NEMESIS, goddess of revenge
In Greek mythology Nemesis is the name of the goddess of revenge and vengeance. The Romans called her Invidia, which is the latin word for envy. She had two brothers named Charon (ferryman to the dead) and Hypnos (the personification of sleep), and her sister Eris is the goddess of Discord.
What is Nemesis?
In Resident Evil 3: Nemesis the main antagonist is named Nemesis T-Type, nicknamed the Pursuer. He is presumably named Nemesis after the Greek goddess of vengeance. Nemesis T-Type is one of the two greatest of all bio-weapons created by the Umbrella Corporation.
Can Nemesis be good? In Rick Riordan's series Percy Jackson and the Olympians Nemesis is initially portrayed as a bad character, but it is later on pointed out that she is also the goddess of balance. The balance between good and evil is a necessity, and without balance there'd be neither good nor bad. While she's not a typically "good" character and may fall on the "evil" side in many aspects, good would probably not exist without her and the balance she keeps between good and evil.
Is it normal to have a nemesis? Most libraries will probably have a copy of the Agatha Christie novel Nemesis. If you are a main character it is highly advised to have a nemesis, especially if your story is about the fight between good and evil. It is not normal to have a proposed dwarf star from the Sun's extreme outer orbit in your possession. The asteroid in the main belt, 128 Nemesis, is probably best left where it is.
What is going on here?
Are you wondering what the eff I'm going on about? This is a quick example of what an SEO blog post could look like, using the keyword "nemesis" and a bit of googling to find the most commonly asked questions and related searches. The closer you can match what people will search for, the better. SEO blogposts is a new requirement for all sites, calling for 2 blogposts per week using keywords that the Mugs send out each week. The keyword must be used at least 7 times, including headlines. It's a pretty standard SEO structure.
It's tricky to write a good blog post using the SEO requirements, but the point with SEO isn't that the blog post has to be good - it just has to contain certain words a certain number of times. If it feels forced and awkward that's because it is pretty forced and awkward. Admittedly, this example is not a serious attempt at making a SEO blogpost. This is a me making a bad example on purpose to make a point. But I am still following the instructions and meeting (surpassing, actually) all the requirements. As far as SEO goes, it's an excellent example. Some people might even find it somewhat amusing.
SEO - friend or nemesis? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and it's all about getting your website or article onto the first page of results on the online search engines like Google. It's a pretty big deal. If someone searches "roleplay forum percy jackson" we'd want World of Olympus to be the top result, right? Without SEO it could easily end up at the bottom of the page and how many people will scroll that far? Not many. SEO is a really big deal.
[NOTE: I am not an expert on this and with only mere hours of research under my belt on such a complicated thing as SEO, it's very possible that my understanding and portrayal of it might not be entirely accurate. If I'm waaay off, please correct me.]
So by following the new blog rules and squeezing in keywords wherever possible, WoX sites will show up on top when people google the keywords? Don't be silly. It'll help a little bit, sure, but the real trick is SEO within the site code and content of the site as a whole. Saying "nemesis" a dozen times in a blog post certainly helps as the numbers add up, but don't expect your SEO-ed blogpost to bring in new users as if you're running paid ads. It's not magic, it takes work and strategic marketing. This is a long game. It will take months of SEO-ing to improve your site's SEO. It's worth doing but it needs to be done right. If your SEO-ed blogposts are as bad as my example, you're gonna lose a lot of respect and reputation in the many months it will take to get actual SEO results. Quantity comes at the cost of quality, especially if you don't have the time and resources to do it well. A lot of sites don't have the capacity to churn out biweekly blog posts right now, especially not with the additional requirement to figure out what this SEO thing is and how to do it without looking… well, desperate and pathetic.
SEO is important and it is worth doing. But at what cost? What is the point of showcasing the site blogs if the content on them doesn't show the best that the site has to offer? My suggestion is this: encourage SEO through support and positive reinforcement, not by force or pressure. This is volunteer work, after all. Take it slow, one step at a time. Be patient and let it take the time it takes. It's not magic and it won't work overnight either way, and if you don't do it right you might end up spending even more time and resources having to correct for it in the long run.
One step at a time. Don't try to run before you've learned to walk.

Is so fascinating how fake news is so easily spreading on Resident Evil fandom omg
We have here a huge fandom, with many different people interested in it. There will be those who will purposely pick straws of certain things/interviews/informations and misplace them to back up their own point of view of things while ignoring things said by the same person OR by someone on the same level as the other; but they ignore because they Don't like what the other said.
And people will hear it, like it, and continue to spread it. it is a 28 years old franchise, there are MANY old informations with no source anymore, or that got lost in the ocean of infos that the Internet has in store.
It is not like baby-franchises (aka, new franchises), like The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, Cyberpunk... Where every single interview -, from the game concept to the sequels of the game, can still be easily found.
Resident Evil is a 28 years old franchise. And NEW fans will want to know more details, but now all they have are old fans who have in store and in their mind OLD informations that we may not even have the source of anymore!
IT. IS. A. 28. YEARS. OLD. FRANCHISE. Google didn't even EXIST back then!
But leaving it to the fandom is the problem, because then you have stupid people who will want YOU to take THEIR side of it as if THEY are the most reliable sourcer since Capcom while being completely biased.
Example: The same artist leader and director who mentioned about Leon as an "emigrated America from Italy" is ALSO THE SAME GUY who said: "Leon arrives later in his first day because his girlfriend broke up with him the night before"
But we see a bigger commotion and acceptance only about ONE of this claims. While the other, people give excuses to not acknowledge it or simply ignore it.
But most importantly, we have a fatherless franchise. A franchise that is NOT respected by the developers. They produce games even before they know what is the direction they want to take it.
Capcom does NOT want to work with Resident Evil anymore. But they feel forced to, because it is their Worldwide Successful franchise. They can not simply wait for the world to forget all about it. Even after Resident Evil 6, people were still hyping about the concept idea of a Resident Evil 7.
Because they love the franchise.
So, yes. The fandom is the one keeping the franchise up and running. Because if we were to leave it up to Capcom... The franchise would've been dead already by now.
And they would not care about it. All Capcom cares about now is Monster Hunter and the success it is in Japan.

