Any tips for new grad students? I'm about to start in the fall and I'm curious how it'll be different/hopefully better than undergrad!
Congratulations, anon!!!
Let's see... some alphabetical tips based on my own experience:
Ask for help. You'll likely have a million questions and, unfortunately, the designated people who can answer them are often crazy busy and may take a while to get back to you, or forget entirely. So don't be afraid to ask for help from whoever might even feasibly know the answer -- including tumblr blogs! You're off to a great start lol
Be on the lookout for advisors early. Whether you're just in need of a singular advisory for a thesis, or if you'll be putting a whole committee together, approach every new instructor with the question, "Would I want them to mentor me through my research?" in the back of your mind. Pay attention to not just their specialties and teaching methods, but who they are as a person. Do you like them? Are you comfortable with them? Do they treat you respectfully? Do they seem to have everything well in hand? I loved my advisor dearly as a person, but he was often waaaaaay behind on his work. Looking back, I would have at least considered choosing someone with better organization/time management skills.
Get good at writing emails. Can you write a succinct, professional sounding email? Great! Get comfortable doing that throughout the whole day. Feeling a little iffy? Practice over the summer. There are a lot of templates online that can help, but you'll want to ensure you're not going into grad school still writing "k thx" from your iPhone at 3:00am. (For the record, your professors may do this, the students should not lol).
Have designated, scheduled downtime. Literally if you don't plan to take a break... you won't be taking a break. Not until your body decides to take one for you, anyway. Friday nights were always my couch potato time. Absolutely no work allowed and no strenuous activity unless it was something I was legitimately excited about (so no getting pressured into outings I didn't actually want to attend). Friday nights were sacred, a time for takeout and only whatever else I felt like doing, usually TV, video games, and vegging out with my cat.
Imposter Syndrome is a BITCH. Luckily, pretty much everyone's got it to a greater or lesser extent, we all just need to acknowledge it more. You know those boards some schools have celebrating places where students have gotten in and other achievements? Yeah, we put one up for failures in our department. Literally a giant, glittery, "CONGRATS YOU DIDN'T GET IT!" board where we hung proposal rejections, grant rejections, school rejections, scholarship rejections, job rejections, and on one memorable occasion a date rejection. I highly recommend it. Nothing lessens the sting quite as much as seeing that you're a part of a sea of similar disappointments and remembering that you're all in the same, often luck-based boat.
Pick a non-academic hobby. Your mental health will thank you, trust me. Like the designated downtime, you need to be doing something that's not reading/writing/researching 24/7. Pick a hobby that in no way relates to academics or your chosen field, preferably something hands-on and creative. Grad school is when I picked up crocheting alongside knitting.
Prepare to hold down two jobs. This really only applies if you're going to be teaching while you get your degree (or if you have an outside job for the paycheck), but I was pretty blindsided by what it took to be a full-time student and a half-time instructor. I don't really have good advice beyond "Figure out your time management skills now" and "Don't pour all your energy into one or the other because the one you've neglected WILL come back to bite you in the ass," but even just being aware of how difficult it is going to be would have staved off the initial shock.
Read strategically. Perhaps this is different for someone not in the Humanities, but you will be reading a LOT in grad school. Like, an absolutely stupid amount. There simply will not be time to cover everything from title to footnotes (I know, it hurts), so get comfortable with reading abstracts, chapter summaries, skimming, and otherwise summarizing lengthy works to figure out what you should prioritize. Unless a whole article is assigned for class, figure out what you need from any given text -- or what you think you may need -- and hone in on that. You can always return to read more if you have the time.
SAVE EVERYTHING. Do not delete emails. Get copies of everything even remotely official. Print everything out. Buy yourself a couple of cheap file boxes, stick them under your bed, and keep it all just in case. What kind of things have I unexpectedly needed to dredge up weeks, months, or even years later? The printed paper with hand-written comments to justify a grade I gave. An ancient email from a committee member proving that they did in fact sign off on a certain chapter choice. A copy of the publication forms I signed for a book collection after those got lost on their end (somehow). Seriously, save everything. You'll never know when you may need proof of some communication you've had.
