What Does It Mean When Water Backs Up Into The Bathtub?
Water backing up into the bathtub drain baskets can be a perplexing and frustrating issue for homeowners. This problem not only affects the functionality of your bathroom but can also signal deeper plumbing issues that need attention. Understanding why this happens and how to address it is crucial for maintaining a clean, efficient, and safe home environment.
In this article, we will explore why water backs up into the bathtub, how to identify the problem and provide solutions to resolve it. We will also dive into the role of plumbing tools like the drain hair catcher and how Drain Buddy Ultra Flo can be the ideal solution for tackling these plumbing issues.
Tumblr media
Common Causes of Water Backup in Bathtubs
When water backs up into your bathtub, it is typically due to a clog or obstruction in the plumbing system. These backups can occur when a blockage in the drain line prevents water from flowing freely through the pipes. Let us explore some common causes of water backup:
Clogged Drain Pipes
The most common cause of water backup in the bathtub is a clog in the drain pipe. This can be caused by hair, soap scum, mineral buildup, or other debris that has accumulated over time. When the drain is clogged, the water cannot flow freely, backing it into the bathtub.
Blocked Sewer Line
If the sewer line connecting your home to the municipal sewer system becomes blocked, water can back up into multiple drains in the home, including the bathtub. Sewer line clogs are more severe and often require professional intervention to fix.
Broken or Damaged Pipes
Over time, pipes can become damaged due to age, tree root infiltration, or ground shifting. If a pipe is cracked or broken, water can back up, disrupting the water flow through the system.
Ventilation Issues
Your plumbing system relies on vents to allow air to flow through the pipes and balance pressure. If a vent is clogged or blocked, it can lead to improper drainage, causing water to return to the bathtub.
Improper Drain Installation
Sometimes, the plumbing system may need to be correctly installed, leading to water backups. A proper slope or alignment of pipes can result in slow drainage or backups into the bathtub.
How to Identify Water Backup Issues
Diagnosing the source of the water backup is essential to address the issue effectively. Here are a few signs that your bathtub is experiencing a water backup:
Slow Drainage: If water drains slowly from the bathtub, it is an early indicator that something obstructs the flow.
Water Overflowing: If water starts to rise or overflow in the bathtub when other fixtures, such as the sink or toilet, are used, it may indicate a larger plumbing issue.
Foul Odors: A backed-up drain often produces unpleasant odours, signs of decomposing debris, or waste stuck in the pipes.
Gurgling Sounds: If you hear gurgling sounds from the drain when water runs elsewhere in the house, it could be a sign of a blockage in the main sewer line.
Troubleshooting Water Backup
Before calling a plumber, there are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the issue yourself:
Check the Drain: Use a plunger or a drain snake to dislodge any debris causing the blockage in the drain.
Clean the Trap: The trap beneath the bathtub can accumulate hair and debris. Use a wrench to remove it and clean out any blockages.
Use a Drain Hair Catcher: Preventing future backups is as important as fixing the current issue. Installing a drain hair catcher in your bathtub drain will help catch hair and other debris before they clog the pipes.
If these steps do not resolve the problem, the issue may be deeper within the plumbing system, and professional help may be required.
4 In-Depth Questions About Bathtub Water Backup
What are the most common reasons for water backing into the bathtub?
Most typical reasons for water backup in bathtubs
Clogs, damaged pipes, or sewer line issues often cause water backups in bathtubs. Clogs typically form when debris, such as hair, soap scum, or food waste, gets stuck in the pipes. Over time, this blockage impedes the water flow, causing it to back into the bathtub.
In more severe cases, blocked sewer lines can cause water to back up into multiple drains in the home, including the bathtub. Additionally, damaged pipes or tree roots infiltrating the plumbing system can lead to cracks that result in water backups.
How can you prevent water from backing up into the bathtub?
Preventing water backups in the bathtub
The best way to prevent water from backing into the bathtub is by regularly maintaining the plumbing system. Here are a few tips:
Install a Drain Hair Catcher: A drain hair catcher is an excellent tool for preventing hair and debris from entering the pipes and causing blockages.
Regularly Clean the Drains: Periodically clean the drain with hot water, vinegar, and baking soda to break down any soap scum or buildup.
Avoid Pouring Grease Down the Drain: Grease and oils can solidify in the pipes, leading to blockages.
Schedule Routine Plumbing Inspections: Have a professional plumber inspect your system periodically to check for potential leaks, cracks, or tree root invasions.
Following these simple steps, you can keep your bathtub drains functioning correctly and avoid costly repairs.

