The case of the mutilations of Bautzen (2/3)
Larrey stands up and attacks head-on, as for a duel of honor [..]
"Penetrated by the importance of the decision I was called upon to give in this remarkable case of forensic surgery, I persisted in my first judgment; the other members of the jury shared my opinion." The conclusions must be made within three days, there will be 2632 men with mutilated fingers to be examined! The jury begins its consultations on June 16, at 5 a.m. Each soldier is examined individually with the establishment of a personal file.
"The examination carried out with the most scrupulous attention focused
1 / On the nature of the injuries and the infirmities which result from them.
2 / On the causes which produced these injuries and on the way in which these causes act.
3 / On the circumstances which accompanied or preceded these solutions of continuity.
It results from this examination:
1 / That almost all the wounds were made by blunt bodies pushed by firearms, and a small number by bladed weapons, directed against those who were hit.
2 / That the majority of the wounded presented at the same time other wounds at various points on the surface of the bodies (...) made by the passage of the bullets.
3 / That the small number of wounded in whom the aforementioned circumstances did not offer themselves in such an obvious way consists precisely of former soldiers whose dedication is hardly allowed to be doubted.
(..) The jury, in summing up, protests that it is physically impossible to establish the slightest proof that any of the soldiers visited by them will have mutilated himself voluntarily, and he thinks that reading the detailed statements they drew of all the wounded subjected to his visit, explaining the reasons for the apparently great number of mutilations, will help to dispel the unfavorable opinion prevalent about those who have suffered them. "
What's more, Larrey doesn't just exonerate innocent people, he analyzes and explains the causes through a demonstration of mechanics, then of ballistics.
When firing in three ranks, those of the second or third often lean, without thinking of the danger, the barrel of their rifle on the shoulders and hands of their comrades of the first rank. In addition, the new recruits, for lack of in-depth military training, involuntarily injure their fingers by not respecting the twelve statutory loading times of the flintlock rifle. Finally, when the infantry charges the enemy from below upwards, as in the hills of Bautzen, the soldiers hold their hands high on their rifles, offering their fingers as the most salient targets to the enemy fire.
The expertise is now complete although "some" tried until the last moment to dissuade Larrey from thus braving Napoleon's wrath.
[..]
They see him emerge in the imperial quarters with a confident step, a serene, even smiling, face, holding in one hand the conclusions of the jury and his own summary, in the other the heavy file of the 2632 minutes. The aides-de-camp step forward to relieve Larrey of his burden. A wasted effort, on the contrary he hugs him tighter under his arms, knowing from experience how much the intermediaries have the art if not to make the pieces disappear, at least to grant them eternal rest.