Take naps. That's it. That's the advice. Someone gives you shit for being "lazy" or tries to make you feel bad for "wasting" a sunny afternoon? Make them step on a Lego and then both of you take your nap outside. Naps are beautiful and sacred and life-saving. Just set a good alarm for whenever your next class/meeting is.
Work at making friends. Unlike high school or even college where you'll be spending the day with a core group of people, in graduate school (unless your school is really small) the students are a lot more spread out and there aren't as many built-in opportunities to socialize. So plan to put in more effort at connecting with others because you will want that camaraderie, both for practical help and your sanity. I didn't realize how much more I needed to do to get to know my peers until I was nearly finished my Master's. Luckily, my PhD threw me into an office with seven other grads, so I didn't have a choice about getting to know them lol
You're responsible for your own learning. You've gotten a taste of this in college, but grad school cranks it up to 11. You're an adult (not an "adult" adult like a college student) and you've committed to putting forth 2-7 additional years towards your education. The expectation is that you want to be here and will showcase the necessary effort without outside influence (unless you require accommodations, of course). Be prepared for your instructors to treat you like a peer, both when it comes to the fun stuff - intense debates about your field! - and the responsibilities they expect you to follow through on. In some ways grad school is nothing like college because you are now focused on one subject, you are working collaboratively with people who were once solely authority figures, and 95% of the work will occur outside the classroom via self-teaching. You're a professional now. Still being mentored, but well on your way to that equal standing. The sooner you realize that you are responsible for your own education and future career -- not your teachers, your parents, your BFF, your roommate, etc. -- the better.

Safety Warnings Issued for LGBTQ+ Travelers Ahead of Pride Month
Tumblr media
With Pride month just around the corner, the U.S. State Department has issued a "Worldwide Caution" advisory for LGBTQ+ travelers. The warning highlights potential safety risks linked to attending Pride events and visiting LGBTQ+ venues internationally. This comes amid growing global tensions and increasing concerns about the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals.
The advisory encourages LGBTQ+ travelers to stay vigilant and exercise extra caution while traveling abroad. While many international destinations are welcoming, some countries have laws or cultural norms that can pose serious dangers to LGBTQ+ people.
The State Department’s advisory outlines several key points:
Legal Risks: LGBTQ+ travelers should research and understand the legal status of LGBTQ+ rights in their destinations. In some places, same-sex relationships are still illegal, and public displays of affection can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment.
Cultural Sensitivity: Even in countries where LGBTQ+ rights are legally recognized, cultural attitudes vary widely. Travelers should be mindful of local customs and societal norms to avoid unwanted attention.
Heightened Threats: There’s been an increase in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and actions globally, including targeted attacks and discrimination. Travelers are urged to stay updated on current events and follow any additional warnings from local authorities.
In addition to the State Department's caution, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued a joint public service announcement for domestic travel. It, too, comes at a time of growing concern over the safety of LGBTQ+ events within the United States, emphasizing the possibility of targeted violence at Pride events and LGBTQ+ spaces.
The agencies warn that Foreign Terrorist Organizations' efforts to commit or inspire violence against holiday celebrations, including Pride celebrations or LGBTQ+ venues, are compounded by the current heightened threat environment in the United States and other Western countries.
The PSA also noted that June 2024 will be the eighth anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub Orlando shooting, during which the attacker killed 49 and wounded 53 people.
Resources for LGBTQ+ Travelers
If you're planning to travel, whether internationally or domestically, several resources can help you evaluate the safety and inclusivity of various destinations:
Spartacus Gay Travel Index: This index provides detailed information on LGBTQ+ rights and social acceptance in over 200 countries and regions. It ranks destinations based on criteria like anti-discrimination laws, marriage equality, and social acceptance.
