George W. Maher, architect - part 2
My previous post focused on Maher-designed houses on Hutchinson St., now a Chicago historic district. For this post, I spent part of a day photographing some of Maher's other residential work in Chicago.
Stevenson-Colvin House
Address: 5940 N. Sheridan Rd.
Year Built: 1909
Architect: George W. Maher

The Stevenson-Colvin House
The Harry M. Stevenson house at 4950 N. Sheridan Road dates to 1909 and is a rare survivor of the large homes that lined the street in the first decades of the 20th century. The house, referred to today as the Colvin house for its second owner, features a distinctive Maher dormer, second floor windows recessed behind columns, and a motif of tulips and triangles. It has been restored in recent years and now functions as an events venue.

This house is an amalgamation of the Sullivanesque, Colonial Revival, and Prairie styles. It was originally commissioned by wealthy businessman Patrick J. King, but its most well-known occupant was the influential Irish-Catholic politician Patrick A. Nash, who lived here from 1925 to 1943, when Washington Boulevard was one of the city's most-fashionable addresses.

Completed the same year that Maher was devising a master plan for the Northwestern University campus, the Magerstadt House sits sideways on its deep, narrow lot, with the front door facing what is now the driveway. This house is probably one of the finest works of George W. Maher, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, and one of the Prairie School. It shows a relationship to Wright's work of the time in its cubist massing, ribbons of windows, simple, low-pitched roof, and deep, unbroken eaves. The influence of Art Nouveau is also evident, as is seen in the extensive use of the poppy motif in the ornament and interior finish.

Dr. DeNorval Unthank (December 14, 1899 - September 20, 1977) a civil rights advocate and a respected leader in the Black community of Portland, Oregon, was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. After his mother died, his father sent him to live with an aunt and uncle in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended the University of Michigan and the University of Kansas where he graduated with a BA. He received an MD from Howard University.
He was recruited to Portland because the city’s small African American community did not have a Black doctor. He and his wife were tested as white neighbors greeted their first attempt to move into an all-white residential area with broken windows, threatening phone calls, and general harassment. He moved his family four times before finding a place to settle down peacefully.
He was Portland’s only Black medical practitioner. Black families could not receive treatment in hospitals, house calls were necessary, and he made himself available day and night. He served African Americans, Asians, and many whites as well.
He was elected head of the Advisory Council. The Council documented incidents of discrimination in the workplace around Portland despite raised expectations following President Franklin Roosevelt’s signing of Executive Order 8802.
He worked tirelessly to build his medical practice and promote civil rights. He became the first Black member of Portland’s City Club. He served as president of the local chapter of the NAACP and was a co-founder of the Portland Urban League. He played a strong role in the passing of Oregon’s 1953 Civil Rights Bill, which among many issues, overturned a law banning interracial marriages in the state.
The Oregon Medical Society named him Doctor of the Year. Grateful citizens pressed the city to dedicate DeNorval Unthank Park in North Portland in his honor.
He married Thelma Shipman and had five children including prominent Portland architect DeNorval Unthank Jr. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphaphialpha

