Finding the Right Couples Counselling Therapists in Vancouver for Relationship Counselling Therapy
When it comes to relationships, communication is key. However, sometimes it can be difficult to express our thoughts and feelings in a way that our partner understands. This is where couples counselling therapy can be beneficial. By working with a couples counselling therapist, couples can learn new communication techniques and gain insights into their relationship.
If you are looking for couples counselling therapists in Vancouver, you have come to the right place. Vancouver has a number of therapists who specialize in relationship counselling therapy. Here are a few tips to help you find the right one for you:
Look for a therapist who specializes in couples counselling. Not all therapists are trained to work with couples, so it's important to find someone who has experience in this area.
Consider the therapist's approach. There are many different approaches to couples counselling therapy, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and the Gottman Method. Each approach has its own benefits, so it's important to find a therapist who uses an approach that resonates with you.
Check the therapist's credentials. Make sure that the therapist is licensed and has the appropriate training and education to provide couples counselling therapy.
Look for a therapist who is a good fit for you and your partner. You want to feel comfortable talking to your therapist and be able to trust them.
Some of the top couples counselling therapists in Vancouver include:
Susan Blackburn - Susan is a registered clinical counsellor who specializes in couples counselling. She uses the Emotionally Focused Therapy approach and has over 20 years of experience working with couples.
Heather Bach - Heather is a registered clinical counsellor who specializes in relationship counselling therapy. She uses a combination of Emotionally Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches.
Joti Samra - Joti is a registered psychologist who specializes in couples counselling. She uses the Gottman Method approach and has over 15 years of experience working with couples.
Shivani Agarwal: Shivani is a registered clinical counsellor and certified yoga instructor with over 15 years of experience. She takes a holistic approach to therapy, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of a person's life. Her areas of expertise include trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression, and relationships. Shivani incorporates yoga and meditation into her therapy practice to help clients develop greater self-awareness and improve overall well-being.
Remember, finding the right couples counselling therapist in Vancouver is important for your relationship. By taking the time to do your research and finding a therapist who is a good fit for you and your partner, you can work towards building a stronger and more fulfilling relationship.

Is 'Will They or Won't They' about David and Gillian?
I finally got around to reading Will They or Won't They by Ava Wilder, which is a novel about two Hollywood actors (Lilah and Shane) that star in a hit TV show in which their characters are a fan-favorite ship, but the actors famously hate each other. The author is annoyingly coy about who the book is about (if anyone) and in The X-Files fandom, fans have speculated that it's about David and Gillian. So what did I think? (mild spoilers below)
Yes, the book is definitely about Gillovny!
The show Lilah and Shane star in (Intangible) is filmed in Vancouver and is extremely popular. It's also a paranormal show: "Walt's main innovation had been to bring in every mythological creature under the sun, as well as open the show up to the world of larger supernatural conspiracies (government or otherwise)." (pg 34)
Lilah, like Gillian, has short, chin-length red hair.
Shane is described as "beautiful" with "long legs, long lashes, dark hair that fell over his forehead without reaching his eyes. Not just beautiful, but attractive, too." (pg 4)
Lilah and Shane meet before their audition, in a room with all the other candidates. They chat while waiting and then are both hired due to their intense chemistry with each other, which is pretty much how The X-Files audition went.
Both actors are unknowns when they are hired and the show propels them to mega-stardom: "He was the only person who understood what she was going through, because he was going through it, too: the surreal, thrilling, terrifying, one-in-a-million experience of going from nobody to capital-S Somebody practically overnight." (pg 80) This sounds a lot like how David and Gillian describe their relationship.
They famously do not get along on set, meanwhile their on-screen chemistry is ever-present and their characters' slow-burn romance is what hooks the fans: "No matter how the two of them felt about each other when the cameras were off, it was the chemistry between their characters, Kate and Harrison, that made the show worth watching." (pg 16)
The showrunner suggests that Lilah and Shane go to couples counseling, which Chris Carter recommended to David and Gillian.
