If only it was possible to be anymore happy. Riley perked the instant she said his name and took them both into a far-needed embrace. She would note the smells of the underground and burning lavender incense left permanently on his clothes. He would take in and be enwrapped in her aura like warmth in the cold. Feelings of stalwart determination, radiance, power and playful curiosity all remingling with his sensory at once. This could be no other then his Champion, Cynthia. He was all aglow quite literally. When they parted his eyes held a faint blue flush beneath the shade of his hat before fading away.

" Hm, Miss Cynthia Karashina Most-Honored Champion of Sinnoh. ...That's a mouthful even for me. " Alright he had to laugh at himself a little. The formality was to give her the utmost respect of being the Champion he serves as guardian. But more then that she was his friend first. They can both relax especially when there was a much needed realigning to do. " Cynthia it is then, or maybe we can find an even better name and title for me to call you when we're in deep state. I've gotten some of my best battling strategies figured out in meditation."

Her finger crumbing away a patch of dirt on his cheek made him chuckle. There's more where that came from. And he'd playfully bat at one of her clips.

" And not at all. My rock is your rock at any time you need if you don't mind the Pokemon that is. They're all settled on the bottom mine levels by this hour and my partners know I have a student here with me. We got this place mostly to ourselves. Perfect. " They won't be going to the cabin this time around. He only paid it a glance when they passed to spot Lucario watching the island from the rooftop. " It's a clear night and the moon is going to be at waning phase. Not full completely to overstimulate sensory but just enough to elevate it. I'm just going to give you gentle nudges in the right direction is all when we get started but I think you're good at being grounded. "

No one practically runs a region everyday without being just that. But the weight of it all can wear anyone down no matter how stalwart.

Not to long later he had taken them into a cavern opening; the sounds of rippling water and a faint glow was just down a passage. The end revealed an inner grotto where the sea around the island rippled just below the rock floor. The warm light of hand lanterns settled on the floor made his hidden away nook just comfortable enough for the natural ambiance to come through. Besides that there was just a burning tray for already smoldering incense and his neatly folded jacket. No oil drums or abandoned equipment to be found. This was the only other sort of divot in besides the mine opening most likely from the rising sea taking it underwater most of the year save for a dry season. It was almost symbolic really. Shifting spaces like shifting auras to be experienced in the moment.

" There's not to much to teach really. If you know how to breathe you're already most of the way there. Meditation is more like a skill that needs practice and strategy. I'm counting on you to continue when we're done with our training today. Do that and you can take on any brain bad guy you're up against with your charged up Mindful Mash. " A wink and Riley settles on the cool cavern floor with legs crossed, a hand extends to his coat across from him to seat on. " Get comfortable in any way you like. Meanwhile I'd like to know what you want from this. Can't be just to sit in an abandoned mine with me all night. " (Not that he doesn't love her company of course!)

It was some hours before her arrival. Perhaps he could've at least spent a little of that looking presentable .. but that's also precious time taken from training some more. Before he knew it he felt Cynthia's familiar ambiance drawing close. Riley was at least on the surface to greet her arrival. His coat was tucked away somewhere during training, leaving his black top rolled up at the sleeves and the golden Guardian chain always around his neck left. His wild hair was only tamed by slipping on his hat. Try as he might there was going to be some patches of dirt he couldn't dust off his face and clothing from being underground.

Not presentable enough for a champion no ... but for his very good friend who has probably expected nothing less? Just fine!

He felt her Pokemon scatter amongst the island when Riley turned a corner from an outcropping of rock. No doubt they'd meet up with his own partners somewhere. Thankfully he'd only have Cynthia's company for that private time she wanted.

" Miss Cynthia. " One last formality. He'd just dip his head forward before letting all that behind. No one here but them. Riley offered an outstretched hand for her and a smile. " Radiant as always. 'Scuse my appearence but at least that tells you I'm all warmed up for you. "

J'imagine bien que ce n'est pas moi qui vais vous l'apprendre : Richard Ford est un immense écrivain. En fait, c'est moi qui le découvre, après la bataille. Ce livre m'a fait un effet comparable à ma lecture de Dalva de Jim Harrison, ou d'un grand classique américain, quoi que ce soit alors un souvenir encore plus lointain, comme Steinbeck ou Fitzgerald. Bref, c'est une évidence. Tout le long de ma lecture, j'ai eu envie de vérifier et de comparer par rapport à la vie de Richard Ford tant j'avais l'impression que le jeune héros (narrateur plus âgé qui raconte ses quinze ans depuis ses vieux jours) était vrai, que son récit était forcément du vécu. Tout sonne extraordinairement vrai. Le récit de cette enfance brutalement pulvérisée est insolite et incompréhensible pour le jeune Dell : ses parents, plutôt insignifiants, moyens à beaucoup d'égards, braquent subitement une banque avec maladresse, et se font coffrer rapidement. Ils laissent alors leurs enfants, les jumeaux Dell et Berner quasiment livrés à eux-mêmes ; avec un plan B pour éviter l'orphelinat, qui mènera Dell au Canada, terre si ressemblante et si différente, terre d'adoption, même si l'accueil, par le biais du mystérieux Arthur Remingler, sera loin d'être chaleureux. Cette incompréhension est incroyablement bien rendue par les propos du jeune Dell qui s'attache à coller aux faits, et aux émotions et déductions qu'il fait depuis son jeune âge, tandis que le narrateur vieillissant corrige deux ou trois choses que la vie lui a apprise. Ce qui frappe, c'est l'honnêteté totale du jeune garçon. Sa volonté d'être normal, de s'adapter, son goût pour comprendre, pour étudier, complètement perturbés par son destin de fils de hors-la-loi qui le propulse dans une vie qui ne lui ressemble pas. Cette honnêteté, cette envie de comprendre sont touchantes, elles vous retournent les tripes, car on y comprend la volonté de pardonner les parents irresponsables. L'absolue candeur couplée à l'intelligence de l'adolescent donnent un récit à la fois subtil et brut. Pas de fioritures, juste la crue vérité, et les mille méandres psychologiques qui expliquent l'inexplicable. Malgré le sort malheureux qui le guette, les complications qui se dressent encore, même au Canada salvateur, Dell, grâce à une nature placide et prudente, réussit à grandir, et à s'en sortir. Il a une aptitude hors du commun pour s'adapter, accepter ce que la vie lui amène ; très vite, il comprend que c'est sa force, sa rampe pour faire de lui un rescapé, force que ne possède pas sa sœur jumelle, hélas. L'écriture de Richard Ford est limpide tout en étant subtile, fine, attentive aux détails. De ce rapport presque clinique de ce que trament les adultes, empêtrés dans leurs logiques et fantasmes confus, naissent des moments rares d'écriture, ou le grotesque vous saisit et vous secoue d'un rire sincère, alors que la tragédie est à l'œuvre. Il suffit de presque rien pour basculer d'un côté ou de l'autre du destin, et cette ironie du sort est démontrée rigoureusement dans le roman. Absurde, oui assurément, la vie l'est. On navigue à vue, rien de plus. Leçon d'humilité et aussi de courage, finalement, qui ne se présente jamais comme telle, le narrateur étant lui-même trop humble pour asséner des vérités à qui que ce soit. Et pourtant, on sort de son livre avec une compréhension plus profonde de l'humanité, ce que l'on ne peut pas dire de beaucoup de romans.