5V Metal Roof Panels
5V Metal Roof Panels: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Usefulness, Benefits, and Value for Your Construction Projects
In the world of construction and roofing, the choice of materials can significantly impact the durability, aesthetics, and overall performance of a building. Among the myriad of options available, 5V metal roof panels have emerged as a popular choice for both residential and commercial projects. Their unique combination of strength, longevity, and visual appeal makes them a valuable addition to any construction endeavor. In this article, we will delve into the various aspects that make 5V metal roof panels an excellent choice, exploring their usefulness, benefits, and overall value. We will also highlight why Innovative Sheet Metals is the best place to purchase these high-quality panels.
Introduction to 5V Metal Roof Panels
5V metal roof panels, also known as 5V crimp metal panels, are a type of metal roofing characterized by their distinctive V-shaped ribs. These ribs are designed in a repeating pattern of five, hence the name 5V. This design not only enhances the structural integrity of the panels but also contributes to their unique aesthetic appeal. Typically made from galvanized steel or aluminum, 5V metal roof panels are coated with protective finishes to enhance their resistance to corrosion and weathering.
The popularity of 5V metal roof panels can be attributed to their versatility and performance. They are suitable for a wide range of applications, from residential homes to agricultural buildings and commercial structures. Their classic look, combined with modern engineering, ensures that they provide both beauty and functionality, making them a preferred choice for many builders and architects.
Usefulness of 5V Metal Roof Panels
Versatility in Applications
One of the primary reasons for the widespread use of 5V metal roof panels is their versatility. These panels can be used in various construction scenarios, including:
Residential Roofing: 5V panels are an excellent choice for residential properties due to their aesthetic appeal and durability. They complement a variety of architectural styles, from traditional to contemporary, providing a timeless look that enhances curb appeal.
Agricultural Buildings: For barns, sheds, and other agricultural structures, 5V metal roof panels offer excellent protection against the elements. Their sturdy construction ensures they can withstand harsh weather conditions, making them ideal for rural settings.
Commercial Buildings: Commercial properties benefit from the durability and low maintenance of 5V panels. They provide a professional and polished appearance while ensuring the building remains well-protected for years.
Industrial Facilities: In industrial settings, where robust and long-lasting roofing materials are crucial, 5V metal roof panels excel. Their strength and resistance to environmental factors make them a reliable choice for factories and warehouses.
Durability and Longevity
5V metal roof panels are renowned for their exceptional durability. Unlike traditional roofing materials such as asphalt shingles or wood, metal panels are not susceptible to rot, insect damage, or warping. The galvanized steel or aluminum construction provides a robust barrier against the elements, ensuring the roof remains intact and functional for decades. Additionally, the protective coatings applied to these panels further enhance their resistance to corrosion, rust, and UV radiation.
The longevity of 5V metal roof panels translates to significant cost savings over time. While the initial investment may be higher compared to some other roofing materials, the reduced need for repairs and replacements makes them a cost-effective choice in the long run.
Benefits of 5V Metal Roof Panels
Energy Efficiency
One of the standout benefits of 5V metal roof panels is their energy efficiency. Metal roofs have excellent reflective properties, meaning they reflect a significant portion of the sun's heat rather than absorbing it. This reflective quality helps keep buildings cooler in hot weather, reducing the need for air conditioning and subsequently lowering energy bills. Some metal roofs can also be coated with specialized finishes that enhance their reflective capabilities, further improving energy efficiency.
In colder climates, 5V metal roof panels also offer benefits. They help retain heat within the building, reducing the strain on heating systems and contributing to overall energy savings. This dual functionality makes them an excellent choice for various climates and weather conditions.
Environmental Sustainability
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration in construction, 5V metal roof panels stand out as an environmentally friendly option. Metal roofing materials are often made from recycled content, and at the end of their lifespan, they can be fully recycled again. This reduces the environmental impact associated with roofing materials that end up in landfills.
Moreover, the energy efficiency of metal roofs contributes to a reduction in overall energy consumption, aligning with green building practices and reducing the carbon footprint of a structure. By choosing 5V metal roof panels, builders and homeowners can make a positive contribution to environmental sustainability.
Low Maintenance
Maintenance is a critical factor when considering roofing materials, and 5V metal roof panels require minimal upkeep compared to other options. Traditional roofing materials like asphalt shingles or wood require regular inspections, repairs, and treatments to maintain their integrity and appearance. In contrast, metal roofs are highly resistant to common issues such as moss growth, rot, and insect infestation.
The durability of 5V metal roof panels means that they can withstand extreme weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, hail, and high winds, without sustaining damage. This resilience reduces the need for frequent repairs and extends the overall lifespan of the roof, making it a low-maintenance and cost-effective solution.
Aesthetic Appeal
In addition to their practical benefits, 5V metal roof panels also offer significant aesthetic value. The clean, crisp lines created by the V-shaped ribs provide a distinctive and attractive appearance that can enhance the visual appeal of any building. Available in a variety of colors and finishes, these panels can be customized to suit different architectural styles and personal preferences.
The timeless look of 5V metal roof panels ensures that they remain stylish and relevant, regardless of changing trends in building design. This aesthetic versatility makes them a popular choice for both new constructions and renovations, allowing builders and homeowners to achieve a sophisticated and cohesive look.
Fire Resistance
Safety is a paramount concern in construction, and 5V metal roof panels excel in this regard. Metal roofing materials are inherently fire-resistant, providing an added layer of protection for buildings. Unlike wood or asphalt shingles, metal does not ignite or contribute to the spread of fire, making it a safer choice for properties in areas prone to wildfires or where fire safety is a priority.
This fire resistance can also have financial benefits, as some insurance companies offer discounts on premiums for homes and buildings with metal roofs due to their reduced risk of fire damage.
Value of 5V Metal Roof Panels
Cost-Effectiveness
While the initial cost of installing 5V metal roof panels may be higher than some other roofing materials, their long-term cost-effectiveness is undeniable. The extended lifespan, reduced maintenance requirements, and energy efficiency all contribute to significant savings over time. Homeowners and businesses can expect lower utility bills, fewer repair expenses, and a longer interval before needing a roof replacement.
Additionally, the durability of 5V metal roof panels means that they are less likely to be damaged by severe weather, further reducing the potential for costly repairs. This long-term financial advantage makes them a wise investment for any construction project.
Increased Property Value
The installation of 5V metal roof panels can also enhance the overall value of a property. Prospective buyers often recognize the benefits of metal roofing, including its durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance requirements. As a result, homes and buildings with metal roofs can command higher prices in the real estate market.
The aesthetic appeal of 5V metal roof panels also contributes to increased property value. A well-maintained, visually appealing roof can improve curb appeal and make a positive first impression on potential buyers, further boosting the property's marketability.
Improved Structural Integrity
The strength and resilience of 5V metal roof panels contribute to the overall structural integrity of a building. Metal roofing systems are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including high winds, heavy snow loads, and hail. This added protection ensures that the underlying structure remains safe and secure, reducing the risk of damage and extending the lifespan of the building.
In areas prone to severe weather, such as hurricanes or tornadoes, the robustness of 5V metal roof panels can be particularly valuable. Their ability to resist uplift and other forms of damage provides peace of mind and enhances the safety of the occupants.
Conclusion
In summary, 5V metal roof panels offer a compelling combination of usefulness, benefits, and value for a wide range of construction projects. Their versatility makes them suitable for residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial applications. The durability, energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, low maintenance, aesthetic appeal, and fire resistance of these panels make them a smart choice for builders and homeowners alike.
Investing in 5V metal roof panels not only ensures a long-lasting and visually appealing roof but also provides significant cost savings and enhanced property value over time. For those looking to maximize the benefits of their construction projects, choosing high-quality 5V metal roof panels is a prudent decision.
When it comes to purchasing 5V metal roof panels, look no further than Innovative Sheet Metals. Renowned for their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, Innovative Sheet Metals offers a wide range of metal roofing products that meet the highest standards of performance and durability. By choosing Innovative Sheet Metals, you can be confident in the longevity and reliability of your roofing investment, ensuring that your construction project stands the test of time.

