Firstly, I am James, a keen photographer who for the last 9 years is known for the interior and abandoned architecture fine art photography work, however, I have occasionally dabbled in taking portraits of Jade and others to practice the art of lighting and to assist Jade in the up-keep of her portfolio as a fashion and beauty model.

Since 2014, Jade has taken modeling seriously, attempting to branch out and work with both amateur and professional photographers across the United Kingdom, starting from her base in the East of England.

I was always the adventurous type, so in January 2015, after shooting in abandoned places for just over 18 months, I decided to put an advert in an online forum called Purpleport, a place where photographers and models alike talk and discuss shoots either for TFP (Time for Prints) or for paid bookings. I was on a search for a few models to assist in a trial series of shoots, taking place in some of the best abandoned locations Great Britain had to offer.

Jade step forward and after some discussions, there we were ‒ standing inside Several’s Mental Asylum, a now demolished derelict hospital site near Jade’s hometown of Colchester, Essex.

It was only my second ever image taken inside these dark and poorly lit buildings. It was also a challenge as well as by 2015, Several’s was a place people were caught and turfed out very quickly by the security team.

Jade got ready in an upstairs room and we managed to take just three shots before also being caught by the security team. Nevertheless, we were happy because we had a great result.

Governor Issues Proclamation Honoring WNLA’s 100th Anniversary Commemorating its 100th Anniversary, Governor Scott Walker issued a State of Wisconsin Gubernatorial Proclamation on January 3, 2018 officially declaring it as Wisconsin Nursery & Landscape Association Day (WNLA). Governor Walker presented the Proclamation to WNLA President Ross Swartz in a ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison, Wisconsin. Also on hand were WNLA Board members and officers, Executive Director Brian Swingle, Representative Paul Tittl of Wisconsin’s 25th Assembly District, and Representative Amy Loudenbeck of the 31st Assembly District. The Proclamation recognizes the economic impact of WNLA and acknowledges the environmental and social impact of nursery plants and landscaping, mentioning the benefits of erosion control, noise abatement, water filtration and purification, air quality improvement, oxygen production, energy savings, community beautification and pride, plus the advantage to wildlife and pollinators that a robust landscape provides. The Wisconsin Nursery and Landscape Association serves the Green industry and its 225 members, which include growers, landscapers, and industry suppliers. WNLA is celebrating its 100th Anniversary with events in 2018.

MGIX Kicks Off January 15 with Powerhouse Lineup The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association’s regional conference, Midwest Green Industry Experience (MGIX) takes place January 15-17 at the Columbus Convention Center. Featured presenters include Marty Grunder (Attain, Train, Retain and Entertain a Modern Day Green Industry Workforce), Jeffrey Scott (Nine Proven Profit Strategies for Tree Lawn and Landscape Contractors). In addition to business education, the MGIX is loaded with courses on pruning, plant maintenance, identifying weeds and planning pest management strategies. It also includes a State of the Industry report by Craig Regelbrugge, AmericanHort.

Portland’s New Pesticide Ban Expected to be Costly Beginning July 1, 2019, residents and city workers will no longer be able to freely use synthetic pesticides in Maine’s largest city, except in a few limited cases, reports the Portland Press Herald. The City Council on January 3 unanimously passed an ordinance regulating pesticide use in Portland. Advocates say it’s one of strongest anti-pesticide ordinances in the country, with scofflaws facing potential fines ranging from $100 to $500. Portland will start using organic pesticides on all city-owned properties beginning this summer. The only exempt properties will be Hadlock Field, Riverside Golf Course and five high-use athletic fields that remain exempt until 2021. City staff estimates that the ordinance could cost up to $700,000 to implement. Those costs would cover new employees, equipment and up to a $250,000 set-aside to replace the turf on athletic fields.

WaterSmart Innovations Conference Issues Call for Abstracts Experts in the field of urban water efficiency are invited to submit abstracts for the 11th annual WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition (WSI), slated for October 3-5 in Las Vegas. Abstracts must be submitted to speakers no later than Monday, February 26. Professionals, scientists, government employees, organizations, public and private institutions, policy makers, students and all others working in an industry related to water efficiency are invited to submit an abstract for an oral presentation, panel discussion or workshop. A complete list of topics and submittal guidelines is available at the WSI website. Candidates chosen as presenters will be notified by email and postal mail no later than Monday, April 30.

