My ward is the respiratory ward, so a good chunk of it is dedicated to caring for people experiencing exacerbations of COPD - that is, lung infections and inflammation spikes in people with lung disease which is usually (but not always) caused by a lifetime of smoking

And with the generation shift with smoking attitudes, maybe we will get to a time where that is not simply the fact of life for the older demographic. There will come a time when it's not just a given that everyone smoked and breathlessness and pneumonia will be the thing that will probably kill you eventually.

Except of course, the general population has been repeatedly exposed to COVID now and will continue to be.

So congrats I guess. The Youth now have a good chance of coming pre-installed with pneumonitis scarring on the lungs. Or getting post covid autoimmune diseases.

(young people are less likely to get pneumonitis that's true. But I I've seen stuff about drug companies hiking the price of remdesivir and paxlovid, so overall there is going to be an increase in more severe outcomes on average)

Blaming Trump just because he's the president you're more comfortable hating is ignorant of objective reality. Biden has been acting president since January 2021 and is our current president now. He ran his platform on listening to the science to put an end to Covid, then kept walking back mitigation measures for the benefit of the economy, not the people. He's the one who insisted that "we have the tools" and then took them away when ending the emergency, that "the pandemic is over" because "everyone here [at an auto show] is in pretty good shape" in SEPTEMBER 2022, encouraging severe decline in vaccine uptake ever since (x) (piggybacking onto a wholesale decline in vaccination).

somewhat ironic considering he also insisted vaccines were the primary method of protection against covid—calling covid "a pandemic of the unvaccinated"— despite the fact that many people CANNOT (not "choose not" but CANNOT) get vaccinated and those people are our most vulnerable (children under 5, immunocompromised people, people with some preexisting conditions, cancer patients, etc.), and that the vaccines are not sterilizing, meaning you can still be infected with AND spread covid even after vaccination. focusing on the "vax and relax" method of mitigation is ignorant of the science and still puts our most vulnerable at risk, especially when fewer than 25% of americans have even gotten the new (oct 2023, XBB variant) vaccine.

Ending the emergency:

drastically reduced Covid funding for testing, tracking/tracing, and treatments (Paxlovid, Remdesivir, Evusheld, etc.) which moved these products to commercial market, allowing them to hike up prices into the thousands.

made the new vaccine (again, the ONLY method of prevention aside from maybe handwashing being emphatically proposed by the Biden administration in 2024) over $120 without insurance when it was previously free to all (Bridge program is available but has limited access) -- a price hike of over 400%.

made millions of people ineligible for Medicaid (x), eliminating their insurance and forcing them to pay out of pocket for the vaccine and other treatments

drastically reduced the number of testing/treatment sites and mobile clinics despite the WHO's reiteration that covid is still a global threat

ended subsidized testing save for the USPS program, which was to end in May 2023 with the emergency but was brought back that fall because the forecast for winter was so bad—and thanks to JN.1, the record highest covid peak throughout the pandemic aside from Omicron, the forecast was correct.

eliminated hazard pay and paid covid leave, ensuring that millions who cannot afford to stay home from work burn themselves out while sick with covid—putting them at higher risk for long covid—and infect the rest of their workforce

eliminated mask mandates, and by refusing to counter misinformation allowed them to be demonized to the point that healthcare facilities are rolling back PRE-COVID PPE measures like in NICUs (x) despite evidence of their efficacy

this is just a short list but i think it's plenty to make my point. no one person is to blame for a global health catastrophe but imo it's willfully ignorant to try to lay the blame at trump's feet when biden has simply picked up where trump left off, especially after swearing up and down that he would follow the science.

and don't you DARE ask "well what are we supposed to do?!?!11/11" it's proof that you seriously have not been listening to the disabled and vulnerable people around you begging you to MASK WITH A RESPIRATOR, to GET TESTED, to advocate for AIR FILTRATION, VENTILATION, AND PURIFICATION on an institutional level in businesses, schools, restaurants, and other areas of public congregation, to ORGANIZE AND ACT UP!!!
