1. The Reyes-Lorenz Family
Ramona's ex-husband didn't believe his lightskin kids were his and forced her into three paternity tests. Obviously they all came back positive and the kids were his, but Ramona got fed up with him and divorced him. He still calls and begs for her, but she's moved on. She even keeps proof of the paternity tests up on her bedroom wall, just to be petty. He took 'whose damn white baby is that??' too far.

2. The Rendon Family
Lenora is determined to improve her family's life despite living in poverty. Balancing multiple jobs, she tirelessly works to provide for her children, instilling in them the values of hard work and resilience. Every day is a struggle, but Lenora remains hopeful and resourceful, seeking out educational opportunities and community support to pave a better future for her family. Her unwavering love and dedication inspire her children to dream big, even in the face of adversity.

3. Thriftie Sisters
These two foster sisters live WAY below their means. After aging out of the system, they decided they didnt need family and only needed each other, so they set out to make a life together as sisters. Everything they owned once belonged to a yard sale or a dumpster. They never had to pay for anything aside from thrifting cheap clothes and paying rent. They love and value everything they own - everything that was once abandoned. Another mans trash truly is another womans treasure! *these girls are from the gallery, I just gave them slight makeovers*

Character Solidifying: 20-25 for Casey, 32-37 for Caleb, and maybe the last 5 questions for Ryn?
from this prompt list
Thank you so much for asking!!!
Casey MacKinnon-Theirin
20. What were the most deeply impressive political or social, national or international, events that they experienced?
Well, safe to say the Blight.  She’s about three or four at the time of it, so she has some vague memories of it, plus she hears stories from her parents and their friends, as well as Fergus and her uncle in Highever.  She is very aware of the events instigated by Rendon Howe at Highever - again, through those same sources.  In fact, when she is older, she asks her mother some specifics about it because for the first part of the Blight, Serafina is in occupied Highever.
21. What are your character’s manners like? What is their type of hero? Whom do they hate?
Casey is very well mannered for the most part; as a child, she is subject to the behaviors of a child, of course, which are as unpredictable as they are varied.  Her parents introduce her to the Hero of Ferelden - for a man who has the word in his ‘name,’ she tends to think of the Wardens as her ‘typical’ hero, though she is well aware that her Mama and Uncle Sean and Fergus are heroes in their own right, too.  Casey doesn’t really discover what true hatred of a person can be until she is an adult.  I’m not going to go into details on that right now as it is part of a plot line that will include her in the stories.
22. Who are their friends? Lovers? ‘Type’ or ‘ideal’ partner?
Oh boy, you really want me to think of her as an adult, don’t you?! lol  Let me see ... she has a group of friends (fellow pages/squires) when she is training at Highever with whom she is close.  As for lovers (I seriously haven’t given this any thought at all yet!), I suppose her ‘idea’ is someone who treats her as an equal, who respects her (as she will them) and with whom she is comfortable.  Her ideas of ‘perfect’ relationships are the ones she sees around her - her Mama and Alistair, her Uncle Sean and Aunt Josie (they’ve known one another since they were kids and always knew they’d end up together), Teyrn Fergus and his wife, etc.  I think she’d use those as ‘guidelines,’ if you will in what she looks for.  As to what she actually finds, that will have to wait and see!
23. What do they want from a partner? What do they think and feel of sex?
For the first part of this question, see the previous one.  When she’s older, Casey wants to have a long term relationship with someone, definitely, and she knows sex will be a part of that.  As for her specific thoughts about it, again will have to wait. (that’s something I need to think about more in specific terms of when I know who she’ll be with!)
24. What social groups and activities does your character attend? What role do they like to play? What role do they actually play, usually?
Casey is the ‘observer’ most of the time in a group.  She’s a people watcher, basically.  She’s pretty good at figuring them out based off body language and things like that.  Like her mother, she’s the lone rogue of her group, and because of some of the specific training her mother gives her from a very young age, she has a bit of an edge in that department.  There are times she likes to be the leader in the group, but those times are rare and far between, and  usually only in a closed sort of setting (like her mother and uncle, Casey and her friends like to gather down at the Cove and have bonfires without anyone else around)
25. What are their hobbies and interests?
Casey loves to read, sing and perform.  Outside of that, her grandmother (who is also in Highever when she’s there) teaches her how to knit, though she is bad at it.  At some point in her life in Denerim (before going to Highever), she spends some time during visits (either in Denerim or up at Vigil’s Keep) with the Grey Wardens and Nathaniel teaches her how to carve things out of wood.  Surprisingly, this is something she takes a liking to, and she becomes quite good at it over the years.  Figures, decorative pieces that can be turned into jewelry, etc.  It’s only later and a passing comment by her Uncle Sean that she recalls her great grandfather used to make instruments in a similar manner.
Caleb Shepard
32. How does your character react to stress situations? Defensively? Aggressively? Evasively?
Caleb learns early on to compartmentalize things.  Life is all about survival.  He doesn’t recall his life before he was about age 6, and when he joins the Reds, the tactic comes in handy, especially if things go bad.  More than once he’s watched someone he considers a close friend die right in front of him.  This training is something that follows him through into his military years.  Only once or twice does he have difficulty shutting away his thoughts/feelings because of it.
33. Do they drink? Take drugs? What about their health?
Caleb will drink occasionally - usually beer (if it’s Guinness) or whiskey.  Drugs are out of the question (it will tie in with his Reds experiences).  His health, outside of the punishment he is dealt on a daily basis as a soldier, is pretty good.
34. Does your character feel self-righteous? Revengeful? Contemptuous?
In a way (and he and Thane have long conversations about this during the hunt for the Collectors), he is very similar to Thane in the way he views himself.  He is a highly trained weapon.  Unlike Thane, he has a bit more leeway in deciding when to implement and utilize that.  I wouldn’t say he’s self-righteous or revengeful or even contemptuous.  However, afterr the Reaper War, he will have to face certain things that might well change that ...
35. Do they always rationalize errors? How do they accept disasters and failures?
Colin.  Nora.  Brennan.  Aoife. // Akuze.  Virmire.  Thessia.  These are some of the biggest ‘disasters’ and ‘failures’ in his life.  He takes them hard.  VERY hard, and never really gets over them.  As he gets older, the longer he serves in the Alliance, he learns to hide them better.  He and Kaidan will actually argue about this at some point in their stories. (I’ll wait and let the rest play out then)
36. Do they like to suffer? Like to see other people suffering?
This is an interesting quesiton.  Caleb doesn’t like to suffer, no.  Will he?  If it means someone else won’t have to, sure.  But suffering for the sake of suffering?  Nope.  Not his style.
37. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot?
He is a son of Ireland - of course he has a sense of imagination!  I wouldn’t say he daydreams a lot - maybe once in a while, but very rarely.  Still, he loves the stories and poems and music of his native land and especially once he leaves the Alliance after the War, he will see what he can do about ‘reclaiming’ some of that in his life.
Ryn Bailey
46. Is your character tall? Short? What about size? Weight? Posture? How do they feel about their physical body?
Kathryn Bailey is a biotic, a Vanguard to be specific, so her metabolism has always been on her side as far as that’s concerned.  She’s about 5â€Č6 - 5â€Č8 or so; pretty average height for a woman, perhaps a bit taller than usual.  (Reyes doesn’t mind, trust me! ;) )  She isn’t an overly physical person outside of her Alliance training.  In other words, she isn’t an athlete or into physical exercise really.  She’s pretty satisfied with herself, truth be told, and that was BEFORE she met Reyes (and oh yes, he approves! lol)
47. Do they want to project an image of a younger, older, more important person? Does they want to be visible or invisible?
Ryn sees her self as an ‘average’ human woman.  Given her training, she likes to blend into a crowd rather than be seen, and she does that pretty well.  Even within Reyes’ group, she’s there, the others know she’s there, but she can be in the same room as everyone else and people will ask, “Where’s Ryn?”  That’s what I mean by ‘blend in.’
48. How are your character’s gestures? Vigorous? Weak? Controlled? Compulsive? Energetic? Sluggish?
Um ... when she’s in biotic mode?  Definitely energetic.  She is, overall, a pretty controlled person.  “Weak” or “Sluggish” only comes into play if Reyes has been teasing her recently. LOL
49. What about voice? Pitch? Strength? Tempo and rhythm of speech? Pronunciation? Accent?
Pretty average.  She and her twin both grew up in the Midwest US (Chicago area) and have a pretty plain way of speaking, no accent really.  She’s not a shouter unless she’s in the heat of battle and then adrenaline can do a number on her!  She might occasionally get into a situation where she’s caught too far off guard by a situation and it’s obvious in her voice, but that’s only happened once to her that she can remember, and that was when Reyes found out the truth about her.  He got over it, and so did she. :P
50. What are the prevailing facial expressions? Sour? Cheerful? Dominating?
I’d say probably closest to cheerful.  She and her twin learned to be pretty independent from a young age and especially after their parents split up, but they always had each other.  Even now, 600+ years away from the Milky Way, things in Andromeda falling apart around her, she’s practical, but always seems to have a smile on her face when the going gets tough.

