM activities to ensure consistency in quality and timely delivery.
“HLM was one of the first architectural practices in the UK to achieve certification through the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) Business Certification Scheme, firmly establishing it as a leading BIM Level 2 compliant organisation,” said Tunstall.
“My presentation will explore the concept of ‘Wide Area BIM’ and demonstrate some of the systems and tools that help make it possible.”
Tunstall has been an employee of HLM for over 18 years, implementing CAD and BIM systems across the group and providing training and support for its team of over 200 employees. He leads a team of Information Managers having the technical skills to support HLM’s many software tools and systems, under a group-wide Technology Team.
The UK Government implemented a mandate for BIM on all of its public-sector projects in April of this year and Tunstall was instrumental in ensuring that HLM had the preparation and knowledge to undertake any project required to deliver BIM Level 2, well in advance of the deadline by guiding the practice through the BRE Business Certification Scheme.
As a member of the BuildingSMART organisation in the UK, he represents HLM in workshops and discussions to maintain HLM’s alignment with BIM and associated initiatives, both in the UK and internationally.
The BIM in Scotland conference is free to attend and takes place in Edinburgh on Wednesday 21 September 2016.