How to repair a kitchen faucet
Tumblr media
Repairing a kitchen faucet is a DIY project that is usually easier and less time-consuming than you might think. Leaks are fixed either by treating clogs with vinegar or by replacing some of the smaller parts of the faucet. The parts that are most likely to need replacement will depend on the type of faucet you have. Keep an eye on the parts as you work, and reassemble them later to keep your faucet working as good as new.
Prepare for the repair work
Locate the leak. Before you begin, examine the faucet to find out where the leak is. Leaks almost always occur at either the base or the spout of the faucet. Once you know where the leak is, you can determine which parts are responsible for the leak.
Turn off the water supply to the faucet. First, look under your sink. You may see two valves that you can turn clockwise to stop the flow of water into the faucet. If the valves are not there, turn off the main water line. This is usually located in the basement, next to the water meter.
Turn on the water tap to relieve the water pressure. Make sure that the water supply is turned off before removing the faucet. Allow the water to flow from the faucet until it stops. Accumulated pressure will also drain.
Cover the hole in the sink with a strainer to catch small debris. It's no fun if a small but important part falls into the sink. To save yourself extra work, you can place the sink's strainer baskets over the drain.
Label and photograph the faucet as you remove the parts. Once you have repaired the faucet, you will need to return the parts in the correct order. To remember this order, have a camera nearby to document your work. Also, keep the parts separate and organized, so you know when you need which part.
Pour some vinegar into a container to clean the faucet parts. You'll probably find that some parts have mineral deposits on them. Soak the parts in vinegar for a few minutes first to soften the buildup, then scrub them with a microfiber cloth or nylon abrasive pad.

Basket Strainer Manufacturer in USA
Tumblr media
Valvesonly is the best Basket Strainer Manufacturer in USA. A basket strainer is a device that is often attached to a pump's suction and is used to filter out particles that are too large to fit through the strainer's mesh and could otherwise harm the pump or its internal components. Designs include a casing, a fastened top cover, a discharge outlet, and a suction input. The filter, which is normally made of wire mesh, is housed in the casing and is used to catch solids that get caught in the mesh and sink into the casing. Top covers might be solid or transparent. Solids can be drained away from housings by sinking to the bottom of the casing, where there may be a drain.
They are also available in Duplex style where it consists of two strainers and diverting valves. These strainers are suitable for robust chemical and abrasive applications.
Types of basket strainer:
• Simplex basket strainer.
• Duplex basket strainer.
Simplex Basket strainer:
Simplex variants are longer and wider in design, contain a noticeably larger basket with a removable cover for ease of maintenance, and are built for larger pipes. They are made to capture more solids because of their increased surface area and reduced pressure dips. They can only be mounted horizontally, but without draining the piping, they are simple to examine and maintain. To prevent issues with water flow, Simplex Basket strainers are utilised in pumps, pipelines, and spray nozzels. They lessen the need for frequent washing, saving time and money as well as decreasing downtime.
Duplex basket strainer:
Large trash and dirt particles are eliminated and constrained by the design of this strainer. Strainer Baskets can be placed on either of its two levels. When this strainer is utilised, a pipeline's flow cannot be interrupted. They have two filter baskets that can be used together or independently. Twin filters allow processes to continue operating while being maintained, as one can operate while the other is being maintained.
Features
The basket strainer is ideal when rapid flow and strong pressure are required. The lid may be removed to provide simple access to the strainer element, making them simple to maintain or clean. This makes it simple to replace, clean, or fix them. Duplex strainers are basket strainers with two layers that are often used. These are highly useful because they don't need interrupting the strainers' output and allow the operation to continue while the strainer is cleaned or maintained. This makes it quite useful and manageable.

