what i miss about estonia is easy-ass access to all-purpose thrift stores where i could, with serious effort, cart home vintage furniture for ridiculously cheap prices. talking 'soviet era, 1st republic era and earlier era' furniture that people who are still gung ho for post-freedom capitalism dumped in those thrift stores for frankly understandable reasons. my shitty commie block apartment had two such thrift stores like 1km away from it.
but in belgium? now our rental is filled with ikea. we're now 'lowest middle class'. so now i'm trying my best to bring something old from my home and hometown with me in my carry-on every time to make this sterile, wood-pulp furniture filled place feel a bit less cold and nordic (i haaaaate nordic minimalism aesthetic).
i was thinking the other day though, what would happen if got the translation job i'm applying for in 5 months, because it'd mean a significant bump for my income. the answer is, i'd still probably just fish for cheap estonian reject textiles and furniture, and i'm probably going to use this ikea furniture for the rest of my life, or at least as long as it's not irreparably broken.
i'm usually cautious about stating what i definitely would or would not do, because you never know what you'll do until you have to do it. but looks like that even the promise of money won't really get me out of the 'frugal but not ascetic' mindset. you buy something, you use it until it's dead-dead.
and now i'm stuck with ikea furniture for the rest of my life, having to spruce it up with great-grandma's tatty doilies and reject sculptures. because i don't have access to even cheaper but sturdy vintage furniture, because this is belgium and i'm too scared to enter a furniture thrift store because a) i don't speak french and b) my car doesn't have enough space for me to bring that furniture home and c) you should see our townhouse apartment's public stairwell. it's narrow, and it winds.

Part one of my english diary
Dear Doggo,
Ever since I landed here on the 19th of december, I have noticed so much has changed over the years. because of the coronavirus my favorite places have changed so much. When we landed I immediately noticed that the airport and the surrounding roads were emptier than usual and weird. Anyway as usual we went to the car rental desk and got our car, of course it wasn't anything like the car we had reserved, but that's how this business works. The real shocker was when we had settled down in the city and the subsequent days after that, we noticed how the city was empty, there were free parking places normally where there wouldn't be. Almost ¾ of the businesses were temporarily closed or closed indefinitely. it made the city feel abandoned, if there wasn't a curfew at 10pm then the night life would be non-existent. the government here has put some really strict measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, which in my opinion has worked perfectly. although this place has almost the same population as estonia it has more than 5x less cases of coronavirus then estonia. the government here has enacted a mask mandate, and its one of the strictest i have heard of, you have to wear a mask wherever you go, even outside, of course there are some exceptions, like eating at a restaurant, there you can take off your mask if you have ordered drinks and/or food. Even though these exceptions exist, they haven't saved the vast majority of the restaurants, and the people’s mind set has also changed, its more of a hive-mind like mind set, a good example of this is when my family and i went to a small thai restaurant that had only one family sitting in it, so we decided to check it out. No later then 10 mins later because there was more than one family sitting there, the entire small restaurant was full, also all restaurants have to have their seats on the terrass or outside to be open to on-site eating. Although this vacation has been relaxing, my brain has been working on overdrive, for some reason I can't stop thinking about the universe and space, it’s one of those things that the human mind cant understand but we try to anyway. I have been trying to understand how humans would differ from plant to plant, if we colonize other planets, will humans evolve to their hostile environments over thousands of years or will they stay the same because we use our technology to keep a stable condition where we will live. I always wonder what I will think about next week, but my brain never does not manage to amaze me.

With Christmas Approaching, Here Are Some Travel Sites Accepting Crypto
Traveling for the Christmas holidays is something anyone would enjoy. Dealing with travel arrangements, however, can be a headache. For crypto enthusiasts, being able to pay for airplane tickets, hotel bookings and car rentals with cryptocurrency is a relief, because it’s convenient and it’s safe. Numerous travel sites accept digital coins these days.

How to Pay for Your Trip With Cryptocurrency
The travel industry, unlike other, more conservative sectors, has been relatively quick to realize the potential of crypto payments. Over the past few years, travel agencies accepting cryptocurrencies have been growing in number. There’s now about a dozen well-established travel websites that will gladly take your coins to arrange your trip. These accept most of the leading cryptos including bitcoin cash (BCH) and bitcoin core (BTC).
