LGBTQ Muslims are often met with hostility from Muslims, Christians, and LGBTQ people alike. I've experienced harassment from my fellow Muslims online by sending hate messages and threatening me with death. While there are many progressive Christians, some constantly question my faith and sexuality because I don't fit their perception of how Muslims should look and behave. Queer Muslim narratives are also often unaddressed because of Islamophobia in LGBT spheres. There is difficulty fitting in the LGBT movement because Islam as religion is often perceived as brutal towards homosexuals. I hate Islamophobia as much as I hate homophobia and living a life being the subject of these fears often comes with a great and constant threat of violence. But I always believe that having a strong faith while also being true to oneself are not mutually exclusive and I hope others can respect that and let the afterlife do the judgment. #RespetoNaman is a campaign that aims to eliminate Gender-Based Violence (GBV), especially in the Philippines. With the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) right around the corner, we aim to highlight GBV against the LGBTQ+ community through the campaign’s spin-off, #EndRainbowViolence serves as an opportunity to feature stories of acceptance but also highlights the harassment and attacks members of the LGBTQ+ community experience from various sectors. Conceptualized by SPARK Philippines in partnership with the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines, and Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Manila; in cooperation with Terre des hommes, Mindanao Pride, and Kumu.

on feminist social movements
Tumblr media
artwork: women by woman medium: traditional collage + digital glitter lettering art and words: e1 section: a51
Social movements are loosely organized effort by a large group to attain a political goal—that is true. In recent years, we’ve been able to witness different social movements. We have the Black Lives Matter movement, HeForShe movement, #MeToo movement, and such. With these examples presented, one can note that these movements are geared towards the attainment of justice and equality among all. In my second critical commentary, I explained the Hukbalahap Rebellion and how they were fighting to achieve a social change. These peasants have experienced constant injustices and were fighting back. In this blog, I will be talking about what is interesting to me, more recent movements that I personally support—the #MeToo movement and the Free the Nipple Movement.
Looking over at the movements that I presented, one would notice that these movements are products of feminism—something that I strongly believe in. The feminism that we have now incorporates intersectionality—an ideology which understands that women who belong in the different parts of society may experience more discrimination. For example, a straight, white woman experiences more privileges in life than an African-American trans-woman. There are different facets of discrimination. It is not one-dimensional and intersectionality explains that.
The #MeToo movement is a social movement in which victims of sexual harassment publicize their experiences. This movement encourages victims of sexual abuse to speak up as it offers an arena in which people could express their struggles. It is a movement powered by courage and understanding. The movement rose to popularity when Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women. The movement further rose to prominence when Kevin Spacey was accused of the same thing by multiple men.
The movement seemed to be effective because powerful men like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey are being called out for their actions. In addition to this, states in America have adapted policies that concern sexual abuse. The movement has also inspired people from the Philippines to speak out against their abusers. Women are having more courage to move forward and to be in solidarity with others. To be quite honest, I think that the Philippines, too need a #MeToo movement. The office of the vice president, along with other organisations, launched #RespetoNaman, a movement that aims to empower survivors.
In the Philippines, sexual harassment cases and rape unreported go prolific. The huge number which goes unreported are concerning, hence the need for it. Up until now, there is still a stigma around the survivors of sexual harassment and rape. Survivors are usually blamed for their demise while their attackers go scot-free. Usually, women are blamed based on the way they dress, if they were alone, and other centuries-old tactics for victim blaming. Men are usually told that they should’ve fought back too. The #MeToo movement and its local counterpart, #RespetoNaman are necessary to empower and encourage people to speak out. By doing so, the society becomes more accepting and empathetic towards their struggles. The movement is close to my heart being a survivor myself and if there is anything that I could offer or say, it’s never our fault. Sexual offenders are to be blamed for their actions. I am lucky enough to have a family that supports and believes in me whenever I talk about my encounter but at the same time, I am reminded of my privilege. Others can’t even tell their own loved ones of their encounter because of the deep-rooted shame instilled to them. It is so important to have a platform or to have a support system. This movement is all about that—empowerment, courage, and camaraderie.
Another social movement that I support is the #FreeTheNipple movement. If one looks it up online, they will be met by the support of celebrities claiming that they have never really cared if their boobs were out in public. However, that information is misleading. When I first heard about the movement, it sort of made sense because men are allowed to go topless so why can’t we do that too? On the surface, it seems as though it is all about that but the more I read into it the more I realized that it was never about the female breast. It’s about the sexualization that comes with it.
For centuries, women’s bodies were always sexualized. There are little to no art that does not sexualize the female body. In literature and in film, the male gaze is always present. Pornography has set unnatural standards for the female body too. Women’s bodies are never showed in their true and natural form. It has always been perceived as sexual objects for men’s pleasure. Mainstream media has been no help. It has always objectified the female anatomy. Women are more than just bodies for men’s gratification. Women must be allowed to do whatever they please to their bodies. If boys are allowed to go to school in tank tops then girls should too. Women should take charge of their bodies without any external voices telling them no. The movement supports that. There is so
These movements all started small. People have their own variation of these movements, but they are all geared toward one goal—gender equality. Movements like these have helped me educate myself on issues and inequalities faced not only by women but by other people as well. Slowly, I have seen social movements influence change on the society and it is inspiring.