Lilah and Shane participate in a photoshoot that sounds just like the Rolling Stone shoot, in which they are in bed in minimal clothing, while the photographer takes pictures from above.
Lilah and Shane's characters are known for gazing at each other: "...staring longingly at each other when they thought the other one wasn't looking." (pg 19)
No, it's probably about some other couple or no couple at all.
There's no height difference between the two. In fact, it's specifically stated that Lilah and Shane are almost the same height (and Lilah is taller if she wears heels).
Shane was not interested in being an actor, but was scouted and encouraged to audition for the role of Harrison. He had zero acting experience before the show.
The book opens with Lilah returning to Intangible after leaving the show for four seasons. Which I guess is similar to The X-Files but is a much larger gap than David's absence.
Most of the similarities between this book and The X-Files occur in the first half. Once past that point, the characters are pretty fleshed out and don't seem like they are necessarily based on anyone in particular.
Parting thoughts:
There are so many similarities between Lilah/Shane and David/Gillian and their experience on The X-Files that it almost feels like it has to be about them. I've seen speculation that it's about Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev on The Vampire Diaries, which is also a possibility.
Whether or not it was about David and Gillian, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it if you're into romance novels.
If you read this book, what do you think? What famous Hollywood couple was Ava Wilder basing her story on?

Name: Emmit Hanson Age: 34 Town Occupation: Teacher / Supermarket Keeper Previous Occupation: Actor Redwood Resident Length: Newly Arrived Faceclaim: Chris Colfer
Bullet Points:
Despite being quite adamant that his father leaving didn’t bother him, the more it bothered him. He never told his mother this but he tried reaching out to his dad a few times - once on his sixteenth birthday and once to invite him to his wedding. Both times his father never answered.
A month before Darian was bitten, Darian found a young cat and gave him to Emmit as a gift. Emmit named him Jean. He was the last gift Darian ever gave him.
He has Darian’s and his wedding rings on his necklace and never goes anywhere without them.
Some of his more notable roles were in Music Camp as Kurt McKay for all six seasons, two seasons of Boston Hot as Tony Marks, Eye of the Storm as Carson Hale and Absolutely Gorgeous as Corey Dawes.
Biography:
From an early age, Emmit wanted to be a star. He loved music, he loved movies and he loved plays. When he was five his mother took him to see Les Miserables and he was head over little tiny Converse shoes in love with the lights and the show business. While his mother was incredibly supportive and did her best to get her son into acting lessons and music lessons, his dad was a real man’s man. When Emmit was eight his father left, having moved to Florida from Vancouver, but not before leaving signed divorce papers on the kitchen counter. Honestly, Emmit was fine with that. He never really got along with his dad so it was no skin off his back. His mother was worried, though, and had put him in counseling to work through his father leaving but even the therapist said that Emmit was a well-adjusted kid.
In middle school he got the star role in his first production. It was almost too perfect. Every production after he was either the lead or one of the main cast. The older he grew the more he started to really develop who he was and discovered his sexuality. To the surprise of no one, really, Emmit came out his freshman year of high school as gay. For the first few weeks he was bullied about it but much like the kid he was, he didn’t let it get to him. He was a tough kid and no one was going to get to him. After a while they gave up. It also helped that he became one of the most influential people in the Drama Club and his senior year, he was scouted by a talent agent who landed him in a few small movie roles.
Now Emmit loved the spotlight and he loved the movie business but eventually the fame started to become a bit too much. He took a break from acting to help with his mother who had suffered a heart attack. That’s when he met the handsome nurse who had been tending to his mom, Darian. The two hit it off rather quickly, although Emmit was somewhat new to relationships. Well, real relationships. He found joy in the romance and the dating and the sweet little things. They dated for a few years until Darian finally popped the question. The engagement was a lot shorter as they married in five months. Everything was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
People were starting to come in sick and Darian had been working overtime at the hospital to help out. Emmit, having left the spotlight to support his husband, had been at home watching the news. That’s how he learned about the zombie outbreak. He quickly called the hospital to make sure Darian was okay. He was - thankfully. Darian came home and immediately the two began to plan on how to survive this. For a few months, everything was okay, but as the world changed and began to shut down, they knew they had to move. They couldn’t just hunker down and wait for everything to be okay. So they packed a few bags and began their trek South into the States after hearing about survivor settlements.