Select L.A. County Races - November 2018
Select L.A. County Races
Broadly speaking: vote for the Democrat. I am not going to give super detailed explanations for a lot of races unless they are warranted. Where they are, I have footnoted them. I live in the East Valley so a lot of what I looked at was Valley related. I also looked into Santa Monica because Measure SM is a big deal.
State Board of Equalization 3: Tony Vazquez
In 2017, the State Board of Equalization was largely stripped of its powers and duties and gutted from 4800 staffer to 400 staffers. Still, it remains a constitutionally mandated agency that administers Property Taxes, Alcoholic Beverage Taxes, and Taxes on Insurers programs. The point of the board is to ensure that taxes are assessed fairly statewide. Yeah, it’s weird. Anyway, the GOP candidate in the race has used his platform to attack the SB60 Gas Tax (more on this later). Forget that. Tony Vazquez is a former Santa Monica mayor and while his platform for the BOE is thin, it’s better than actively destructive.
Los Angeles County Sheriff: Alex Villanueva
I’m not thrilled about either candidate in this race, to be honest. Both have ties to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) but both pitch themselves as reform candidates who will address years of endemic abuse and corruption within LASD. Neither seems to be up to the job. I’ve heard some people say that Jim McDonnell, the acting sheriff, should be given a chance to put his mark on the department. I have also watched as rank and file have swung to Alex Villanueva as McDonnell has tried to enact reforms. McDonnell has ties to the former sheriff, Lee Baca, who was convicted of obstructing an investigation into jail abuses by the LASD. McDonnell has endorsements from politicians but Villanueva has the support of the local party clubs. It’s really a coin toss for me, but since I’m picking, I guess I’ll go with Villanueva - he’s the slightly more outside candidate for now, and I’ll keep an eye on this for 2022.
Los Angeles County Assessor: Jeffrey Prang
Jeff Prang is endorsed by Kamala Harris and is the incumbent assessor. His opponent is literally listed with the name John “Lower Taxes” Loew on the ballot and couldn’t even get a website together for this election. This is a pretty easy call.
Justice, California State Court of Appeal; Second District
Electing judges is dumb but since we do it, here’s some thoughts. Look: these are all qualified and smart jurists. I base my endorsements here on a mix of reviewing various endorsements with a critical eye to judges who score too high on conservative groups’ questionnaires about judicial philosophy. The L.A. Times endorses “yes” on all these candidates as a show of judicial independence, but I don’t hang with that. Judges make political choices and while I believe we shouldn’t have the power to vote on them, if we do then we might as well use that power to vote for judges who reflect our Democratic values. Certainly the GOP votes for judges that will enact their visions.
Division 1
Helen Bendix: No
Victoria G. Chaney: No
Division 2
Elwood G. Lui: Yes
Victoria Chavez: No
Division 3
Luis A. Lavin: Yes
Hamlin Dhandina: Yes
Anne Egerton: Yes
Division 4
Thomas Willhite: No
Nora Manella: No
Division 5
Lamar W. Baker: Yes
Carl Moor: Yes
Dorothy Kim: Yes
Division 6
Arthur Gilbert: Yes
Martin J. Tangeman: Yes
Division 7
John Segal: Yes
Gail Feuer: Yes
Division 8
Tricia Bigelow: No
Los Angeles Superior Court
Personally, I feel too often we see prosecutors elevated to judgeships, it’s like a pipeline from the DA to the Superior Court. To me, it’s best that a candidate have some sort of judicial experience before they get the post - as a Judge Pro Tem or as a mediator of some kind. All respect to my prosecutor friends out there, but being a judge is a different job. That said, if nobody in the race has that experience - a not uncommon event - it’s worth looking at what else they bring to the table.
Los Angeles Superior Court, Office 4: Veronica Sauceda
Los Angeles Superior Court, Office 16: Patricia “Patti” Hunter  This is the one judicial race that I really want to highlight. Hunter’s opponent - Sydne Michel - has a lot of ties to the gun industry. Her kid and her dog are both named after guns, her husband is an NRA lawyer, and the pro-gun website calguns.net made it clear that voting for her was important to advancing their interests. Vote for Hunter here folks. We don’t need pro-gun voices packing our courts.
Los Angeles Superior Court, Office 60: Holly L. Hancock  I like that Ms. Hancock is a Public Defender - we don’t see enough PDs become judges.
Los Angeles Superior Court, Office 113: Michael Ribons
California State Senate
SD 18 – Bob Hertzberg  Sen. Hertzberg was officially reprimanded by the California State Senate in March of 2018 for his habit of hugging colleagues and constituents. In accepting the reprimand, Hertzberg stated ”I understand that I cannot control how a hug is received, and that not everyone has the ability to speak up about unwelcome behavior. It is my responsibility to be mindful of this, and to respect the Rules Committee's request to not initiate hugs." SD 20 – Connie Leyva SD 22 – Michael Eng SD 24 – Maria Elena Durazo SD 26 – Ben Allen SD 30 – Holly Mitchell SD 32 – Bob J. Archuleta SD 34 – Tom Umberg