Cheapair is a pioneer in this business as it has been accepting cryptocurrency since 2013. You can now pay for flights and hotel stays using bitcoin core (BTC), bitcoin cash (BCH), litecoin (LTC), ethereum (ETH), and dash. You can book a flight for just about any destination and reserve a room at 200,000 hotels. Although few of them accept direct crypto payments, Cheapair.com makes it possible for you to use your digital coins to cover the bills.
Travala is also a popular option as it offers you the opportunity to book over 2,000,000 hotels and properties in more than 80,000 destinations globally, according to its website. It supports multiple payment methods including major credit cards, Paypal, and a choice of cryptocurrencies. The blockchain-powered booking platform accepts BCH, BTC, ETH, LTC and a number of other coins and tokens. Travala assures customers it will match or beat any competitor’s price through its Best Price Guarantee program.
If you need another website that processes payments in multiple digital currencies, you can check Bitcoin.Travel. Use it to search for flights, hotels, rentals and tours in top destinations around the world such as New York, London, Tokyo, and Sydney. The company behind the service is based in Poland and has been in operation since 2011. It currently takes seven cryptos: BCH, BTC, ETH, ETC, LTC, DASH and DOGE, and claims that it transfers your money to the host 24 hours after you check in.
Travelbybit is an online platform you can use to book hotels and flights using crypto. You can have the prices displayed in various fiat currencies including the U.S. dollar, euro, Chinese yuan and Indian rupee, while the available payment options also include BTC, LTC and BNB, Binance’s native token. The booking website is powered by the leading digital asset exchange.
Greitai is a booking platform specializing in low-cost flights, accommodation, and car rentals. It’s operated by the Vilnius-headquartered Interneto Partneris. The Lithuanian company maintains a network of websites offering services in 21 other countries in Europe. It supports a variety of payment methods depending on the market. In Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Slovakia and Georgia, Greitai takes half a dozen cryptocurrencies including BTC, ETH, and XRP.
More Than Just Tickets and Rooms
A travel site that’s available in multiple languages — over 30 — is Destinia. It offers a rich choice of services that go beyond airline tickets, hotel accommodation and car hire. Travelers can buy train tickets, rent apartments, and purchase ski packages as well. The Spain-based agency supports 72 currency options including several cryptocurrencies like bitcoin core, bitcoin cash, ethereum, eos, dash, and litecoin. You can pay with any of these coins but note that the prices are displayed in millibitcoins, mBTC, mBCH and so on.
Several travel companies accept crypto through integration with the U.S. payment processor Bitpay. That means you can book flights and pay for hotel stays with bitcoin cash (BCH) and bitcoin core (BTC). Britain-based Corporate Traveller specializes in business travel management services for companies that need travel arrangements for their employees, as many businesses around the world cannot afford to close for the holidays. Another U.K.-headquartered travel agency, Alternative Airlines, is working to introduce crypto payments for its customers in cooperation with the Swiss payments processor Utrust. The partnership was announced last week.
Airtreks is a booking platform that also uses the services of Bitpay. It helps clients who need travel itineraries that involve multi-stop and even round the world trips. Airbaltic, the flag carrier of Latvia, provides a great variety of fiat payment options including bank transfers, credit cards, payment processors like Paypal and Ideal, but it also takes BCH and BTC via Bitpay. Keep in mind that, according to its website, the cryptocurrency option is “only available for Basic tickets for flights booked at least five days ahead of the scheduled departure.” Bitpay is also among the listed payment methods on the German travel site Fluege.

Massive choir a place for Estonians to find identity, solace
During Estonia’s nearly 50 years of Soviet occupation, some traditional anthems and songs were banned or had their lyrics changed so singing them was an act of defiance. In the late 1980s, people intentionally sang the original versions of key songs at protests, and that defiance culminated in independence following their “Singing Revolution” in 1991. Read more here
Witnessing the massive choir at the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration brought several emotions for the participants. It was heartwarming to hear folk songs to be sang again and people united as one. Although many of the singers have not experienced the time when traditional anthems and songs were banned in the country, they have felt the emotions of freedom while singing. The celebration was a joyous moment for everyone – young and old - as they also saw the sea of blue, white and black flags fill the whole arena. May the festival continue to be a tradition of the Estonia in the next 100 more years.

