🧲 - Magnetic Marvels: Researchers Flip the Switch on Depression
1. New Zealand Government announces prescriptions charges will be free.
Tumblr media
The $5 prescription fee at pharmacies will be scrapped in July. This is set to save about 3 million people a year money, and in particular 770,000 people aged over 65. It will make most prescriptions in New Zealand free.
Free access to medicines is also hoped to ease pressure on the over-burdened health system by helping people get medicines sooner.
2. Platypuses return to Sydney's Royal National Park after disappearing for decades
Tumblr media
Platypuses have been relocated to the Royal National Park in Sydney, after they disappeared from the park's waterways about 50 years ago. A joint project by the University of New South Wales, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the World Wildlife Fund has reintroduced five females to the Hacking River, with a group of males to follow next week.
3. 74-year-old musician Otis Taylor gets Denver high school diploma decades after being expelled for hair

A musician who was expelled from a Denver high school over 50 years ago received his diploma. Otis Taylor was kicked out of Manual High School in 1966 because of his hair. This was decades before laws ending racial hair discrimination. Denver Public Schools wanted to right a wrong.
4. Researchers treat depression by reversing brain signals traveling the wrong way (with magnets)
Tumblr media
A new study led by Stanford Medicine researchers is the first to reveal how magnetic stimulation treats severe depression: by correcting the abnormal flow of brain signals. Powerful magnetic pulses applied to the scalp to stimulate the brain can bring fast relief to many severely depressed patients for whom standard treatments have failed.
The FDA-cleared treatment, known as Stanford neuromodulation therapy, incorporates advanced imaging technologies to guide stimulation with high-dose patterns of magnetic pulses that can modify brain activity related to major depression. Compared with traditional TMS, which requires daily sessions over several weeks or months, SNT works on an accelerated timeline of 10 sessions each day for just five days.
5. Electricity generation through solar, wind and water exceeded total demand in mainland Spain on Tuesday, a pattern that will be repeated more and more in the future
Tumblr media
The Spanish power grid on Tuesday tasted an appetizer of the renewable energy banquet that is expected to flourish in the coming years. For nine hours, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., the generation of green electricity was more than enough to cover 100% of Spanish peninsular demand, a milestone that had already been reached on previous occasions, but not for such a prolonged period.
6. RI Senate passes bill making lunch free at all public schools
Tumblr media
Free lunch for all public school students in Rhode Island is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Tuesday night the Rhode Island Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill by a vote of 31-4 that would do just that. If the companion bill in the House were to pass, that takes effect July 1. The bill would make breakfast and lunch free for all public school students in the state, regardless of their household income.
7. Critically endangered red wolf pups born at North Carolina Zoo
The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro celebrated the arrival of “not one but TWO litters” of the world’s most endangered wolf – the red wolf – in late April and early May.
A total of nine pups were born – three to parents Marsh and Roan, and six to Denali and May – the zoo announced on May 9.

bakuiida coffee shop soulmate immortality au
If everything was written in the stars then the stars hated Katsuki Bakugo. They’d cursed his immortal existence with a soulmate so dreadful he went out of his way to avoid him for millennia. Unfortunately this was a life time he’d been cursed to share. He thought it’d be a simple matter of showing up in an American city with a new name (Leo Amarillo) and working in a coffee shop, but one day a business suit of a man walked in baring the name Theodore Christian entered Denver Bean and Brew.
“Hello…Leo,” he said jovially, reading the barista’s name tag. Tenya Iida’s bore the same smile that had once traveled the Silk Road, and the eyes that had met Katsuki’s as Rome was set ablaze. No horrible plague or great war could change that.
“Hello annoying man in my place of work, what’ll it be?” Sighing, Katsuki tried to not run his nails over the patch on his wrist, no matter how little he could stand the guy, his soulmate did get his omega more wound up than a bobbin of thread.
Letting out a light chuckle, the alpha eyed the menu,”let’s see, is the matcha any good here, I haven’t had a good one since I left Japan.”
“I’m half Japanese, will it taste more authentic if I spit in it?” Katsuki had yet to decide if he’d actually spit in the drink, surely it was deserved after that debacle in Babylon.
There it was, the laugh that had been making Katsuki shiver since before the pyramids were built. Maybe if they spent more time together the blonde would always be trying to coax it from the man. “Now does it cost more with your saliva?” He seemed entirely unopposed to the idea.