California State Assembly
AD 36 – Steve Fox AD 37 – Monique Limón AD 38 – Christy Smith AD 39 – Luz Rivas AD 41 – Chris Holden AD 43 – Laura Friedman AD 44 – Jacqui Irwin AD 45 – Jesse Gabriel AD 46 – Adrin Nazarian AD 47 – Eloise Reyes AD 48 – Blanca Rubio AD 49 – Ed Chau AD 50 – Richard Bloom AD 51 – Wendy Carrillo AD 52 – Freddie Rodriguez AD 53 – Miguel Santiago AD 54 – Sydney Kamlager AD 55 – Gregg Fritchle AD 56 – Eduardo Garcia AD 57 – Ian Calderon AD 58 – Cristina Garcia AD 59 – Reggie Jones-Sawyer AD 62 – Autumn Burke AD 63 – Anthony Rendon AD 64 – Mike Gipson AD 65 – Sharon Quirk-Silva AD 66 – Al Muratsuchi AD 70 – Patrick O’Donnell
U.S. House of Representatives
CD 23 – Tatiana Matta CD 25 – Katie Hill CD 26 – Julia Brownley CD 27 – Judy Chu CD 28 – Adam Schiff CD 29 – Tony Cardenas Post-2016 I have often wondered what it would take for me to vote to give a seat up to a Republican - is there a figure as odious as Trump in the Democratic party? This is the race that currently comes closest for me. Tony Cardenas - my rep - has been accused of rape and is facing a civil suit from a Jane Doe; he has denied the charge and asked for a House ethics investigation. I’m begrudgingly going to vote for him, but I am hoping he either a) clears his name in the next year, b) steps aside, or c) is faces a legitimate primary because the Dems have to do better than having an accused rapist on the ballot in 2018.  CD 30 – Brad Sherman CD 32 – Grace Napolitano CD 33 – Ted Lieu CD 34 – Jimmy Gomez Kenneth Meija is a longshot Green candidate in this district - I don’t like his take on SB1 and his call to repeal it, but I would imagine a lot of people I respect might disagree with me on him overall.  CD 35 – Norma Torres CD 37 – Karen Bass CD 38 – Linda Sanchez CD 39 – Gil Cisneros CD 40 – Lucille Roybal-Allard CD 43 – Maxine Waters CD 44 – Nanette Barragán CD 47 – Alan Lowenthal
County Measure W: Yes
This is a 2.5± per acre parcel tax on impermeable land (i.e. the parts of land that doesn’t absorb water) to raise funds that will be used to fund projects to capture stormwater, clean it, and percolate it into underwater aquifiers. This money would double the amount that the County Flood District (if you’re in L.A. county you’re almost definitely in it, unless you’re north of Palmdale) captures and help us reduce dependence on water from outside sources.
L.A. City Charter Amendment B (Public Bank): Emphatically Yes
This charter amendment would give the city the power to establish a public bank. A public bank is a government owned bank that holds the city’s deposits and can be used to make loans to projects the city supports. North Dakota has a public bank that is extremely profitable and which funds public works projects throughout the state. Additionally, debt service payments and institutional fees can be reduced when the city has its own bank, saving us all in the long run. To be clear: Amendment B would not actually establish a bank - this would take legislative action and involve a lot of detailed analysis and rulemaking. This is just the first step in a long process, but a necessary one.
L.A. City Charter Amendment E (Realign City Election Dates): Yes
This amendment would realign the city’s primary dates to match state primary dates, lowering costs and reducing voter fatigue. We should do this.
LAUSD Charter Amendment EE (Realign LAUSD Election Dates): Yes
This amendment would realign LAUSD’s primary dates to match state primary dates, lowering costs and reducing voter fatigue. We should also do this.
Burbank Measure P (Sales Tax for General Fund): Yes
The city will experience a $20M revenue shortfall, this is a 0.75¹ sales tax to close that gap. Yes, sales taxes are regressive, but until we address Prop 13 its one of the few tools cities have to close budget gaps in California. Vote yes or get ready to see local services cut.
Burbank Measure QS (Parcel Tax for Schools): Yes
A parcel tax differs from a property tax in that the parcel tax is applied based on a characteristic of the land while a property tax is based on its value. Here, Burbank proposes to tax each piece of improved land at 10Âą per square foot to raise $9M for schools. On a side note, this will require 2/3 of voters to confirm.
Glendale Measure S (Sales Tax for General Fund): Yes
Much like Burbank, Glendale proposes a 0.75Âą sales tax to generate about $30M annually. Vote yes or get ready to see local services cut.
Santa Monica Measure SM (Require Supermajority Council Approval for Floor Area Ratio and Height Limit Changes): NO NO NO NO
This Charter amendment would require 5 of 7 council members to approve any changes to the downtown community plan for ten years. Folks, this is slow growth nonsense. The city charter already requires a majority vote to approve any changes, requiring a supermajority simply makes it more difficult to address any projects that might be slightly out of compliance. Don’t make it harder to build things.
Santa Monica Measure TL (Term Limits for Council Members): No
This would limit any council member to three terms, whether consecutive or not. I just fundamentally disagree with the idea of term limits, and encourage you to vote no on this.

