An in-depth test drive review of the Renault Triber AMT
The addition of an AMT lends more convenience and also makes the Renault Triber an even better package
The Renault Triber has the advantage of being one of the most affordable 7-seaters in the Indian market today. When we drove this car last, we did come out impressed with the packaging that is offered for the price. The lack of an automatic was a negative point, but recently Renault launched the Triber AMT, and we’re driving it to find out whether it has any aces up its sleeve or not!
Exterior
No cosmetic changes have been made to the Renault Triber AMT, and it looks similar to the manual variant. Of course, there’s an Easy-R badge at the rear, but that’s about it. The Triber is a compact 7-seater and measures under 4 metres in length, and yet it manages to look very proportionate. The styling is pleasant to look at, and the design has an “offend-none” feel. Renault also offers some nice colour options with the Triber. The vehicle gets 15-inch steel rims, which have been styled to look like alloys.
Interior
The interior of the AMT variant is again similar to the manual variant, with the only change being the new gear lever and the absence of a clutch. The instrument cluster has a gear position indicator, and it beeps a warning when you shift from N to D or R without pressing the brake pedal. Renault has very smartly packaged the cabin of this 7-seater, and it has decent space in all three rows. The Triber is also decently feature-loaded, and it gets 4 airbags, ABS, touch screen infotainment system, manual AC, power windows, projector headlamps, push-button start, 4 speakers + 2 tweeters, reverse camera, 12V charging socket in the third row, etc. in the top variant which is indeed impressive. The seats are also quite comfortable and at par with other cars in this price range. Renault has also given a lot of importance to storage spaces, which are plenty in the cabin.
Performance
The Renault Triber AMT gets a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, petrol engine from the Energy series. It is offered on the Kwid, but it gets Dual VVT on the Triber. This engine is tuned to deliver 53 kW at 6250 RPM and 96 Nm at 3500 RPM, which is the same output as the manual variant. The engine is quiet at low revs but gets vocal after you cross 2500 RPM. It’s a small unit but pulls the car decently. The Triber now gets a 5-speed AMT which feels smoother than the one on Kwid, but yes while up shifting you do feel the head-toss movement that is generally felt in AMTs. When you’re driving fast, gear shifts can feel slow, but when you’re easy on the throttle, it feels smoother and manageable. Downshifts are a bit slow so quick overtakes on the highway need to be planned, otherwise a slow-down shift in the middle of an overtaking manoeuvre can get on your nerves.

There is a manual mode too, and it makes sense to use it on inclines or sometimes to get better control of the gears while overtaking. The engine offers decent driveability in the city, but the power delivery isn’t very punchy, in fact, power is delivered in a flat manner. The Triber won’t disappoint in day-to-day runs, but you might have to take control of the gears sometimes. Renault is also working on a 1.0 turbo petrol engine, and that one should really spice things up.

Driving Dynamics
Just like other Renault cars, the Triber also comes with a very sorted suspension setup. The ride quality is really impressive, and travelling on bad roads doesn’t really unsettle the car or offer a tiring experience to the passengers. The 182 mm ground clearance comes in to be really handy. The steering isn’t as felt as some other Renault cars, and it is quite vague, but it feels very light while driving in the city. The brakes offer good bite and the brake pedal has good progression.
Verdict
The price of the Renault Triber AMT is totally worth it if you are someone who wants convenience and if you are going to drive the car in traffic regularly. This vehicle has always come across as a VFM offering. The Triber doesn’t have any 7-seater rival in this price bracket apart from the Datsun GO+ which is quite smaller in comparison and no longer available as a new vehicle.

Turbo Petrol cars are slowly on the rise, especially in India. Every car manufacturer is trying to provide some form of turbo petrol option for people under the budget. In spite of being quite affordable, most of the cars in this segment pack a punch. Renault Triber when launched was highly criticized for its underpowered engine. The company may provide both manual and automatic transmission options. If launched, it will compete against Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz Turbo plus compact SUVs like the Nissan Magnite and Maruti Vitara Brezza. Design and Changes
The current Renault Triber comes with 14/15-inch wheels which are efficiency-oriented and get the job done. Renault in its attempt to attract new customers may provide 16-inch alloy wheels along with a new alloy design. You can also expect some form of turbo badging throughout the car.
Coming to the aesthetic appeal, the new Renault Triber Turbo Petrol is expected to get bigger spoilers, side skirts, and a blacked-out front grille. Like the other turbo petrol cars sold in India, the Renault Triber too will be available in bright colour options. The interiors of the car may also see some modifications. Higher trims can get a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with some form of connected car technology. The sunroof will also be a great inclusion at this price point.