Eventually they found a small group that had been out hunting for their settlement and they took Darian and Emmit in. Everything was great, but eventually the settlement fell apart. The leaders were getting a little too totalitarian for their liking. So they left. Darian had a plan - they were going to head to the coast, find an ocean side property and build their own life together where they could grow old together. At least, that was the plan. A few weeks ago while on the road, Darian got bit by a Walker. Emmit stayed with him until he transitioned and when he did, he put him out of his misery. Now on his own, Emmit didn’t know what to do so he figured he would head further South and live the dream that he and Darian always wanted.

Review: Bad Cree by Jessica Johns
I love some folk horror every now and then, so I was delighted to be invited on to Scribe’s blog tour for this new release featuring Native American characters and motifs. Thank you to Patricia at Scribe for sending me this lovely copy!
Mackenzie has been waking up from her strange dreams clutching something from her dreamscape for a few days now. While the items always disappear, she can’t figure out why this keeps happening or why her dreams keep taking her back to a memory before her sister Sabrina’s death a year before. It seems that the crows in the waking world are also following her every move. She knows that she needs to seek counsel from her Aunties -the women who might know what’s happening. Leaving Vancouver, she travels back to the family home in Alberta that she hasn’t visited in a long time. While the family are happy to see her, Mackenzie’s dreams intensify now that she’s back home and she’s pretty sure that they are somehow connected to what happened to her sister.
There is some pretty visceral, violent imagery in this book, so be aware of that before you go into it. I was really intrigued to discover what the connection between Mackenzie’s dreams and the reality of what happened to Sabrina. There’s something eerily creepy about dreams seeping into reality that had me very invested in the story.
And why were the crows suddenly obsessed with Mackenzie? Like her, I was afraid of them at first. In the first dream that we see her have, she kills one of them and wakes up with a crow’s head in her hand. So, it’s the obvious assumption that the birds are out for revenge and I was just waiting for the moment that Mackenzie would be viciously attacked. I’ve never been scared of birds before but a huge murder of crows tailing you everywhere is horrifically intimidating!
There is lots of exploration of the relationships between the sisters, as Sabrina had a twin called Tracey. It transpires that Sabrina was the glue between all three sisters and Mackenzie’s relationship with Tracey isn’t as easy as her relationship with Sabrina was. However, now that there is a mystery to solve, it appears that Sabrina’s death has given her sisters a reason to spend time together and bond over their shared grief. It was really lovely to see Mackenzie and Tracey become closer and heal the wounds that lay between them.
I really enjoyed the Native American folklore and traditions that were embedded in the story. I learned a lot and felt very embraced by Mackenzie’s family of wise, spiritual women. It is ultimately a story about grief, the Native American relationship with death and the importance of sharing quirks and fears with those closest to you.
Bad Cree is a dark, heart-wrenching read that is full of terrifying imagery balanced by the warmth of a loving family. It’s a tale of re-discovering roots and learning to love your own uniqueness while letting go of the past and remembering love.

Why Relationship Counselling Matters
Relationship counselling offers a structured environment where couples can openly explore their feelings and concerns with the help of a trained professional. Many couples find that therapy provides the insight and skills to reconnect and resolve long-standing issues. It isn't just about resolving current conflicts and preventing future ones.
One key benefit of relationship counselling is improved communication. Often, couples struggle because they don't know how to express their emotions or needs effectively. A therapist helps bridge this gap by teaching better communication techniques that promote understanding and empathy. This can be a game-changer in any relationship, whether you're newly together or have been married for decades.
Experience the convenience and support of relationship counselling online with Well Health Counselling. You can easily book a consultation with one of their professional team members directly through their website and begin your journey toward a healthier, more connected relationship today.