Is Skimmer Necessary For Pool?
Written by Admin and published on https://platinumpools.com/.
The skimmer is a device located on the side of the pool that helps to remove debris from the water. It consists of a basket that collects leaves and other small objects, and a pump that circulates the water through the filter. The skimmer is an important part of the pool system because it helps to keep the water clean and free of debris. Without a skimmer, the pool would quickly become clogged with leaves and other organic matter, which would create an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. In addition, the skimmer helps to circulate the water, which ensures that all areas of the pool are evenly chlorinated. As a result, the skimmer is an essential part of any swimming pool.
The Skimmer – An Important Part of the Swimming Pool
A swimming pool requires many moving parts and devices to keep it running optimally. Understanding the basic parts of a pool and how it works will help protect your investment in the long run. Amongst these parts, the skimmer plays an important role when it comes to filtering your pool’s water.
What is the Purpose of Having Pool Skimmers?
Pool skimmers are in every pool and are considered essential features. You can have multiple skimmers or just one; it all depends on the size of the oasis. In-ground skimmers are rectangular openings located on the side of a pool.
Its function is to help pull the water and absorb it into its filter system. Approximately 1/8 inch of water goes into the skimmer to remove elements such as hair, sunscreen, and leaves before they sink to the bottom. It happens without most swimmers even noticing because the suction is so discreet.
Replacing a pool pump can be very costly, so maintaining your pool skimmer is significant. Debris and chemicals will not remove appropriately from your pool without a working skimmer. It increases the risk of a cloudy pool and algae growth. In addition, your pool pump is prone to wear and tear and will likely need to be replaced long before the manufacturer’s recommended date if your skimmers are not functioning properly.
Pool Skimmer Components Pool Skimmer and Maintenance
Pool skimmers come in different sizes and vary in performance depending on which model you choose. However, regardless of which brand of skimmer you install, they all have the following parts:
The Lid: A visible component of the skimmer that prevents larger particles from entering the pool’s circulation system. It helps you not to dip into the skimmer basket often.
The Opening: Located inside the pool, it helps draw water and debris in and filters through the opening.
The Weir: A weir is a swinging flap located inside the skimmer opening that rotates with the water flow. Its primary purpose is to prevent debris from flowing back into the pool. When turning off the pool pump, the weir deftly moves to a closed position, preventing waste from re-entering the pool.
The Skimmer Basket: The strainer basket collects debris before pulling the water into your pump. It is an essential part of the skimmer because debris will clog and damage your filtration system without the basket.
The Suction Line: The suction line connects to the skimmer basket and drives the power of the skimmer.
The Balance Line: It prevents the skimmer from drawing in air when the water level has dropped below the main inlet.
How to Maintain the Skimmer
Cleaning your skimmer can help keep it functioning optimally and prevent unnecessary damage to your pool’s filtration system. A clogged skimmer basket can also cause your pump to work harder to circulate the water, ultimately shortening the life of the seals and the pump itself.
Maintaining your skimmer is easy if you follow the steps below:
Turn off the pool pump.
Remove the cover of the skimmer.
Remove the skimmer basket to empty the contents.
Put the basket back into the skimmer.
Replace the skimmer lid and repeat the process with the other skimmers, if any.
Once finished, turn the pool pump back on.
It would help in cleaning the skimmer basket at least once or twice a week to keep your pool clean and your equipment working optimally.

How to Replace Kitchen Sink Drain With a Garbage Disposal
To install a new garbage disposal, you must first remove the old one. Disconnect the water and power lines from the sink. Having a bucket or rag handy is also important. Next, remove the old garbage disposal from the sink by unscrewing its flange. Unhook the electrical connections and then move it to a safe place. Next, unscrew the sink drain to install the new disposal. Make sure to clean the area before installing the new one.
Tumblr media
Remove the three mounting screws
To remove the old drain, remove the three mounting screws that hold the sink flange to the disposal. The nut below the flange is typically a rubber snap ring. Use a screwdriver to wedge the ring loose. Unscrew the mounting bracket if necessary. Once unscrewed, remove the sink flange. Then, use a rag to plug the drain hole.
Disconnect the hot and cold water lines
To install a new garbage disposal, disconnect the hot and cold water lines from the sink. Next, unthread the sink faucet nuts. Disconnect the tailpiece of the garbage disposal from the P-trap. If it is a 3-bolt assembly, loosen the mounting ring with a screwdriver. Next, remove the sink flange by sliding the putty knife under the sink lip.
Then, install the garbage disposal basket strainer. There are several models of basket strainers available for purchase, all of which fit a standard-sized sink. Check the specifications before buying one. Afterward, prepare the sink by cleaning it thoroughly. Next, apply a 1/2 inch rope of plumber's putty underneath the flange. Finally, insert the basket strainer tightly. You will hear a click sound.
Tumblr media
To install a new sink drain, you must remove the old one first. Make sure that everything is out of the way. Otherwise, it can cause damage to the sink, counters, and plumbing. Make sure to turn off the water valves before you begin this work. After you remove the old drain, you need to install the new one. After that, you can install the garbage disposal and the new sink drain.
The next step in replacing the black undermount kitchen sink drain with a garbage disposal is to remove the obstruction. If the sink drain is completely blocked, a clog will not be difficult to remove. Alternatively, you can call a plumber. The plumber will be able to unclog the drain and install a new garbage disposal. In addition, you should also check for leaks. A leak from the top of the disposal is usually due to a flange or a deteriorated putty seal. In both cases, the leak can be easily repaired.
Tumblr media
Install a garbage disposal unit
If you want to upgrade your kitchen sink to the latest trends, you can install a garbage disposal unit. Installing one requires the same steps as installing a new dishwasher. Remember to turn off the water supply to the sink before you begin. Once you're finished, you can connect the disposal to your dishwasher. Make sure to turn off the water and power to the plug to avoid power interruption. While the garbage disposal does a great job of removing waste, it is not capable of tackling chewy food items.