You can see the concrete slab with holes under the water from where the river bends to reach the edge of my property line, so is coming from underneath my property, this is also true of my neighbors property line where there is a wooden dock that was destroyed by blight throughout the years but I stuck the endoscope through the dock, and the endoscope caught concrete on video which I will post but I have a lot of videos to go through from my endoscope footage to find the day when I took the video was underneath the dock, through a hole in the wood and there is concrete underneath my neighbors property extending to the river as their property line meets a bend in the river as well, if I can’t find the video right away, I’ll go outside and re-record the evidence but either way this is only the beginning of discovering what the evil souls that were plotting (decades before my father actually bought our house and before it was built) & how they the overseers of the subdivisions development through a house they deliberately built to be hidden within the 6 acres of state property the residential neighborhoods are built around, prior to Wildwood Trail & Lincolnshire subdivisions being built. Their house (28120) that is the main hideout of the heads of the dragon & has two driveways, extending from the east and west of the property with the driveway to the east, emptying out onto inkster Road & the driveway to the west shares a driveway with a house on Wildwood Trail that conceals the property from street view & only from aerial photography on Google maps satellite view, historicaerials.com, or the Oakland county Michigan aerial viewer ARCGIS website can you see the house hidden on all sides by woods, unable to be seen from Wildwood Trail St., Inkster Road and only able to be seen from the subdivision bike path through the woods from the bike path’s southside. They deliberately built the subdivision in order to con my father into buying one of the houses in Lincolnshire subdivision on BRIARWYKE in 1988 (which is still my residence since 1988/legal address on my driver’s license/ID and is my house who was murdered here as we both were in December 1988, so this is my families home which is MY house until my father and mother come back in the RESURRECTION WHICH HASN’T HAPPENED YET), and they conned him into buying the house in order to murder me, my father as well as everybody who bought a house in the neighborhoods as many times as necessary for them to murder us all and would take us to the house in the middle of the woods, where they have cells lined with 9 inch nails that protrude out through the wood to hold victims captive and torture us to death (the house is depicted in music videos for “prison sex”, “sober”, “stink fist”all songs by TOOL, “What’s he building” by Tom Waits and “locked in a box” and “my phone died”by Cal Scruby. Actual footage of the house may also be in Nine Inch Nails Broken as the “shrine” mentioned in the Jakprogresso song “Cattle Grid”. If you look at the top floors (which would be the attic levels) of all the houses in my subdivision instead of windows, where the attics are, there are ventilation windows that are always open like heating/air conditioning vents inside a house with slats rather than windows that open & close, which makes no sense from a architectural perspective because by putting permanently open grates where the attic is on every single house in the subdivision the architect is basically implying that the attics needs to be ventilated at all times it is not going to be utilized as a living space or even a storage space.