Industry Consultant Dan Pestretto Forming Peer Groups Landscape business consultant/coach Dan Pestretto is forming “Mastermind Peer Groups” focused on helping owners build businesses that work for them. The groups will be based on honesty, accountability and the sharing of diverse perspectives in a safe haven of confidentiality. Group members will learn how to implement the “Seven Step Business Systemization” plan along with developing a complete operations manual specific to their own company and brand. Pestretto says affordable groups (no more than six members each) are being formed for different revenue-range companies, including companies of $500,000.

CASE Announces “Kickstart” Landscape Business Development Contest CASE Construction Equipment is now accepting entries for the CASE Kickstart Contest, a business development contest where landscaping contractors can win a suite of prizes designed to take their company to the next level. Ruppert Landscape Announces New Branch in Southern Richmond Ruppert Landscape has expanded its Virginia landscape management operations to include a new branch in southern Richmond. Story Of A Landscape: County Regulation Prompts Prize-Winning Permeable Project

How much can a good supplier do for a landscape company? Well, if you’re Shawano Lawn and Stone, it took a persistent salesperson for County Materials Corp., to recognize that the three-phase project the company did at a vacation home some 15 miles outside of town was award-worthy.

Shawano Lawn and Stone owner Pat Bohm says he’d even forgotten the project had been entered in a competition for the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association until he received an email telling him the job had won an award.

However, the WLCA judges weren’t mistaken about the project’s merit and it went on to earn honors at Hardscape North America (HNA) in the category of concrete paver — permeable — residential.

Bohm explains the job began in 2013, after a friend who does lawn maintenance recommended Shawano Lawn and Stone for a hardscape project job the property owner was contemplating. Bohm describes the property as a higher-end vacation cabin on a northern Wisconsin lake.

“The cabin is nothing to scoff at,” he says. “The only thing is that it’s unusual to see a Cape Cod-style home in this area. It looks like something you’d see on the East Coast.”

The first thing the client wanted was a fire pit.

“He wanted an area to have campfires, so the first thing we did was a circular firepit, probably about 20 feet from the lake,” Bohm says. “Because of the proximity to the lake, we’re required to do permeable paving brick according to county regulations.”

The client chose County Materials’ H2O Pro Pavers in Vision (white), bordered by the line’s Reflection (gray) color. The 4 by 8 pavers were set in a herringbone pattern.

When the client bought the property, as Bohm puts it “he inherited other people’s landscaping,” and he wasn’t necessarily sold on the wooden walkways around the home or the badly deteriorating deck on the back.

“The second year, we began taking up the wooden walkways and replacing them with permeable paving brick,” he says. “Then, we tore off the deck — and underneath that deck was another deck — and replaced it with a raised brick patio with a stone seating wall around it.”

Again, Bohm’s crew made certain to properly design the base materials and aggregates to ensure the system properly captures and filters storm water and effectively prevents runoff to protect the lake’s water quality.

Initially called back to the property for a third year in 2015 for what was supposed to be work on the cabin’s landscape, Bohm found himself with an unhappy customer — or rather the customer’s wife.

“We came back, and he said, ‘Pat, the patio that you did is too small; my wife wants it two feet bigger,’” Bohm relates. “I realized he was getting pressure from his wife, but I asked if he realized how much work would be involved in making it two feet bigger. He said, ‘You’ve got to make it bigger, and I’ll pay you every penny it costs to tear out what you did last fall and redo it.’”

Bohm estimates the finished patio now measures 14 feet by 30 feet. However, the size wasn’t the only problem the client’s wife had with the installation.

“She ended up not liking the seating wall, so we put in white vinyl railings when we redid the patio,” he says. “She also regretted not taking a closer look at the material we’d used on the raised patio, so rather than using the 4 by 8 bricks, we laid down 8 by 16 pavers, in the same color scheme, also in a herringbone pattern.”

Nor did the bricks that had been used in the first patio go to waste.