The Best Way to Fix a Kitchen Sink Strainer
Tumblr media
You may be wondering how to fix a sink strainer. The truth is, it is relatively simple. Your strainer assembly is connected to your sink drain line, which carries water away from your home. You can notice a leak if the body of the strainer seals against the opening of the drain. If you've closed the drain stopper and filled the sink, it's possible that the strainer is leaking.
Unscrew the strainer nut
You can easily replace a white faucet for kitchen sink strainer by following these steps. First, you need to unscrew the strainer nut. To do this, you'll need a pipe wrench. Make sure to use the correct wrench, as an incorrect size may lead to damaging the body of the strainer. After that, you can tighten the nut until it stops against the foot of the sink. Next, you'll want to place the body of the strainer back in its proper position.
Tumblr media
Use WD40
If you're unable to unscrew the strainer nut by yourself, you can use WD40 or pliers to loosen the nut. Once you've removed the old strainer, you'll need to clean the area around the strainer so that you can place the new one. However, if the nut is tightly fastened, you should use pliers to remove it.
Purchase a new basket strainer
If the drain is still attached to the pipes, you can remove them. If you are replacing a kitchen sink strainer, make sure you save all of the old parts, as you'll use them again. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a new basket strainer and take them to a plumbing supplier for the replacement parts. A replacement basket strainer will come with the appropriate parts. You should also use channel-style pliers to loosen the slip nuts on the drain fittings.
Tumblr media
First, you should clean the sink strainer and the retaining strainer. Make sure to replace the tail piece washer as well. Next, use plumber's putty to repair the seal. To use this product, you should make sure that the drain opening is completely dry before applying the putty. You can then test the putty by turning the water on and checking if it fixes the problem. If it doesn't work, you can apply more plumber's putty. If the putty is not effective, you should try using another putty knife or a screwdriver.
A yellow leak is an indication that something is wrong with your sink strainer. If you can't find the source of the leak, use a food coloring solution to color the water. It will give you a clue about where to look. Next, you need to inspect the strainer assembly nut. If it is loose, it is likely to be leaking. In addition, it might be leaking water.
Visit the local hardware store
If you can't find the replacement parts, visit your local hardware store. A salesperson will be able to recommend a suitable replacement for your strainer. Once you've removed the old strainer, you'll need to coat it with plumber's putty and insert it into the sink. Next, you'll need to put a friction ring or rubber gasket over the new strainer. Finally, tighten the new locknut.

New to plumbing... is there anything wrong about my setup
Tumblr media
Hi there. I'm a relatively new homeowner working on learning how to do things around the house, and it came time to fix a sink drain. I think I have it setup to work but I would love it if someone knowledgeable could tell me if I'm about to mess something up before I cut everything and glue and screw it into place.
I replaced the basket strainers, put an outlet waste kit, a p-trap kit, then a trap adapter and a coupler into the existing PVC drain. Did I make any mistakes with part selection?