Genres of horror, and some rampant speculations about Resident Evil 9
At time of writing, all we really know about Resident Evil 9 is there’s inevitably going to be one, because RE8 made bank. There are some supposed ‘leaks’ about their plans, but not much to suggest they’re genuine. Naturally, there’s no end of speculation online: will we be moving on from the Winters family? Will we see a returning protagonist like Jill Valentine? Will we be moving back to third-person viewpoint? Will we be continuing the trend of hiding the roman numerals somewhere in the title? Etc.
All well and good, but what’s got me wondering is whether we’ll be continuing the trend set by those last two titles, and jump into a whole new genre of horror for RE9.
Tumblr media
See, as everyone already knows, Resident Evil 7 is basically one big love letter to the slasher horror genre. Using Cabin in the Woods conventions, we can narrow that right down to the classic Zombie Redneck Torture Family genre – not that the game lacks for other influences and references. You’ve got some found footage/analogue horror in the old video tapes, those creepy phone calls coming-from-inside-the-house, and a whole lotta Saw-style murder-escape-room shenanigans with Lucas. You’ve got some demonic possession, a creepy little girl, the list goes on – heck, I’m sure someone more familiar with slashers could list influences all day.
Tumblr media
But rather than continue in the same vein for RE8, instead we take a big leap sideways over into gothic horror – and here I am qualified to tell you all about the wildlife. You’ve got your isolated Romanian village with creepy castle, your vampires, your werewolves, and a huge extra helping of Frankenstein. Moreau alone is like a one-man monster mash: Igor and Frankenstein’s monster smushed into one, with a bit of Monster from the Black Lagoon for flavour, named in honour of The Island of Doctor Moreau, and even a bit of The Hunchback of Notre Dame too.
The Dimitrescu family is dense with the Dracula references: the writers cite the Order of Dracul (ie. Order of the Dragon) as inspiration for her mutated form, and the her daughters with their fly swarms ape Stoker’s descriptions of Dracula and his brides coalescing from mist beautifully (with just a little bit of Renfield thrown in for added squick). The whole game is saturated in twisted fairy tale vibes too (cackling old hags and all!) with a little steampunk, and then there’s that haunted house full of creepy dolls – the list goes on and on. It’s all glorious stuff.
Tumblr media
Which only raises the inevitable question: where could we possibly go from here? What other horror genres could work for Resident Evil, if (and this is admittedly a big if) the development team wants go for something as different again?
There’s no definitive horror-genre-list of we can refer to: categories overlap and bleed into each other at the best of times, and a google search for ‘horror genres’ doesn’t produce much consensus. A lot of ‘categories’ you will see listed are territory RE has already done to death: zombies are absolutely a valid genre, but is pretty much just another day at the office for RE. Psychological horror probably isn’t the kind of thing RE could hope to base a whole game around either: there are already psychological elements all through 7-8, but it’s more of a vibe than a real setting – and at some point in any RE, you’re going to expect to shoot something, or people won’t have got their money’s worth.
Lovecraftian horror may have more potential, but tends to come with more lore than will necessarily gel with the existing RE universe, and most other space or cosmic horror possibilities would run into similar problems. I mean, you certainly could tell us that the mould dates back to the Great Old Ones or that the progenitor virus actually came to earth on a meteor, but I’m not sure that’s the kind of ‘twist’ the series needs. Just because we want new territory doesn’t mean we’re ready to leave the planet.
That said, I do think there are places RE could go in the broader sci-fi horror genre, and that was when it hit me: imagine what Resident Evil could do with The Thing.
Tumblr media
No aliens needed: just a small group of besieged survivors after some outbreak or lab accident, dealing with the fact that one of them (if not MORE) isn’t entirely human anymore. Whether RE frames that as an infection, a shape-shifter, a mind-controlling parasite, a chest-burster, or some horrible combination of the lot, you’ve got the perfect recipe for confusion and paranoia: A+ horror material.
Obviously, you’re going to need something for players to shoot at between big reveals, so naturally your monster can bud, or infect corpses or lab animals or whatever – all very doable. Throw in some influences from the likes of Alien or The Blob (how much scarier would the monster be if it can crawl up through your sink?) or maybe even Venom for good measure. Think of the possibilities!
Now, obviously, the inevitable twist of this kind of set-up is that You Are The Monster (or at least, you are a monster) – and this is where the possibilities of doing You Are The Monster in a first-person perspective hit me, because damn. You thought seeing Ethan’s hands go through the blender was freaky? Imagine continually catching glimpses of your own hands transforming in tense moments, and not knowing if it was a hallucination. You Are The Monster with the ambiguity of first person perspective could be intense.
Tumblr media
Cliché as video-game-protag-with-monster-transformation can be, mostly it’s done as pure power-fantasy: rarely do we really get into the horror potential. Like the possibility of having control of your own player character wrenched away from you if the invisible-rage-meter gets too high, or of finding a body and having to wonder if the killer was you during a blackout period. If you can’t find a Resident Evil-worthy horror story in that, you’re not even trying.
I still don’t think RE needs actual aliens, or to send its next protag to explore a laboratory floating in orbit or anything, but taking some inspiration from the broader alien-horror genre could go some brilliant places.
Tumblr media
Is that likely to be where Capcom is going with the series? Not a clue! It’s all speculation down here. And if it was really up to me, RE9 would be the Mia Winters story, covering all the backstory we never got about her involvement with The Connections, and pushing on into post-Village territory too (look, they said Ethan’s story is over, they never told us they’re done with the rest of the family!) But I doubt I’ll get that lucky.
With all that Village draws from RE4, we should probably be happy if they can just avoid another follow-up like 5 or 6, which leans so heavily into action and chasing increasingly wider audiences that everything that ever gave the franchise its own identity gets lost in the shuffle.
But while I’m speculating, we may as well go over the actual hints the game leaves us about where things might be headed next.
The big sequel hook RE8 ends on is the implication that the BSAA (the big international org responsible for preventing bio-terror outbreaks) has itself been creating bioweapons. But as hooks go, this is a little underwhelming for a few reasons.
Tumblr media
For one, the BSAA exists in RE8 only as a sequel hook. That final scene where Chris is told the BSAA was sending bioweapons (!!!) comes virtually out of nowhere. The BSAA is mentioned in passing in one document you may well miss in the Winters’ home, and then not again until very near the end, when Chris watches a BSAA chopper crashing in the village. There were apparently plans for Chris’ section to involve a big three-way battle between his team, the lycans, and the BSAA, but in the final game, this has been cut all the way down the aforementioned cutscene, and to a single dead BSAA soldier you may not even find. Right up until that final ‘they’re making bioweapons!’ reveal, long-time fans are probably assuming Chris is still working for the BSAA himself. New fans probably haven’t caught on to who the BSAA are supposed to be at all.