“Since you’ve been so kind, I’ll spit in your drink for free~” giggling…no. Not giggling, Katsuki didn’t giggle. To distract himself he started typing the the order,”one matcha latte, that’ll be $5.47.”
“Yeowch, that’s what I get getting a beverage by my work,” taking out a fancy looking debit card, he paid and typed in his name for the order.
“Theodore Christian?” He asked in a teasing tone, though it wasn’t the worst name Tenya had ever come up with for himself.
Scrunching his nose, the man shook his head,”Hey, at least my name isn’t a zodiac sign followed by a color in Spanish,” he really was much sassier than he let on.
Starting to make the drink, Katsuki pummeled the man mentally, but kept up his customer service face plastered on, humming as he worked. “Where does a suit like you earn a living these days?” He knew Tenya had always liked an office job since the invention of offices.
“I’m a projects manager for the Colorado Renewable Energy Corporation,” the alpha followed from behind the counter, watching as milk was steaming and a bag of matcha procured.
“Now don’t hiss at me, we only have this powder, probably not the most authentic,” there was a faint smile on his face as Katsuki used the bamboo whisk to stir powder into boiled water. His eyes on his task, he tried not to notice the eyes on his back.
A faint tapping came from the counter as Tenya fingers played across the wooden surface, a little Mozart about the place. “However will I live?” He said in a bit of drama that would put Shakespeare to shame.
“If necessary I can take you out back and put you down, but who would project manage nuclear energy or whatever it is you do?” Transferring the matcha and milk to a medium sized to go cup.
“It’s renewable energy, and despite what some say, nuclear energy is not renewable. Besides those spent fuel rods are a horrible pollutant on our planet,” little rant out of the way, Tenya looked down at his drink,”is it done?”
After looking at him for a moment and checking that every other patron of the sparsely populated cafe was distracted with their own lives, Katsuki made good on his earlier threats before placing the lid on the cup and handing it to him. “Enjoy!”
“Tastes like home,” was all Tenya responded with before heading towards the door, slipping something into the tip jar that would later turn out to be a fifty dollar bill and a lovers eye brooch, the exact one Katsuki had worn throughout his adventure in Victorian England. Not to mention the part where he’d stabbed the other man with it, and told him to never speak to him again. Apparently never was about 138 years.

Excerpt from this story from Nation of Change:
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Chris Wright, CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy, as the next Secretary of Energy, raising alarm among environmentalists and climate advocates. Wright, a prominent figure in the fossil fuel industry and a major Republican donor, has long advocated for the continued use of oil and gas as essential energy sources. His nomination signals a clear pivot in U.S. energy policy, prioritizing fossil fuel production over renewable energy initiatives.
Chris Wright has built his career in the energy sector, leading Liberty Energy, a company specializing in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, for oil and natural gas extraction. Wright is also a board member of a modular nuclear reactor company and has worked in various energy fields, including nuclear, solar, and geothermal. However, his staunch advocacy for fossil fuels has defined his public persona.
Wright describes himself as “a lifelong environmentalist” and has acknowledged that “climate change is a real problem.” Yet, in 2023, he dismissed the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy, claiming, “There is no such thing as clean energy or dirty energy” and “there is no climate crisis and we’re not in the midst of an energy transition either.” These statements reflect his skepticism toward mainstream scientific consensus on climate change and its connection to extreme weather events.
His industry ties extend to influential figures like Harold Hamm, the Oklahoma fracking billionaire and Trump adviser, who called Wright “a really, really sharp individual” and championed his nomination. Wright has publicly argued that fossil fuels are indispensable for global development, stating in a 2023 interview with CNBC, “The world runs on oil and gas, and we need that.”
Trump’s nomination of Wright aligns with his campaign promises to boost fossil fuel production beyond the record levels achieved under the Biden administration. Trump has also announced the formation of a new Council of National Energy, which will oversee energy permitting, production, and regulation. Doug Burgum, the nominee for Secretary of the Interior, will chair the council.
In a statement announcing Wright’s nomination, Trump praised him as “a leading technologist and entrepreneur in Energy” and credited him with launching “the American Shale Revolution that fueled American Energy Independence and transformed the Global Energy Markets and Geopolitics.”
