Kaketsugi is a traditional Japanese fabric restoration technique used to repair holes, tears, or other damage in garments, especially fine fabrics like silk. It is often referred to as "invisible mending" because the goal is to make the repair indistinguishable from the original material.
The process involves weaving new threads into the damaged area by hand, carefully matching the fabric's original color, texture, and pattern. It requires immense skill, precision, and patience, making it a preferred method for restoring valuable clothing items such as kimonos or formal suits.
Kaketsugi is highly valued for preserving the appearance and longevity of garments, blending practicality with artistry.

I wanna make a longer post about how much like... how much labor there is taking place in the used clothing market that most people don't think/care about. But I have to sleep.
#idk why im so hot about this today but i truly genuinely am#short version: before claiming that something is overpriced try to take into account the following:#a lot more work. upfront cost. and time goes into reselling than you think.#its actually a skillset. and to get any real payout you have to treat it like a legit part time job#and if its a physical location that takes donations#a LOT of man hours go into sorting said donations. because people will just donate garbage straight up.#and then after the usable stuff is sorted out it's getting laundered (<- pretty much every second had store launders their clothes#you know how all goodwills smell the same? its because they all use the same detergent)#THEN each individual item needs to be organized & priced.#hours of work before its even put up for sale. and that also involves labor.#because you need people to actually put it out on the floor and ring it up and etc etc#lets not even get started on the admin hours involved if its a larger store#and if its a smaller store or an individual reseller there's a non-zero chance that they are also repairing and/or#altering items before they put them up for sale.#like sometimes the price really is about greed (the bastards of goodwill try to pull shit sometimes)#but often that's actually just what the item costs after processing

I promised y’all pictures of my vintage petticoat, and here it is!
There’s a lot going on with this thing, so let me point out some of the fascinating details I discovered. Let’s start by establishing that this thing has been altered! Multiple times! It’s actually hard to say how many times it has been altered, in fact.
The most obvious alteration is that the waistband has been let out:
Not only has it been let out, the button has been replaced at some point, because that button is very much Plastic TM, while the rest of this petticoat feels squarely Victwardian. Judging by the wear pattern on the waistband and the bits of stitching someone never bothered to fully remove, the button had also been repositioned multiple times! And this may just be a hunch, but I don’t think the buttonhole is original either. It’s not centered on the band and there are traces of a button or some other type of closure having been sewn to that side of the band at some point. The waistband has been sloppily felled on the inside and running stitched on the outside. The extension piece is also a completely different material from the rest of the petticoat. It looks like a cotton calico, whereas the rest of the petticoat, excluding the embroidered ruffle, is a very fine linen.
It has also been shortened and then lengthened again at some point. I can tell because these tucks at the hem are original, and they are machine-sewn:
But these tucks were sewn by hand:
And then, a little ways above those wider tucks are these three creases, still with a knotted thread tail left behind:
This tuck existed long enough to permanently crease the fabric and leave wear patterns!!
The lace ruffle isn’t actually the structural hem, either! It is original to the petticoat, however. You can see from the inside that it was basted on by hand, then machine sewn:
On the outside, the raw edge has been covered by a strip of the same linen as the rest of the petticoat, which I can’t show because image limit.
And finally, the seams were never finished! One edge is the fabric selvedge, and the other is a completely raw cut edge:
All these details add up to a very interesting picture. It’s my theory that this was a mass-produced garment. The base petticoat was made with the four narrow tucks and the faced hem, and the lace ruffle was added as a decorative finish that perhaps could have been swapped out for various styles. Perhaps this was a gift or was purchased for a younger girl who was too short to wear it at its original length, so it was tucked up a few times. Then, when she got taller or it was given to someone larger, one of the tucks was let out. Later on, perhaps yet another owner let the waistband out. What is clear is that this petticoat was much-loved and altered and repaired over and over throughout its life.
#pancake talks textiles#and now it has come to me#and i will be altering and repairing it for myself#adding my own threads to the tapestry of its life#i think it’ll be a perfect addition to my Glass Gown ensemble

Pippin is my favorite musical of all time.
But unfortunately, I seem to fixate on it during times of my life when my brain is especially existential, anxious, depressed, etc.
The last few days, I've been thinking about Pippin a lot, reading analyses of it, listening to the music. Just generally enjoying my comfort musical.
Then I remembered that earlier this week, my therapist heard me describing how I feel unfulfilled while unemployed and doing a lot of stuff for other people or to make other people happy and not doing anything for myself, all while having a completely messed up sleep schedule. And she said "Hmm... honestly... that sounds a little like depression."
And I was like "No. No. Because I am doing things. It's not like when I've been depressed in the past." but now that I'm back to fixating on Pippin, I think she was somewhat onto something since that's usually a bad sign. Yay!
#pippin#it's kind of sad that my comfort musical is pippin. but like. it's comforting for a reason. i need the comfort.#i'm currently being overworked by the theater i volunteer with because i was brought on to sew some pieces#and a couple turned into 6 pieces and then adding trims to other things and repairing a bunch of costumes#and completely deconstructing 2 different dresses to make them into new things#and then further alterations and tailoring and yeah this is not what i had signed up for#and how i need to learn to say no because i now have no time to do what i want to do with my free time#plus the jobs i've applied to have not gotten back to me and blah blah blah i'm doing nothing with my life at the moment#and past pippin obsessions have been senior year of high school when i had no clue what to do with my life#into freshman year of college when i was happier but still feeling strange about having no direction#then junior/senior year of college when i once again had no clue what i was doing with my life but about to graduate.#then one year post-college when i was considering leaving my job in the next year-ish to pursue theater#THEN during the really dark era of the quarantine in April just before May hit aka the lowest i've been in over a decade#literally crying every single day i was so stressed and anxious and depressed#and now. after a year of switching jobs. finally thinking i know what i want to do. and now having to actually do it.#while unemployed because my literal dream job that was supposed to last at least 4 months to a year only lasted 2 months