Arguably, the implication that someone responsible for Ethan and Mia’s safety was working with Miranda all along is a lot stronger: someone tipped her off about Rose, and the couple weren’t moved right to Miranda’s doorstep by accident. That’s only reinforced by the game ending on Chris insisting ‘someone’s gotta pay’ (implied: for Ethan’s death). Trouble is, ‘the BSAA is working with Miranda’ really doesn’t tally with why they’d be sending choppers full of bio-engineered soldiers into the village at her moment of triumph. So is the problem that they’ve been working with her, or that they’re doing wildly unethical things while working against her? It’s all a bit incoherent.
Tumblr media
The other reason I find it a pretty weak sequel hook is that, well, that’s pretty much how RE7 ended too ‒ only there, the company-that-may-actually-be-dodgy was a new incarnation of Umbrella, not the BSAA. The choppers that swoop in at the end are Umbrella-branded, and Chris spends a lot of his DLC being suspicious that the folks funding the clean-up aren’t trustworthy. But nothing comes of it – and RE8 drops that plot point so hard that the new-blue-Umbrella isn’t even mentioned. Maybe we’re supposed to take it they were always working with the BSAA, but it feels more like we’ve retconned Umbrella out of ever being involved in the first place. There’s even a whole ‘Incident Report’ file you can get with one of RE8’s DLCs which mostly exists to cast the BSAA’s actions post RE7 in the worst light possible.
Now, there may be some narrative sense in corrupting the BSAA, at least in that it’s much easier to tell horror stories about characters who can’t just call in a reliable, well-funded, multi-national org for backup. And ‘the BSAA is making bioweapons!’ is admittedly a more shocking reveal than ‘Umbrella is making bioweapons!’ could be. Honestly, the more shocking reveal would be that new-blue-Umbrella aren’t secretly making bioweapons, with Chris having to team up with them to take down the evil!BSAA in RE9 – though I’m less sure how far the novelty would go in practice. But ultimately, if Capcom were so quick to drop the big ‘new Umbrella!’ teaser from the end of RE7, why should we have any more faith they’re going to follow up on the ‘evil BSAA!’ teaser from RE8? It’s just not that compelling as a hook.
Tumblr media
The Shadows of Rose DLC may or may not be any kind of clue. It tells us that Chris is still around and working with his dog-dog squad far into the future, and that people working with him are still researching the megamycete, but it seems more than likely RE9 won’t be set that many years ahead of the present day. Or maybe it wasn’t actually that far in the future at all, and Rose just ages supernaturally fast – I don’t think there’s a hard date on it, but no-one’s really expecting her to be the star of RE9, and I’d tend to agree.
For all that Chris ends RE8 promising “someone’s gotta pay!” I’d be amazed if he’s to be our next playable-protagonist either. There are plenty of other perspectives you could do that story from, even if he’s involved – and nothing about his post RE8 status quo suggests he’d work any better as a horror protag now than he did back in 5 and 6. Other old series regulars are likely to present similar problems.
Tumblr media
There are other dangling plot threads they could always pick up on, like the question of who Lucas Baker was selling research data to in that one RE7 DLC. You could dig into the truly ancient history of the mould and those four huge statues, as hinted in that one really old document lying in the stronghold, or dig even deeper into that whole consciousness-storing mechanic. Or we could just drop all that and ignore the mould altogether.
Anything’s possible – including a bland re-tread of Village that takes no interesting risks, or an epic game-changing masterpiece that I don’t ever play because it’s even less my thing than RE7 was. And just to emphasise, none of these possible dangling plot threads are inherently incompatible with leaping into wild, new horror territory: The Thing could come busting out of one of the BSAA’s own labs, if need be. It’s all about the angle.
But if I can say one thing for the current state of the series, it’s they’ve left me incredibly curious about where they might take things next. I don’t know we’ll get something as different from RE8 as it was as RE7, but I might be just a little disappointed if we don’t.

One with the Force in Jedi Fallen Order
At the start of October I decided I wanted to get the platinum trophy for the original Resident Evil 4. The original has a select few trophies that are mostly bosses and two collectables. I actually got tired of the game while playing through again for the professional difficulty which had to be unlocked with a first playthrough. So I moved on to Jedi Fallen Order.
I know I know, it's an EA game but much like other games I have, it was a gift so I'm playing it. Thankfully there's no microtransactions or $7 skin dlcs that are tied to trophies like another game I know that is surprisingly not an EA game.
I already played it through once a year ago so this time around I did a new game plus. Meaning everything I already unlocked was... already unlocked... so I didn't have to search for every single chest in the game.
Downside of that is that I still had to go to where those chests were in order to fully explore the map!
Majority of the maps were really easy. Dathomir, Ilum, and Bagono were very small so I basically completed those maps on my first visits. Kashyyk was on mega long linear level you had to travel to twice to complete. It ended up being the refinery that clocked me the most. Turned out those chests I had found in my first run a year ago came to bite my backside because, after searching up and down the entire map trying to figure out why it was stuck at 96% complete, it turned out the tiny spot with an already opened chest was what I needed to step on to complete the map.
But there was only one map I had to check google for, Zeffo. A twisted layered mess of a map that I back tracked up and down back and forth over and over again. Trying to fill up all databanks. Finding all echos. And double checking every chest even if it was already opened because Kashyyk taught me not to leave those chests alone.
Within the exploration, I unlocked basically all of the other trophies since gathering every collectable in the game checks off every corner of the map. That's all stim canisters, all lightsaber pieces, all ponchos, all BD-1 and Mantis paint jobs, all databank scans, and every plant seed for the terrarium.
Since I already had the story trophies, exploration took out almost all of them and I could take the platinum with ease...
Except, there was a total of two remaining. Unlocking all abilities and scanning all enemies.
After fighting enough bounty hunter encounters to be max level, I got ever ability and only had one enemy type to scan. Turns out it was the final boss of the game! I don't know if it's considered a spoiler due to the game having the sequel out and its been long enough for everyone who wanted to play the game already having played it.... I'm still not flat out tell y'all who it is, even if it's obvious.
Know that if you're missing one single dot on the tactical databank, it's most likely the final boss of the game.
And that was it!