“We reused it as part of the job taking up the wooden walkways,” he explains. “We repurposed it in that area because it had only been laid for six or seven months. It was just less brick we had to order.”

In the end, Shawano Lawn and Stone ran a paver walkway from the front driveway to the backyard, widening out as it meets the patio and fire pit, adding space in that area. A roadside courtyard was also constructed of pavers off the walkway in the front yard.

As for the landscape project the company had initially expected to do the third year, that happened, too.

“We redid all the planting beds around the house,” Bohm says. “The client’s wife had a pure white marble shipped in from Georgia that went around the house. Because it’s a dark blue — almost to a green — color of siding with white trim, it looks really cool.”

He says each of the three phases cost the client between $10,000 and $15,000, and each took a double crew of men about a week to complete. Currently, the company is also maintaining the property.

It might have been the first piece of the project, but Bohm says his favorite feature is the fire pit.

“It’s a fun thing,” he says. “In this case it’s a grandpa wanting to create a place for the kids and grandkids, but there’s a lot of boating around here, and when I motor by a place where I did a patio or an outside living area and see people having a fire and socializing, it makes me feel good that they’re using it and enjoying it.”

With a flat lot and permeable pavers handling the drainage, he says his biggest challenge with the project was the client – but not for the obvious reason. Because the customer is a busy businessman, Bohm says rather than having too many meetings going into the first phase and too much micro-managing, he was quite the opposite.

“I’m not sure the customer and I even met onsite,” he says. “In the early stages, I was a bit unnerved because I was being allowed to do work at my discretion, using my judgment. My customer trusted my judgment and we didn’t even know each other.”

Later, he says as the relationship gained more traction, the client reiterated he was happy and to keep on doing what he’d been doing. And, Bohm says he’s particularly proud that when the wife was unhappy with the initial patio they were able to work things out.

“It wasn’t quite the way she wanted it to be,” he says. “We simply worked together to recreate the type of living space she wanted.”

Bohm’s also pleased by the awards the job has garnered, although he says the initial selection by WLCA truly caught him by surprise.

“My sales rep at County Materials wanted me to fill out the application for the award, and I said there’s just no place to carve out any time,” he says. ”She had one of the people at County Materials write it up for me, I edited it, they sent it in and I forgot about it. Then, the e-mail came, and the award was there, and I’m extremely proud of it.”

Story Of A Landscape: Dual Prize-Winning Project Built On A Foundation Of Drainage

Sometimes, what the client wants and what the landscape architect addresses are two vastly different things. A good example is a residential project undertaken by Atlanta-based Floralis Garden Design.

The property buyers were looking to beat back the overgrown plant life and create a place for their children to play. However, for landscape architect Lucinda Bray, a big part of the job turned out to be about drainage.

Bray explains that the homeowners were referred to Floralis by Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes, Inc., who was doing an architectural renovation of the home, and the property — a shoebox-shaped lot of slightly more than eight-tenths of an acre — was purchased with both renovations in mind.

The clients had some very specific desires, as well. Along with play space for their children, they wanted a pool and some outdoor entertaining spaces. And, they wanted the color scheme of the landscape to be predominantly green and white.

“Many of our projects tend to be on the green-and-white line,” Bray says, “People are looking for an evergreen basis to their landscape, something that’s a little more consistent year-round. When we do color, we like to use it in dedicated garden areas or containers for seasonal color.”

Bray and Floralis took on the landscaping for the entire property. She says work on the front and side of the house were tied primarily to architectural changes made by Ladisic.

“They changed the front door and the area directly surrounding it,” she says. “We rebuilt the front steps and did a new front walkway. The front foundation plantings were also outdated and overgrown and needed to match the rest of the project.”

The rear of the property wasn’t nearly as simple. Along with overgrown plant material, the landscape architect found a mix of grade changes, some low walls, and an abandoned pond. The rear terrace was in disrepair and the existing outdoor spaces suffered from poor transitions, as well.

Floralis’ design removed the rear landscape terrace, steps and pond. The area was also graded to create an extended space leading from the house. Not only did that provide room for a new pool, but also a large bluestone pool terrace, which was continued into the covered patio next to the house with a built-in grill and dining area.