Strengthening Emotional Intimacy
Emotional intimacy is the glue that holds relationships together, but it's also one of the first things to suffer when problems arise. Relationship counselling helps couples reconnect emotionally by creating a safe environment for vulnerability. Couples can better understand each other's emotional needs and how to meet them through guided conversations and exercises.
For example, suppose one partner feels neglected or unheard. In that case, counselling can offer a space to discuss these feelings openly, allowing both individuals to understand the root cause and work toward a solution. This process deepens emotional intimacy, leading to a stronger, more connected relationship.
Building Trust: The Cornerstone of Lasting Relationships
Trust is foundational to any healthy relationship. Unfortunately, when trust is broken—whether through infidelity, dishonesty, or other betrayals—it can be challenging to rebuild without professional help. Relationship counselling provides the tools and strategies needed to restore trust step by step.
During therapy, couples work on rebuilding trust by fostering open, honest communication. With a counsellor's guidance, they can address underlying issues that led to the breach and develop new ways to ensure transparency and accountability moving forward.
From Conflict to Clarity: Building Skills for Effective Resolution
Every couple argues, but handling conflicts can make or break a relationship. Relationship counselling helps couples develop healthier ways to navigate disagreements, ensuring that conflicts don't escalate into damaging fights. Therapists teach couples to listen actively, express themselves clearly, and work together toward mutually beneficial solutions.
One of the most effective strategies couples learn during counselling is to argue productively. Instead of allowing tempers to flare, therapy teaches couples to approach disagreements calmly and constructively, ensuring both partners feel heard and respected.
Improving Physical Intimacy
While emotional intimacy is essential, physical intimacy also plays a crucial role in a relationship. Many couples seek relationship counselling when they notice a decline in their physical connection. Counselling can help partners understand the barriers preventing physical closeness, whether emotional, psychological, or stress-related.
Therapists work with couples to address these issues sensitively, ensuring that both partners feel comfortable discussing their needs and desires. By fostering open, clear communication around intimacy, couples can reignite their physical connection in a natural and fulfilling way.
Coping with Life Transitions
Significant life changes—such as having children, career shifts, or moving to a new city—can strain even the most vital relationships. Relationship counselling can help couples navigate these transitions smoothly by offering support and practical strategies for managing stress.
For example, when a couple welcomes a new baby, the sudden shift in responsibilities and sleep deprivation can lead to frustration and tension. A therapist can help new parents adjust to changing roles, ensuring their relationship remains strong during this demanding time.
Final Thoughts
At a mental health counselling in Vancouver, couples gain more than just a space to air grievances—they acquire tools to build stronger, more resilient relationships. Whether you're looking to improve communication, rebuild trust, or navigate a major life transition, relationship counselling at Well Health Counselling can provide the guidance and support you need to thrive as a couple.
Investing in relationship counselling is an investment in your future together. It allows you to address the root causes of your challenges and equips you with the skills to maintain a healthy, happy relationship long after the sessions have ended. With professional guidance, couples can transform relationships, fostering deeper connections and more fulfilling lives.
If you're considering relationship counselling, get started before problems escalate. Whether you're in the early stages of a relationship or have been together for years, counselling in Vancouver can help you create a stronger, healthier, and happier partnership.

"....in response to the American settlement of Oregon and the news of gold in California, the British government established the proprietary colony of Vancouver Island. Then, in 1858, following a rush of underemployed miners from California to the Fraser River, it established the crown colony of British Columbia. As Daniel Clayton puts it, "native space was reproduced as an absolute space of British sovereignty," (2000, 236) although initially, in the aftermath of the Treaty of Waitangi and judicial rulings in New Zealand, officials in the Colonial Office were uncertain about the extent to which British sovereignty in these colonies was burdened by native title (Harris 2002, 15-16).