Jedi Fallen Order was one of the most simplest games I completed but that was mostly due to everything being tied with exploring the maps. Think if everyone wanted to go for platinum with this game, they could achieve it rather quickly.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is Apple's Hottest New Phone (Literally)
Tumblr media
We suppose it's safe to say that no smartphone is perfect - a lot of devices out there will each have their own little quirks, whether it be via isolated cases or through serious manufacturing defects which might sometimes result in a recall. While the latter isn't probably the case with Apple's newest iPhone 15 series, it looks like a considerable number of users are having trouble with their devices nonetheless. More specifically, owners of the iPhone 15 Pro Max (the most expensive in Apple's 2023 lineup) have reported heating issues with their devices, so much so that we even tried checking out how hot our iPhone 15 Pro Max got. Folks have posted concerns on social media indicating that their iPhone 15 Pro Max units generated some rather-unwelcome heat during usage, which varied from user to user. If you clicked on the link to the video above, a quick test using a thermal scanner on our iPhone 15 Pro Max shows that the handset reached a high of 39 degrees celsius, which is pretty hot even for most phones. While most smartphones will generate heat from extended usage via gaming, data and GPS use, or maxed-out display brightness, most won't reach alarmingly-high temperatures. In order to mitigate issues like these, a lot of manufacturers have resorted to installing cooling systems on their devices. One good example is ASUS' ROG phone line, which features a "rapid-cycle vapor chamber design," which the company claims improves heat dissipation efficiency by up to 168%. There's even an optional attachment that clips on the ROG phone's rear panel, and acts as an external cooling fan. In the case of the iPhone 15 Pro Max however, it doesn't seem like Apple has installed an active cooling system of any sort on the phone, which has resulted in subsequent heating issues. Coupled with the more power-hungry A17 Pro Bionic chip, some users are now wary about using their iPhone for more intensive tasks and apps. Some are even comparing it to the A15 Bionic chip on the iPhone 13 series, which managed to balance performance and heat management during usage. There are suspicions that the A17 Pro Bionic might have been developed using a similar architecture as last year's A16 Bionic chip, which essentially meant that the A17's push for more power has affected the iPhone 15 Pro's overall thermal management capabilities. Prior to the launch of the 15 Pro, Google's Pixel 7 series have been noted for its heating issues as well, which many attribute to Google's Tensor G2 chip. This overheating has also resulted in users observing throttling on their devices, with temperatures reportedly reaching as high as 48 degrees celsius. Given Apple's big marketing push for the iPhone 15 Pro to double as a dedicated gaming device (with games such as Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake scheduled for release), this issue certainly warrants concern, and hopefully a fix from Apple is on the way, or in the works at the very least. Have you experienced heating issues with your new iPhone 15, or has your phone remained cool all throughout? Let us know in the comments below! Read the full article

Nintendo’s Game-Streaming Strategy Is Not Having One
Tumblr media
Via Megan Farokhmanesh @ The Verge:
Remedy Entertainment’s critically acclaimed supernatural thriller, Control, is arriving on the Switch, Nintendo announced during a Mini Direct presentation. Control Ultimate Edition — Cloud Version is available today. In order to play the game, you’ll need a Nintendo Account to access cloud service and “a persistent high-speed internet connection to play the game.” (It includes similar technology to Stadia and Luna, but Control’s cloud game will be handled by Ubitus.) Any interruption in the connection will cause it to disconnect in minutes. In order to buy the game, players will be required to use a launcher application to test that their connection can handle its requirements for five minutes. It will also require buying an Access Pass, priced at $39.99.
If you’d given me thirty minutes to guess what the most shocking announcement of today’s Nintendo Direct would be, I don’t think “Nintendo joins the game-streaming landscape by telling developers to just handle it themselves” would have been on my radar. I probably would have said “it’s finally Mother 3, but it’s a gacha game” or something equally dumb.
Anyway, as of today Control is on the Nintendo Switch. If you head into the eShop right now, you’ll see it’s available as a free download and requires an internet connection at all times because it’s been labeled as a “Cloud Version.” These Cloud Versions of games aren’t exactly new to the Nintendo Switch, as a few people on Twitter and Discord pointed out to me this morning, but they are new everywhere outside of Japan where Resident Evil 7, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Phantasy Star Online 2 have all been released using this technology. That said: Still a wild announcement!
On the surface — and assuming the tech works as advertised — releasing Cloud Versions of games that are too graphically intense to run on the Switch means more experiences available to more people, and that’s always going to be great. I downloaded and booted up Control’s cloud version in about three minutes and was presented with a fully playable rendition of the game, somehow complete with ray tracing — something not even my PlayStation 4 Pro can handle. Latency-wise, I didn’t notice any input lag whatsoever, but I would also categorize my internet as “above-average” so your mileage is absolutely going to vary.
So in the right conditions and given my extremely brief test, Cloud Versions seem to accomplish what they set out to accomplish, which is pretty outstanding given we don’t know a whole lot about how they even exist in the first place. One of the more interesting bits of information here is that the tech is being provided by a third party company called Ubitus, as noted in Farokhmanesh’s piece. While Microsoft continues to push xCloud and Google Stadia continues to… exist… and a multitude of other corporate entities compete to build out infrastructure capable of making game streaming The Next Thing, there’s something kind of refreshing about Nintendo’s “why don’t you do it yourself” mentality leading to a third party company like Ubitus just swooping in to make it happen. If there’s one thing we can all agree on regarding Nintendo’s ability to make coherent choices re: The Internet, it’s that their ability is frequently nonexistent. Saying “you do it” to publishers and developers when it comes to game streaming — something I’m sure Nintendo had no plans to build out themselves any time soon — almost feels like Nintendo agrees as well.
The thing I find most fascinating about game streaming to the Switch is how antithetical it feels to the way Nintendo markets the device itself. The Nintendo Switch is a home console you can take on the go! Games can be played on your TV or on the train! But not always? The more publishers decide to use companies like Ubitus to provide game streaming instead of building real ports, the more the eShop begins to flood with great looking games that can only be played at home. Yes, you can still swap between TV and handheld, but the actual freedom of the device’s portability fades away when a persistent internet connection is required.
To be clear, I don’t think this negatively impacts the Switch’s value as much as it broadens the capabilities of a console some believe to be hitting the end of its lifecycle (where’s that Switch Pro, Nintendo?). The Switch and Switch Lite were already my go-to options for anyone looking buy just one console, but now that cloud versions allow it to play games punching far beyond its graphical weight-class, the family of devices are inching ever closer to “no brainer recommendation” status to anyone with even a passing interest in video games as a whole.

