THE BEACH TRIANGLE
Everyone loves beaches and heading towards the water bodies. Be it summer, winter or rainy, the beaches everywhere in the world are always crowded and well equipped to handle large numbers.
As for me, the endless horizon widens my perspective making me aware of the infinite solutions to a situation at hand. The vast seashore makes my heart dance in glee.
Having travelled to many cities gave me access to visit varied coasts and lakes. The Daman and Diu beaches in Gujarat, Fort Kochi beach at Vasco da Gama square in Kerala’s Kochi, Ukkadam lake in Coimbatore, Ooty lake, Fateh sagar lake in Rajasthan’s Udaipur and the Panchmarhi lake, The lakes in Bhopal, Bee falls in Madhya Pradesh are great places to visit. Fortunate to have this experience in my kitty and eager for more.
THE KONKAN COAST
The coast of Maharashtra also known as the konkan coast includes Maharashtra, Goa and some parts of Karnataka. This coast is a gem in the vast treasure chest of India. Several years ago, we had visited the Kashid beach but we couldn’t explore the beach triangle of Shrivardhan, Diveagar and Harihareshwar in the Raigad district of Maharashtra.
STAY IN SHRIVARDHAN
So… it was time to pack the bags and hit the coast in Raigad. A weekend trip means everything has to be hurried up. From a 3:30 am wake up to a 4:45 am exit from home, the rush to reach Shrivardhan was there so that we could have an entire day to explore the places nearby. Soon, my driver Nilesh had the car heading towards the city exit to reach Shrivardhan well in time.
With a pretty stay in a 3-star resort, we checked in early. The entire day was planned such that the beach triangle in this area could be covered well. However, the time slot of 1 pm to 4 pm wouldn’t be utilised due to the high temperatures outside. But we decided to go for lunch at that hour.
LUNCH TIMES IN SHRIVARDHAN
Shrivardhan is home to many homestays. With a pre booking, one can avail lunch at these homestays and relish the coastal treats that it offers. We decided to head to Tavsalkar’s for lunch. Tavsalkar’s is one of the renowned home stays with great options for meal. A veg and non-veg meal later, we realised the simple meal that we had just had was tastier than any in a 5 star in Mumbai. The farm fresh ingredients added taste and health and the simple taste was a memory to be cherished. A tour of their small homestay left us happy and we decide to return to the resort.
HEADING TO DIVEAGAR
As the sun began to shed its heat and warmth, we headed out to Diveagar. The sea route from Shrivardhan to Diveagar is the most scenic route we have ever driven on. A stretch of 20 kms running parallel to divine waters and plantations is a sight to behold. Just looking at the shining waters was akin to finding Gods. The sight was mesmerizing and we couldn’t take off our eyes from the coastline.
DIVEAGAR
Diveagar is a small village nestled between Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar. Its famous for the beach and coconut and betel nut plantations. There are “wadis”(plantations) owned by locals where one can catch up with some rest before exploring the place.
ON reaching Diveagar, we visited the Suvarna Ganesh Mandir where one can find a golden idol of Lord Ganesha. From here we went to the Diveagar beach.
Now the beach here was full of people and water sports activity could be undertaken. We took a stroll along the shores and captured great moments to relish later. The liveliness on the beach was rubbed onto each other and everyone on the beach was having great fun.
With our feets full of Diveagar sands, we were heading back to Shrivardhan. The Shrivardhan beach was just 1 km of our stay and we decided to go there in the morning.
HARIHARESHWAR
DAY 2 and we were required to check out today and the Harihareshwar trip needed to be done today itself. So the clock hit 6 and we were already out for Harihareshwar. We visited the kaalbhairav temple and the Harihareshwar Beach. Though one could do with a full day at Harihareshwar, we did not have a day to spare since we were required to check out on time due to a felicitation ceremony at Kharghar and roadblocks were expected to be in place.
So we stepped back to Shrivardhan and headed to the last place on our itinerary Shrivardhan beach. We had been told that Dolphins are sighted at the Shrivardhan beach and we could spot them if lucky. Unfortunately we couldn’t as the sun was up by now and the warm waters at the top wouldn’t be suitable to their sighting. It was disappointing, nevertheless this pending circuit was completed and the memory reel is still fresh with beautiful moments from here.

Cyclone Nisarga to hit coasts of Gujarat, Maharashtra today - india news
https://liveindiatimes.com/cyclone-nisarga-to-hit-coasts-of-gujarat-maharashtra-today-india-news/
A deep depression over east-central Arabian Sea, which intensified into cyclone Nisarga on Tuesday noon is expected to make landfall as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100 to 110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph near Alibag in Raigad district on June 3, the India Metereological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday. Located 94 km from Mumbai, Alibag is a popular seaside resort town for Mumbai’s elite and home to a large fisherfolk community.