Movement Advancement Project (MAP): MAP offers detailed reports and interactive maps outlining the legal landscape for LGBTQ+ individuals across the United States. It covers issues ranging from employment protections to healthcare access, helping travelers understand the varying levels of LGBTQ+ rights and protections in different states and cities.
ILGA World: The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association provides reports on the legal status of LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide. Their annual "State-Sponsored Homophobia" report is especially useful for identifying countries with hostile legal frameworks.
Equaldex: This collaborative platform tracks LGBTQ+ laws and rights globally, offering real-time updates and community-sourced information.
U.S. State Department's LGBTQI+ Travel Information: The State Department's website provides specific travel advice and resources for LGBTQ+ travelers, including country-specific information and safety tips.
LGBTQ+ travelers are also encouraged to connect with local LGBTQ+ organizations and communities in their destination cities. This can offer firsthand insights into the local climate, recommend safe spaces, and provide support networks. Engaging with these communities not only enhances personal safety but also enriches the travel experience by fostering connections and understanding.

Now Harvard DEI Chief Accused of Plagiarism
In case anyone thought plagiarist, former Harvard President, and ludicrous moonbat Claudine Gay was an exception to the rule, it appears Harvard’s chief diversity and inclusion officer is also a plagiarist:
Sherri Ann Charleston, appears to have plagiarized extensively in her academic work, lifting large portions of text without quotation marks and even taking credit for a study done by another scholar—her own husband—according to a complaint filed with the university on Monday and a Washington Free Beacon analysis. The complaint makes 40 allegations of plagiarism that span the entirety of Charleston’s thin publication record.
You can’t expect better than Claudine Gay with Affirmative Action hires in charge of hiring:
Charleston was the chief affirmative action officer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before she joined Harvard in August 2020 as its first-ever chief diversity officer. In that capacity, Charleston served on the staff advisory committee that helped guide the university’s presidential search process that resulted in the selection of former Harvard president Claudine Gay in December 2022, according to the Harvard Crimson.
Head of the National Association of Scholars Peter Wood characterizes Charleston’s scholarship as “research fraud pure and simple.” But you can’t say she hasn’t been doing her job, which is to institutionalize hatred of whites:
Since 2020, her office has pumped out a stream of materials that bemoan the “weaponization of whiteness,” discuss the ins and outs of “white fragility,” and urge students to “call out” their peers for “harmful words.”
“Harmful words” can be presumed to mean speech that does not comply with leftist doctrine grounded in DEI and Critical Race Theory.
Harvard’s commitment to this toxic dogma at the expense of integrity and competence is producing consequences:
The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, one of Harvard Medical School’s three teaching hospitals, announced in January that it would retract six papers and correct dozens more after some of its top executives were accused of data manipulation. That news came on the heels of a viral essay in which Carole Hooven, a Harvard biologist, described how she had been hounded out of a teaching role by her department’s diversity committee after she said in an interview that there are only two sexes.
Serious medical research cannot be conducted where facts are forbidden in the name of politics.
The school is also facing an ongoing congressional probe over its handling of anti-Semitism and its response to the plagiarism allegations against Gay, which Harvard initially sought to suppress with legal saber-rattling.
Harvard has an endowment of $51 billion, but its most valuable asset has been its reputation for excellence. This reputation has been exchanged for laughing stock status in the name of moonbattery.
On tips from Ed McAninch, Steve D, and Mr. Freemarket.

At 60 years old I decided to get a degree. I never finished high school and getting a formal education was always on my bucket list. After helping all four of my kids get their BAs it seemed only fair that I get one of my own.
I was surprised to find that African Americans had their own separate degree plan within the UT university structure. They had separate study areas, separate dining rooms, separate fraternal organizations and degree requirements custom made to insure they passed all their core requirements with a 3.7 average. there was a list of professors guaranteed to pass them with a 3.7 average for doing virtually no written course work. All they had to do was show up for 50 percent of the lecture. If you check "Rate My Professor" on the internet you will see that there are buzz words used to let a potential student know how little would get them a passing grade.