The fantastic talented @damadisangue tagged me, so I give it a try! Here we go!
How many works do you have on AO3?
Only one on AO3 at the moment. The fic I am working on at the moment; RE: Umbrella Asylum.
I mainly post my fanfictions in my motherlanguage on the website Animexx. On both sites my username is MissZombieSlayer. Unfortunately it makes no sense to post something different than english works on AO3, but to write totally in english is to hard for me. It would sound terrible.
I would post more on AO3 in English, if I would have a good free translating App. Maybe someone does know one for me 😉
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 180,851 on Animexx
3. What fandoms do you write for?  Yeah Resident Evil is my fandom for big fanfictions because of a RPG I wrote when a was a teenager. Also Silent Hill. There is one i started but never finished. I guess like every ff author I have more unfinished works, than the amount online.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Lullaby For You - Wesker's Baby hast he most, than Umbrella Asylum and The Hand Has Come, Addicted and Born from a Wish got all the same number.
5. Do you respond to comments? If I would get some, OF FUCKING COURSE!!! Tumblr is a site not made for comments and AO3 also implies more to only smash the kudos button and not to write a comment. That is sad. Nowadays it is only about consumption and not interaction. I absolutely watch myself doing the same thing, because often I ask myself if the artists still want comments. Because some do not reply and it makes me think, that nowdays they do not want comments. But why should they not? I love love love interaction and comments! That what it’s all about.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I would say the never finished Silent Hill fanfiction. It would have been Silent Hill 6; written like a whole game. I mean it is Silen Hill; there are no Happy Endings.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
The End Has Come – One Shot. It is the Prolog for A Lullaby For You - Wesker's Baby. So what could be more Happy Ending? 😉
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Never did get any hate comment. Only a acquaintance oft the person I was writing the fic for said, that the character is OOC and the romantic is destroying the character. I get why he said it, I would have done the same, if I did not know the biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig backgroundstory that took place before the fanfiction. I mean it is one year of character development and it would have been more strange if the character would gave not evolved and act differently.
9. Do you write smut? Yes! I started it last year with the new RE fic. Before it was not explicit. Only lime. I want to write stupid stupid storyless smut. But I can’t bring myself to it. I need a story so the smut makes sense 🙈 I am annoying myself.
10. Do you write crossovers? Never have.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?  Haha no! Who would? Someone would have to read it first 😅
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?  I am working on it. I want to post my fics in english on tumblr and AO3. Need to find a program. I wish I could post my fanfiction simultaneously. But translating it section by section in Google, because it only allows a certain number of words, takes too long. I'd rather use the time to continue writing the fanfiction in my language.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?  No. But it would be fun. It’s like playing RPG right? I looooooved playing RPGs. I really would like to write a RPG again.
 14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? I could never ever decide for a ship I guess. But most of my fics are about Albert WeskerxHarleen Napier (OC from a RPG)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I really would have liked to finish my Silent Hill fanfiction. In my head everything was there. At the moment I really really really hope I finish the Umbrella Asylum fic. It is planed and everything ready in my head. But well, like all the other stuff, right? Because I want to start another Resident Evil RPG homage fanfiction.
16. What are your writing strengths? I question everything I write really really hard. But maybe inner thoughts?
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Getting to the point, being precisely. Because of too much inner thoughts 😅 The dialogue is miles away than. Not good. Working on it. Any advice?
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? No. But I think why not? Use your motherlanguage, sprinkle it in. Use what you have. I really really like to put english in the fics i my language, because we use it in daily life. But sometimes I ask myself i fit sounds stupid and i fit would be better to keept it clean. But the original figures like RE or BG3 talk english and that I want to use their pet name terms like ‚darling‘ and so on like in the original. It makes no sense to translate it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?  Resident Evil. No that is not right. I started a detective story before that old school on paper inspired by John Sinclair. Never finished. lol
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?  A Lullaby For You - Wesker's Baby because I wrote it for a very dear friend at wonderful time of my life. I would never ever miss this time. We loved the fandom and we loved the pairing. It made me so happy. And maybe it still makes me happy, that it brought me so much joy back than. That was once in a lifetime. Now I am very glad to work on Umbrella Asylum and I hope that I can improve my writing skills with it. Because with it I started in 2023 to write again over 10+ years.
I tag @nihil-ism aka @virologikal and @weskie
Maybe you are willing to share some thoughts and infos with us tumblr folks 🤗 Talking about interactions 😉
20 questions for fic writers Thank you, @thetentaclecommander ❤️ 1. How many works do you have on AO3? 153! 95 only in Resident Evil fandom. 2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 573,764 3. What fandoms do you write for? Mainly Resident Evil, but I write also for the Arcane, Game of Thrones, Batman and Assassin's Creed Syndicate (incest) fandom. 4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 1) The years we shared 2) Dirty little fairytale 3) Unravel me 4) Natural born sinner 5) All beauty destroyed 5. Do you respond to comments? Yes! Always! I always enjoy receiving them and being able to talk to people about the characters and their impressions of the plot. 6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? If I had to choose between those published I would say Forever is not for everyone, in which Alex suddenly dies before Albert and Wesker finds himself dealing with this sudden loneliness, as well as the hallucinations in which he sees his sister. 7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?  I wanna feel you from the inside, because Albert wins and both Weskers are alive and together. 8. Do you get hate on fics? Uhm, no, not really. There were those on Twitter who commented negatively saying that I wrote incest, so I sucked, but no big deal. 9. Do you write smut? Well, obviously yes. I believe it is a fundamental aspect of a relationship and a language through which the characters can express what words do not do. 10. Do you write crossovers? Nope! 11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?  Uhm, as far as I know, no. 12. Have you ever had a fic translated?  Yep! In Chinese and Russian! 13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?  No: I don't think I would do it well. 14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Albert and Alex Wesker. Definitely Albert and Alex. The obsession, the brutality, the blood, the incest, the mutual possession, the total and absolute control that Wesker wants to exercise, Alex's sadistic and violent streak, the fact that they are a wonderful tangle of feelings and teeth and that they bite into each other - and the ramifications that sex can take: violent, raw, brutal, or tremendously and painfully gentle, nostalgic, needy. And then Wesker infected with the Uroboros? It's clearly a wedding invitation for me. 15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? At the moment I would like to conclude a fantasy AU on Resident Evil, but it requires a very large narrative and contextualization effort - the nations, the houses, the monsters, the creatures: I'm a very precise and methodical person so it could take me a long time 16. What are your writing strengths? Uhm, I don't know... maybe the sex and the feelings? 17. What are your writing weaknesses? The description of the environments. I think it should improve. 18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Yes. I'm Italian, so I did that for Excella. 19. First fandom you wrote for?  Batman. A long time ago. 20. Favorite fic you’ve written?  One, not yet published - violent and with torture, but which deeply explores the Weskers and which I will publish hopefully by the summer - and Lamb of God, for the sex scenes and the relationship between Alex and Albert. I'm not sure who to tag, so anyone can use it freely! @judasiskariot @vesperene @tacky-tramp @junotranscends @omgbarbiegurl @doctor-hannibal-wesker @irithyll-writes @joanna-lannister

Astral Pt. 7 (Loki x Reader)
Ok so i lied Loki doesn’t come back yet, NEXT CHAPTER i promise XD I didn’t realize there was more I needed to write out, strengthening the relationship with the Avengers and such. We’re finally at the part where they reunite though AHH :) (i don’t think you guys understand I’m writing this and I’m getting just as excited as you all at Loki’s return!!! It’s taking everything in me to not post the next part already XD)
Tumblr media
It’s two years later, you’re 21, when you’re offered a spot on the Avengers. You accept right away only too sad you weren’t asked before the Chitauri invasion considering if you had been on the team you would have seen Loki in person.