A separate seating area done in pea gravel with a painted brick fireplace provides an additional entertaining area. The upper end of the property, which offers a flat, grassy play area for the children, is reached via stone steppers.

The plant palette for the project was particularly important given the clients’ desire for that green-and-white look. Not only did Bray work to pair architectural elements with landscape materials, but simplicity was key.

She explains that evergreen landscape components were grouped to frame and focus the architecture while providing balance to the overall look. Near the terrace, lines of hornbeams were also paired with low boxwood hedges to soften the hardscape and provide a sense of separation between outdoor spaces.

It’s the softscape that Bray says is her favorite part of the project.

“No matter what time of year you view it, it has a level of structure and stability,” she says. “Even in the dead of winter is reads so green and bright, and it really grounds the architecture of the house.”

Not that there weren’t a lot of challenges in getting the job done. One was an ill-timed rainstorm that ended up filling the swimming pool with mud from the bare hillside. A much larger one was managing the stormwater runoff for the whole property.

“As grading moved forward, subsurface drainage was installed,” Bray says. “There’s a fanned French drain system beneath the level play lawn on the uppermost level; a second, smaller French drain system beneath the formal lawn; strip drains along the stairs; area drains within the landscape planters and strip drains on the pool terrace.”

All of them pipe underground to a holding tank beneath the pea gravel fireplace terrace.

And, all this had to be done while keeping the logistics of the project in mind. Bray says that was the most-challenging aspect of the project, and she describes construction as being phased, with the architectural renovations being completed first, followed by the completion of the rear grading and upper lawn terraces.

“The last steps were the pool and lower wall being put in place,” she says. “This cut off all access to the rear of the property.”

Floralis utilized a general landscape contractor, Michael Jackson Landscape, to handle the grading, larger tree installation and lawn areas, while Ladisic folded some of the masonry work into his scope of the project, including the pool deck and the retaining walls.

“We also had an outside contractor, Irrigation Atlanta, come in to address the irrigation,” says Bray. “Otherwise, the landscape plantings, including the shrubs and hedges, were done in-house.”

Initial work on the redesign began in January 2015, and construction began that April with tree removals and the initial clearing and grading. However, because the project included the architectural renovation, Bray notes that construction wasn’t completed until July 2016.

The project won recognition from both the National Association of Landscape Professionals for projects in the $100,000-$500,000 range, and from the Georgia Urban Ag Council for projects of more than $150,000. However, Bray says she’s most proud of her relationship with the clients.

“Certainly, there are some bumps along the way with any project,” she says. “I think it’s how you deal with them and get past them to make sure that things are done property and to a quality standpoint. At the end of the project, if you have a great relationship, it speaks volumes on how you’ve handled yourself during construction.”

She has plenty of evidence to back up that success. While a job transfer took the owners out of the Atlanta area less than a year after the project was completed, Floralis has developed a new relationship with the people who bought the property. And, the company is also landscaping former owners’ new home — in Ohio.

While enjoying the plaudits from the project, Bray says from the perspective of learning something, this one was still all about the drainage.

“You plan for your standard rain event, and you expect that when it rains the installed drainage will function as intended,” she concludes. “But, when you’re designing drainage, you have to think about that one rain you don’t expect, the one that will drop a few inches of rain in an hour; you have to think about what’s going to happen then.

“It opens your eyes a bit too, to development in the city,” Bray adds. “What happens when the neighbors develop their property? Every time someone builds something, it changes the way the water runs, so we had to make sure we can accommodate it or have the future capacity to do so.”

MFTBC is planning to deliver 500 units of this generation to customers within the next two years. Larger scale production is intended to start in 2019.

Toro Announces 2018 Super Bowl Sports Turf Training Program The Toro Company is pleased to announce the 16th annual Toro Super Bowl Sports Turf Training Program. In January 2018, one lucky turfgrass science student will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to help the grounds crew prepare the field for the biggest game in football. Starting with the inaugural World Championship in 1967, the NFL grounds crew has relied on Toro for its expertise and equipment in preparing the game field and multiple practice facilities. In 2002, the organizations partnered to establish the Toro Super Bowl Sports Turf Training Program. This year’s recipient will work alongside NFL field director, Ed Mangan, George Toma, and the Super Bowl grounds crew at U.S. Bank Stadium on synthetic turf maintenance, logo painting, field preparation for media day, halftime preparation and field clean-up. Beginning on January 27, 2018, the winner will be on hand at U.S. Bank Stadium preparing the field leading up to the game on February 4, 2018.

