Choosing the Right Grey Paint Color for Kitchen Cabinets
There are many shades of grey paint that can be used for kitchen cabinetry. This means that there is a shade to suit every kitchen style. Here are some tips for choosing the right gray color for your cabinets. Choosing the right color for your cabinets will make your kitchen look more spacious and inviting. However, you must consider your budget and the style of your home.
Dove gray
If you’re ready to update your kitchen, you’ll love a look with dove gray cabinets. This color is on the lighter end of the gray spectrum and pairs well with both light and dark colors. Its calming, transitional vibe will be perfect for your kitchen. Plus, you can pair it with colorful appliances and complex backsplash tiles. This soft shade also looks elegant with wooden or marble countertops. Silver hardware is also a great option for this neutral color.
This kitchen’s gray shaker cabinets are accented by three stools in dove gray. An island sink is fitted with a polished nickel faucet. A marble countertop provides additional visual interest, while two-toned gray grid floor tiles complement the dove gray cabinets with brass pulls. A white marble countertop and curved marble countertop complete the look.
When it comes to choosing a gray kitchen cabinet color, you must consider your preferences and the size of your kitchen. If you have a small kitchen, a dark color will make the space seem cramped. Light-colored cabinets, on the other hand, reflect light and make the space feel larger and brighter.
Choosing the right color for a room is a tricky task. There are countless factors to consider, including functionality and style. Luckily, gray is a great choice for the kitchen because it can work in almost any setting. This neutral color allows you to play with many accent colors and textures, and let the balance take center stage.
Grey is a popular color for kitchen cabinets. The color has a warm and a cool undertone, which makes it a great choice for any kitchen. This versatile color can be mixed with different types of countertops, such as butcher block or laminate. You can even go with different colors on the backsplash and countertop.
Gauntlet gray
The owner of this kitchen wanted to add a color accent to the island, and she chose Sherwin Williams’ Gauntlet Gray to create a cohesive look. This neutral tone matches her granite counters, floors, and soft furnishings. Sherwin Williams offers a free, 10-second online estimate for painting your cabinets.
This gray color has warm undertones that are not as harsh as other neutrals. It has a slight green undertone, but it’s not noticeable enough to overpower the overall color scheme. As a neutral color, Gauntlet Gray looks good in almost any kitchen, and it’s a great choice for kitchen cabinetry and trim. It also works well with white or cream countertops. Here are a few things to consider when choosing this color.
Shaker cinder
The Shaker Cinder kitchen cabinet 10×10 collection from Wilora features solid birch construction, recessed panel and tight woodgrain, complemented by a smooth, uniform stain. This contemporary-styled cabinet is ideal for modern homes and apartment kitchens. Its solid construction and veneered MDF center panel resist warping when exposed to changes in humidity levels.
Repose gray
Repose gray cabinets are a versatile color that will give your kitchen a new look. This color is a medium gray with a hint of purple in the morning light. The color is a great option for a kitchen that has a white island. You can also pair it with another light gray color to create a neutral, warm look in your kitchen.
This color goes well with country-style furniture and accessories, such as a country valance on the window. It has also become a popular choice for homebuilders, since it works well throughout the entire house. This neutral shade looks great with white trim and a dark wood floor. It also gives a warm and custom look to a custom-made kitchen.
If you’d like to have a gray color in your kitchen, consider using Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. This versatile shade can coordinate with many different colors and is Joanna Gaines’ favorite for her Fixer Upper home. In addition to this color, she also likes SW Dovetail and SW Alabaster.
Repose Gray is a wonderful color that looks great on cabinets and will complement other elements in your kitchen. You can pair it with other colors, like white, but it will also complement wood floors, furniture color, and fireplace tile. It is a chameleon color, which means that it can pick up hints of color wherever it is used. LRV (Light Reflectance Value) is the number associated with how light a paint color will reflect.
Repose Gray cabinets kitchen will add a touch of glam to any kitchen. This paint color can be used on both walls and cabinets, depending on the style you choose. In a glammed-up kitchen, this paint color looks great with gray-veined marble. Repose Gray cabinets are also a good choice for bathrooms.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the drawbacks of an open-concept cooking style?
Privacy is the greatest concern. You can’t hide your mess from guests when you have an open-concept cooking area. If you are passionate about cooking, it might be a problem to have too many people around. An open kitchen can be challenging to keep clean if there isn’t a designated cooking and eating area. An open-concept kitchen is not the best option if your space is limited.
What is the best way to adapt to Vancouver’s climate with a white kitchen?
Vancouver homeowners love white kitchens. It brightens up the space, and gives it a modern look. It’s important to use natural elements like wood, as we don’t have much sunlight in Metro Vancouver.
How do you design a kitchen renovation?
This question is not easy to answer as every kitchen renovation project will be different. But, it is important to get a clear understanding about your needs and goals before you begin designing a kitchen.
You may need to meet with an architect or professional designer to discuss your ideas.
Once you have a sense of what you want, it is time to start planning your budget. You must also create a timeline for your kitchen remodel to ensure you stay on the right track and avoid any surprises.
If you work with a professional architect or kitchen designer, they will likely lead the design planning process. However, it’s still vital that you are clear about your goals and needs from the start. This will ensure that your final design is in line with your expectations, and that you are satisfied with the end result.
It is important to measure the kitchen space including its total square footage, as well the dimensions of individual areas such cabinets, countertops, appliances, windows, doors, and windows. You can also take note of any existing structural elements, such as support beams and load-bearing wall. You might consider creating a floor plan layout to help you envision how the new design will look.
A mood board (or inspiration folder) is a great way of narrowing down your options for kitchen design. Pinterest is a fantastic resource for finding kitchen images you love. You can also cut out pages from magazines to collect fabric swatches, paint chips and other visual elements that you like. This information will come in handy when planning your next renovation.
Once you have a good idea of what you want your new kitchen to look like, it’s time to start thinking about the budget and timeline. What budget are you willing and able to spend? What are your must and desirable-to-haves? When do you need the renovation to be completed? These questions will help you plan.
If you plan to renovate your kitchen yourself, consider the cost for materials, appliances, cabinets and countertops. The project’s time frame and potential disruptions to your life will also need to be considered. If you hire a contractor to complete the renovation, they will likely give you a detailed quote that includes all costs as well as a timeline.
To avoid stress and keep your kitchen renovation on schedule, it is essential to create a timeline. Once you have an idea of when each stage of the process should occur you can create a more detailed schedule. To avoid any unanticipated delays, you should be flexible about your timeline.
By following these steps, you can develop a clear plan for your kitchen renovation. This will help ensure that the final result is everything you’ve been dreaming of and that the process runs smoothly from start to finish.