In-Depth Questions About Drain Repair and Replacement
What are the signs that my drain needs to be repaired?
Several indicators suggest your drain requires professional attention:
Consistent Clogging: If you frequently unclog your drains only to face the same problem soon after, it's time to call a professional.
Unusual Sounds: Gurgling noises often indicate air trapped in your pipes, which points to a blockage.
Wet Spots Around Drains: Leaks or damage can cause moisture to appear around your drains or pipes.
High Water Bills: Hidden leaks increase water usage, reflecting utility bills.
When these signs appear, contact Drain Buddy Ultra Flo to resolve the issue quickly and effectively.
Why is a drain hair catcher essential for preventing clogs?
A drain hair catcher acts as the first line of defense against blockages. Here's why it's indispensable:
Traps Hair Effectively: Hair is a primary cause of bathroom drain clogs. A hair catcher prevents this by capturing strands before they enter your pipes.
Reduces Maintenance Costs: Preventing blockages saves you from expensive professional cleaning or repairs.
Easy to Clean: Most hair catchers are designed for hassle-free cleaning, allowing you to remove debris effortlessly.
Using a hair catcher from Drain Buddy Ultra Flo protects your plumbing system while keeping your drains clear and functional.
When should I replace my drain pipes instead of repairing them?
Pipe replacement is often more cost-effective than repeated repairs, especially in the following cases:
Severe Corrosion: When pipes are extensively corroded, repairing them may only provide a temporary fix.
Frequent Leaks: Persistent leaks indicate structural issues that require replacement.
Old Plumbing Systems: If your pipes are decades old, replacing them ensures better performance and reliability.
Upgrading to Modern Materials: Switching to durable materials like PVC improves efficiency and reduces maintenance.
At Drain Buddy Ultra Flo, we evaluate your plumbing system thoroughly to recommend the best solution.
How can bathroom stoppers improve my drain system?
A bathroom stopper is more than just a tool to retain water in your sink or tub. Here's how it benefits your drain system:
Prevents Foreign Objects: Stoppers block small items from accidentally entering your pipes by sealing the drain.
Enhances Water Usage: Stoppers ensure water conservation, which is perfect for baths or washing.
Reduces Maintenance Efforts: Preventing debris from entering the drain minimizes clogs and keeps the system running smoothly.
The bathroom stoppers offered by Drain Buddy Ultra Flo combine practicality with durability, making them an essential addition to your drain care routine.

How to replace a kitchen sink
Disconnect the piping and drain connections
Turn off the valves for the hot and cold water supplies. Open the faucet to make sure all the water drains out of the pipes and holds the shutoff.
Disconnect the supply lines with a wrench.
Loosen the nuts securing the faucet and disconnect the faucet and the hot and cold water lines from the sink.
Disconnect the drain piece from either the trap or garbage disposal, depending on the sink. The end piece should be loosened with a nut, which can often be loosened from the trap first and then unscrewed from the drain.
Separate the sink from the countertop
Remove the clamps that hold the sink in place.
Slide a spatula under the lip of the sink and gently loosen it until it can be pried out.
Remove the sink from the opening.
Prepare the new sink
Dry-fit the new sink to make sure the hole opening is the same as the new sink. If not, you will need to match the countertop.
Do as much work as possible on the countertop for easy access.
Basket strainer installation. For the sink Richard used, he was able to install the basket strainer without putty. Read the instructions to find out what is required for your sink.
Install a new faucet
Richard opted for a faucet with a handle in the center, meaning the handle connects directly to the spout. Note: If you want the faucet and handles to be separate units, opt for a wide-jet faucet.
To cover the two outer holes, use a cover plate. Usually use plumber's putty, but check the instructions to see if your plate requires it.
Place the plate and cover gasket on the sink. Insert the faucet.
Place the bracket and nut over the drain hose.
Tighten the nut either with the special tool that came with the faucet or use a sink wrench or a multipurpose plumbing wrench.
Install new sink
Clean the countertop with a household detergent.
Turn the sink over and apply silicone around the edges of the sink.
Carefully insert the sink, making sure it is snug against the countertop.
Attach clips to secure the sink in place.