Brandt Partners With SiteOne Brandt, a manufacturer of specialty products for the turf, agriculture and lawn and garden markets, signed a distribution agreement with SiteOne Landscape Supply. With this agreement, all Brandt and Brandt iHammer turf and ornamental products are available at all SiteOne locations. This is Brandt’s first national distribution agreement that covers the U.S. and Canada.

Vandalia Rental to Open Doors in Sharonville on October 2nd Vandalia Rental has announced that they will officially open on Monday, October 2, at their new facility in Sharonville, Ohio. The third generation family owned and operated business is known for its diverse fleet mix and honest sales approach that began when it was founded in 1961. With this latest expansion to Sharonville, the rental company will now service the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area in response to the increasing demand from the contractors requesting their presence. This expansion in Sharonville will be the third rental facility for the Ohio based company.

Industry Merger Creates SC Green Industry Association The South Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association and the South Carolina Landscape and Turfgrass Association have merged into one new organization named the SC Green Industry Association. For more than two years, the boards of directors have been working together to make the merger as seamless as possible and help bring a higher level of quality and value to their members. The merger officially took place on June 30, 2017 and the newly named SC Green Industry Association’s website was launched on July 31, 2017.

Davey Tree Adds 170-Acre Property to its Ohio Campus The Davey Tree Expert Company purchased 170 acres of land, the former site of a closed golf course, across from its 35-acre corporate campus here in northeast Ohio. The purchased property is to be known as the Davey East Campus and could also include additional office space for the company’s corporate functions. “A major part of our goal is to establish a science and learning center on the property and expand our capacity for technical research and specialized training,” said Davey Chairman Karl Warnke. “In addition, the property offers a variety of areas for showcasing many of Davey’s diverse services, whether they be wetland management in the riparian that abuts the Cuyahoga River, our golf course maintenance expertise, or the core tree services we provide. We intend to make this property a unique showplace for our rich history, extensive capabilities and future direction.”

SiteOne Acquires South Coast Supply SiteOne Landscape Supply, Inc.  has announced the acquisition of South Coast Supply. Started in 1981, South Coast Supply has two locations serving the Orange County, California market. South Coast Supply is a leader in the distribution of hardscape, natural stone and related products to landscape professionals. The acquisition of South Coast Supply expands SiteOne’s hardscape offering and footprint in Orange County.

Bill Law Joins Ruppert Landscape as Facility Manager Ruppert Landscape recently hired Bill Law as facility manager in the company’s corporate office. Law will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of all Ruppert Landscape owned and leased facilities. Law brings more than 30 years of experience in residential and commercial remodeling and restoration. For the past 11 years, he ran a successful design and remodeling company. He is a returning to Ruppert, having worked for Ruppert Brothers Construction more than 20 years ago.

TurfMutt Offers Dog-Friendly Backyard Landscaping Tips National Dog Day is Saturday, Aug. 26. In honor of this holiday, Lucky the TurfMutt, a rescue dog himself and the official spokesdog of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute environmental education program, encourages pet parents to reevaluate their family yard to ensure it’s appropriate for their furry friends. Here are TurfMutt’s top five tips:

Consider your dog’s needs in terms of water (including a water fountain or splash pool?), a perimeter running path or a place to dig, such as a sand pit. Jot down everything your dog needs from your family yard, then you map out your landscaping accordingly.

Keep your pet safe with a secure fence.

Include turfgrass that offers your pet a soft, cool spot to lie down, even during the hottest conditions. It also creates a comfortable backyard playground, and provides a place to take care of business – just be sure to clean up regularly.

Select the right balance of grass, flower plants, trees and shrubs for beauty but also to help support biodiversity. Select appropriate landscaping for the areas you’ve identified in your yard. Around walking paths, for instance, you’ll want to include sturdy, yet soft foliage that can stand up to puppy and people traffic without scratching. Use elevated boxes and patio planters for more delicate flowering plants.