by SandyRook77
Nyx Allistar is a werewolf mage with a dark past. Banished from the pack, she made a new life for herself. Now, she’s back in the pack and trying to keep them safe.

Lexa Devereux, de Pakstoka of the Forest Pack, finds a threat to the safety of her pack. Forced to bring back the woman she had turned away, she finds that the past isn’t what it was and that her future is already written by the Gods.
What was once mythical is now reality. Wereanimals, Mages, and meddlesome Gods come together in a Post-Apocalyptic World. Where truth is questioned and faith is needed. What happens when the past meets the present?

Off the ice - Episode 1
Tumblr media
Little extra for you guys!
Today’s coverage is presented to you by Arkadia’s Sports Chat Radio Station and their sports analysts Ron Hutchinson and Elizabeth Chenard
Hutchinson: Ladies and gents, welcome back to the Puck Talk, the show where Lizzie and I talk about hockey and stuff.
Chenard: Stuff being generally linked to hockey.
Hutchinson: Well said, Lizzie, you’ve always got these great sentences to add to my rambling and I love it.
Chenard: Would you look at that.
Hutchinson: Except they cannot, in fact, ‘look’, because this is a radio station.
Chenard: Oh, I see what you did there
  Now, about the Strikers!
H: Yes!
C: They’ve got a great team, this year, do they?
H: They do, Lizzie, they do.  So much so that they’ve got six losses this year, with thirty-two games played, that’s 26 wins right there!
C: That’s incredible, and remember all these scary things we saw a couple years ago, back-to-back losses, some atrocious trades

H: But let’s remind the folks that many thought Mia Compton leaving the team would be terrible! And look how that turned out!
C: That whole situation has got a name now, I call it the ‘Alexandria Woods factor’, and it’s pretty interesting if you ask me.
H: Pretty interesting? I get chills as soon as she steps on the ice.
C: Well damn.
H: I know.  How many goals has she scored up to now, do you have it in that computer of yours?
C: Uh-huh, she’s got twelve down, and a nice top shelf that I really liked against the Typhoon’s Doreen Everett last Friday, did you see that one, Ron?
H (excited): Oh, I sure did.
C: So what we got now, I’ll sum it up to you, we got Lexa Woods as the first center, we got Clarke Griffin manning the goals, we got Reyes and Blake keeping the D-line strong, we got wingers like Jaime Hurd and Lucy Marks, dizzyingly fast girls, these two

