Reposting, on my watch? Well Maybe

Reposting art is always a very very touchy subject. Nobody is really sure where to stand on it. Is it okay, or is it forbidden? Will the artist be upset or not? How will we know what can be reposted and what can’t if the artist doesn’t clarify?

People are always unsure on how to avoid getting their accounts taken down or avoid stealing artwork. The solution to it all is so simple, that you’d think there wouldn't be an issue at all. It would seem obvious enough to most that to ask permission from the artist themselves would be the most courteous approach, but not everyone seems to think that. There are entire accounts dedicated to the reposting of art, some who do it much more professionally than others. In some cases, accounts will simply post artwork online with no credits, and in their bio note in that none of the art is theirs. Where is the credit to the artist? Who made it? Why was it posted in the first place? Doing something like this is incredibly dangerous for the artist’s career. Some illustration companies will reverse image search and discover that the work of the artist has already been posted online on a different account. Regardless of the overwhelming evidence that suggests who the art belongs to, the company won’t hire them. They lose such great opportunities because of unauthorized reposting. Posting artwork without a name to it holds no merit. It doesn't advertise the art, and it brings no traffic to the artist. It only sits there to be admired by those who follow the account, taking away attention from the true artist.

Now that doesn't mean reposting is all bad. Some people have a bit more respect when it comes to reposting. They DM the artist to ask permission to repost, and then leave full credits, advertising the art for a wider audience. This brings attention to the artist, giving them a larger following, and more income through supporters and sales. Well, what if an artist doesn't allow the reposting of their work but you really want to share their art? Then the answer is stuoid simple. You don’t. It's easy, just don’t. If you don't know why the artist is against it don't assume things will go well for them if you start reposting their work without their consent. It can do so much more harm than you think, and doesn't really help anyone. The action of doing so is thievery, and has severe consequences for some of the artists. So many other artists online allow the reposting of their work, so it makes no sense to target one specific person who isn’t okay with it and doing what the explicitly asked their audience not to do.

Always contact the artist no matter what. No ifs or buts. There are such few exceptions to that rule. If you can find an excuse that makes it all okay I’d sure love to hear it, because quite frankly nothing can excuse the stealing of another person's work.