You had been working over time on one of the command computers trying to run diagnostic on what was and wasn’t working in the system, what had been compromised when a brainwashed Clint had attacked. You had watched the CCTV cameras picking up on just who was attacking Earth. Of course with you having to work over time you didn’t get to visit the God in his temporary cell when he had been aboard the helicarrier. (The sight and knowledge of him being so close to you stole your breath and made your stomach flutter though) However, you thought on this and decided it was for the best you hadn’t seen him, considering he had been delirious for power and subjugation of the human race. You couldn’t help but doubt the invasion was all Loki because this didn’t seem like the Loki you knew. Loki was caring and that one time he even said you may have changed his mind on humans, even if it was ‘meagerly’.
Something in your gut told you he wasn’t of his own mind too but no one would listen to you. You had your proof though, his bright blue eyes told you. The Loki you had first met had lovely, hypnotizing green eyes. You regarded your proof as 100% foolproof when you got a close up of Clint and Dr. Selvig who also had bright blue eyes. You couldn’t outright tell Fury though because then you would have to explain where you knew the God from and, in turn, then explain where you got your magic from. Luckily Fury had been willing to let slide where you got your powers from when they brought you in on your 18th birthday. He had skirted around the question and when you didn’t give up anything he just outright asked you. You told him you’d prefer if you could keep this one secret, he could have anything else he wanted from you but that. Fury reluctantly yielded to your one demand and let it drop.
So, you may have slipped past Fury, making sure to touch him, on his way to speak to the Avengers after the invasion and planted a thought you knew would flourish in his mind. The thought that maybe Loki had been brainwashed too and flourish it did. Fury had told Thor that he would talk to the World Security Council about Loki. Fury then came to you and asked you to gather all possible evidence that Loki had been brainwashed then Thor would look over the information and videos to either confirm or deny if it was something he thought his brother would, or wouldn’t, do.
With you working missions with both Natasha and Clint you made a name for yourself, you were finally noticed by people. No one had given you a super hero name just yet but you vowed, in due time, you’d give them a reason to. Working with both Nat and Clint however did get you a seat on the Avengers. Natasha had written that you were dependable, adept, and a good team player. Clint had written that you adapted to situations with ease, stayed calm under pressure, and would trust his life in your hands.
So, you walked into your new room in Stark tower that Tony had all to happily given to you. You had an entire floor to yourself. You couldn’t even begin to fathom how much money Tony had in his bank account right now if this didn’t leave a dent in his pocket. You sighed and fell face first into your new bed, forgetting your two duffle bags at the door. You groaned in delight as you rolled on the bed.
A knock at your door had you snapping upright in embarrassment. You caught the smirk on Natasha’s lips before she glanced to her right and you saw Captain America, the Steve Rogers, standing in your doorway almost timidly. You smiled and made your way to them, holding a hand out to shake the Captain’s hand.
“Rogers, y/n, y/n, Rogers.” Natasha said.
You smiled shyly and then nodded behind them. “You both want to go to the living room, probably be more comfortable than here.”
“From the sounds you made, I think your bed is quite comfy but sure.” Natasha said making you flush again.
When all three of you settled in the living room you asked Steve the questions you had been dying to ask since he had awoken from his cryostasis.
“What’s a new food you like that wasn’t around back then?” You asked, relaxing your body into the couch and setting an arm on the top of the couch while the other hung loose on your lap. Natasha and Steve sat on a couch adjacent to you.
Steve pursed his lips and looked around the room in thought before you looked back at you and smiled. “Not a food per se but I didn’t realize there were so many ways to make coffee.”
You raised your brows and looked at Natasha with jealousy, “You took him to Starbucks and left me out?” Natasha gave you a smile like a cat that caught their mouse. Steve chuckled.
“It wasn’t anything too exciting you missed out on.” Steve said, smiling softly.
“Oh I don’t know, Steve, Your face got pretty red when the barista asked you what you wanted and you couldn’t give her an answer for 5 minutes.” Natasha said, bringing her legs up under her on the couch across from you. Steve sputtered. “You didn’t tell me there would be over 20 choices when I’ve only known of black coffee with sugar!”
You laughed with Natasha at an embarrassed Steve.
“So?” You asked Steve who looked at you confused, “What did you order and did you like it?”
Steve shook his head, smiling. “I ordered a white chocolate mocha frappuccino and it was amazing!”
“Steve has a major sweet tooth.” Natasha quipped. Steve knocked his knee into Natasha’s. Hmmm not an unwelcome development you smelled but kept your queries about their relationship to yourself.
“Has anyone shown you the internet yet?” You asked Steve.
“I know what Google is but that’s about it, haven’t really had the time to explore it more.”
As Steve said this an evil smirk grew on your lips, Natasha rolled her eyes at you but was smiling, Steve looked at you innocently.
