now this one IS a big fear of mine and I almost didnt make it through my first listen. Im gonna have to rely on yall to refresh my memory on anything of particular import

Arachnophobia

Ghost spider! Ghost spider! Ghost spider! XD I remember thinking this was a really twist on the old standby of "ick! spider"

This also feels like a good time to rack my brain a lil more for what i remember from my first listening attempt, since its starting to come back

The "monsters": I believe they have a standardized naming convention, like, each fear fits into a domain. Piecemeal reminded me one is called like Meat or something, of course Squirm is bugs or whatever, and that Lady in Red is ...possessed by it? Something about an Avatar, and thats what happens to Jon in the end (hence all the eyes on him in fanart (not to be confused with Nightvale Cecil of the eldritch unknowableness )(i s2g these fandoms absolutely overlap and blend in my poor lil brain)(is that enough parenthesis to close everything? idk n idc))

Martin: this is wildly specific to me and my interests, but he reminds of Adachi from Persona 4 - both in being comedically inept AND in it being a ruse to hide something. well see if im right

The Bone Turners Tale:

Ugh, I remember being *so proud* of myself for connecting the dots between this one and Do Not Open, only for my wife to remind me that no one lived in that flat aside from the guy with the box. Oh well XD

fun fact: this one is linked forever in my mind with Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, Vens Snow White arc. I couldnt tell you what I was playing listening to the other eps, but this one has a mental sountrack of Snow White going "oh dear!" as her dumb ass runs into trouble

Thoughts on tmagp episode 24

*cough* my sister had a newborn a few months ago. Here’s some red flags about “the health visitor” from today’s episode:

- newborns feed every 2-3 hours, usually 2.5. Idk if this is different in the UK but I don’t see why it would be.

- most babies are born with greyish eyes, which changes over time. If Rupert’s a newborn when she’s talking about his black orb eyes, this is maybe a red flag?

- “I couldn’t scream, I didn’t want to wake him” AHHHHHH oh god the psychological horror of having a newborn aghfjgjfhhhhhh

Very Rosemary’s Baby, but instead of going full satanic panic, “Raising Issues” focuses on the self-sacrificial narrative mothers are told, and how that leads to a dangerous and isolating situation as Patricia ignores every red flag in sight. I had my head in my hands. Honestly, I wish we’d dived deeper into the socioeconomic stuff rather than the body horror because back to back with “A New You” it felt like too similar of a story structure, even though imo they’re meant to be parallels.

23 and 24 have been so similar that they’re definitely intentional contrasts to each other. One’s from Chester talking about how you can long to change yourself so fully only for it to all go wrong, and this one’s from Norris about destroying yourself to support the one you love… I am ill, actually. Screaming crying relistening to the last recording in this case file and finding all the points that are reminiscent of Mag 170 (Recollection).

These lines specifically are making me think. Once again, I am ill.

Chester: “Alesis Newman is leaving this world and whatever comes next – though she may look like me in some ways, though she may carry a part of me with her – she’ll be better. Considering this is the first Norris case file in over 10 episodes (since episode 12, unless I’m wrong) and he’s literally just reading the stuff between recordings, I’m a bit concerned.

Who the fuck is reading this statement and why didn’t they mention it to Celia IMMEDIATELY? If it was Sam, he knows she has a kid and is in a support group, and if it was Celia herself, then idk why she isn’t at least concerned (that’s suspicious, Celia.) I guess Gwen and Alice don’t know about Jack, so they’re off the hook.

ALSO rupert? A red name? Philosopher’s stone alchemical reference? Or just referring to the blood he’s feeding on?

I know I’m gonna see a ton of takes on this episode being like “this is why I’m childfree” and, like yeah, I’m not planning on kids either but this story is such an extension of existing social structures that I hope we talk, at least a little, about the social narratives at work here about pregnancy, parenthood, and childcare.

Albus might be weirded out. Mainly due to not knowing how to deal with affection. Devlin too to a lesser extent. Zed would be the one apologizing for not being around enough. Mak would make it all the more worth it for when he is around.

I think he'd view it as a new adventure they get to go on together.

Albus would probably have an issue making love to someone he genuinely loves. He has sex a lot, sure, but I don't think he could do that to someone he loves. He'd be disgusted with himself for polluting such a wonderful person.

A beige flag coping mechanism of mine is rereading, relistening and rewatching books, podcasts and documentaries about World War One because no matter what the fuck is wrong with my life, at least I'm not scraping Belgian mud from my taint while being shelled into fleshy oblivion. But dear god, do I sometimes experience fierce and inappropriate envy because they have friends and camerades going through the exact same shit at the exact same time. They bled, died, got sick and went insane together. They ate, slept, celebrated and sang together. They might never have known or liked each other in civilian life, but they didn't have to explain the reaper that followed them, for it haunted every man. No one had to explain themselves until they went home.

Now, if we see the reaper haunting us, we have to explain it. If we're lucky, someone will listen, rush out a half assed "I'm sorry" and quickly change the subject. We suffer and die as individuals. But no man was an island in the sea of human misery that is the Great War.

Martin! I almosr skipped this one bc one of my fears is "im in a situation i cant walk/climb/swim away from", but my hands were full so i just let it go. and we get an interruption! i love those

Colony

Okay. So I love Martin right off the bat for unfair meta reasons and for pretty legit diagetic reasons. One, I have a fondness for Alex's voice from listening to Rusty Quill Gaming. I always hear him playing this one shot himbo paladin of Apollo, and it always makes me grin. So im just flat predisposed to feel favorably to anyone voiced by Alex.

