Afgelopen weekend werd er in stilte de achtste finales van de KNVB Beker seizoen 2022/23 gespeeld. Tbh idgaf about whether or not changing the roster from 23 or 26 will give some teams tactical advantages. You say it won’t prevent injuries and that bringing inexperienced 17 year olds won’t make a difference for how many minutes the better players play— I disagree.

Viv has said that the women play with their A team for everything. By the time they reach a major tournament, their A team, who has played every friendly that year on top of their dozens of club matches with barely any breaks, are expected to function at top top level for a month. That’s unrealistic and unfair. Injuries primarily come from overworked bodies, which that whole 23 player roster is made up of. Even if they aren’t top of the line players, having an extra 3 players on the roster who can sub in for a player if they are tired is a plus. You can argue that the other non-starting players on a 23 player squad could also sub in, but again the main 23 players have been overworked that year as they are most likely also A team players. The 3 extras most likely didn’t play every friendly, and they aren’t on the A or maybe even B team. Not playing national team friendlies gives them ~week long breaks from club football. And if the 3 have been training with the top 23 for the past month before the tournament, they would have grown as players. The 3 can act as a buffer, a last case scenario

Dude, please for the love of god stop with this thinking. Your reasoning is simply wrong.

Those 3 players won't be used to relief starting players, they just won't. Look at the men's world cup and go see how many teams have used all 26 players. Heck go look at 2019 and see how many teams truly used all 23 players on their roster. If teams don't use the 23 player roster for injury prevention, why would they use a 26 player roster like that? A 23 player roster is (under normal circumstances) already big enough to make sure players can be rested. The fact teams don't do that is down to teams not wanting to drop in quality while not sure of a win yet. Subbing Viv for Renate Jansen means your quality goes way down, adding 3 more spots to a roster isn't going to change that Renate Jansen isn't good enough. Whether it's a 23 or 26 player roster Viv won't be subbed while the team is losing.

Saying those 3 extra players didn't play friendlies and therefor are more rested also just isn't true. On most teams players in the spots 16-26 are all considered on the bubble and fly in and out. On a 23 player roster you already have multiple players who either weren't called in every camp or hardly ever played in friendlies. Teams don't have a set 23 player roster that is always the same and now suddenly can expand to 26. Also, why are you pretending like teams don’t have the option of including rested players when they have 23 spots? If teams want to prioritize fitness over skills and therefor select a less skilled player because she is more rested they can already do that. They don’t need 26 spots to prioritize fitness. 

Player 24, 25 and 26 on the roster are not players who never get called in and always have a break when the NT camps happen btw. Crystal Dunn was player 24 in 2015 for the US..... 

Those 3 extra spots give top teams additional tactical options, pretending they will be used to relief players when nothing suggests they will doesn't make sense.