H: Don’t forget Charlotte Langton, I’ve seen good stuff from her the past few games.
C: I was gonna talk about her, actually, because she is now permanent on the second line – coach Reeve has told the press she is, quote on quote, ‘100% satisfied with the kid’s efficiency’, and let’s remind the listeners that this ‘kid’ is only twenty years old!
H: This is a young team.
C: Absolutely, but they don’t show it at all, even Clarke Griffin, who we know to be a very strong-minded, calm goalie, is twenty-one herself!
H: Means the window is only starting to open for them, that’s a good sign.
C: Complete reversal of situation for these girls, I’m so very happy for them.
H: Now let’s talk about the game itself – Lizzie, you’ve been to one of these winter games, right?
C: Yeah, the 2006 classic- that was DC’s Shockwave against Delphi’s Royals.
H: Were you cold?
C (laughing): Yeah, yeah, I was – it was close to -20!  The wind was pretty strong also, players were freezing on the bench!  Now they’ve started heating those bad boys, I heard.
H: How does that work, do they put the heaters under the bench or something?
C: I have no idea!
H (after a pause): Hey, Lizzie, guess what, I’ve got a surprise for you.
C: What?
H: Yeah, we’re bringing someone in the studio this morning.
C: Yeah? Who would that be?
Lexa Woods (entering the room): Me.
C (gets beeped, covers mouth): Holy sh*t!  Oh, I’m sorry!
H: That’s fine, I knew we’d have to beep you.
C (a bit flustered): Well hi!  Good to have you here!
Woods (nodding politely): Thanks for having me!
H: Do I get a thank you for that?
C: Oh my god, Ron.
H (to Lexa): She’s a big fan but she’s too proud to admit it.
Woods (laughing): That’s alright.
C: I won’t hide from it!  I’m a fan! There, I said it! H: That feels good, Izzie, doesn’t it?
C: Shut up.  Oh, will that get beeped also?  No?  Oh, close call.
W: Well if it helps, I’m a fan of your show!  I listen to it when I’m stuck in the morning traffic.
H: That’s quite flattering!  Though now if you have a bad game, we can’t say anything if case you’re listening!
C: Bummer.
W: I’ll try my best not to have a bad game.
C: Yeah, but I don’t think you’ve ever had a bad game this season.
H: I corroborate – even though you’re biased, Liz, no offense.
C (sticking out her tongue): I’m not biased, I’m just stating the obvious.
W: Oh, thanks!
H: Alright, let us go back to hockey talk here.  So Lexa, with the classic tomorrow, do you see that game as a serious contest or do you see it as a way to have fun?
W (taking a moment to find her words): Hum, well, I think of it as a game first and foremost, but I also wanna see the fun in it, I mean, we’ve all played outdoor hockey as kids, so it definitely brings out some good memories.
H: Oh, I can relate to that
God, we used to freeze to death out there.
W (chuckling): My mum used to give me these thick socks, and she told me to wear two or three pairs at a time so it got to the point where I could barely fit into my skates.
C: But they do heat the benches, right?
W: Yeah, they do!
H and C (at the same time): But where do they put the heating?
W (slightly confused): Uh, depends on the place but in Polis I think it’s integrated in the bench.
H: Huh.  Good to know.
C (looking at her sheets): You’re playing against Polis, that must be special for you considering it’s only your second time playing against them!
W: Yeah, it definitely is.  Last game against them was fun, I was meeting some of my buddies on the ice between plays and I remember seeing Robbie from a distance, and I was thinking to myself ‘go see her or it’ll be awkward’, and then she came by and didn’t say anything, just bumped my shoulder and I did the same.
C: You didn’t say anything?
W: Well we did, eventually, she said ‘hey old thing’, I said ‘hey kiddo’ and then we were talking like nothing happened – just caught up right away.
H: Stories like that are so nice to hear.  It must be weird when you know all these people for years and then you get a call and it’s like ‘bye!’.
W: It definitely is, and then coming into the Strike, I knew they already had Griff as their main player, so that was a change of mood.  It was refreshing.
H: Rumors say you didn’t like her at first, is that true?
W (smiling): Well, rumors say a lot of things.
C: Ah, don’t put her into a corner like that.
W: Nah, it’s fine. I’ll tell you what, when I came in I thought Arkadia needed a captain, but they didn’t really, because if a goalie could have the C it’d be Griffin for sure.  She’s some sort of rock to this team, she’s always super involved into everything.  It was different with Polis in a way, because once I was done working I just took the bag and I headed home and that was it.  But the Strikers, they’re a family, they’re all young, they don’t have a family and kids yet so they stick together all the time, and that’s very fun to be a part of.
C: So what would you say your job is in this team?
W: I guess I’ll find out, but I’ll be whatever they want me to be.  Whether it’s someone to fill the net or someone to support the girls and make them feel pumped and ready to play at all times

H: Coach Reeve also said that you’re multi talented – how’s that?
W (smirking): Well, coach Reeve put me in various situations from the start – she’s put me on offense driven plays, with a purpose, you know – like ‘skate up full speed’ or ‘stay beside the net and be annoying’, and I think I’ve been pretty good at all these things and that’s something Reeve likes I guess.
C: Something that’s interesting also is your ability to make defensive plays as well!  You’ve been on special teams quite a lot, you’ve been on the ice shorthanded

W: Yeah, I mean, anything that works out for the team.  I just give my best every night.
H: And you’ve got a great +- as a proof of that.
W: Oh yeah? What is it?  Sorry, I haven’t checked it in a while.
H: You’re at +9 for the moment, that’s great.
W: Nice!  I’ll thank my goalie for that.
C (laughing): Ron will bring her in here later, right?
H: Oh, there goes my other big surprise!
All three of them laugh.
H: But jokes aside, we wish you good luck for that game tomorrow, and we hope the weather will be good!
W: Thank you so much! Yeah, it says it should be around -12!
C: We’re definitely looking forward to that game, that is the Polis Scorpions going up against the Arkadia Strikers!  Game will be held in Rendon’s Alliance Arena at seven o’clock, make sure you tune in!
H: A fierce match up! Lexa Woods, thank you for being here this morning!
W: Thanks, I appreciate it!