In the case of these professors simply ask yourself how they would have been treated had they been white or Asian? They would have been relieved of their duties and sent packing. No doubt about it. There were of course exceptions but the system was designed to grease the skids for minority students.

The first weekend that the 150 members of the French convention met in October 2019, Burquier experienced what he and other members came to call “la claque,” or “the shock.” The members had gathered in a tiered, wood-paneled amphitheater of the French Economic, Social, and Environmental Council building, the Paris home of France’s third (and purely advisory) house of parliament. It was designed to look and feel grandiose: Microphones lined the semicircular room, and cameramen and journalists hovered in the background. The citizens, sitting in plush red chairs with briefing papers and notebooks spread out before them, looked for all the world like lawmakers.
The convention proceeded in two parts. For the first several sessions, the assembled citizens learned about climate change and proposed solutions; in the final months, they deliberated and prepared their recommendations. In the amphitheater of the council building, or in its more airy, columned atrium, participants listened to scientists, policy experts, and diplomats explain the dangers of greenhouse gases and how they touched every component of modern life. They were then split into five groups, each focused on a subject — consumption, travel, housing, production and work, and food — and tasked with coming up with recommendations that would help France cut its carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
As scientists and other experts began to describe the crisis of climate change, Burquier said the assembly was struck by the enormity of the problem — and the enormity of what they were being asked to do. “They said, ‘Now it’s your job to propose solutions,’” he said. “It felt like a very big hole that we had to fill.” France, he noted, is a country of 67 million people; each member of the convention was effectively being asked to represent 450,000 other citizens.
The assembly was expected to be confined to eight weekends, but the deliberations soon took over participants’ lives. On Friday and Saturday evenings, they would congregate at a nearby hotel — where those from outside Paris stayed during the convention — or at restaurants, drinking beers and discussing what they had learned away from the prying eyes of journalists and researchers.
Amandine Roggeman, a 27-year-old Parisian who works in fundraising at the Palace of Versailles, told me that she and many other convention members began to do their own reading during the week, stealing time after work. “The normal weekend sessions,” she said, “were just the tip of the iceberg.” After COVID-19 forced a meeting online, they started congregating over Zoom during the week, sometimes from 6 to 9 p.m. (For their nine months of effort, each participant was paid 1,462 euros, or $1,695.)
Despite the contentiousness of the issues, members of the assembly insist that disagreements were minimal. Faced with the stark 2030 goal, Roggeman said, “You feel like you don’t have time to argue.” Her group, which focused on consumption, sometimes sparred over the importance of buying local (low-carbon, but too expensive for many poor, rural members of the convention). Once COVID-19 struck, they haggled over whether the convention would go fully remote or remain in-person. Most of the issues were resolved through careful conversation, thanks to trained political mediators who were hired for the occasion to help ensure that everyone received roughly equal time to speak and that discussions didn’t devolve into infighting. “Those people were essential,” Roggeman told me. “They were the ones putting oil in the machine.”

Top Tips for Choosing the Best Insurance Advisor in Vancouver for Your Needs
Tumblr media
Choosing the right insurance advisor can make a significant difference in safeguarding your financial well-being and future plans. Whether you need personal coverage or protection for your business, having a trusted advisor ensures you make informed decisions. Here are some practical tips to help you find the best insurance advisor in Vancouver for your unique needs.
1. Assess Your Insurance Needs
Before you start your search, identify the type of insurance coverage you require. Do you need life, health, auto, home, or business insurance? Understanding your needs will guide you in finding an advisor with the right expertise. Some advisors specialize in specific areas, so knowing what you need narrows down your choices efficiently.
2. Look for Relevant Experience and Credentials
Experience matters when it comes to insurance advisory services. Advisors with extensive industry knowledge and proper certifications, such as Certified Insurance Professional (CIP) designations, demonstrate competence. Additionally, check if they are registered with provincial or national regulatory bodies to ensure they adhere to industry standards.
