🌟 1998 Furby Re-Lashing Guide 🌟

A visual step-by-step guide to my own process for giving 1998 Furbies lashes that retain the classic look. There may be other guides and methods out there, this is just my own way to do it!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Detached Eyelids ( guide for removal: CLICK HERE )

13mm D-Curl Lash Extensions ( see photo )*

Mod Podge

Tacky Glue

X-Acto Knife

Small Paint Brush

Q-tip

Lightweight Paper

SHARP Scissors

Clean Water

Washcloth or Paper Towel

Optional, Ruler with cm/mm marks & Marker or Pen * 13mm will be closest to original length, I would not recommend anything longer than 15mm unless you want the lashes to really look insanely long.

Step 1:

Use the x-acto knife to gently peel up an eyelash foil strip, and be careful not to disturb the lashes. Go slowly and only handle the strip by the sticky foil. You will only need one strip for a pair of lashes!

Step 2:

Place the sticky strip on the lightweight paper, I put it close to the edge because it'll be easier to cut out later. Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the base of the lashes on the strip to secure them. This is an important step, there isn't much else keeping them in place, otherwise!

It's hard to wait, but let the glue dry before handling the strip again, I suggest a good 30 minutes or so.

Step 3:

Now that the glue has dried, cut out the paper around the strip and very carefully trim the foil and paper at the sides and underneath the curl of the lashes. Do this slowly, so you don't accidentally snip the lashes, you ONLY want to trim back the paper+foil. This will make them appear more flush with the eyelid when glued in.

Step 4:

Optionally, use a ruler to find the center of the strip and mark it with a marker, I used a Sharpie because it dries instantly. It's possible to eyeball this, but I like them to be as even as possible.

Snip the strip in half, very sharp scissors will prevent the foil from bending or warping. Again, be careful not to snip the lashes themselves! It's ok if you lose one or two in this process, as long as they still look relatively clean and even once split.

Step 5:

Apply a drop of tacky glue to the back of each eyelid and use the Q-tip to spread it in a thin, sticky layer. The eyelids have a little trench you can use as a guide for placement.

You can repeat this process if you wish with the top of the lash strip where it will be applied, as well, to make it stick better. I haven't tried this myself, yet.

Place the base of the lash strip over the tacky glue and press it into position, I use the backs of my thumb nails to hold them firmly while the glue sets. It make take some effort and patience to get them to stay in the curve, just try not to slide them around.

Step 6 (Final):

After the tacky glue has had some time to dry, I like to apply a final coat of Mod Podge over the paper and underside of the eyelids to seal and protect everything. Give this 30 minutes to an hour to fully dry before re-assembling your Furby!

✨ Voila! Fresh new eyelashes! ✨

They won't look exactly like the original, but close enough for me. I'm sure the process can be improved in some ways, so if you have any feedback please share it in comments or tags!

Preparing to depart

Disregard everything I said about the structure of our days from the last post. After a date had been selected to have the ship sea ready, the work got more intense. We still get a 30 minute MAX lunch break (barely enough time to get through the food line, shove food down our gullets, and wash dishes), but our 15 minute coffee breaks are gone. It’s go go go from 8-6, and then go again after supper if things aren’t complete. We’re also doing this 7 days a week. It’s exhausting. At the same time it’s still cold here and we want to get the fuck out. My body could use a day off though. I’m sore in weird places and my hands are getting destroyed by constant cuts and friction. The cold, bleach water from dishes, and painting solvents aid in causing skin cracks on my fingers that get caught on everything. Rope splinters are surprisingly painful and hard to get out. It’s a lot different from lab work.

There are really big jobs now. Loading the ship with everything we need, might need, and things people really need in the South Pacific and South Africa (donated clothes, books, cookware, many lawn mowers for Pitcairn for some reason). Massive quantities of food.