Les ombres Ă  Madrid
Tumblr media

Even when the Mets make rational decisions, they still blow up in their faces
Tumblr media
In this week’s Grant Land, we’ve got Daniel Murphy’s Revenge, Rickey Henderson and the Fonz, and Carlos GomĂ©z’ Theater.
The All-Star break was just here, and already seems like too much baseball has happened since then. The A’s are ahead of the Mariners and threatening the Yankees? Rougned Odor’s on-base percentage is a cool 100 points higher than last year? There’s an article on MLB.com titled “It’s time to admit Daniel Palka is an elite power hitter”? Guess I need to sigh deeply and Google this Danny Polko while admitting I’m bad at my job.
Apparently, it’s time for me to spend more time trying to learn about baseball, even though THAT’S WHAT I ALREADY DO FOR SEVERAL HOURS EVERY DAY.
It’s frustrating. On the other hand, my quest is your gain. Every week, I take a spin around the sport and look for the stupid and beautiful. Come find the stupid and beautiful baseball with me. We’ll start by studying a baseball thing in a section I like to call ...
Let us study this baseball thing
We used to start with “Baseball Is Good,” but that turned out to be dumb and limiting. Plus, I’m restless. Anyway, let’s talk about the Mets losing 25-4 before we get to anything else.
The Mets have scored two runs or fewer in 39 games this year. The Nationals scored three runs or more in six of the eight innings in which they batted in this game. Michael Taylor was 3-for-4 in this game, with two runs scored and two walks, and he finished with a Win Probability Added of -0.033. Anthony Rendon was 3-for-6 with a walk and four RBI, and his WPA was -0.023. This isn’t suggesting that WPA is a silly, useless stat. It’s suggesting that the Nationals hit the ball do damned hard, they broke a perfectly fine, functional stat.
But while it’s always funny to study position players getting blown up, especially if they’re unlikable, I’m not that interested in Jose Reyes pitching. I’m getting tired of position players pitching. I’m the guy who had a first-press edition of Reckoning on vinyl who turns off MTV when “Losing My Religion” comes on. It’s going to take a lot for me to be as interested about position players pitching again.
Instead, give me players who obliterate their former teams out of spite. Give me Daniel Murphy disemboweling the Mets, like he did in this game with four RBI, three hits, and two homers.
It was kind of an off night for him against the Mets, if we’re being honest.
Murphy was a good-not-great player for parts of seven seasons with the Mets. He was turning 31, and he played a position (second base) that was traditionally filled with players who aged poorly. After a bonkers NLCS, he fared poorly in the World Series, and the Mets made a seemingly smart baseball decision to let him go. Big money to a second baseman on the other side of an aging curve? These are the fan favorites smart teams walk away from.
Then Murphy turned into Rod Carew, and he’s hit .390/.448/.714 in 172 plate appearances against the Mets, and it never stops being funny. They did the right thing! There was sound logic behind their decision instead of weird, Wilpon-flecked wish-knowledge! And yet Murphy murders them every time.
Consider ...
In the 44 games Murphy has played against the Mets, he has more than twice as many games with two hits or more than he has hitless games.
He has more games with two RBI or more than he does games without an RBI.
He has more games with four RBI or more against the Mets than all Mets second basemen have against every other baseball team combined.
Murphy is worth roughly 19 WAR according to Baseball-Reference. Based on this back-of-the-envelope calculator, that means 16 percent of his career value has come against a team against whom he’s played in just three percent of his career games.
It’s a mess, but, well, so are the Mets. Their miserable season this year has nothing to do with a complete collapse of their pitching staff, so this game was a fluke, and it’s probably a fluke that Murphy murders them dead. Stop picking on them.
On the other hand, if they want us to stop picking on them, they should stop being so funny.
Baseball is good, actually
ICYMI: This is what a dream coming true looks like. The moment @memphisredbirds' Dakota Hudson got the call to the @Cardinals! #MiLB pic.twitter.com/fkZyR9fTIQ
— Minor League Baseball (@MiLB) July 29, 2018
You might think that I’m including this tweet as a way to show the emotion of a minor leaguer finally getting the call to the majors, and that’s part of it. It’s a sweet moment, and you rarely get to see it in the middle of a game.
Mostly, though, I’m including this to write this paragraph:
A man named Stubby Clapp was wearing pajamas, and he went out to the mound of dirt and hugged another person wearing pajamas. The person was happy, and as he left the mound of dirt, other people in pajamas swatted him on the butt.
This is what this clip will look like to archeologists and historians in 600 years. There will be no context, but somehow they’ll know that Stubby Clapp was Stubby Clapp, and they’ll have to reconstruct what was happening based on limited evidence. My guess is they’ll think it’s a community-theater play.
Which it kind of is, I guess.
The unwritten rules of ... faking your own death?
Your browser does not support HTML5 video.
If you’re on Apple News, Google AMP, or MySpace Pro, you’ll need to watch the video here. It’s funny because it’s different, and different is entirely true to the character that Carlos Gomez has constructed. Different is good. Baseball needs more different. Baseball needs more funny.
My guess is that Carlos Rodón wasn’t amused. He puts his hands on his hips, and then he brings his glove to his mouth and says something. We can only guess.
Ah, Carlos, back at it again with another whimsical jape! Always the farceur. Bravo, sir! Bravo.
No, Rodón was at least partially annoyed at first. And to be fair, in the heat of competition, anything out of the ordinary like this in response to one of your direct screw-ups is unwelcome. It’s human nature.
The good news is that the moment passed, and humor was found by all.
“It was pretty funny,” Rodon said. “Gomez is a good character and ballplayer. Just liven it up a little.”
There will be no baseballs thrown at butts for this infraction, which is almost a shame. But because there was no punishment, I would like to see this more often. Like, a lot more often. I’d also like to see a player load himself up with packets of stage blood that would explode on contact, so the hit-by-pitch makes it look like an alien is trying to chew through his ribs from the inside.
Let this be a reminder that I was not blessed with physical talent for a reason, and even though it seems unfair, it’s probably for the best.

Baseball pictures of the week
I loved both of these pictures so very much. Don’t make me choose.
Tumblr media

That’s Juan Soto speeding to third, and the photographer has ... turned up his exposure with more ... uh, you know, aperture, and ... okay, fine, the only camera I’ve ever used is on my phone. All I know is that the picture looks cool, and the alternating reds and whites of the crowd give off a faint flag vibe, which pairs nicely with the stars-and-stripes theme of the Nationals logo. Just a gorgeous picture of one of baseball’s brightest young stars.
Tumblr media

As a softball coach, I have to point out that the silhouette is confusing because it looks like a pitcher about to fire her glove at 60 mph, but maybe my brain is broken.
But can it compete with this incredible shot, which captures a great catch from Ramon Laureano in his major league debut? Dunno, the context of Laureano being a fine prospect making his debut might swing the vote, but on the other hand, the abstract quality of the Soto picture appeals to me. I can’t choose.
The important thing is that I didn’t just settle for a silly picture that could be turned into a stupid meme for cheap, disposable laughs