Robert Rochon Taylor (April 12, 1899 - March 1, 1957) was an architect and early housing activist in Chicago, who became Chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority. He is the son of Robert Robinson Taylor who was the first African American to graduate from MIT and the first Black professor of architecture at Tuskegee University. He is the grandfather of Valerie Jarrett, the senior advisor to President Barack Obama.
Born in Cleveland, he studied architecture at Howard University before graduating from the University of Illinois with a BS in Business Administration, for three years he gained valuable experience running a sawmill designed by his father in Opelika, Alabama. He moved to Chicago where he became more involved in the real estate and insurance business. He became the secretary and general manager of Liberty Life Insurance Company of America and helped design the Michigan Boulevard Garden Apartments.
He worked with a group of local Black business leaders who formed the Illinois Federal Savings and Loan Association, one of only two savings and loan institutions that provided mortgages to would-be Black homeowners on Chicago’s South Side. He believed in safe and affordable housing for Chicagoans and along with other city officials of the era, sought to remove slums from the South Side Black community known as the Black Belt. He was a proponent of scattering public housing throughout Chicago which many civil rights advocates called for to promote residential integration in this racially divided city.
He remained the Chair of the Chicago Housing Authority until 1950 when a dispute with the Chicago City Council over future sites for public housing prompted his resignation. He opposed the City Council’s efforts to limit Black occupancy in public housing projects to all-Black neighborhoods and resigned when it became evident that city leaders were intent on preserving racial segregation.
In 1959, the massive South Side Public Housing Project that was initiated that year was named the Robert Rochon Taylor Homes. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #kappaalphapsi

In the early years of the 20th Century, John H. Kunsky (1875 - 1952) built a movie palace empire in Detroit, with the help of noted theater architect, C. Howard Crane. Beginning with the Columbia Theatre (1911), which was located on Monroe Avenue, the heart of the city's original theater district. When that district moved further north to Grand Circus Park, Kunsky called upon Crane to design a slew of grand houses of cinema; the Madison, the Adams, which was housed in the Louis Kamper-designed Fine Arts Building, the Capitol (now the Detroit Opera House), the Michigan and the State (Fillmore), just to name a few. Grand Circus Park, for a time, became known as "Kunsky's Circle." When it was time for Kunsky's own home in Palmer Woods, Kunsky stayed with Crane. The result is a fanciful, theatrical, if you will, example of a half-tumbered cottage. The interior is full of delights too, such as a Jacobean-carved stone fireplace in the living room and hand-carved rosewood paneling. Crane's residential commissions may not be as well-known, but in my opinion, this ranks among his best work. It's my personal favorite in PW, which is saying much. #Detroit #NorthwestDetroit #PalmerWoods #TudorRevival #TudorCottage #CottageStyle #ArtsandCraftsArchirecture #EnglishArchitecture #CHowardCrane #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Palmer Woods) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTbVPGXMaTF/?utm_medium=tumblr