The newly launched Renault Kiger offers segment-first features at a price level that’s actually not believable - under R200,000!
The five-seater SUV adds to the current line-up of Renault cars in SA which include the Kwid, Duster, Captur and Triber.
The new sub-4m compact SUV is designed in India and is built to take on competition such as Hyundai Venue, Nissan Magnite, Kia Sonet and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
In terms of aesthetics, the front fascia of the SUV gets split LED headlamps with the DRLs on top. The tail-light gets a c-shaped LED to accentuate the width of the car. The car has 16-inch alloys or steel wheels depending on the variant. The wheels sit under flared wheel-arches which gives the car an SUV stance.
In terms of features on the interior, Renault Kiger has an 8-inch touch screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with Bluetooth and WIFI connection. The Renault Kiger also has ‘Multi-sense’ settings that allow the driver to choose different driving modes, a sound setup by Arkamys audio system and a rearview camera with guidance lines for parking. Adding to the modernness of the cabin is a 7-inch digital instrument console for all the vital information to be displayed to the driver.
In terms of powertrain options, the new Kiger has an offering similar to the Nissan Magnite. Buyers have an option to either purchase a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a 1.0-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. The turbocharged variant is able to produce 73 kW of power and 160Nm of peak torque, whereas the naturally aspirated engine puts out just 53 kW of power along with 96Nm of peak torque. Apart from 5-speed manual transmission, the company also offers both AMT and CVT variants for buyers looking for automatic transmission.

Renault's new Triber in SA
When it comes to affordable vehicles, Renault is one of the brands that's got it covered.
The French automotive giant has been producing affordable cars for the longest time, but more recently, they’ve given us the budget-beating Kwid. While the Kwid is by no means the safest nor the most attractive, it has one crucial thing up its sleeve: its price.
Priced between from R144 800 at Group 1 Renault, the Kwid offers cash-strapped consumers the chance to own a brand-new vehicle without having to break the bank. And since the Kwid came to market in 2016, it’s been a regular top seller in South Africa.
Unfortunately for the Kwid range, there hasn’t been a variety of body types to choose from. Buyers could only select the hatchback, and that’s that.
Now Renault hopes to address the Kwid’s shortcomings by introducing a bigger version of it, called the Triber. Scheduled for launch in February 2020, we list a few reasons why we think it could be another sales success for Renault.
Bigger body, greater space
The Renault Triber is built on Renault’s CMF-A platform, albeit a modified version. This architecture is used to underpin the popular Kwid, and Renault believes that this platform is adequate for its forthcoming Triber. The new MPV boasts with a length of under 4m but carries a face that makes it instantly recognizable with Renault’s other MPV/SUV offerings.
The Triber can seat up to seven passengers, but the third row can be removed to increase loading space. With the seats removed, the cargo area is said to be 625L big. This can, of course, increase with the second row of seats folded flat.
Potential buyers are treated to four airbags as standard.
Appealing front design
The Triber, we have to say, is a rather attractive looking vehicle. Based on the images, it features daytime-running LEDs, and a front design reminiscent of the Kadjar (keeping it in the family). The rear is less inspiring, but given its MPV/crossover roots, it does not come across as too out of place.
What we did pick up, though, is a small exhaust pipe hiding underneath the rear bumper. This is a clear indication of the engine that’s in play. Renault opted to implement the Kwid’s 999cc three-cylinder engine in the Triber. This unit produces 56kW and 96Nm, and can be mated with either a five-speed manual gearbox or an automated manual transmission (AMT).
Under R200k?
While the Kwid carries a maximum price tag of just under R175 00, while the Triber retails for under R200 000. Given its size, the four airbags, and MPV/crossover body, Renault would price its newest addition accordingly.
Because the Triber is based on the Kwid, it must continue with the budget-beating onslaught. Renault wouldn’t want to alienate consumers and drive them away from a potential buy; hence they’d want to come in with an aggressive launch price and gradually increase it.

The Renault Kwid was originally launched back in 2015, and Renault continued to sell the entry-segment car with no major updates since then. However, the French carmaker has spiced things up a little in the segment with the recently launched Kwid facelift. Here are the 5 things that will probably answer all your questions about the 2019 Renault Kwid facelift – 1. Dimensions In terms of size, the Kwid measures 3,731 mm in length, 1,579 mm in width, and stands 1,474 mm tall. It has a 2,422 mm wheelbase, and a 184 mm ground clearance, which means you can ease your mind even on bad roads.
2. Exterior and Interior Styling Design-wise, the Kwid does not feel like an entry-segment car at all. The car poses like an SUV, and has a high bonnet to give it a beefy appearance. Features and Safety The 2019 Kwid gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition to that, it gets a rear armrest, a reverse parking camera with guidelines, remote keyless entry and an LED Digital MID.