Hrmm, well, let’s just ...
Tumblr media
The best part about cargo shorts is all the extra stuff you can put in them.
Kenta Maeda knows only one way to shag
Tumblr media
Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images
Putting all five full-sized pictures in here would melt data plans, but I think it works perfectly well as a pentaptych. Panel one is desire, panel two is achievement, panel three is consequence, panel four is confirmation, and panel five is the all-too-human desire for recognition. This story is all of us, except the people who don’t succeed at anything.
If you’re wondering why Maeda is willing to crash into walls while shagging batting practice, take a look at his contract. Dude could take the field in a shirt that reads “TOMMY LASORDA SMELLS JUST LIKE HE LOOKS,” and the Dodgers would just have to take it. He’s not paid enough to care, just like he’s not paid enough to avoid crashing into walls during batting practice,
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to send a homemade shirt to Kenta Maeda ...
What Shohei Did
At this point, I’m tempted to turn this into “What Jose Ramirez did” or “What Juan Soto did,” because those players are turning in legendary seasons. The idea was that Shohei Ohtani was going to have a legendary season just because he was both pitching and hitting, and that we should track it zealously every week.
Then Ohtani came down with a case of bum wing. It happens, but now we’re stuck detailing the exploits of dude hitting as well as, say, Daniel Descalso or Gregory Polanco while playing for a team that’s out of postseason contention. Which isn’t that exciting.
And then our hero does stuff like this:
youtube
He’s still an enormous 23-year-old who runs like a track star and can hit baseballs like this. It is still worth keeping track of him, for he is still a gift.
Just ... you know, if you want to pitch in a blowout, Shohei, that’s cool, too.
This Week in McGwire/Sosa
McGwire 21 AB this week 345 AB for the season
1 HR this week 45 HR for the season
.143/.240/.286 this week .287/.463/.713 for the seas
Sosa 27 AB this week 431 AB for the season
4 HR this week 42 HR for the season
.259/.333/.704 this week .306/.371/.638 for the season
Finally, a slump for McGwire! HOW DOES MORTALITY FEEL, JERK? But, really, going back through the archives of this column, I’m not seeing a lot of weekly slumps. That’s perhaps an underrated component to the McGwire/Sosa chase — the consistency. To hit 60 dingers or more requires a steady pace that I’m not sure that we’ve ever truly appreciated.
This is true for both players. But in this week, Sosa became a true contender.
Kids, take it from ol’ Grant: ‘98 was just about the most fun that you could ever have in a baseball season. And when Sosa surged to 42, it was absolutely electric. He was catching McGwire. There was a race. There was a race.
Spoonerism of the week
Tumblr media
I own 2,054 Rick Leach cards, give or take. If you want more baseball card takes, they’re waiting for you, but I guarantee you that my mom dropped of thousands of Rick Leach cards the day I moved into my house. The entire box might be Rick Leach cards. It would be like the start of a Dan Brown novel, but danged if it isn’t possible.
I would have appreciated these cards if, at some point, a kid who was thoroughly into his or her copy of Runny Babbit leaned over and whispered, “Lick Reach.”
It would have made me giggle, and not just because it sounds like a stat ESPN would cover during the 2018 Porn Combine. It just sings, dammit.
Lick Reach, private investigator.
Or ...
My mom wants me to go out with someone a little more respectable, and a little ... less Lick Reach.
Or ...
Heyyyyy, it’s the Licker! What’s up, Lick Man?
There are a lot of possibilities when it comes to a Lick Reach. My only regret is that he isn’t playing today. Because, yes, baseball needs more 61-year-olds playing at full strength, who are named Lick Reach, more or less.
In conclusion, Lick Reach. Thank you.

Under legislation proposed by State Sen. Kevin de Leon, the state would dramatically ramp up efforts to decarbonize its grid.
California's Senate leader has introduced legislation that would require the state to draw all of its electricity from renewable sources by 2045. If passed, the bill would make the nation's largest state the second to commit to a carbon-free grid.
State Sen. Kevin de Leon, a Democrat, introduced the bill last week as a placeholder ahead of a filing deadline, with more detailed language to come, spokesman Anthony Reyes said in an email.
The legislation makes California the latest in a small number of states this year to propose dramatically ramping up renewable energy, even as President Donald Trump stresses primarily fossil fuels in his energy plan.
In January, lawmakers in Massachusetts filed legislation that would go even further, requiring fossil fuel-free electricity by 2035, and asking the same from other sectors, including transportation and heating, by 2050.
Last week, a Nevada lawmaker introduced a bill that would update that state's portfolio standard to require 80 percent renewables by 2040. The current standard calls for 25 percent by 2025.
Of the 29 states with renewable portfolio standards, only Hawaii has set a target for reaching 100 percent, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Hawaii's deadline is 2045.
De Leon's bill would also advance by five years, to 2025, California's existing target to hit 50 percent of electricity from renewable energy.
The state is already well on its way. The California Energy Commission says the state got about 27 percent of its electricity from renewables last year, slightly better than the 25 percent required by law. Capacity has more than doubled over the past decade. California's largest utilities have also said they are ahead of schedule for meeting their 2020 goal.
With Republicans now in control of Congress and the White House, California's Democratic political leaders appear to be readying themselves for a fight. The day after Trump's victory in November, de Leon issued a joint statement with Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, also a Democrat, promising to defend the state's progressive policies from any changes at the federal level.
In January, the two leaders announced they had hired former Attorney General Eric Holder to lead any legal battles with the Trump administration, citing potential clashes on climate change and immigration.
De Leon also told the Los Angeles Times that the state's current renewable portfolio standard, which he helped pass in 2015, didn't go far enough. "We probably should have shot for the stars," he said.