Mindful grey sherwin williams
Tumblr media
#Mindful grey sherwin williams how to
This extremely popular greige is one of Sherwin Williams’ top 50 colors. Mindful Gray is one of the darker greige colors, with a LRV of 48. While Repose Gray is just a few notches darker than that ideal LRV for all rooms, as long as you’ve got enough light, it makes for a relaxing all-over color. Its LRV of 58 makes it a medium color, and gives it enough body to contrast with white. Repose Gray is a popular warm greige that leans a bit towards its beige side. Now that you’re up to speed, let’s check out the best grays Sherwin Williams has to offer! Repose Gray Many designers feel that colors from about 60-62 are ideal because they can handle a wide range of lighting situations. The higher the LRV number is, the lighter the color is. The scale runs from absolute black at 0 to sheer white at 100. Just a note before we dive in: if you’re not familiar with Light Reflectance Value (LRV), it’s a scale used to measure how light or dark a paint color is.
#Mindful grey sherwin williams how to
We’ll also be taking a look at these grays in real houses to show you how to use them. These grays are on-trend, able to be used anywhere, and perennial favorites among Sherwin Williams’ gray paint colors. How do you choose from all that variety? Never fear! In this article, I’m going to highlight the best of the best. There’s also a whole range of grays, from inky charcoal grays that read nearly black, to whispy smoke grays that are just this side of white. Grays can come in warm, cool, and neutral variants, and can also be tinted with other colors, such as beige, blue, and green. It’s the foundation of the popular and trendy “greige” family–that’s a blend of gray and beige. Gray is the overwhelming favorite for staging homes to sell, and it shows up in best-selling color lists again and again. It’s a neutral that can take part in any palette and any style of decor. Gray just might be the most versatile color on the wheel.