Things were great for a few weeks, the world was moving past the alien invasion and rebuilding New York City. Any time the Avengers stepped out of the tower they were bombarded with questions. Questions about the invasion, questions on if there would be more attacks, questions about how come they could parade about with no legal repercussions. The last question made you sit on edge but no one on the team answered it so you let it die out.
Your days consisted of talking with the team (Bonding, as Steve liked to put it), embarrassing Steve, knocking Tony a few pegs down with your refined sarcasm, laughing with Clint and Natasha as you talked about old, botched missions. Even sparring together in an interactive training room Tony had made specific to each Avenger if you went in solo, and more general if you all trained as a team. The coolest thing about it was that the A.I. Tony imbedded in it would adapt to you so things never became too easy to handle.
Then Thor came back.
 Without Loki, of course.
Thor took to you like icing to cake. You spent the first few days finding each other’s boundaries in humor and physicality but once you both got comfortable you were inseparable. He was like a brother you wished you had. Then the week passed and he asked the question he had been sent to ask.
“Would it be alright if my brother, Loki, resided here until his banishment is revoked?”
You held your breath as the room tunneled and all you could see was Thor. Loki would be coming here. He would be within touching distance. What would you both say to each other? Would he even grace you with a look, let alone a conversation?
“Y/n?” Tony asked you, snapping you back to what was going on now, everyone had answered. Considering they knew Loki was brainwashed they all said yes, even Clint although his yes was a little strained.
“Yes.” You breathed out. Swallowing the lump in your throat at Thor’s smile.
“You will love my brother, y/n, he has just your kind of humor, perhaps he could further your training on magic!”
You forced out a laugh and smile.
“I bet he can, Big Guy.”

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #114
Brought to you by a marine biologist with some troubling news...
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
I’ve been waiting for the right animal to talk about ocean acidification, and I definitely found it with the Dungeness Crab. Although this is far from the only animal suffering as our planet’s build-up of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere heats and acidifies the oceans, it is the only ACNH animal with a dedicated study about the affects this is having on it. This is super important knowledge, because as much as you hear about climate change, you rarely ever hear about it’s just-as-evil twin, ocean acidification.

This one isn’t quite as rare as yesterday’s crab, but it *is* fairly rare regardless, so keep swimming around and you’ll find it. You have all winter and then the spring to find it, which goes along with its IRL range from Alaska down into Mexican waters. In fact, the crab is named after Dungeness, Washington where the fishery for the species started. Today, they are fished up and down the West Coast of North America and considered a delicacy in Canada and the USA. The scientific name is Metacarcinus magister :

Now, as I mentioned before, crabs, as well as all other crustaceans and arthropods, like insects, have an exoskeleton. This hard shell protects them from most predators, as do their claws. Arthropod exoskeletons, in particular, are made out of a substance called chitin, which includes the molecule calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to make it very tough. Of course, in order to make these hard shells, these animals need CaCO3 in their environment.
Now, welcome to my mini-Chemical Oceanography course! (If you wanna be a marine biologist? TAKE YOUR CHEMISTRY COURSES!!!) You can follow along with the diagram below. Now, then, in a normal, happy world, the oceans do absorb naturally-occurring carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, and it reacts with water (H2O) to make carbonic acid (H2CO3). Carbonic acid quickly breaks down (dissociates) into 2 free hydrogen ions (H+) and carbonate ions (CO3), the latter of which can then bind with calcium (Ca) to make the CaCO3 animals like crabs and corals need to build their shells. (This explanation is SUPER watered-down. If you want the heavy shit, look here.) However, the free hydrogen ions may also bind back onto the carbonate ions, making bicarbonate (HCO3). And in this happy world, there’s a happy medium where there are plenty of carbonate ions to go around for both processes, as seen on the left side of the diagram.
Unfortunately, we don’t live in a happy world, and as humans pump more CO2 into the atmosphere, the oceans absorb that much more of it (in fact, the oceans absorb half of the CO2 we pump out, as like the planet’s natural climate buffer, which is incredible and terrifying to think about if we didn’t have that sink, and that we are actually capable of fucking with a planet’s whole ass system by accident, but I digress!). Two things happen here: with increased CO2, there are more hydrogen ions (H+), which is what is steadily decreasing the pH of the oceans, which is the acidifying part of this story (if you remember from high school science, the pH scale tells us if a solution is acidic (pH 0-6) or alkaline (8-14), with pH 7 being neutral. The oceans are naturally at 8.2 but have dropped to 8.1, which is HUGE, don’t let the .1 drop fool you). The second thing is that with more hydrogen ions, we now get an imbalance in which more bicarbonate is produced in this reaction than the more useful calcium carbonate.

So, what does that mean? It means Dungeness crabs, as well as other calcified friends, like mollusks and corals, can’t make their shells and they die off. Especially for larvae trying to build their shells for the first time, mortality skyrockets and you just don’t get recruitment (aka, new babies into the population). (Here’s the scientific article and here’s the news story for you non-scientific folks because I realize the study’s title is like a full line of jargon.)
So, what does this really mean? Why should humans care? First of all, how dare. Second of all, anything that damages the environment to this scale, you should be concerned. As a species, we are so disconnected from nature, it’s insane, and yet we still really depend on it. Everything you own, everything you eat is produced “outdoors”; it’s taken from the Earth. Decreased populations of all kinds of crustaceans and other animals will definitely have a major impact on the livelihoods of the people who fish for them, the communities they support, and ultimately the economy of the country in which you live will take a hit. Especially at this scale, ocean acidification has the potential to wipe out already stressed coral reefs, a habitat in which 70% of ocean life resides or depends on. We haven’t even talked about what it does to fish - it’s equally terrifying, but beyond the scope of this article (please ASK ME if you wanna learn more, or there is always Google). If things get really bad, people who rely on the oceans as their main source of protein will starve and economies will collapse. Climate Change and Ocean Acidification are no joke, and in tandem they have the potential to make life very hard for humans. Life may find a way out of this, but we, as a species, are steadily making this place inhospitable to us.
Sorry to go doomsday on main, but this is a serious topic. If you learn nothing else from my fish posts, please just be aware of this. -___-
And there you have it. Fascinating stuff, no?

Happy 🐣Quarantine 😷 Easter  🐇

Beyond Ishtar: The Tradition of Eggs at Easter
Don’t believe every meme you encounter. Scientific American Krystal D’Costa
Eggs occupy a special status during Easter observances. They're symbols of rebirth and renewal—life bursts forth from this otherwise plain, inanimate object that gives no hint as to what it contains. In this regard it is a handy symbol for the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but it is is a symbol that has held this meaning long before Christianity adopted it.