Tips to Find the Right Kitchen Sink Drain Strainer
Usually home owners and commercial kitchen owners make use of kitchen sink basket which helps in preventing the passing through of particles to the plumbing system of the sink. However it often leads to clog formations in the drain pipes. Since this basket is commonly located at the bottom part of the sink after a long period there are leaks developing in the basket, thus it requires repair or replacement. Kitchen sink strain is another helpful method to eliminate the particles going to the pipes. Similar to the drain the strainer works to keeps the sink functioning.
At times you cannot imagine a sink without its kitchen sink drain strainer. This attachment performs an important job and thus there are lots of strainers available in the market. They can be found as parts of your purchased sinks or replacement items for your old strainers.
Today online stores offer you a lot of stainless steel sink strainer styles from manufacturers. Within these different styles you will find a few having their own effectiveness in straining food particles from running down the drain.
Among the common styles of kitchen sink strain you can find from different stores the regular strainers that have larger holes. The holes can be in round or triangle-like shapes. Though these are good design options for your kitchen sink and can assure fast flow of water to the drain it will not enable you to have the best quality in terms of straining smaller food particles since they will fit on the holes.
There is kitchen sink drain strainer that has small holes. These are the ideal type of strainers since they can prevent smaller food particles from being drained out from the sink yet they can halt the water flow creating clogged up suds or dirt build up. Then there is sink strainer having smaller holes but with removable basket that will help you throw the food particles easily collected in the basket.
The TubShroom is made of stainless steel and rubber which makes it very durable. Its innovative design also eliminates heavily tangled messes during clean-up. Simple to use, the product does not require any assembly—it fits most standard tub drains at 1.5 to 1.75 inches.
TubShroom is headquartered in Farmingdale, Long Island and was created as a solution to a personal problem a father and pet owner was having. The brand aims to minimize the use of harmful chemical drain cleaners, whose fumes can be dangerous and ingredients can wear away at pipes. Serge Karnegie is dedicated to continuously coming up with more solutions for common, everyday problems.

how to make hard boiled eggs with a little yolk

Ah, the wonderful, incredible egg. The whites are full of protein and the yolks are high in B vitamins, omega-3s and contain all 9 essential amino acid. Not bad for about 78 calories per large egg!

I love hard-boiled eggs. Plain, or (as I prefer), with just a touch of salt and pepper, they make a great snack. And, they’re wonderful in salads! But, making them…that’s another story. For years, I dreaded making them. I especially dreaded peeling them. At best, by the time I was done, the egg would look like it had been gnawed on. At worst, it I’d lose almost half the egg in the peeling process. To make matters worse, the yolks were grey-green about half the time and stunk of sulfur.

So, I decided to investigate just how to perfectly cook (and peel) a hard-boiled egg.

Step 1: Cooking the Eggs In the process, I discovered that everyone has their own method! After listening to friends and reading countless articles (thank yous to Julia Child, The Kitchn, Serious Eats, Simply Recipes, and all of my foodie friends who offered their own suggestions), I came up with 5 methods to test. I used a mix of brown and white large eggs that I bought at the supermarket and used a 2-quart saucepan and a gas stove. Here are the results:

Method 1 Place eggs in saucepan. Fill pan with cold water until eggs are covered by 1″. (I actually measured this using a ruler. This is science, after all.) Heat water over high heat until it is at a full rolling boil. Remove pan immediately from heat, cover with lid, and leave for 10-18 minutes. When time is up, carefully strain the hot water into sink and place eggs directly into a bowl of ice water. (The water shouldn’t just be cold. It needs to be ice cold. I used a large metal mixing bowl, filled it halfway with cold water, and put a large chunk of ice into the bowl to accomplish this.) Do all of this as quickly as you can safely as the idea is to “shock” the eggs. Let the eggs sit in the ice water for at least 15 minutes before peeling. Results: This was easy, practically foolproof, and produced delicious eggs. The eggs cooked for 10 minutes had soft, flavorful yolks. The eggs that cooked for 12 minutes and I found the yolks a bit chalky for my taste, but still edible. The eggs that cooked for 15 minutes were way too chalky-tasting for me. But, no grey-green color and nothing tasted of sulfur.

Method 2 Place eggs in saucepan. Fill pan with cold water until eggs are covered by 1″. Heat water over medium heat until it is at a full rolling boil. Let eggs cook for 15 seconds, then remove pan from heat, cover with lid, and leave for 20 minutes. When time is up, carefully strain out the hot water and replace it with cold water. Let the eggs sit for one minute in the cold water. Peel. Results: The eggs had a bit of a sulfuric smell, but weren’t gray-green and the yolks tasted slightly less chalky than the 12 or 15-minute eggs from method 1.

Method 3 Place eggs on the counter for 20 minutes. Then put them in saucepan. Fill pan with cold water until eggs are covered by 1″. Heat water over medium heat until it is at a full rolling boil. Immediately remove pan from heat, cover with lid, and leave for 10 minutes. When time is up, carefully strain out the hot water and place the eggs in ice water. Leave them for at least 15 minutes before peeling. Results: The yolks were a little on the done side, but the flavor was good.

Method 4 Fill pan with hot water and bring to a full rolling boil. Carefully submerge the eggs into the hot water. Let the eggs boil for 30 seconds, then drop the heat to a very low simmer and let the eggs cook for 11 minutes (don’t cover the pan). When time is up, carefully strain out the hot water, and place the eggs in the ice water. Leave them for at least 15 minutes before peeling. Results: The egg didn’t look completely done. but were very rich in flavor. If I were going to use this method, I’d leave them for 12 or 13 minutes instead of 11.