But two, so far Jon has been presented as kind of prickly. He sounds unpleasant to give statements to, wretched for work for, and particularly hard on Martin. Maybe its justified, maybe not, we havent had a chance to know. So now we get Martin "on camera" and he is immediately cast as pathetic and aligned with the reader: creeped out by all this spooky shit. He goes on to be a very good boy, doing scary shit bc he knows he needs to do a better job for his boss.

And then, brilliantly, Jon subverts this dick boss vibe thats been building by offering a room to Martin. He takes Martin's concerns very seriously, because he takes legitimate archives concerns very seriously. Weve seen hints of this with his reactions to things like the Lightner books, but this is the first time hes reacted with a sense of urgency. its a ramping up of the tension, now that weve established the tone of the work and some truths about the world. its really interesting that this shit isnt in response to dreamer, a direct threat to his predecessor, but rather a direct threat to one of his subordinates. It says some interesting things about Jon's character, and shifts my expectations on how he might react to future incidents.

ugh. im remembering the other reason why listening to this at work was a no go. The sound mixing on this is so bad that even with my headphones cranked all the way up, i can't hear shit :/

Not much to say about this one, although it was fun to listen to Sasha and Jon lampshade the problems of audio media and regional pronounciations of Calliope. Has anyone ever actually heard it pronounced Callie ope (like cantaloupe)?

Sasha! This is another one where my experiences with Rusty Quill gaming make me predisposed to like and trust Sasha. But since Jon also seems to trust her, that makes me more inclined to believe their opinion of Martin as a bit of a klutz, the one you trip when youre running from a bear, most likely to be the first casuality

Very curious about Michael, cant help but wonder if theyre going to lean into angelic mythology or not. Tuck that in my folder of "things to wait and see about"

A Sturdy Lock

By all rights this one SHOULD get to me. I dont remember if it did on my first listen, but this time around all I really care about is wondering from a writer perspective if all these "other statements" that get mentioned every now and again are already written/planned, or just mechanism to add to the sense of a larger world. And from a reader figuring shit out perspective, I'm starting to wonder if the archive is such a mess maybe on purpose. Like, was Gertrude a baddy (/IS a baddy????). Or maybe Martin is not as inept as he seems and is secretly moving things about 🧐

I LOVE that this one isnt actually about a grey lady. its really fun how they like to set up common tropes and then sideswipe them XD. Plus its a real treat to hear two actors play off of each other. That works so much better for me than suspending my disbelief that grumpy old Jarchivist is recording these statements with such emotion XD

I adore Vincent and Lovely, they’re so fucking funny. Like this man who has only been a vampire 20 years swaggers up with this Dracularian aura like “ah, little one, this place is so dangerous, as am I, a deadly hunter, but look how noble am I, let me save you from this place,” and Lovely is swooning so hard for this that when Vincent appears in their room, pins them to their bed, and nearly bites them, the first thing they do is RETURN to the dangerous abandoned amusement park at night and get caught by Adam “Fuck Around and Find Out” not-Solaire until Vincent is so frenzied he does bite them, leading to Lovely’s kidnapping and torment and Vincent needing to save them, and he sheepishly apologizes and admits his whole thing as been this chuunibyou act and he needs to get with the program and take responsibility and he actually becomes a caring, supportive, loving partner and eventual maker, like???? I unironically adore their story, I have relistened to them the most, they were the first Redacted story I listened to, but I have been on this Earth almost as long as Vincent has been a human AND vampire and I could never call someone “little one” as a flirt, he’s such a silly, silly little man. And I can’t blame Lovely for foregoing every single red flag because frankly I am also charmed by this goofy nerd

My biggest red flag is my favorite Motionless in White album (probably) being Infamous. The one critics hated. That got no radio time. The album chris motionless immensely hates. That no one liked. I love infamous. I love it so much.

And it's not just because Hatefuck is on there and that's the funniest song I've ever heard in my life. Like genuinely Infamous is just so much fucking FUN. The transition from the first song, Black Damask, to Devil's Night makes me SO happy. The creepy crawliness of BD to the foot stomping BAM. BAM. BAM. of DN. It just makes me so happy.

Jotting down some thoughts about Only Friends Episode 4:

spoilers, obviously

That first scene with Ray broke me, that feeling of worthlessness and how everyone must hate you hit a little too hard for me

I was right thinking that Ray is closer to Mew than the others (and maybe vice versa), possibly because Mew is his emergency contact and saved him when he was feeling suicidal; which reminds me of when Ray told Sand that it was his turn to save him after Sand took care of him while he was drunk

That one person's theory that Ray is using Sand as an emotional replacement for Mew, who he already holds on a pedestal and probably is attached to Mew more than he likes Mew, is probably true. Idk I'm not really analyzing but I genuinely feel that Ray uses people as an emotional crutch in order to get things from them that he never got from his own mom - love, compassion, someone to hold

Cheum is so me: "Ray, if I wasn't a lesbian I would love you"

Side note: I love scenes where all four of them are together and doing friend stuff even though they're all backstabbing each other (except Cheum, bless her)

The fact that Boston saw his two close friends kiss and recorded it, kept it for two years without saying anything is so???????? I want to crack open his head and figure out whats wrong with him