Popular Paint Colors To Help You Sell Your House
Tumblr media
You’ve decided it’s time to sell your home! Before calling your realtor, you’ll want to freshen up your house to attract buyers. One of the best ways to get people interested in your home is by repainting your interior and even the exterior. You want a prospective buyer to walk into your home and be wowed by the space!
Choosing the right colors will help transform your home, brightening a dark room, making a small room seem more spacious, all ensuring that you get a sold sign up faster. While figuring out what colors to pick can be overwhelming, I'm here to walk you through this process and help you choose the best paint colors to help you sell your house. Architects and interior designers in Delhi says that a right combination of colors can your home more appealing.
Picking Paint Colors
When thinking about painting your home before selling, you want to keep the buyer in mind. Tina Nokes, owner of Five Star Painting of Loudoun and Western Fairfax VA, suggests painting in neutrals.
“Homeowners looking to sell should stay away from dark, deep or bold colors such as reds, dark browns, oranges, golds or any neon colors,” she said. “Prospective buyers are looking for a home that is move-in ready and usually these types of colors don't go with the furniture they have. That is why neutrals help sell a house because a buyer can imagine putting their things into the space right away and not have to paint until they are ready to.”
Here are the things to keep in mind when painting your home to put it on the market:
Popular Neutral Paint Colors
Exterior Paint Ideas
Interior Paint Colors
Interior Painting Costs
Popular Neutral Paint Colors
Neutral colors are anything but boring, they create the perfect canvas for you to showcase your home and will help new homeowners envision their life in your home. When picking the right color, think of greys or beiges. Nokes suggests using Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, Repose Gray, or Balanced Beige. These timeless hues work well to make your home look cleaner and more practical than if you were to use a bright color.
Neutrals might not be your style but remember that your goal is to sell your house by appealing to the majority of homebuyers. Future homeowners can always repaint according to their desired color palate.
Exterior Paint Ideas
Over time, mother nature can take a toll on your home’s exterior. The outside of your home is what prospective homeowners see first when they come to check out your home. Curb appeal isn’t only about a landscaping, your home’s exterior paint might also need an update.
When researching colors for the exterior make sure you stay true to your home’s style. Tudor-style homes are known for their brown, cream and white exteriors which help compliment the brick, stone and slate also on the exterior. Painting a Tudor another color will take away from their elegance. Colonial Revivals, on the other hand, can be found sporting a wide range of color schemes. Just be sure to keep it simple by picking one color for the shutter and another color for the rest of the house. You don’t want your house to stand out for the wrong reasons.
If you’re not looking to do a complete overhaul, Nokes suggests repainting the trim in Sherwin Williams Extra White or Alabaster. Painting outdoor trim can be a DIY project, but always make sure to follow appropriate safety precautions.
Interior Paint Colors
If you’re nervous that painting the whole house one color will make it feel flat, choose an accent color in a darker shade to use either on an accent wall or to create a cohesive look from room to room. Accent walls can be tricky when trying to sell your home because they are so subjective. The way you’ve set up your furniture and its size dictate how you view your space. Potential homeowners don’t want to feel locked in to how you’ve set up shop. Try and keep things simple.
If you’re still unsure what colors would work best with your home, you might want to look into hiring an interior designer. The national average cost to hire a professional is $4,735, with most homeowners paying somewhere between $3,407 and $5,143. An interior designer will know what colors will work well in each room, which colors will nicely complement each other and what prospective homeowners are looking for.
Interior Painting Costs
The total cost of painting your home will depend on a few factors. If you’re into DIYing, this might be a task you can take on if you plan ahead. Educate yourself with what you need before tackling this project and how to do it properly. Before making one brush stroke, be sure you have all the necessary tools on hand. Here are the top 3 items you might overlook:
Use our paint calculator to account for extra
A drop cloth will protect your floors from getting paint on them
A quality paintbrush that won’t leave behind debris
While you might be okay with small errors, remember that you are updating the paint to sell your house. It might be best to hire a professional painter. The national average cost to paint a home’s interior is $1,679, with most homeowners paying somewhere between $1,130 to $1,826. Costs will vary depending on your location, how much square footage you’re painting, and the quality of paint you choose, with the bulk of the cost going towards the labor itself.
Conclusion
Keeping future homebuyers top of mind, choose a warm neutral grey or beige paint color to revamp your home. Fresh walls with a timeless color palate will let homebuyers focus on the beauty of your house and help them envision it as their potential home.