The nomination has been met with polarized reactions. Industry leaders have celebrated Wright’s appointment as a victory for energy independence and market stability. Environmental groups, however, have condemned the decision, warning of its potential impact on climate change mitigation efforts and clean energy development.
Tiernan Sittenfeld, senior vice president for government affairs at the League of Conservation Voters, described the appointment as “not surprising but still appalling.” Similarly, Jackie Wong, senior vice president for climate and energy at the Natural Resources Defense Council, called Wright’s nomination “a disastrous mistake.” Wong emphasized, “The Energy Department should be doing all it can to develop and expand the energy sources of the 21st century, not trying to promote the dirty fuels of the last century.”
Patrick Donnelly, Great Basin director at the Center for Biological Diversity, expressed concern that Trump’s administration would become “the oiliest administration since George W. Bush.”

FIVE BOLD NBA PREDICTIONS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON
Five Bold NBA Predictions for the Remainder of the Season
January 14, 2025
The NBA season is heating up, and as playoff contention tightens, surprising twists and turns are on the horizon. Here are five bold predictions for how the rest of the 2025 season could unfold.
1. Detroit Pistons Will Advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals
After years of rebuilding, the Pistons are poised to surprise the league. Cade Cunningham’s All-Star-level play, combined with the toughness of Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren, has provided Detroit with a foundation that’s both gritty and dynamic. Malik Beasley and Tim Hardaway Jr. are hitting threes at a lethal rate, adding a critical outside dimension to the Pistons’ attack.
Though they’re still seen as underdogs, their current momentum could lead to an upset against any team not named the Cleveland Cavaliers. If their young core plays with discipline, Detroit might very well find themselves in the second round or, improbably, the Eastern Conference Finals.
2. Boston Celtics Will Stop Cleveland Cavaliers’ Finals Dreams
While the Cavaliers have dominated much of the season and look like strong contenders, Boston’s experience gives them the edge. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have taken the painful lessons of past playoff losses to heart, much like other eventual champions before them.
Add the Celtics’ balanced roster, including Derrick White and Jrue Holiday, and Cleveland’s lack of playoff-tested depth becomes a concern. The Celtics are well-equipped to grind out victories, making them favorites to edge the Cavs in a potential matchup.
3. Russell Westbrook Will Deliver a Legendary Playoff Performance
Russell Westbrook’s resurgence with the Denver Nuggets has been one of the most captivating storylines this season. As Jokic’s pick-and-roll partner, Westbrook has found his groove, averaging impressive numbers while bringing a burst of energy to Denver’s rotation.
Expect a jaw-dropping 30-point, 10-assist, and 10-rebound performance in a crucial playoff game. Westbrook’s ability to thrive under pressure and his renewed confidence make this not just possible but likely against a formidable opponent.
4. Lonzo Ball Will Shine in the Play-In Tournament
After a long and arduous recovery, Lonzo Ball’s return to action could serve as the emotional spark Chicago needs. Should the Bulls find themselves in a play-in game, expect Lonzo to shine brightly, inspired by his brothers’ success off the court and his own journey back to form.
Whether it’s knocking down threes, dishing precision assists, or locking down on defense, Lonzo’s contributions will be pivotal, even if Chicago doesn’t progress far. His performance will solidify his value as a leader and motivator.
5. A Cavs vs. Thunder Finals Will Mark the Lowest-Watched Series Ever
While both teams have the talent to reach the Finals, their relative lack of superstar marketability could hurt viewership. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Donovan Mitchell are undeniable stars, but they don’t yet have the mainstream appeal of LeBron James or Stephen Curry.
Moreover, the NBA has struggled to build new icons, with SGA lacking a signature shoe and Mitchell overshadowed by the likes of Anthony Edwards in the Adidas lineup. Purists will enjoy the series, but casual fans might tune out, preferring the narrative of proven champions or established dynasties.
Conclusion The NBA thrives on unpredictability, and this season is no exception. From Detroit’s underdog rise to the potential viewing challenges of new-market Finals contenders, these bold predictions capture the drama and excitement of the league. Whether or not these scenarios come to fruition, one thing’s for sure: the rest of the season will be a wild ride.