Method 5 This is the Julia Child method. It’s also the most complicated. Place eggs in saucepan. Fill pan with cold water until eggs are covered by 1″. Heat water over high heat until it is at a full rolling boil. Immediately remove pan from heat, cover with lid, and leave for 17 minutes. When time is up, carefully strain out the hot water into another pan and put eggs in ice water. Leave them in the water for 2 minutes. Meanwhile, return the hot water to the original pan and put it on the stove over high heat. After the 2 minutes have passed, put the eggs back in the pan. When the water comes back to a full rolling boil, let the eggs cook for 10 seconds. Remove the eggs from the pan, place them back in the ice water and leave them for 15-20 minutes before peeling. Results: This egg yolk was so dried out! I didn’t like it at all. You might notice that I didn’t say anything about the egg whites. That’s because the egg whites came out perfectly for all of the different methods. I did find that the eggs cooked in cold water (which was all but method 4) had a more tender, evenly-cooked egg white and that the egg white in method 4 felt a little soft.

So, what was my favorite method? I have to go with method 1. It was simple, the eggs were tasty…what’s not to love?

Here’s the thing about eggs. Everyone likes theirs done a little differently. What’s perfect to me might be over (or under) done to you. Simple Recipes recommends sacrificing one egg of the batch to see if it’s done enough to your liking. Just carefully spoon it out, dunk it in the ice water until you can peel it, and see if it’s done enough. If it’s not, just leave them a minute or two more. The only trouble with this method is that the eggs continue to cook so if that egg was perfectly done, all your other eggs will be a little more done than this one. But, you’ll at least know where to stop the timer next time.

Step 2: Peeling the Eggs

Now, about the peeling. I was shocked to discover that all 5 of these methods produced eggs that were easy to peel. Which makes me think some of this might come down to the peeling method. Here are a few tips that seemed to help make peeling the hard-boiled eggs a success: - Make sure the ice water is super cold. - Leave the eggs in the ice water for at least 15 minutes. I didn’t find it necessary to crack them before they went into the water. - Gently tap the egg on a flat surface (I used my kitchen counter) when you’re ready to peel it. Create lots of little cracks all over the egg. - Do not try to create these cracks by rolling the egg around in your hand. I tried this once. It resulted in a partially squashed egg that stuck to its shell. - Peel your eggs under cold running water. It doesn’t have to be on full blast, just a little bit. I placed a mesh strainer in the bottom of my sink to catch all the egg shells.

A few more good things to know: 1. Older eggs are generally easier to peel than fresh eggs because as an egg ages, its pH rises and it begins to shrink away from its shell. This creates an air pocket between the egg white and the egg shell. 2. If you’re using super-fresh eggs (eggs bought from a farmer or if you’re using eggs from your own chickens), it’s often recommended that you let them sit for 10 days before boiling them. If you don’t want to wait, you might want to consider steaming them (instead of boiling them). Pour an inch of water into a pot, insert a steam basket and bring the water to a full boil. Place the eggs in the basket, cover, and let them steam for 15 minutes. This should make them easier to peel. - If you’re really struggling with peeling, gently crack them all over and then put them back in a bowl of cool water for 15 minutes.

Here are five recipes for hard boiled eggs.

source https://familycuisine.net/how-to-make-hard-boiled-eggs-with-a-little-yolk/

Home Maintenance Monthly Checklist: February
Tumblr media
February Home Maintenance Checklist
Check & Repair Caulking Around Showers & Bathtubs
WHAT: Bathroom caulking, while it makes a tub, sink and shower impervious to water for many, many years, it does not last forever. Over time, caulking can wear, crack, discolor and shrink, which may eventually lead to water damage. Prevent mildew, mold and water damage by maintaining bathroom fixtures. Plus, a fresh bead of caulk can make your space look brand new again.
WHEN: Once a year
HOW: Linked below you will find a step by step guide on how to repair and replace the caulking in your bathroom. The quick overview is to first remove the old caulking and then clean the space prior to putting on fresh caulk. Next, you will apply the new caulk and remove any excess caulking by smoothing the lines.

