Jasmine and I recently went through the whole Shantae series and have joked about Rottytops and Bolo hanging out or even dating because they're both so stupid and impulsive. This does indeed seem like something they would do... and then blame each other for the inevitable trouble they bring upon themselves for doing so.

My issue with 3h is how much Information there is spread amongst 4 60ish hour campaigns. I firmly believe that's why the discourse exists. People say "LOL DID U PLAY TEH GAEM" and 9/10 they did they just forget that important lore that's only said in one line in one route. I adore 3h but I'd argue it's route split hurt it and it's fandom.

People wanna shit talk fates but honestly in some ways it's more coherent. I feel the information isnt spread out as crazily as it is in 3h. Say what you will about the quality, imo its easier to follow. I just replayed cq while skipping cutscenes and getting all the kids and it took like 10 hours. If you watch them let's say it's like 15. 45 hours for the whole experience versus 50 for 1/4th. Say what you will about fates I can blast through a route easily. Hell I prefer 3h to fates but I play through CQ a lot more often.

I prefer 3h but I totally understand the argument that fates is the better experience. Hell 3h and fates are the same price. 80 usd for every route. In fates you get 3 unique routes. In 3h you get 4.5 routes but most of them are crazy similar. People say you shouldn't play all 3 routes of fates back to back or you'll get burnt out. But 3h is WAY more guilty of that.

Now that's a BIT disingenuous because that's not counting fates dlc some of which is story relevant or the fact that if you don't buy fates correctly you're spending 100 not 80. But like you get what I mean. Also fates has Rhajat which makes it objectively better than 3h soooooooooooo.

Anyway sorry for talking your ear off. I feel fates vs 3h is such an interesting discussion haha.

And I agree with how you see it, because there's so much text spread across 4 routes (each of which lasts like 100 hours on a casual run), and it's fucking insane to be able to keep track of every single thing that happens. And most don't! Which leads to the arguments as you said.

Same on the Fates point, mostly because Fates just has a unifying theme/consistent message no matter the route choice. You'll always encounter doubt from Corrin and bear the consequences depending on the route you choose. Now are all those consequences written well? No. But you're not gonna get people arguing about innocuous shit like with 3H because Fates has definitive substance beyond "no one's truly right in warfare guyz :((("

these are in no particular order because i’m having a hard enough time coming up with ten different fandoms, let alone ranking them.

10: Caleb Widogast, Critical Role [*hurriedly mutters under breath* andyashatoo] - my, uh, dnd character level of Tragic Backstory Life means i relate to, and understand, caleb [and yasha, i can’t pick between them and you can’t make me] heavily. i also really, really, really love unflinching portrayals of grief and mental illness and what that does to you as you deal with, or don’t deal with, it. also i am big gay and caleb is attractive and i WILL die on that hill god dammit.

9: LORD ADMIRAL BABEY Jaina Proudmoore, World of Warcraft - yes i am wow trash, i have been playing for a decade [*long pause while i stare into space and reckon with the fact that its been a decade*], and i have always loved jaina. they very very nearly put her in the same goddamn Traumatized Women Goes PsYchO!1!!111!!!! that they’ve done to sylvanas but by god we’ve escaped that fate [for now...], making her the.... only........... female faction leader of any, uh, relevance who isn’t a barnacle character or undergoing some level of character assassination via bad writing. i could complain for at least five more paragraphs, so i will just end this here and spare everyone. she’s badass and laura voices her and you should watch this right now. 

8: Gollum, Lord of the Rings - yes i know this is a uh, an odd one, but he’s the best goddamn character in the entire series in terms of someone you can really sink your acting teeth into. i did a... god how long was it, ten minute? i think? gollum monologue - 1/3rd i wrote myself, 2/3rds spliced between the LotR movies - for an acting competition and again at a theatre showcase and he is now My Boy. yes i can do the voice. i blew my voice out doing it once but it’s very fun. pretty easy once you figure out how to get into it. 