Two Estonian Men Detained In $575 Million Crypto Fraud
Two Estonian men have been detained by the U.S. Department of Justice in Tallinn, Estonia, for their alleged involvement in a complex scheme based on the use of shell companies to conceal the proceeds of crypto fraud. $575 million is charged across the 18-count indictment. Both Sergei Potapenko and Ivan Turgin, both 37, duped victims into investing in a phoney cryptocurrency bank named Polybius Bank that failed to distribute dividends to investors by setting up fictitious equipment-rental contracts for a service called HashFlare. According to court filings, many people fell for the scams. Between 2015 and 2019, HashFlare was operational and is said to have generated $550 million in revenue. According to reports, the bitcoin mining equipment only used 1% of the computer power it claimed to have. Founded in 2017, Polybius raised $25 million, which was transferred to the defendants' other bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. from the Criminal Division in the Department of Justice, said: They tried to hide their ill-gotten gains in Estonian properties, luxury cars, and bank accounts and virtual currency wallets around the world. U.S. and Estonian authorities are working to seize and restrain these assets and take the profit out of these crimes. In addition to 75 properties, six high-end vehicles, and thousands of cryptocurrency mining equipment, the statement said that the money laundering scheme also involved these items. International Driving License France: What it is and how to get one
If you’re planning on driving in France or anywhere else abroad, it’s worth looking into an International Driving License French. That way you won’t end up in a sticky situation if your native drivers’ licence isn’t accepted by rental companies or the authorities.
If you’re planning on driving in France or anywhere else abroad, it’s worth looking into an International Driving License France. That way you won’t end up in a sticky situation if your native drivers’ licence isn’t accepted by rental companies or the authorities. So before you start driving abroad, here’s how you can apply for an International Driving Permit France (or IDP).Am I eligible for an International Drivers’ Licence? Yes, if you are over 18 years of age and have a legal drivers’ licence in your home country for more than six months.Keep in mind though that while you can get an IDP at 18, some rental car companies will not let you rent a car unless you are over 21.Where do I apply for an IDP? It’s easy to apply for one. If you’re a UK citizen, you can apply through the Post Office. If you’re American, you can apply through the websites of the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Canadians can apply through the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).Check in with the automobile association in your country in order to apply for your IDP. Do not buy your permit from anywhere other than an officially recognized permit-seller in your country, such as the above-noted automobile associations. Regardless of where you apply for your permit, in addition to the application form you’ll likely need:Two passport-sized photos A copy of your drivers’ licence A cheque for the application costs (around $20USD) Your International Driving Permit is valid for one year. You can’t apply for one more than three months before you intend to travel. However, you can also delay the start of your permit for up to three months if needed.Which countries require an International Driving Permit? There are three different types of permits available, and different countries may require different permits. If you’re going to be driving in the EU, here are the countries that accept the 1968 version of the IDP: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden. You may need the 1949 IDP for these countries: Cyprus, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, Spain. If you’re travelling through Liechtenstein, you may need a 1929 IDP.If you’re a UK citizen, you will not need an IDP to drive within EU or EEA countries for under 12 months. But if you’re thinking of driving in France after Brexit, or anywhere else in the European Union, it’s recommended you apply for an IDP due to all the uncertainty around the October 31, 2019 leave date. If the UK leaves the European Union without an exit deal, international driving rights for UK citizens will likely change. If you’re a European citizen looking to visit North American countries such as the United States, you may also need an IDP.What happens if I drive in a foreign country without an IDP? You may be fined or even have your car confiscated, depending on the country. If you’re driving a rental car, the rental company will charge you the cost of releasing the vehicle from the police.

E-scooter firms get the green light to start trials of up to one year on UK streets
In light of COVID-19 and social distancing regulations, the UK has been working on making it easier for people to get from point A to B in cities without resorting to buses and trains or bringing more cars to congested roads, and today that strategy took an interesting leap forward.
The country’s Department for Transportation today announced that it would start allowing e-scooters, by way of e-scooter rental companies, to legally operate across the country initially in a trial phase starting no later than August. Councils and other authorities, including across London and other major cities, are working on putting together trials that could run for as long as 12 months under guidelines provided by the government.