Drive vs. sexual harassment, rape to roll out in Naga
#PHnews: Drive vs. sexual harassment, rape to roll out in Naga
MANILA-- The Respeto Naman campaign which advocates against sexual harassment is marking its first-year anniversary this month and will soon roll out in Naga City, the Swedish Embassy in Manila announced Friday.
"The nationwide campaign #RespetoNaman is marking its first year of raising awareness and working towards the end of gender-based violence (GBV) in the Philippines. For this milestone, #RespetoNaman will be bringing the conversation to Naga City, through the #DontTellThemHowToDress exhibit," the embassy said Friday.
Respeto Naman campaign is a collaboration among the Embassy of Sweden in the Philippines, SPARK! Philippines, the Office of Vice President Leni Robredo, the United Nations, Empower, Terre des Hommes through Girls Advocacy Alliance, and Para sa Sining.
It focuses on the issues of rape and sexual harassment and has been launched in different parts of the country, including Metro Manila, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Dumaguete.
One component of the movement is the "Don't Tell Them How To Dress" exhibit which features the stories of GBV victims, as well as educational forums.
“With this campaign, we aim to give advocates of gender equality and victims the support and encouragement they need to speak up against sexual harassment and gender-based violence," Swedish Ambassador Harald Fries said in a statement.
"We also want to strengthen prevention mechanisms through education and discourse on misogynistic attitudes that lead to violence against women,” he added.
The envoy noted that the campaign has been “instrumental” in the embassy’s advocacy of eliminating GBV.
In its second year, SPARK! executive director Maica Teves, meanwhile, said the movement will focus on an action-based approach.
"For the coming year we’re gearing towards a more action-oriented approach, focusing on working with communities to create sustainable, and lasting solutions to end violence in the Philippines," she said. (PNA)

It feels like it was just yesterday when i received enormous hate and death threats for coming out & being proud queer Muslim at Mindanao PrideFestival. It is now more than ever that we join together to #EndRainbowViolence in the Philippines. Our brothers and sisters in Mindanao are being discriminated and oppressed by the conservative society that keeps on pushing queers out of the conversation. #RespetoNaman.

Exhibit highlighting gender issues opens in Dgte
#PHinfo: Exhibit highlighting gender issues opens in Dgte
DUMAGUETE CITY, Sept. 17 (PIA) -- The #RespetoNaman campaign was recently launched in Dumaguete City as the second stop in its Visayas leg to raise awareness on gender-based violence around the country.
Gender advocates Atty. Pristine Raymond, Maria Isabel Quimson, Ambassador Harold Fries of Sweden, Mikaela Luisa Teves and Kassandra Barnes joined Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo in the opening of the “Don’t Tell Me How to Dress” Exhibit at a local mall not only to raise awareness on gender-based violence, but to change the norms.
The drive is pushing for change in policy, better practices, and the rehabilitation of victims.
#RespetoNaman hopes to spread awareness and encourage discourse outside of Metro Manila.
Remollo reiterated the support of the city government in the campaign to minimize gender-based violence not only in Dumaguete City but nationwide.
Inspired by the global #MeToo and #TimesUp Movements, #RespetoNaman is a project of the Office of Vice President Leni Robredo, the Embassy of Sweden in Manila, UN Women, SPARK! Philippines, Empower, Terre des Hommes through the Girls Advocacy Alliance, and Para sa Sining.
Robredo, who spent years giving legal assistance to abused women and children, supports initiatives like this, believing that Filipino women should be given every opportunity to thrive in a safe environment.
“Women’s empowerment in the 21st century is no longer just about representation and activism. Each one of us is called to go beyond lip service, and be more proactive in championing the cause of making our spaces not only safe for women, but conducive to their success," said Robredo.
Fries, who has supported the campaign since it started last year, reiterated the staunch support of Sweden for the campaign.
He noted that “the message of #RespetoNaman needs to reverberate not just in Metro Manila, but also to the farthest towns in the Philippines as it tackles important, but often overlooked questions such as: Are there sufficient laws protecting the welfare of women and girls? Are these laws effectively enforced to protect women and girls from exploitation, violence, harassment and rape? Are social norms enabling a culture of abuse of women?”
On the other hand, Maica Teves, Executive Director of SPARK!, said: “SPARK! wants women to know that they are not alone. Together, we will fight for our rights and for respect. Now, more than ever, is the time to shift the narrative, end victim-blaming, and call for respect for women not because of what they wear or how they act, but by virtue of their being human.”
#RespetoNaman will be in Dumaguete City until the end of September 2019. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental with reports from CPIO Dems Demecillo)