😍 #WOWWEDNESDAY 😍 Slightly addicted to black tile, black paint, black light fixtures. Okay...let's just called it what it is, I'm obsessed with it. It is truly a pop of color in a room of Agreeable Grays or Repose Grays. This black tile in the bathroom from @beckiowens's page is just absolutely GORGEOUS! What is something you've went against the grain on in your home? P.S. Discovered a Sherwin Williams paint called Black Magic....O°M°G....talk about gorgeous.....wait until you see how I incorporated that little mix in the investment property. https://www.instagram.com/p/B7pD4JbHeYY/?igshid=1r9i154w43a25

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Atlanta
Happy Mother’s Day, my dear friends! I hope you are able to enjoy this special day surrounded by love. I will be celebrating it with my kids and my heart will be with my mother. I know that, although I am far away from her, love unites us.
Talking about love, I am sure you guys will love Leah’s home as much I do! As you will soon see, this is a place that is calm, peaceful and I’m sure it will help you start this week feeling a little more relaxed and with good energy around you.
Here, the sweet Leah explains more about her beautiful home:
“Hi everyone! My name is Leah of @bellsheepstudio. It is exciting to have this opportunity to welcome each of you into our home! I am so grateful that Luciane invited me to contribute to her Beautiful Homes of Instagram series, as I continue to find so much personal inspiration from Home Bunch.
My husband, Daniel and I have been married a little over three years now. We both grew up in Georgia and originally met as I was entering my senior year of high school. It wasn’t until eight year later that we reconnected and quickly realized we wanted to commit to choosing one another each day forward.
We spent our first two years of marriage in an apartment on the Westside of Atlanta. I loved the process of making the 700 sq. ft. feel like “us”, and it was there that we started to build our meaning of “home” together. We knew we wanted to stay in the city, so we would frequently drive through Atlanta neighborhoods dreaming and scouting potential houses. Surprisingly, we ended up finding a small lot and engaged Daniel’s brother, who owns a construction company.
I underestimated how much we would learn about ourselves and each other through the process of building our first home. It gave me a greater appreciation for design and Daniel continued to encourage me to embrace my passion for creating meaningful spaces. I was blown away by how much know-how and skill he has when it comes to construction. Many home projects later, I wonder if he regrets showing me all of his cards that soon.
Since moving in, we have tried to make decisions with our family value, “Open Home,” specifically in mind. This value serves as a reminder for us to practice hospitality. For me, this means believing that each person who comes through our door is significant and hoping that they will feel refreshed and valued from spending time with us in our home.
It has already been a joy to experience the fruit of opening our home! I hope that wherever you are today, you feel like a welcomed guest as you join me on this tour!”
  Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Atlanta
We found a charming Southern Living House Plan and were able to make a few customizations to the layout. We also added several windows to bring more natural light into our home.
House Plan: Southern Living House Plan – Old Pond Place
Our Builder: Artisans of Atlanta.
Exterior Color Scheme
Before the footings were even poured, I had already dreamed up our exterior color scheme. My inspiration came from a charming Bed and Breakfast in Charleston, SC that I had absolutely fallen in love with! The siding is Sherwin Williams Repose Gray, with Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray on the door and shutters. Our exterior trim is Sherwin Williams Alabaster White.
Meet the Homeowner!
This is the talented and beautiful, Leah from @bellsheepstudio. Make sure to follow her on Instagram!

Front Porch
My goal when designing and decorating our porch was to make it feel like a warm welcome.
Patio Furniture
Outdoor Bench & Occasional Chair: World Market
Outdoor Coffee Table: World Market
White Garden Stool: Home Goods – similar here & here.
White Planters: Target Geared Planter White – Project 62
Blue Porch Ceiling
One of my favorite things about our home is the blue porch ceiling. I have always loved this southern tradition, and whether or not it keeps “spirits” or “bugs” away it definitely adds a big dose of charm. I had trouble finding the right shade, and actually had to have it repainted because the first blue was a bit too bright. We ended up with Sherwin Williams Hinting Blue and could not be happier with how it turned out!
White Rocking Chairs: Wayfair
Front Door
The grey front door is painted in Sherwin Williams SW 7017 Dorian Gray.
White Planters: Target – similar here.

Dalia Chesterfield Sofas: Wayfair
Finn Hand-Knotted Rug: Pottery Barn
Fringe Velvet Pillows: Pottery Barn
Fiddle Tree
We got our fiddle leaf fig tree from Home Depot and I think it adds a fresh feel to our living room. Apparently naming your tree helps you remember to care for it, so we call her Opal.