7: Lup, The Adventure Zone - she’s my absolute favorite character in the whole story, i love her, she’s perfect. i will never forget the jaw dropping horror of that last stolen century episode when you realize and the absolute apeshit delight at her return. 

6: Alistair, Dragon Age: Origins - he’s a sweetie and a dork and he’s Trying His Best and i love him so much. i have to sit on my own hands to avoid romancing him every goddamn playthrough. he’s also the #1 reason i always leave morrigan at the camp, because she’s mean to him and i feel bad. 

5: Utsuki/Kureha, Kuon - another vidya gaem entry bc that’s all i can think of off the top of my head rn. really the game overall, because her story is just half [...ish] of it. her trauma and the rituals she’s undergone warping how she sees herself and experiences the world, namely by seeing herself as her sister, and how it relates to the grudge cycle and the Buddhist concept of complicity, is... fascinating. all of that depends on how you interpret the game and the vast difference between the two storylines, and it’s very hard to explain without context, but. cool shit. 

4: i’m calling it here because it’s nearing midnight and i cannot for the life of me think of four more separate things. i can think of plenty within what i already listed - queen azshara, every single character from critrole, solas because god i love complicated characters, and i couldn’t possibly single out a character from the soulsbornes because what really makes it for me is just the world as a whole so its like... i CAN’T say a fav boss bc they aren’t a favorite character.

Species/Exceed: warbeast (jackal subvariant)

Appearance: As above, dressed in old-fashioned/traditional clothing, often green and simple. carries a satchel over his shoulder that generally contains game boards and whatever he would need for travel (tools, change of clothes, money, etc.) Fluffy hair, tied back. Brown jackal ears, ofc, also has a tail that pokes out from under his tunic (tunic is split in the back so there’s enough room for his tail to move freely. Pointy nails and sharp teeth, very much looks like he’s a wild dog and could fuck you up if he wanted to-- tends to be deeply unnerving to humans. Slit pupils and golden eyes.

Abilities: warbeast ‘sixth sense’ with the ability to track peoples physical responses (eg heart rate) functions as a lie detector, familiarity with technology/vidya gaem, limited magic affinity

Occupation: Traveler, odd jobs. Often works within category of ‘craftsman’ or ‘tutor’.

Born in Disboard (Eastern Federation)

Game Specialties: any sort of strategy or war game, some varieties of gambling (he’s got a killer poker face, comes with 15 years of hiding the fact that ur dead inside)

past/relevant info: when he was younger, hektor challenged another (achilles) who had never lost in battle. the things on the line were: territory and ‘the thing most precious to you’, to make up for the difference in territory size in question. they resulted in a draw. an unwinnable game, both skilled enough to keep their pieces alive but not go any further than that. because the draw and the dance seemed endless without someone plunging headfirst into self-sacrifice, it was declared an equal loss. If no one won, that must mean both lost, right? So, Patroclus died. So, Astyanax and Andromache died. Others took the seats to settle where the territory would go. Hektor, deprived of his family, left. In mourning, he couldn’t really handle staying in his home (soon to be overtaken, anyways, that game too would end a loss, he knew it), and he didn’t know what he could possibly do with himself. Hektor defined his life by his family, and without it he felt deeply purposeless, had a growing emotional void in him that he pastes over with a friendly veneer. Along his travels, though, he came across an Imanity child taken in as a slave worker and essentially impulse grabbed them because he has no idea what else to do with a child in distress. Said child is named Rhys (@/lightsealed) and was raised by Hektor within the warbeast continent, forcing some semblance of normalcy and anchor into his life, which did a great deal to help him deal with losing his family years before.

current pastimes: He wanders disboard with a carefree air, generally traveling with only the things he can carry in a shoulder pack and sometimes Rhys in tow. Hektor still likes learning and seeing new things. To get by, he generally plays games for bets of money or teaches others how to play/improve their gaming ability for a tutor’s fee. A rather straightforward life that results in him having a good many acquaintances/friends in the lower-ranked Exceed. He can also often be found playing “games of no stakes” in cafes, simple rounds of chess or shogi simply for fun, the winner gaining nothing and loser at no real loss.