Clean & Vacuum Curtains & Blinds
WHAT: Cleaning curtains is one of those household chores that people put off for years. The process of taking them down, washing, pressing and re-hanging them is a laborious one — which is why many people simply replace them. However, you can keep your curtains and drapes in tip-top condition without taking them down first. As long as you have the correct tools at your disposal, curtain cleaning could be a lot easier than you think.
WHEN: Twice a year
HOW: Cleaning blinds: Close the blinds so they lie flat along the window. Starting at the top, vacuum the blinds using a brush attachment, or dust them with a feather duster or soft cloth. Close the blinds in the opposite direction and repeat, removing dust from the other side of the blinds.
Cleaning curtains: Gently vacuum fabric panels using a brush attachment and the lowest suction setting. If the fabric is loosely woven or delicate, hold the brush approximately 1 inch away from the curtain to minimize damage. A hairdryer on the cold setting can also be effective for blowing dust from delicate fabrics, and a simple feather duster or lint roller will work on sheers.

Check Under All Sinks for Leaks
WHAT: It's a good idea to routinely peek into the cabinets under your sinks to check for moisture. That way, if there's a leak, you'll catch it early. Now you need to figure out where it's coming from.
WHEN: Quarterly
HOW: Remove items from underneath your sink to see if any moisture has been collecting from the pipes or drains. If you find that there is moisture, you are off to a good start to finding your leak! Plenty of sink leaks occur at shutoff valves and supply connections The tubing that connects the sink (the toilet and tub too) to the water supply is called the "supply." For most sinks and tubs, the supply tubes are built into their valves and then fastened directly onto the water supply pipes. Wipe the supply tubing, the connections, and the shutoff valves with tissue or paper towel. If the paper is wet, you've found your leak. Most of the time, repairing the leak is simply a matter of tightening the packing nut or the compression nut on the valve. If you've tightened the nuts on the valve but it's still leaking, you may need to replace the valve. But first, remove the fittings completely and apply some pipe putty to the threads or wrap the threads with sealing tape. If the leak isn't in the valves or supply, the drain might be leaking. Fill the sink with water. Then, as the water drains, inspect every inch of piping connecting the sink to the wall, especially the slip joints (pictured). As previously, use some dry tissue or paper towel to wipe the outside of the pipes. If the paper gets wet, you've found your leak. For a slip joint, it may just be a matter of making sure it's aligned properly and that it's tight enough. If the joint still leaks, take it apart and apply pipe putty to the washer. If the leak is at the basket strainer, tighten the basket strainer to see if that stops the leak. If the basket strainer still leaks, take it apart and apply pipe putty.

Reoccurring Monthly Maintenance
Test Carbon Monoxide Detectors
WHAT: A carbon monoxide detector or CO detector is a device that detects the presence of the carbon monoxide gas to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
WHEN: Monthly
HOW: To test a carbon monoxide detector, hold down the “test” button until you hear two beeps sound off. Once you hear these beeps, release your finger off of the test button. Recreate this event, but this time hold down the test button until you hear four beeps. If the four beeps are heard, you know that a signal was sent to your monitoring station. After 10-15 minutes the CO alarm will return from test mode back to its original setting. If for some reason the device doesn’t return to its original setting, you’ll need to perform a power cycle.

Test Smoke Detectors
WHAT: A smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an indicator of fire.
WHEN: Monthly
HOW: This style of testing occurs when an operator simply clicks on the test button that is present on a smoke detecting device. Pressing this button alone will conduct a test. Once the button is pressed, a few seconds will pass before the test starts, but you’ll know the test in process whenever you begin to hear a loud, piercing siren that comes via the smoke detector.

Clean Garbage Disposal
WHAT: A garbage disposal unit is a device, usually electrically powered, installed under a kitchen sink between the sink's drain and the trap. The disposal unit shreds food waste into pieces small enough—generally less than 2 mm —to pass through plumbing.
WHEN: Monthly
HOW: Kosher salt is an effective abrasive cleaner that can adequately dislodge slimy residue. First, pour a large cup of ice cubes into the garbage disposal, switch it on while adding a half-cup of the salt. The ice and salt combination should grind away what remains of the odor-causing residue. This is yet another quick fix to a dirty drain using simple items that you already have in your freezer and pantry. For FULL instructions please check out this article HERE.

Run Water & Flush Toilets in Unused Spaces
WHAT: Run water and flush toilets. This helps prevent the buildup of grime. You will also refill the trap which blocks sewer gas from entering the home.
WHEN: Monthly
HOW: Run the water through unused faucets and shower/baths for 2 minutes. Also flush all unused toilets.