There is a meme that some people have rallied around and shared as a "truth" of Easter. It proclaims:
Easter was originally the celebration of Ishtar, the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility and sex. Her symbols (like the egg and bunny) were and still are fertility and sex symbols (or did you actually think eggs and bunnies had anything to do with the resurrection?) After Constantine decided to Christianize the Empire, Easter was changed to represent Jesus. But at its roots, Easter (which is how you pronounce Ishtar) is all about celebrating fertility and sex.
Clearly, we all know that memes are the ultimate source of information—particularly when they makes a biting point about something or some group that is not particularly favorably viewed. But it is well known that under the Roman Empire, Christianity did indeed adopt the pagan rituals of conquered peoples in an effort to help convert them. It worked pretty well as a strategy as it allowed the conquered peoples to continue a semblance of their observances as they remembered, and with time the population would be replaced with those who only knew the new traditions. This is not a secret. However, there are a few things wrong with the Ishtar meme that a simple Google search will turn up:
Ishtar was the goddess of love and war and sex, as well as protection, fate, childbirth, marriage, and storms—there's some fertility in there, but as with Aphrodite, there is also an element of power. Her cult practiced sacred prostitution, where women waited at a temple and had sex with a stranger in exchange for a divine blessing (and money to feed hungry children or pay a debt).
Ishtar's symbols were the lion, the morning star, and eight or sixteen pointed stars—again, symbols of power.
The word Easter does not appear to be derived from Ishtar, but from the German Eostre, the goddess of the dawn—a bringer of light. English and German are in the minority of languages that use a form of the word Easter to mark the holiday. Elsewhere, the observance is framed in Latin pascha, which in turn is derived from the Hebrew pesach, meaning of or associated with Passover. Ishtar and Easter appear to be homophones: they may be pronounced similarly, but have different meanings.
Our helpful meme places the egg in Ishtar's domain, but Ishtar doesn't seem to be connected to eggs in any explicit way. However, there are plenty of other older traditions that involve the egg as a symbol of rebirth and feature it prominently in creation mythologies:
Ancient Egyptians believed in a primeval egg from which the sun god hatched. Alternatively, the sun was sometimes discussed as an egg itself, laid daily by the celestial goose, Seb, the god of the earth. The Phoenix is said to have emerged from this egg. The egg is also discussed in terms of a world egg, molded by Khnum from a lump of clay on his potter's wheel (1).
Hinduism makes a connection between the content of the egg and the structure of the universe: for example, the shell represents the heavens, the white the air, and the yolk the earth. The Chandogya Upanishads describes the act of creation in terms of the breaking of an egg:
The Sun is Brahma—this is the teaching. A further explanation thereof (is as follows). In the beginning this world was merely non-being. It was existent. It developed. It turned into an egg. It lay for the period of a year. It was split asunder. One of the two egg-shell parts became silver, one gold. That which was of silver is this earth. That which was of gold is the sky … Now what was born therefrom is yonder sun (1).
In the Zoroastrian religion, the creation myth tells of an ongoing struggle between the principles of good and evil. During a lengthy truce of several thousand years, evil hurls himself into an abyss and good lays an egg, which represents the universe with the earth suspended from the vault of the sky at the midway point between where good and evil reside. Evil pierces the egg and returns to earth, and the two forces continue their battle (2).
In Findland, Luonnotar, the Daughter of Nature floats on the waters of the sea, minding her own business when an eagle arrives, builds a nest on her knee, and lays several eggs. After a few days, the eggs begin to burn and Luonnotar jerks her knee away, causing the eggs to fall and break. The pieces form the world as we know it: the upper halves form the skies, the lower the earth, the yolks become the sun, and the whites become the moon (3).
In China, there are several legends that hold a cosmic egg at their center, including the idea that the first being or certain people were born of eggs. For example, the Palangs trace their ancestry to a Naga princess who laid three eggs, and the Chin will not kill the king crow because it laid the original Chin egg from which they emerged (3).
The Sun God, Ra with an egg-shaped disk over his head. Public domain. These are some of the stories that build the foundation for the tradition of eggs at Easter. Contrary to the assertion of our meme, eggs and bunnies actually do have something to do with the idea of resurrection: in these early stories, the creator often emerged from the egg itself in some form:  The cosmic egg, according to the Vedic writings, has a spirit living within it which will be born, die, and be born yet again. Certain versions of the complicated Hindu mythology describe Prajapati as forming the egg and then appearing out of it himself. Brahma does likewise, and we find parallels in the ancient legends of Thoth and Ra. Egyptian pictures of Osiris, the resurrected corn god, show him returning to life once again rising up from the shell of a broken egg. The ancient legend of the Phoenix is similar. This beautiful mythical bird was said to live for hundreds of years. When its full span of life was completed it died in flames, rising again in a new form from the egg it had laid (4).
The Phoenix was adopted as a Christian symbol in the first century AD. It appears on funeral stones in early Christian art, churches, religious paintings, and stonework. The egg from which it rose has become our Easter egg. As with many symbols, the Easter egg has continued to shift. When the Lenten fast was adopted in the third and fourth centuries, observant Christians abstained from dairy products, including milk, cheese, butter, and eggs. In England, on the Saturday before Lent, it was common practice for children to go from door to door to beg for eggs—a last treat before the fast began.
Even the act of coloring eggs is tied to the idea of rebirth and resurrection. While egg decorating kits offer a vibrant means of decorating eggs today, the link between life and eggs was traditionally made by using a red coloring. Among Christians, red symbolizes the blood of Jesus. Among Macedonians, it has been a tradition to bring a red egg to Church and eat it when the priest proclaims "Christ is risen" at the Easter vigil and the Lenten fast is officially broken (5).
I love the Easter traditions at Church. The lighting of the Easter candle reminds me of my childhood Diwali celebrations and the lighting of Christmas lights as they all represent means of driving away darkness. Ishtar may well have some connection to the rites of Spring, and admittedly Easter itself is an observance of Spring, but in an age when so much wrong has been done in the name of religion, and religion is a focal point for criticism and debate, it's worth remembering that the overlap of time and history has given us richer traditions than any of us can truly be aware of—and that memes shouldn't be taken at face value.