Window Treatment
To accentuate our tall ceilings and add drama to the design, I hung the curtains just below the crown molding.
White Curtains: Ikea – similar here & here.
Bamboo Shades: Home Depot & here.

Coffee Table
Coffee table is from Wayfair.
Fireplace
I love how our white fireplace is the focal point of the living room. I ended up painting the inside of the firebox black to have our birch gas logs stand out a bit more.
Birch Gas Logs: Woodland Direct – similar here.
Accent Chairs
Washed Cane Chairs: Target Juniper Cane and White Washed Wood Barrel Chair – similar here.
Study
The study is Daniel’s favorite spot in our house to begin his day drinking coffee and reading. I selected French doors so that this little space would still be open and feel like a part our main living area.
Blue Velvet Chairs
These velvet blue chairs were purchased from Home Goods before we even moved in. I typically purchase neutral furniture, but these were just too fun! The stools were a second-hand find that I recovered in a dainty navy and white herringbone fabric.
Chairs: Lucite Bristol Sea Blue Velvet Wingback Chair (discountinued) – Others: here, here & here.
Desk & Rug
Mango Wood Desk: Marshalls – Similar: here & here

Paint Color

Trim: Sherwin Williams Pure White.
Ceiling: Sherwin Williams Ceiling White.
Blue Hutch
When we were young my mom constantly had us in and out of antique shops. She definitely passed this ‘treasure hunting’ gene along to me! Our blue antique hutch was a Facebook Marketplace find. To bring the piece to life, I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Aubusson Blue and sealed it with Annie Sloan Dark and Clear Wax.
Books
To keep our shelves simple and neutral, I turned my antique book collection spine in.
Dining Area
Lighting is one of my favorite design elements, so I was ecstatic to find this modern chandelier at West Elm for our dining space. Our table was a hand-me-down from my mom that I stripped and white washed with leftover paint from our walls.
Globe Chandelier Light: West Elm,  Sculptural Glass Globe Chandelier
Dining Room Side Chairs: Hayneedle
Dining Room Head Chairs: Wayfair
Beautiful Dining Tables: here, here, here, here, here & here.
Open Layout
The dining room opens to a bright and functional white kitchen.
Kitchen
I always have loved a clean white kitchen, so I was set on having white cabinetry and countertops. We went with flat panel, shaker cabinets accented by 3×6 white subway tile.
Kitchen Island
We finished our countertops with a straight edge and slightly rounded corners. Our kitchen island measures 66in wide by 36in high.

I found this chest of drawers in a little antique shop and updated it with Amy Howard Chalk Paint in French Blue.
Family Values
We currently have our letter board displaying our family values.
Master Bedroom
I went completely neutral in our bedroom (I count leopard as a neutral :)). I wanted it to be a calming retreat where we would truly feel relaxed.
Gray Tufted Headboard: One Kings Lane
Leopard Pillows: Etsy
Inspiration
The design inspiration for our bedroom is centered around this antique oil painting of sheep. I found this gem at a local auction, and it was the best $80 I have ever spent.