It started as a warning on Sunday for mid-week heavy rains in Mumbai and by Monday, rapidly developed into a red alert for several coastal districts as the deep depression progressed over the Arabian Sea. As of Tuesday noon, cyclone Nisarga was 280 km west-southwest of Goa, 490 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 710 km south-southwest of Surat . The IMD said that the cyclone was likely to cross north Maharashtra and adjoining south Gujarat coast between Daman and Harihareshwar in Raigad on Wednesday afternoon.
The western coastline from Konkan’s Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri to Saurashtra’s Bhavnagar and other districts of Gujarat including Surat and Baruch have received wind warnings ranging from 55-65 kmph (gusting to 75kmph) and increasing to gusting speeds of 115-120kmph in four Maharashtra districts of Palghar, Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. Though a wide expanse of districts stands to be affected across coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat, higher wind speeds in the four districts mentioned above offer an indication of where the cyclone is likely to have maximum impact.
“The landfall location will be very close to Alibag but extensive damage can be expected in Mumbai also. For Mumbai, Thane and Raigad there can be storm surge of 1-2 metres and a warning for extremely heavy rainfall has been issued,” M Mohapatra, director general IMD, said.
Additional storm surge warnings — shoreward movement of water above astronomical tide height under the action of wind stress — have also been issued for Raigad, Thane, Greater Mumbai and Ratnagiri. Storm surges indicate the extent of inundation to expect. A storm surge of 0.5m to 1.3m over coastal Alibag may result in flooding up to 1.4km of low-lying area.
The city of Mumbai and its suburban satellite of Thane, already beleaguered by daily caseload of Covid-19 infections — the capital city breached the 40,000 mark at the start of the week — are in the cyclonic path, leading to concern over whether the city healthcare infrastructure would be able to cope. The IMD sounded a red alert as extremely heavy rains (over 20 cm) are expected in parts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Sindhudurg, and Palghar among other districts.
Roxy Mathew Koll, senior scientist, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, said that if landfall happened over Raigad, maximum rainfall should be expected over areas to its north, where Mumbai falls. “Not just the direct impact of winds but forecast indicates heavy rain up to 200mm while the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has forecast storm surges with waves of 3-6 metres as the cyclone approaches landfall. If this happens during high tide on June 3 then flooding will be a major concern for a city that is already clogged.”
“The last severe cyclonic storm to hit close to Mumbai was in 1961. This storm is severe but with a wind speed of only 100 to 110 kmph. The important thing is to take all precautions possible, which state governments are trying. Inundation is possible so evacuation of vulnerable people is important,” said Mohapatra.
But experts warned that devastation can be extensive as today’s Mumbai is very different from the Bombay of 1960’s which has lost most of its floodplains and rivulets and is now counted as among the densest cities in the world. “Where are Mumbai’s floodplains now? Mithi river used to flow then, now it’s a nallah [drain]. Natural defenses like mangroves and rivers have been squeezed out of the city for expanding roads, buildings, and the airport. Hence, when heavy rains lash over a city like Mumbai which has lost its flood plains and defences, the flooding gets prolonged there too,”said Koll.
IMD officials said pre-monsoon cyclones like Nisarga were not a rare event, citing the example of very severe cyclone Vayu in June 2019, which was supposed to have made landfall over the Gujarat coastline, but ended up as a low pressure system. “We are observing the increase in pre-monsoon cyclones in Arabian Sea. While we should not draw a trend until observing such weather systems for at least a few years. However, we are assessing whether these systems are intensifying faster than before [which could be] due to numerous factors including rising ocean temperatures,” said Sunitha Devi, in-charge of cyclones at IMD.
“Some of the weakest cyclones at sea are being strengthened due to global warming and climate change impacts. This is no more a theory, and is being witnessed every monsoon in Arabian Sea now,” Anjal Prakash, author of an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, said.
The name, Nisarga proposed by Bangladesh, means ‘nature’. It is the 65th named cyclone in the north Indian Ocean and the second pre-monsoon cyclone to hit the Konkan coast since 1891. It comes in the wake of cyclone Amphan that devastated the lives of over a million people and left 86 dead when it made landfall as a very severe cyclonic storm on May 21 at the Sunderbans, in West Bengal.
Skymet, a private weather forecaster differed from the IMD’s prediction of the cyclonic path. “Our weather models are showing the landfall north of Mumbai with crucial period of extremely heavy rain and gale winds expected from Tuesday evening to Wednesday afternoon,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice president (meteorology and climate change).