With the creation of these two colonies, land was framed in a new problematic. Colonies entailed settlers, and settlers required land, which could be got only by dispossessing native people. A relationship based on trade was replaced by one based on land. As their land was taken away, native people had to be put somewhere. A solution with many precedents in other settler colonies was to put them on reserves. Dispossession began in the 1850s and continued through the rest of the century. Physical violence, the imperial state, colonial culture, and self-interest all underlay it
The establishment of colonies on Vancouver Island and the mainland changed the nature of violence there. It had long accompanied the fur trades. . . in the interior, an axiom of the land-based fur trade was that perceived assaults on the personnel or property of the traders would be met with quick, spectacular displays of violence-sovereign power in the Foucaultian sense, though without a validating regime of rights (Harris 1997, ch. 2). Nor was the gold rush peaceable...
...
But with the creation of settler colonies, a new level of organization and calculation - the British military-was built into the equation of violence (Gough, 1984). British warships operated along the coast; a detachment of Royal Engineers was sent out to survey land and maintain order. Such power was more often displayed than used - a few quick and very public hangings of suspected murderers after summary trials on the quarterdeck of one of Her Majesty's warships, or a few villages shelled and destroyed - spectacles intended to instill fear. Officials considered such power "a grand persuasive." Some held that it saved lives by preventing settler-native wars. Frequently, they judged it sufficient to anchor a warship just off a native village and ostentatiously prepare the guns.
In the interior, the space beyond the reach of a ship's guns, the military equation was more balanced. In the 1870s, as settlers were moving in and preempting land, many natives leaders talked of war. Settlers feared, perhaps with justification, that a native uprising could wipe all of them out in a single night. But, as the chiefs knew, a short-term victory was one thing; keeping at bay settlers and the armies that, sooner or later, would back them up was quite another. The results of wars across the border in which native warriors (some from British Columbia) had fought federal U.S. troops, was evidence in hand. Those who counseled war did so out of desperation. One chief put it this way:
A war with the white man will end in our destruction, but death in war is not so bad as death by starvation."
Overall, the balance of physical power lay overwhelmingly with the state.
...
As liberal humanitarian sentiments about the essential oneness of human kind and the opportunity to create a world of civilized, Christian people faded, responsible government came to dominate protection in Colonial Office thought (Metcalf 1996; Porter 1999). In settler colonies, where access to land was the predominant issue, only a hollow form of responsible government would exclude land policy from colonial jurisdiction. In effect, by the late 1840s and 1850s, the Colonial Office had no clear, consistent native policy. As a result, when the colony of Vancouver Island was created, it was readily inclined to turn over the management of native people to the Hudson's Bay Company (which, it thought, had handled them much better than the Americans) and to rely on the judgment of the fur trader-cum-governor (George Douglas), who managed both colonies until his retirement in 1864. Thereafter, land policies were formulated by local settler politicians. The Colonial Office hardly interfered, and in 1871 when British Columbia became a Canadian province, land policy, now constitutionally a provincial responsibility within the Canadian confederation, remained in the hands of these same politicians. The state created a framework for the ordered development of a settler society, but did not, itself, provide the momentum for the development of that society or for the dispossessions and repossessions of land that accompanied it. When power passed to local politicians, they reflected the values and interests of their constituents.
...
An Indian reserve commissioner, charged with laying out reserves, said this to a native audience on Vancouver Island in 1876:
Many years ago you were in darkness killing each other and making slaves was your trade. The Land was of no value to you. The trees were of no value to you. The Coal was of no value to you. The white man came he improved the land you can follow his example-he cuts the trees and pays you to help him. He takes the coal out of the ground and he pays you to help him-you are improving fast. The Government protects you, you are rich-You live in peace and haveeverything you want.-(cited in Harris 2002, 108)
At the time, few if any white settlers would have disagreed. There were arguments about how quickly native people could be assimilated and, therefore, about how much land should be allocated to them. Some settlers, biological racists to the core, considered natives utterly lazy, degenerate, and unredeemable; but a few found much to appreciate or pity in native lives, were well disposed toward native people nearby, and now and then supported their pleas for more reserve land. But even kindness tinged by an educated, romantic appreciation of nature and, therefore, of lives assumed to live close to nature was situated within the assumptions of the civilization/ savage binary."
- Cole Harris, "How Did Colonialism Dispossess? Comments from an Edge of Empire," Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Vol. 94, No. 1 (Mar., 2004), p. 169-171.