KORE EVERHART is TWENTY EIGHT years old, potrayed by Aslihan Malbora and her secret is, she is the reincarnation of persephone
Bio:
Kore Everhart’s life has always been intertwined with nature’s unpredictable forces. Born in Thera, Greece, to her turkish mother and greek father, Kore was drawn to the rhythms of the seasons and the ever-changing weather. What she didn’t realize was that her connection to the elements ran deeper than most—she is the reincarnation of Persephone, the goddess of the seasons and Queen of the Underworld.
Growing up, Kore experienced vivid dreams and an inexplicable connection to the world’s cycles of life and death, yet she didn’t fully understand these feelings until later in life. Fascinated by the natural world, she pursued meteorology, moving countries and earning a doctorate in atmospheric science at MIT. Her research on climate change and extreme weather quickly gained recognition, but it was her uncanny ability to predict weather shifts with precision that made her truly stand out. She could sense changes in the atmosphere before advanced technology could detect them, an intuition she couldn’t explain but always felt deep within her.
At 28, Kore is a respected meteorologist and climate advocate in Denver, where she focuses on understanding the delicate balance of ecosystems and studying the impact of environmental changes. Though she uses data and technology in her work, she knows that the power of nature runs deeper than logic alone. She struggles with the pull of her divine origins—like Persephone, she experiences a deep sadness during the colder months, followed by a burst of energy and joy as the world warms and life blooms.
Her dual nature as both a scientist and a goddess makes her a unique voice in environmental conservation, advocating for the Earth’s protection while grappling with her connection to life, death, and rebirth. Kore’s quiet power draws others to her, and she serves as a healer and guide, helping people navigate both natural and personal storms.
Though she’s still learning to reconcile her two identities, Kore knows her purpose is greater than her scientific work. Like Persephone, she is a bridge between two worlds, and she is determined to protect the Earth, guiding it—and its people—through cycles of destruction and renewal.

Tumblr media
Happy New Year 2024! I'm excited about the beginning of a new opportunity for "we humans" to get it right this year and do all, or at least SOME of the many important things needed to sustain Life on Earth, starting with ending the wars and genocides raging all over our planet and continuing on to making the swiftest transition possible to renewable energy and getting off fossil fuels. It was good to see the family members who were able to make it to our New Year's Day brunch today. It has become a bit of a tradition and sometimes we have a lot of family members, and sometimes only a few, but most of the time, like today, our cousin, Debbie and her family, at least some of them, are here.
Tumblr media
I had fun preparing the food for brunch, especially the breakfast food, because Hobie likes it so much. Pancakes, hash-browns, scrambled or fried eggs, bacon or sausage, and sometimes eggs Benedict, if I decide to make that, are his favorite foods and he'll eat them anytime, morning, noon, or night. Since Katie and I are vegan (although I do occasionally eat cage free, pasture raised eggs), I also made vegan pancakes and oatmeal with cranberries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm glad Larisa is doing better since she had her knee surgery, but she still has some pain and they are concerned she may have scar tissue build-up and might need another surgery. I hope not! I was thrilled that Nick could be there because he's in the Army Reserve and he spends one weekend a month "playing army" to keep his skills up, so we don't see him much. He's working in the hospitality industry again, which means working in a bar, until he decides whether he'll make a career of the military or go to college. I hope he chooses the latter. Debbie's son, Sean, who also is a waiter in a small restaurant in Denver, couldn't be with us AGAIN, because he works most of the time.
Tumblr media
After we ate we opened gifts together, which Maple like a lot, because she likes tearing the wrapping paper off and taking all the paper out of the bags, no matter whose gift it is!
Tumblr media
Larisa and Nick are like siblings to Hobie and I'm happy we have had such a close relationship over the years. Most of the rest of our family is in the mid-west and on the east coast, and we don't see them that often, so our Colorado family is very important to us.
Tumblr media
By the end of the afternoon I was ready for a nap, so after I cleaned up, I took a LONG one! It was nice to have some quiet time with Bruce, them do a little meditating before making dinner. My plans for this year include focusing more on maintaining my health and well-being, because I'm no spring chicken and I need time to rest and recover from our busy lives.

Imaginations Fly Over North Carolina’s “Fairy Circles” of Hydrogen. (Sierra Club)
Tumblr media
Excerpt from this story from Sierra Club:
Many people are drawn to eastern North Carolina by the aroma of its legendary vinegar-based barbecue. Geoffrey Ellis admits that pulled pork was a big perk of his February trip to the region. But officially, the research geologist with the US Geological Survey had traveled south of Fayetteville in pursuit of a target with no smell at all: hydrogen gas.
While hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, it’s also 14 times lighter than air and easily escapes into space. That makes it extremely rare in Earth’s atmosphere, present at an average of just .5 parts per million. Nearly all the hydrogen used for fuel and industrial processes is made artificially, either by reacting methane gas with steam or breaking down water through electrolysis.
Yet Ellis knew that in 2012, an international research team led by the geochemist Viacheslav Zgonnik had visited North Carolina and found much higher levels of hydrogen, hundreds or thousands of parts per million, around the unusual geological features known locally as Carolina bays. These shallow, oval, often swampy depressions, the largest up to five miles across, have long intrigued geologists and the general public alike. In the US, they stretch in a sporadic band along the East Coast from the Florida-Georgia border up to New Jersey. Similar features are present all over the world, including Russia, Brazil, and Australia.
Scientists aren’t entirely sure how the bays form, Ellis says. Hypotheses include the warming of permafrost after the last ice age, the action of strong winds over many centuries, and the melting of icy fragments from exploded comets. Popular names for the features, like “fairy circles” and “witch rings,” often ascribe more supernatural origins. The elevated hydrogen readings added to the mystery, and Ellis wanted to see if North Carolina’s bays still harbored the gas a decade after Zgonnik’s measurements.
The concentrations Ellis detected were the same or even higher than before—the first evidence of long-term, naturally occurring hydrogen seepage in the United States. “The trends were very consistent,” Ellis says. “I was surprised; I expected that we would see more variability over time. To be honest, I don’t really know what that means.”
Zgonnik is less cautious in his interpretation. He sees the bays as markers of potentially massive resources trapped below the surface, just waiting to transform the world’s energy economy.
“We’re dealing with a long-lasting flow of hydrogen,” Zgonnik asserts. “If it is long lasting, it means that we can, by installing the right system, capture this flow, harvest this hydrogen, and open the pathway for a new source of energy.”
Even a decade ago, the idea that Earth held commercially meaningful quantities of hydrogen was considered scientifically dubious at best. Those who touted hydrogen as a clean fuel—it produces only water when burned—regarded it as a secondary energy source that would have to be produced using renewable or nuclear power to avoid carbon emissions.
But proof of concept for harvesting the gas has existed since 2012, when a village in Mali began tapping a hydrogen well to power its electricity generation. Subsequent findings in North Carolina and elsewhere have stirred a new wave of excitement about what’s now called geologic, “white,” or “gold” hydrogen. The Denver-based company Koloma recently raised $245 million in venture capital to search for geologic hydrogen, while the US Department of Energy awarded $20 million in grants toward research on the topic in February.
The technology used to extract hydrogen looks similar to that used for fossil fuels like methane gas and oil, says Zgonnik, whose company Natural Hydrogen Energy LLC drilled America’s first exploratory well in Nebraska. Unlike the limited deposits of those resources, however, he believes that geologic hydrogen represents a continuous flow. “Solar energy is the flux of photons from the sun. Wind energy is the flux of the air,” he says. In our case, we are dealing with the flux of hydrogen from the depths, which I believe will be a significant contributor to the renewable energy mix.”

Is Colorado Real Estate Investor Friendly?
The Colorado real estate market has garnered significant attention, especially from investors looking to capitalize on the state’s thriving economy and diverse landscapes. But is Colorado real estate truly investor-friendly? In this article, we’ll explore why Colorado has become a top destination for real estate investors and whether the state’s market conditions favor long-term, sustainable investments.
Why Investors Are Drawn to Colorado Real Estate
Thriving Economy and Job Growth
Colorado’s robust economy is one of the key factors making it attractive to investors. With a strong presence in industries like tech, aerospace, and renewable energy, the state has seen consistent job growth. Cities like Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins are hubs for innovation, leading to a growing population and increased demand for housing. According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, the state has maintained one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation, making it an ideal market for rental properties.
Population Growth Drives Demand
Colorado has experienced a steady population increase over the last decade. U.S. Census Bureau data shows that Colorado’s population grew by 14.5% between 2010 and 2020, adding over 700,000 residents. This growing population has led to higher housing demand, which is a significant advantage for real estate investors.
Whether you’re interested in long-term rentals, short-term vacation properties, or commercial investments, there is a broad range of opportunities to explore within Colorado real estate.