3. Evaluate Communication Skills and Transparency
An effective insurance advisor will not only provide recommendations but also explain policies clearly. Look for someone who communicates openly, listens carefully to your concerns, and offers honest advice. Transparency about premiums, policy exclusions, and benefits is essential to avoid any surprises down the road.
4. Research Client Reviews and Testimonials
Client reviews can offer valuable insights into the advisor’s track record. Look for testimonials that highlight their reliability, prompt responses, and ability to tailor insurance solutions to different needs. Positive reviews indicate that the advisor is well-regarded and has a history of delivering excellent customer service.
5. Compare Services and Costs
It’s crucial to evaluate multiple advisors before making a final decision. Compare the range of services they offer, the types of insurance companies they work with, and the fees associated with their advisory services. This will help you find an advisor who offers the best combination of value and expertise.
6. Ensure Long-Term Support
Insurance needs can change over time due to life events or business growth. Choose an advisor committed to providing long-term support, reviewing your policies regularly, and suggesting adjustments as needed. Having a long-term relationship with an advisor ensures that you always stay protected, even as circumstances evolve.

Life After the PhD: Turning Your Thesis into a Career Introduction
Earning a PhD is no small feat. It represents years of rigorous study, research, and personal growth. But once you’ve defended your thesis and donned your graduation robes, the question looms: What’s next? Whether your sights are set on academia, industry, or entrepreneurship, your PhD is a powerful launchpad for a fulfilling career. This blog will look into how you can make your thesis work life for you, navigate the transition from student to professional, and reveal what no one else has: your unique expertise.
Publishing Your Thesis The publication of your thesis is the most direct method to publish your work and express your expertise; on top of that, it develops your CV for academic and non-academic purposes.
Turning Your Thesis into Journal Articles:
Identify which parts or chapters of your thesis could stand alone as independent papers. Find journals relevant to your field and that match your research's scope. Get advice during submission from mentors or co-authors. Publishing a Book:
Some theses, especially those in the humanities and social sciences, can be expanded and developed into a book. Work with academic publishers to refine your manuscript for broader audiences. Understanding Copyright and Open Access
Ensure you maintain your rights on work by reading publisher agreements. Publish in open-access journals to make your research more accessible and widely read. Pro Tip: Attend academic writing for publication workshops to better streamline the process and maximize impact.
Preparation for Academia If you are planning to continue along the same path, then you are likely building up your portfolio and working through a competitive job market. Postdoctoral Fellowships:
A postdoc is often the first step after your PhD. These roles provide an opportunity to deepen your research expertise, publish extensively, and expand your network. Apply early, focusing on institutions and projects that align with your research interests. Teaching Roles:
Gain teaching experience during your PhD to build a strong teaching dossier. Pursue adjunct or lecturer positions while working on your research output. Tenure-Track Positions:
These roles combine teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities. Network at conferences, seek mentorship from senior academics, and prepare a robust application highlighting your research impact. Key Skills: Time management, grant writing, and collaboration are critical for academic success.
Exploring Non-Academic Careers Not all PhD graduates pursue academic careers—and that’s perfectly fine! The skills you’ve developed are highly valuable in various industries.
Consulting and Advisory Roles:
Use your expertise to advise businesses, governments, or NGOs. Especially, the Ph.D. is highly in demand in the field of management consulting, policy-making, and think tanks. Tech and Data Science Careers: If you have a background in coding, statistics, or machine learning, transition into data scientist, research analyst, or AI specialist, among others. Companies look for more problem-solving skills and an analytical mindset in PhDs. Entrepreneurship:
Consider commercializing your research or starting a business. Many universities have startup incubators or funding programs to help graduates translate ideas into market realities. Transferable Skills of Your PhD: Critical thinking, project management, communication, and complex problem analysis skills.