The regulations come into force on July 4, the DfT said, with the first trials expected to begin a week later.
“As we emerge from lockdown, we have a unique opportunity in transport to build back in a greener, more sustainable way that could lead to cleaner air and healthier communities across Great Britain,” said Transport Minister Rachel Maclean in a statement. “E-scooters may offer the potential for convenient, clean and cost-effective travel that may also help ease the burden on the transport network, provide another green alternative to get around and allow for social distancing. The trials will allow us to test whether they do these things.”
There are some restrictions in place: e-scooters will not be able to go faster than 15.5 miles per hour, and they will only be able to use roads and cycle lanes, not sidewalks or other areas reserved for pedestrians. Users will need a drivers license (full or provisional). The scooters themselves will not need to be registered as vehicles but will need insurance. And as with bicycles, users will be recommended — but not required — to wear helmets.
It seems that privately-owned e-scooters will not be included in the rule relaxation, but it’s not clear what steps regulators will take — if any — to avoid the cluttering that we have seen in some cities overrun with too many dock-less scooters crowding sidewalks.
The list of e-scooter hopefuls is long. From the word go, those that are looking to operate in the UK include Bird, Bolt (the ridesharing startup out of Estonia), Tier, Neuron Mobility, Lime, Voi, and Zipp Mobility.
We’re contacting the DfT with our questions and will update this post as we learn more.
Electric scooters will now join the ranks of other shared transportation options that include bikes and e-bikes, as a complement to mass transit and of course walking or using your own non-autonomotive wheels as an alternative to using cars. E-scooters have been seen both as an alternative for short distances (between 1 and 5 miles) but also as a last-mile solution in combination with
The news today lifts restrictions that had previously been in place that classified e-scooters as motor vehicles and therefore required the e-scooters to be licensed and taxed, and for operators to have licenses to use them.
Those rules also meant that the e-scooters were illegal to use on sidewalks, with the only exception to all that being legal usage across select (and very limited) campuses on private land.
The moves comes on the heels of a consultation in March to pilot e-scooter use in three regions of the UK, along with a number of other initiatives including e-cargo carriers and using drones to transport medical supplies — the aim being to explore in quick order a number of new technologies to expand transportation options available to consumers, as well as essential businesses and the people who work in them.
The bigger trend has seen other cities also looking to relax rules to improve transportation options to people who wish to socially distance but still need to get around urban areas in ways that are quicker than walking. New York City is also expected to unveil its own roadmap for e-scooter pilots in the near future.
The news made official today had been something of a badly-kept secret, specifically among transportation startups whose businesses have been in a holding pattern waiting for the regulator to ease up on restrictions that had been in place.
Just about all of those startups have been sending out alerts to journalists for over a week now with comments on government’s widely-expected announcements.
“We welcome the DfT’s announcement and are excited to be one step closer to the starting the e-scooter trials,” said Zachary Wang, CEO of Neuron Mobility, in a statement. “We are already in discussions with quite a few councils, as no two towns or cities are the same we look forward to partnering with them to safely introduce e-scooters in a way that best suits their individual needs. COVID-19 has led to a fundamental rethink of the way we travel and e-scooters have the potential to radically improve how we get around our towns and cities. We are delighted that people in the UK will soon be able to benefit from shared e-scooters, they will allow people to continue social distancing while also providing a more efficient travel option than gas-guzzling alternatives.”
Some have been waiting for a chance to operate for some time.
“We welcome today’s announcement from the Government as it looks to get cities moving again safely and in an environmentally friendly way,” said Roger Hassan, COO of TIER Mobility, in a statement. “We already have more than 1,000 of our industry leading scooters in our UK warehouse, ready to be deployed and we will be shipping more over very soon. Everyone at TIER is looking forward to working with the Government and with local authorities to make e-scooters in the UK a huge success story.”
While there had been restrictions in place before now, I should point out that they were often badly enforced: in London there have always been some private e-scooter owners zooming around alongside bikes and cars on the roads, and I’ve even stopped at red lights on my bike, with an e-scooter on one side of me, and a policeman on the other, and not a word gets exchanged, just a simple shrug of “what can you do?” So decriminalising, as it has done in other industries, will hopefully mean better oversight, alongside better choice for users.
