A poster from a protest which says ”RIP mental health”
Tumblr media
A mural saying ”Dignity in Chile will cost you an eyeball”; it goes unsaid that by the personal experience of many (especially the families of killed, raped and injured protesters) it can even cost you more than that.

Also as a fun little nod in favor of Chilean protests Google maps now shows Baquedano square as ”Dignity square”. Its explained in the description.
Translation:” One of the moments that marked last friday’s protest in Baquedano square was when people unfurled a giant Chilean flag with an extra sign that declared it ”Dignity square” The idea behind the act planed by protesters was to rename that sector of the capital which was a meeting point to begin the march. Which is why today we are surprised to find that Google had adopted said change; When typing Baquedano square (plaza baquedano) on Google maps it shows it renamed as Dignity square (plaza dignidad). What are your thoughts?”

translation:”Just recently; Incredible aerial photos show the massive attendance to the biggest protest Concepción has had since the fall of the dictatorship. More than 100.000 people manifest in the national strike this tuesday november 12.”
Aaaand cops began throwing tear gas, without prompting, as far as im aware. People have the right to manifest peacefully; and to throw gas at a peaceful demonstration in order to keep “public order” is a violation to their rights.
(News from Santiago that I’m watching right now report similar overuse of force from police against the people protesting peacefully across the capital.)
Also a student named Jorge Barraza, who was working as medical aid, was violently detained:

basically the last thing you would experience in Chile for going to a protest and ending up loosing an eye because of your desire to manifest.
Police abuse and kill by overusing force, weapons and tear gas against civilians who are trying to exercise their rights

Video taken by me of a peaceful protest in “plaza de armas” (one of the main squares) in concepción, Chile
Also take note of how in the middle of the video a group of performers re-enacts the attitude police has had against protesters (they’re killing us)

yet more proof of police brutality in Chile 🇨🇱
If this is how they treat civilians in broad daylight just imagine what the people who survived to report rape, torture and more, went through

translation: “despite the rain, manifestations in concepcion continue”
This is a favorite of mine, yesterday here in concepcion was absolutely pouring during some moments of the day and yet i could hear the more daring people manifest, trying to make themselves heard as shown in this clip

Fragments from the 2001 documentary “I love Pinochet” by Marcela Said
The documentary is old but this is the mentality people from the high elites still have in Chile. A complete unawareness of their privileges, a blind faith in meritocracy, the belief that the other’s suffering is simply because they are lazy, uneducated, and not capable of working as hard as they do. Many times in the documentary they refer to the average Chilean with less than favorable adjectives and calmly say that they consider themselves apart from that segment of the population; and all of that just after they claimed that the people of Chile (the uneducated population) needed a strong leader like dictator Pinochet, to put them in line.
These people exist even today; i’ve meet them, seen, talked to them. People so entitled, so stuck to their beliefs and so secluded from the experience of the majority of the country to the point where they supported a dictatorship because they thought it “worth it”, in order to stop “communism” from reigning the country. These people sat back and supported a dictator that ordered the deaths of an overwhelming number of people, just because they opposed the government. Because they were “communists”; they were tortured and killed in special locations which functioned as concentration camps along the country.
That any kind of social wellfare is “communism”; and that all those of lower classes favor it because it means they can have what they, of “higher class”, “fought” to obtain. Anyone who lives in Chile and has come across people who think like the people shown in the documentary will know what i’m talking about. People like this are real and alive today. And they’re the ones thinking that the social unrest today is a second wave of “communism”; and that the police beating and killing and raping people are protecting the country from its own “uneducated lower class”.
Guys, we just want wellfare and basic rights; (like a pension of more than just US$200 monthly, please)

translation:
“people screaming- they’re killing us! For real, out there, they’re killing us!
deputy Pepe Auth- ...well, you go outside then”
Like many times demonstrated by government officials, in this case the level of apathy openly displayed is incredible