Avoid toxic plants. Some plants and shrubs are poisonous to dogs. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has a list of toxic plants that you should refer to when shopping for your family yard.

Kawaski Adds Parts Distribution From UPS In Southeast The Engines Division of Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. is once again expanding its relationship with UPS Supply Chain Solutions and adding a full service warehouse in Florida to stock and ship parts to authorized dealers in the region. The UPS facility that is joining Kawasaki’s broadened distribution network is located in Jacksonville and it will be providing enhanced support for dealers in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.  Measuring approximately 15,000-square feet, the unit will be fully operational by the middle of August.

Ewing Announces Strategic Transitions To Support Locations, Employees Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply recently implemented five strategic transitions to provide greater and more focused support to its stores in 200 locations and employees. These transitions include re-defining and aligning Ewing’s geographic divisions, focusing on employee development and customer education with the creation of the Talent Resources department, merging several shared financial services into one department, combining sales and marketing teams and strengthening its focus on business development.

Judge Overturns Montgomery County, Maryland, Pesticide Ban On Thursday, Aug. 3, in Montgomery County, Maryland, Circuit Judge Terrence McGann ruled in favor of the professional landscape community and struck down the countywide ban of commercial pesticide application on public and private lawns, gardens, and ornamental sites, reports Paul Mendelsohn of the National Association of Landscape Professionals.

In October 2015 the Montgomery County Council voted 6-3 to restrict the use of pesticides on both county-owned and private property. In addition to eliminating the use of pesticides on private lawns beginning on January 1, 2018, the bill limited pesticide use on public and private playgrounds, mulched recreation areas and children’s facilities such as child care centers. The ban on county-owned property and parks was supposed to have gone into effect on July 1.

In a 14-page opinion explaining his ruling, McGann found that “by generally banning the use of registered pesticides, the Ordinance prohibits and frustrates activity that is intended to be permitted by state law, which conflicts with, and is thus, preempted by state law.”

Ewing Hires Names Jeff Lanahan as Executive Vice President Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply announced Jeff Lanahan as the executive vice president of business development. In this new role, Lanahan will participate in strategy development and execution for the company’s continued growth and expansion. Lanahan previously served as COO at Pioneer Sand Company. Prior to that, he led the John Deere Landscapes Division as senior vice president for 14 years, also held leadership roles at Century Rain Aid for six years, leaving as the executive vice president.

Irrigation Association now offering classes & CIT Exam in Spanish The learning and certification opportunities at the 2017 Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Orlando, Florida, have expanded. Along with more than 25 agriculture, turf-landscape and business classes and 11 certification exams that will take your industry expertise to the next level, the IA is now offering selected opportunities in Spanish. A Drip Irrigation Components and Installation for Landscapes class and the Landscape Irrigation Technician class will be offered in Spanish during the Irrigation Show. A Spanish version of the certified irrigation technician exam will also be offered.

Houzz Design & Architecture Scholarship Call for Entries Houzz Inc. has announced the call for entries for Houzz Scholarships, a program that supports the next generation of residential design and architecture pros: students studying architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture. Houzz will award four $2,500 scholarships in the categories of ‘Women in Architecture’, ‘Sustainable Design,’ ‘Residential Interior Design’ and ‘Residential Construction Management’. Houzz awards these scholarships biannually in the spring and fall, and is now accepting applications for spring 2018. The deadline for the spring 2018 scholarships is December 15, 2017.

ASLA Launches Diversity SuperSummit Report and Online Resources The American Society of Landscape Architects has launched its ASLA Diversity SuperSummit 2017 Report, which highlights strategies and action items to increase diversity in the landscape architecture profession. The takeaways in the report will serve as accountability for ASLA and as an actionable guide for the Society’s newly created career discovery and diversity position for the upcoming year. In 2013, ASLA had its first Diversity Summit with the goal of developing a deeper understanding of why landscape architecture is failing to attract a more diverse profile. Five years later, the 2017 Diversity SuperSummit brought the largest group of attendees to date, with 23 returning and six new participants, at the ASLA Center for Landscape Architecture in Washington, D.C.  In addition to the SuperSummit Report, ASLA has also launched the Diversity Summit webpage.