In Legislative Shuffle, California Prioritizes Safety Gear and Sick Leave During Crisis
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California lawmakers convened this year with big plans to tackle soaring health care costs, expand health insurance coverage and improve treatment for mental health and addiction.
But the pandemic abruptly reoriented their priorities, forcing them to grasp for legislative solutions to the virus ripping through the state.
Legislative deliberations this year were defined by quarantined lawmakers, emergency recesses and chaotic video voting — plus a late-night partisan dust-up that led to the death of dozens of bills by the time lawmakers gaveled out early Tuesday morning. Nonetheless, legislators managed to send Gov. Gavin Newsom nearly 430 bills, roughly 40% of the number they’d send in a typical year, according to Sacramento lobbyist Chris Micheli.
Among them were about two dozen COVID-related bills that addressed a range of challenges, including dire shortages of protective gear, sick leave for workers and the administration of a hoped-for COVID-19 vaccine. The measures broadly fit into three categories: dealing with the current crisis, protecting workers and consumers, and preparing for future pandemics.
Newsom has until Sept. 30 to sign the bills into law or veto them.
“In a year that couldn’t be business as usual, this session we were still able to get important business done for the people of California who are facing so many challenges,” said Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins. “This year’s session may be over, but this pandemic is not, and neither is our work.”
Just as important as the measures that made it to Newsom’s desk were the ones that didn’t. For instance, bills that would have limited the use of sensitive personal information in contact tracing investigations died, as did a proposal to help rebuild and fund public health infrastructure across California.
“It leaves us with the status quo,” said Michelle Gibbons, executive director of the County Health Executives Association of California, which lobbies on behalf of the state’s county health directors. “If we had sufficient staffing of public health all along, and stronger resources, it would have helped.”
Immediate Action
Narrowly focused bills that targeted real-time COVID-related problems — and avoided big price tags — were among those easily winning approval.
AB-685, by Assembly member Eloise Gómez Reyes (D-San Bernardino), would require employers to notify their workers of COVID-19 infections at work — and would mandate the reporting of infection data to state and local public health authorities.
A different measure, AB-2164, would require Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, to cover more telehealth visits in underserved areas by eliminating an existing requirement for patients and providers to establish an in-person relationship first.
But this wouldn’t be a permanent change: If signed, the law would sunset 180 days after the official COVID-19 state of emergency is over. Rivas said he had to scale back the cost of the measure by applying it only to the pandemic to get it passed.
“Had we not done that, it was very likely this bill would have been held in the Senate Appropriations Committee,” said Assembly member Robert Rivas (D-Hollister), who introduced the bill.
Another bill written with near missile-guided precision is AB-1710, which would allow pharmacists to administer a COVID vaccine once one is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
“We want to make sure we can gear up as quickly as possible,” said Assembly member Jim Wood (D-Santa Rosa), who authored the bill.
Wood also authored AB-2644, which would require nursing homes to have a full-time “infection preventionist,” and to report deaths from communicable diseases to the state during an emergency. Wood said the bill was written after he “watched with horror” as COVID-19 killed thousands of nursing home residents in the spring.
Consumer and Worker Protections
Lawmakers took on powerful business interests to boost protections for essential workers.
A bill introduced by Sen. Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) would make it easier for some employees infected with COVID-19 to file a workers’ compensation insurance claim until January 2023.
Should Newsom sign SB-1159, for instance, state law would presume that certain front-line workers — from health care workers in hospitals to firefighters who go into people’s homes — were infected on the job unless their employers prove otherwise.
The California Chamber of Commerce, which opposed the measure, questioned whether an employee’s illness could be traced to their job when the virus is so widespread. By varying degrees, at least 14 states have extended workers’ compensation to include COVID-related scenarios, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Frustrated with outbreaks at meatpacking plants, lawmakers also advanced legislation calling on food-processing companies with at least 500 workers to provide two weeks of paid sick leave to those exposed to COVID-19 or advised to quarantine.
The measure, AB-1867, spearheaded by Assembly member Phil Ting (D-San Francisco), also would close a loophole in the federal emergency paid sick leave benefit that Congress authorized this spring, which excluded health care workers and emergency responders. If Newsom signs the bill, they too would qualify for two weeks of paid sick time.
And in what would be the biggest expansion to the state’s family leave program since it began in 2004, lawmakers voted to extend job protections to more workers who wish to take time off to care for a new baby or a sick relative.
California’s family leave program currently exempts small-business workers from the job protections, leaving millions of workers without the benefit. For example, an employee who works for a company with 20 or fewer employees does not qualify for job protection to bond with an infant. Employers with 50 or fewer workers aren’t required to guarantee someone’s job if they leave to care for a sick parent or other family member.
In both cases, that would change to employers with five or more workers if the governor signs SB-1383, introduced by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara).
“In the time of COVID, we are relying on families, grandparents, children to take care of each other when they get sick,” Jackson said. “We should be able to protect ourselves, to take responsibility for ourselves, to be able to protect ourselves without fear of losing our jobs.”
Lessons Learned
Inadequate personal protective gear emerged early on as one of the biggest impediments to California’s coronavirus response — and measures advanced by the legislature could prepare the state for future threats.
“We can be more prepared to protect our state in the next health crisis,” said Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon.
California lawmakers approved a pair of high-profile bills to address protective equipment shortages. The more ambitious proposal, authored by Assembly member Freddie Rodriguez (D-Pomona), would require hospitals to stockpile a three-month supply by April 2021.
“We’ve already lost far too many members to COVID-19,” said Stephanie Roberson, lead lobbyist for the California Nurses Association, which sponsored AB-2537.
“It’s something that could have been prevented,” Roberson said, adding that “it’s the responsibility of employers to protect their workers.”
Newsom also must decide whether the state government should maintain a supply of protective gear for essential workers. SB-275, from Sen. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) and sponsored by the Service Employees International Union California, would mandate the California Department of Public Health within one year to establish a PPE stockpile for health and other essential workers to last 90 days during a pandemic.
It also would require major employers of health care workers — such as dialysis clinics, nursing homes and hospitals — to establish by 2023 or later an additional 45-day stockpile of PPE.
An August report from the University of California-Berkeley found that at least 20,860 California cases of COVID-19 among essential workers could have been avoided, as well as dozens of deaths, if the state had had a sufficient supply of protective gear.
The powerful California Hospital Association fought both measures, saying the goals are laudable yet unworkable. “We agree that bolstering the supply and reliability of PPE for health care and other essential workers is a top priority,” said spokesperson Jan Emerson-Shea.
“It is critically important to remember, however, that we are still in the midst of a pandemic and there are still significant challenges with the global supply chain of PPE.”