The Case for Gray: 6 Reasons Why Gray Should Stay
The Case for Gray: 6 Reasons Why Gray Should Stay
With the new year comes the new forecasted trends in design. I recently came across this article from Elle Decor looking at the Interior Design trends that are In and Out in 2020.  You have to take these types of lists with a grain of salt; some of the Ins and Outs contradict themselves and this list has some trends labeled as “In” that lists from other publications have as “Out” and vice versa. At the very least, they can be used as inspiration sources for different looks you might be hoping to achieve in your own home.
One trend I noticed most lists as having on its way out is using the color gray; whether it’s on the walls, the fabric of your sofa, or the tile or countertop in your kitchen or bathroom. Now, I may be a little biased because I LOVE gray, but I would like to make the case for keeping this middle of the road color in use for as long as possible. Here are my 6 reasons why…
1. It’s Not Black, But It’s Not White
When I think of black contrasting with white in interior design, those teal zig zags and purple streaks of the 90’s are conjured in my mind alongside black and white checkerboard floors. It seems difficult to do white and black without creating an atmosphere of glossy cotillion dance floors and poofy dress sleeves. But enter the color gray, and suddenly you’ve moved into the new millennium. When I want to create contrast in a space, gray is often my go to.
2. There Are So Many Variations
Just like white, gray has many, MANY, variations. You can find grays that are warmer, think griege, and grays that are cooler. There are so many grays that it can be a little overwhelming, and even tricky, to find the right one. Case in point… I’m in the middle of painting the interior of my home from a “Custom Tan” the last owner used on a majority of the walls, to a gray. My intention was to find a gray that was close to white but with enough color to it that you could tell it was gray AND to create a light and airy feel to all the “public” areas of our home. I originally chose Sherwin Williams Fleur de Sel which on a palette brochure and sample the color looks almost white but softly gray. On the wall? It. Was. Blue. Even two coats over the custom tan was still almost a cinderella blue. So at the advice of a contractor who does a lot of painting, “everyone does Repose Gray, just do that.” And that, my friends, is exactly what I did and I love it. Repose gray is a little blue in the evening and little brown in the sun. It’s light and airy feeling, but soft and not stark. It works with modern vibes, but could easily be used for almost any style. Which segues nicely into my next reason…
3. It Goes With Everything
Gray is like white and black in that it can go with everything (ok, I know not EVERYTHING but most things). One of the “restrictions” that has been placed on my own home decor by my husband, who also has to live in our house…I guess, is that I must leave the walls neutral but can bring in color through the other things in the room. Oh, and no wallpaper (which is having a moment, by the way). Gray is a great way to add warmth to the walls while not isolating myself to a specific color scheme so I can change decor and keep the wall color.
4. It’s Cleaner…Sort Of.
Gray furniture doesn’t show dirt as easily as white or sit as boldly in a space as a piece of black furniture might. When my 2 year old spills blackberry jelly on my dark gray sofa, the purple stain is barely visible after I wash it off. My husband’s gray car often looks much less dirty than my black one, and he does much more driving than I do. Gray may not make your space cleaner, but it will definitely hide your dirt better.
5. It’s Unifying
Maybe because of its lower contrast to other colors, gray seems a simpler color to use at any capacity. I would argue that in many design situations, gray can be the color that brings together all the other colors in a space. Since it goes with “everything”, a hue can be chosen that matches the current palette, and once placed amongst the other colors, can enhance them much more than if they didn’t have a gray compliment. The piece of art below exemplifies this quality.
6. It’s Versatile
As far as neutrals go, when compared with tan/beige, which can really only be a warm color, gray can be used as either warm or cool. Its versatility means that you don’t have to have everything in a space be warm or cool. It seems that as opposed to more bold and outgoing color choices, gray isn’t as polarizing to the user. This is why builders and contractors put it in so many homes, especially those getting ready to go on the market. Even if you plan to change the color later, gray is neutral enough that it doesn’t block a person’s ability to see the house with their furniture and their lifestyle, no matter what that might look like.
There’s one trend involving gray that I definitely agree should be on the way out and that’s gray on gray on gray. I was browsing Zillow recently and found a home in my area for sale that had  gray wood floors, gray cabinets, gray quartz countertops, gray backsplash, and the walls were…you guessed it… gray. It was WAY too much gray. Now there is a monochromatic style where, when tastefully done, can look good. But this was not it. So while I’m making the case for gray, I’m not making the case for ALL gray everything all the time.
What do you think? Are you a fan of gray? Do you want help in changing the colors in your home, with or without grays? Send me a message through the Just Ask Jen page. I’d love to hear from you!