Best Use of Professional Networks Your network is your most valuable asset in the post-PhD world. Cultivating relationships can open doors to collaborations, job opportunities, and mentorship.
Online Presence:
Showcase your research, skills, and achievements on LinkedIn. Share your blog posts or insights from your thesis to establish yourself as an expert. Engage with the Alumni Networks:
Reach out to alumni from your university or program who are working in roles that you aspire to. Seek informational interviews about their career paths, and seek their advice. Attend Conferences and Networking Events:
Present your work at industry or academic conferences. Join a panel, workshop, or a social gathering to connect with potential collaborators. Professional Organizations:
Be a part of associations related to your field of work to enjoy exclusive access to some job boards, funding opportunities, and events. Pro Tip: Two-way street networking; give a little by sharing knowledge or helping others with their professional goals.
Conclusion A PhD is much more than an academic degree, representing a testament to your commitment, intellectual curiosity, and resilience. More importantly, this knowledge sets you on the path toward a good career, whether that be in academia, industry, or some other alternative.
Main Guidelines to Success: Act proactively by publishing your thesis, diving into new industries, and meaningful relationships. With effective strategy, the end is the start of the beginning of unlimited possibilities with your PhD journey right after the successful thesis defense.  Traveling is one of life’s most enriching experiences, offering the chance to explore new cultures, meet diverse people, and create lasting memories. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a globe-trotting adventure, following a few practical tips can make your journey smooth and enjoyable. Here’s a comprehensive guide with some of the best tips travel to help you prepare for your next trip.
1. Plan Ahead but Stay Flexible
One of the best tips when travelling is to plan your itinerary in advance. Research your destination, book accommodations, and check for any seasonal events or festivals. However, flexibility is key—unexpected delays or opportunities can arise, so leave room for spontaneity.
2. Pack Light and Smart
Packing efficiently is a top tip for traveling. Choose versatile clothing that can be layered, and stick to the essentials to avoid overpacking. A lightweight, carry-on bag saves time at airports and reduces the risk of lost luggage. Don’t forget to pack a small travel first-aid kit and a reusable water bottle.
3. Keep Your Documents Organized
When it comes to tips of travelling, having your travel documents in order is non-negotiable. Keep your passport, tickets, insurance, and itinerary in a travel wallet. Take photos or digital copies of important documents in case of emergencies.
4. Stay Safe and Informed
Before traveling, check government travel advisories and local safety information. A vital tip on travelling is to avoid overly crowded areas and to remain vigilant about your belongings. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind for unforeseen situations like medical emergencies or lost valuables.
5. Embrace Local Culture
Immerse yourself in the local culture by trying traditional food, learning basic phrases in the local language, and respecting customs. One of the most rewarding tips when travelling is to step out of your comfort zone and engage with locals. This not only enhances your experience but also fosters meaningful connections.
6. Use Technology Wisely
Smartphones can be your best travel companion. Download apps for maps, translations, and travel guides. A tip for traveling smartly is to invest in a portable charger so you’re always powered up. Remember to back up your photos regularly to avoid losing precious memories.
7. Manage Your Budget
Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive. Research free or low-cost activities, dine at local eateries instead of tourist hotspots, and use public transport. Following these tips on travelling can help you stick to your budget without compromising on experiences.
8. Stay Healthy
Jet lag and unfamiliar environments can take a toll on your body. Stay hydrated, get adequate sleep, and eat well. A tip for traveling safely during the pandemic is to carry masks, hand sanitizers, and adhere to local health guidelines.
9. Respect the Environment
Sustainable travel is more important than ever. Use refillable bottles to reduce plastic waste, stick to marked trails when exploring nature, and support eco-friendly businesses. Practicing these tips on travelling helps protect the planet while you enjoy its beauty.
10. Reflect and Share
After your trip, take time to reflect on your journey. Sharing your experiences, photos, and travel tips with others can inspire future adventures and deepen your appreciation for the world.
Final Thoughts