Many of my friends from Pune and Mumbai always prefer to plan their weekend trip in Konkan. The beautiful beaches, lush green hills, curvy roads, smiley people and a variety of fishes in lunch and dinner… What else you need to spend a perfect weekend gateway? I was always fascinated with this equation, but kept it postponed every time as it is my native place. But this time I determined to plan a trip in Konkan. Anyhow and finally, the day had arrived. I planned a weekend trip of 2 days with bucket list points to see, and places where I can eat fresh fish. Starting from Shrivardhan which is followed by Diveaagar and then Harihareshwar.
How to go?
Easiest and best way to reach Shrivardhan is by road. Shrivardhan is 189 km from Mumbai and it is 157 km Via Tahmini ghat and 212 km via Khopoli-pen road from Pune.
I had started my journey from Pune. Both the roads were equally horrible with potholes and road reconstruction was in progress. Maharashtra state transport local buses are also available from Mumbai and Pune, once you reach in Shrivardhan Town, you can explore nearby destinations by Auto rickshaw. You need to be a genius at bargaining skill with auto drivers.
SHRIVARDHAN
It was noon, till the time we reach Shrivardhan. We checked in to hotel and went in search of a Tasty fish thali. Later we visited Peshwa smarak, Somja devi temple, LakshmiNarayan temple and Shrivardhan beach.
Shrivardhan is a hometown and birthplace of Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath. Today the peshwa smarak temple is situated centrally in the town. The landmark is in the state of neglect and there is only statue of Peshwa and nothing else.
Shrivardhan beach is what every sea lover looking for. Calm beach with an empty and long stretch of a black sand. There are no water sports, and yet very few tourists visit here. A long walkway adjacent to beach sand has made by the government and also there are sitting arrangements at intervals. The beach and walkway both are very clean. Walkway also has many viewpoints. One can spend a relaxing evening on this beach.
Diveagar
Day 2 early morning, we left for Diveagar. Enroute to Diveagar there is aaravi beach, also known as kondivalli beach. You just cannot miss this beach. The drive along the sea is so satisfying.
Diveagar is most popular for the Ganpati idol of pure gold. You can also visit Rupanarayan temple.
Supari (Betel Nut) orchards and coconut groves that part to make way for the isolated beach. But now a days this is not at all an isolated beach. I had visited this beach in the morning around 8, even though it was busy by throng.
There are stalls at the entry of beach where they serve omelette bread, Maggi, Konkan special Ukadicha Modak, Tea and other snacks items. This beach provides water sports activities such as Parasailing, Banana ride, boat ride etc. You can also enjoy a horse cart riding on the beach.

HARIHARESHWAR
Harihareshwar is popularly known for its temple. Harihareshwar temple is always crowded by tourists. This sacred place has huge mythological history and very much of the importance. The parikrama route starts behind the temple. One need to first reach Ganesh Gully, from where you can step down and complete the parikrama by walking around rocky coastal hilly area. It can be very dangerous during high tide. Later you can spend time at harihareshwar beach.
Where to Eat?
Around all the three places, Shrivardhan, Harihareshwar and Diveagar, there are a number of small hotels and Khanawal available but at some places specially for home cooked food, you need to tell them in advance.
Shrivardhan – In the town there are a number of restaurants, who serves fish thali. We had visited KOKAN KINARA for lunch and hotel PRASAD for DInner. Both are recommended to visit in town. Must Try: Prawns Masala from Kokan Kinara and Fish Thali at hotel Prasad.
Harihareshwar – Shiv Sagar caterers are famous for their prawn masala and crab curry but here also you need to tell them in advance. Minimum 2 hours before. Also, you can check for Mohan Kutumbe Restaurant.
Where to Stay?
Harihareshwar, Diveagar are now popular tourist destinations. So, there are many home stays, budget hotels and very few options for luxury hotels available.
I had stayed at Hotel Sea Wind Resort. The hotel was superior and one of the best stay options into the meadow countryside. The hotel was well equipped with the pool, restaurant, spacious rooms and courteous staff. Besides the months of monsoon, Rest year the hotel is bit expensive for stay. They charge around 4,500 to 5,000/- per night on weekends.

This short trip gifted me immense pleasure and peace of mind in these two days. The relax evening walk at the beach side, the energetic morning with sea shores and adventurous sea parikrama, having mythological importance were unforgettable memories of my trip. One should definitely think about these places for a weekend trip or short family outing. My journey to Shrivardhan, Diveagar and Harihareshwar connected me with my town, my native place.