Gifting the Household Project To Do List that Never Gets Done
Sharing a glimpse into two recent (and incredibly simple!) household projects we completed — updating our fireplace from brass to black and swapping out all the doorknobs in our home to make them look a little less dated. Thank you so much to Lowe’s Home Improvement for sponsoring this post!
Is all of your holiday shopping done for the season? If so, you’re way better off than we are in our house! I admittedly always find myself scrambling and purchasing gifts for friends and family up until the last minute but sometimes it takes a while for inspiration to hit and for me to really feel like I have a great gift idea for my loved ones.
Fortunately I am done shopping for Ryan’s gifts this year which is a relief because sometimes he’s the hardest person for me to shop for, despite the fact that he’s not overly picky and doesn’t have lofty high expectations. I just put pressure on myself to make his Christmas special every year because I love giving him gifts that make him smile, especially when it’s something he might not think to get himself.
And that’s where the gift idea I’m sharing today comes in! You know those home improvement projects or simple home updates you’ve had on your household project to do list for years? What if you gave your spouse/roommate/friend/partner a jump start in completing one of your projects? That was one of my gift ideas for Ryan this year!
Throughout the nearly 15 years we’ve been together, we’ve prioritized experiences over material gifts in our relationship and now that we’re parents and homeowners, our gift-giving preferences have shifted again. Experiences always reign supreme but home improvement-related gifts rank pretty high up there for the two of us. We’ll often gift each other something for our home — my Cyber Monday purchase of the Nest Learning Thermostat for our house was actually one of my early Christmas gifts to Ryan — and find that home improvement projects or home decor updates end up making us happier in the long run than some of the more random trendy gifts out there.
I was recently approached by Lowe’s Home Improvement about holiday gifting and I could not have replied to their email faster if I tried. (For the sake of transparency, Ryan works for Lowe’s so we’re obviously a Lowe’s-loving family, but I was actually approached for this partnership by Lowe’s unaware of our family’s affiliation to the company.) I was so excited to receive their email because a gift idea I already had planned for Ryan was the perfect fit: Updating our fireplace and all of the doorknobs in our house to get rid of the ’90s brass that’s bothered us sine we moved into our home. I initially planned to give Ryan a brushed chrome doorknob for Christmas with the promise of updating the other knobs around our house and hoped to surprise him with a revamped fireplace. Basically, I wanted to give him two simple household updates that have been on our home improvement to do list forever but, for one reason or another, just never seemed to get done.
When I chatted with Lowe’s about my idea, they were on board and our phone call simply prompted me to get started on our home improvement projects a little sooner and complete them before the holidays rather than after Christmas.
I ended up making a trip to Lowe’s with Ryder while Chase was at preschool a couple of weeks ago and picked up everything I needed to update our family fireplace and change the brass detailing to a more contemporary matte black. I had Ryan unwrap the gift — high-heat matte black spray paint, a plastic painting drop cloth and painter’s tape — and included before and after pictures of a fireplace I found online that went through a similar update. After he opened my gift, I told him I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and was going to tackle the fireplace update for him as an early Christmas gift and he was pumped! When I say we’ve hated our fireplace since day one, I mean it! We both thought it was just the biggest eyesore so this update was much-needed and ended up feeling like a huge gift to both of us. I just wish we would’ve done it sooner!
Here’s the BEFORE:
And here’s the AFTER:
I used the morning of the first snowy day of the year in Charlotte when it was sleeting outside to take apart our fireplace (it was shockingly easy the whole frame just popped off in two pieces) and laid down the plastic drop cloth in our garage and got to work.
It took only three coats of the high-heat spray paint to cover the brass (I waited about 30 minutes in between coats just to be safe) and by that same afternoon we had a revamped fireplace we finally LOVE!
The fireplace update was part of our bigger plan to update our living room and I wanted to share some before/after pictures of that with you guys as well. (Note: This is not part of my Lowe’s collaboration — just something we’ve been working on!)

AFTER:
It’s absolutely still a work in progress but that’s the update so far! We had the room painted Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams, swapped out our beige couch and loveseat for a white one and two chairs (thanks to your IKEA recommendations!) and bought a new rug for the space over Black Friday weekend. Hooray for a much-needed refresh!
When I mentioned my idea for updating the brass doorknobs around our house to Ryan, he said he would happily take over that particular project thanks to a handy little tool we picked up during a prior trip to Lowe’s: The Dremel Cordless Screwdriver. You guys, this thing is basically Ryan’s dream tool and made replacing all the knobs around our house (yep, even closet knobs and bathroom knobs) a breeze. It is so easy to use and easily cut the door knob swap project time in half thanks to its ability to quickly remove and drive in screws with the light push of the screwdriver. If tools or any sort of home improvement-related gift is on your radar, Lowe’s is awesome because they price match everything, so you’re always guaranteed to get the lowest price from them.
(Chase clearly wanted in on the action.)
We replaced our brass knobs with Schlage Chrome Door Knobs and here’s a peek at the before/after of one of our downstairs coat closet doors.

AFTER:
These two simple home improvement projects have been on our to do list forever and I’m so happy they’re finally complete. We absolutely love the way they look in our home and they truly feel like the kind of gift that keeps on giving because we’ll enjoy them every day in our house. Up next: Figuring out what we want to hang above the mantel now that we are okay with people looking at our fireplace again!

Are you ready to get started on painting your home before putting it on the market? Contact a painting contractor today for quotes from contractors in your area, for free.