MTD Subsidiary Announces Pending Merger with Robomow Maker A subsidiary of MTD Products Inc. is set to merge with F. Robotics Acquistions, makers of the Robomow, robotic residential lawn mowers sold mainly in Europe. The merger is expected to close around July 2, 2017, pending governmental and other approvals, says a release from MTD. Following the merger, Robomow’s operations will remain headquartered in Pardesiya, Israel, and its present management team will continue to lead the company with support from MTD’s European, North American and Asia-Pacific divisions.

Makita USA Opens New Distribution/Training Facility in Texas Makita USA’s new distribution and training center is located in the City of Wilmer just outside Dallas, Texas. The new facility is located on nearly 25 acres of land with 227,230 square feet of warehouse space with operational capabilities. It is an expansion of Makita’s current warehouse chain, which includes operations in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, and Buford, Georgia, as well as the Makita USA home office in La Mirada, California. The Buford facility includes a manufacturing and assembly plant, one of ten Makita manufacturing plants active around the world.

Toro, Virginia Tech Partner for GPS Sprayer Technology Research Toro is partnering with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), Blacksburg, Virginia, to aid in GPS sprayer technology research efforts. Full access to a new Toro Multi Pro 5800 with GeoLink has been provided to the university to support the project. The unit was put in use at the recent Virginia Turfgrass Research Classic at The Country Club of Virginia. The event includes a golf tournament to raise funds for turfgrass research, as well as a field day where guests are encouraged to visit turfgrass plots setup by Virginia Tech researchers on which the new Toro Multi Pro 5800 with GeoLink will be on display. Virginia Tech and Toro’s Center for Advanced Turf Technology (CATT) will share in the research findings at the end of the research period of approximately two years.

Akehurst Landscape, Vendors Equip K-9 Unit with Lawn Gear Akehurst Landscape Service, Inc., based in Joppa, Maryland, presented the Harford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit with lawn care equipment. Akehurst presented the H.C.S.O. K-9 Unit a Wright Stander mower along with some Echo hand held power tools to maintain their dog training campus and shooting range in Northern Harford County.

Kawaski Engines Names Dave Sugden R&D Director The Engines Division of Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. recently named Dave Sugden as the director of research and development.  An experienced industry executive, Sugden has had product development responsibilities for 27 years, most recently as director of product design and improvement at Scag Power Equipment. Sugden will manage the growing R&D function at Kawasaki that has recently seen its staffing increase significantly, with new additions in technology, calibration, electrical, and testing, as well as supporting administrative personnel. Also, Troy Smith, moves up from applications engineering supervisor to become manager of R&D testing, applications and EFI, and JJ Zeilstra who becomes manager of new development and government relations.

Florida Landscape Company Announces $1,000 Scholarship Westcoast Landscape and Lawns, a leading Florida commercial landscaper, has created the Landscaping and Horticultural Science Scholarship, available to students across the country. The company is offering the $1,000 scholarship once a year, to one U.S. undergraduate student studying landscape architecture, landscape design, or horticultural sciences. Information and submissions guidelines can be found online.

TurfMutt Named an Official Education Partner of the U.S. Green Building Council The U.S. Green Building Council has named TurfMutt, the environmental stewardship and education program for students in grades K-5, an official education partner. Educational activities for grades K-5 developed for TurfMutt by Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, will be featured on Learning Lab, USGBC’s online platform for K-12 curriculum.

Second Location Added to NALP Renewal & Remembrance The National Association of Landscape Professionals will hold its annual Renewal & Remembrance and Legislative Days on the Hill events, July 16-18, in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. This year a second location has been added at the United States Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery, more commonly known as the Soldiers’ Home, which is one of the country’s oldest national cemeteries. A small team of volunteers will do liming and aeration at the Soldiers’ Home in addition to the larger annual project at Arlington National Cemetery.

Rutgers Extension Offers Organic Land Care Manual A new 27-page Organic Land Care Best Management Practices Manual from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension is available for a free download. While the manual, co-authored by Amy Rowe and Michele Bakacs, provides recommendations to landscape contractors and land managers on how to conduct organic land care in New Jersey, the information is pertinent to other regions of the United States, as well.