I’m on the rigging team that has been bending on the majority of the sails, the stragglers will go on when we’re underway. It’s pretty crazy to get a safety training on working aloft, and the next day be climbing around and doing work in very awkward positions 50+ feet above the deck of the ship. We’re harnessed and clip ourselves in when stationary, but that’s not possible when climbing up or transitioning onto the yards. The dangers are real, but I think that actually makes us (definitely me) be way more conscious about being safe, and planning ahead where every body part will be and where the lanyard will be clipped in. Its colder and windier up there, but it’s AWESOME! We put up around 10 sails, and I worked on getting the big square sails on. They must weigh a couple hundred pounds. They get tied onto a rope going over the mast, and a few folks hoist them up to the yards. With 3 people on each side and one in the middle, the ends get passed down and lashed to the end of the yard. This entails carrying the weight of half the sail while leaning over the yard, and shimmying along a wire rope to hand it off to the next person. There’s ropes and blocks galore that may require weaving through while making sure our tethers don’t get tangled up. Pulling a rope with one hand in one direction, and pulling on the sail with the other hand in the opposite direction, we get it centered and as tight as possible against the yard. Then we lash it in place. With just a lot of wraps with some small rope through holes in the top of the sail it stays in place. I also got to relash some blocks that were askew after test setting the sails. This is a sail training ship, and most of the training is by doing. I’m starting to trust myself a little more, but a lot of the time I’m searching for “rules” on how to do things—which don’t exactly exist. Very very different from lab life.

Still a lot to stow, and more rigging to go….

With the area shaking around them softly, Qingque was glad that everyone there was so heavy. While they were bigger than most, there were a few people that still outsized them by a long shot, meaning that the floors and roads there would be able to handle them without too much trouble, if any. Still, even though Qingque had been there before, and had seen all the people…being one of the huge ones made everything seem so different.

With her belly bouncing, being pushed forward by her massive thighs as they rolled over each other, gigantic rear pressing against the floor and Alice, Qingque found her way to the restaurant. Thankfully, the double doors were just wide enough for the two of them to go through one by one, even if a little tight. Asking for a table, the two would be sat down in divots so they wouldn’t be sat so tall thanks to their huge behinds, but…weren’t given menus.

Heaving herself up with some groans to mark the effort, Qingque stood still as best she could so she could get used to her size. She didn’t like it, but…she didn’t dislike it. Even if it was annoying shaking so much, being forced around by her own flab jiggling and wobbling so much. Listening to Alice’s suggestion, Qingque took a few deep breaths as she considered it.

Groaning as a pair of Foxian women slammed by her side, thumping into her before apologizing and going deeper into the casino, Qingque groaned and shook her head. People didn’t need to be rude just because she wasn’t a long life species…

“…wehll…lesh go, shen. Fhu Shuan comesh here oftwen, sho…I dohn’t wanna shee her rwight away…”

“Foshian fwood?”

Alice is licking her lips at the thought, scanning her eyes amongst the crowd as they start to half waddle and half roll out of the casino, thumping along the wide roads of the Xinazhou, thudding down past shipping lanes as Alice let Qingque lead the way forward. Something is dawning on Alice as she looks around the area they’re in, something stirring in her as she realizes something.

While there were people of all shapes and sizes about, for most of the longer life species… not a single one is under a quarter ton, with most foxians pushing a much higher weight. The cuisine they had to offer had to be amazing if they all ate so much of it.

Giggling, she reached out, letting her belly push up against Qingque, her hands sinking into her bloated shoulders as she hurried her along.

“Wahy didn’eh you shay sho? Huwwy up~!”

ok, my other stark family hot take is that i don’t think sansa was really much closer to robb than jon. we know robb/sansa also had a goodbye hug with the snowflakes in his hair, and that he led her, arya, and bran, into the crypts for his and jon’s cute ghost prank. but literally anything else between them is fanon, not canon. 

yeah, we know sansa thought of her big brothers very differently and would’ve wanted more interactions with robb and valued them more, but the question is what did he think/feel about her? without a pov, the best clue that we have (besides his refusal to trade jaime, which i do think he felt little choice about) is his reaction to sansa’s last letter to wf. where he blames her for the whole thing, not just arya’s exclusion, and needs luwin to point out these must have been cersei’s words that sansa was made to write. which is, um, a not great sign about the state of their relationship imho. my impression is more that sansa admired and idolized him from afar even when they still lived in the same castle. with the 4ishyr age difference and the highly gendered activity structures of their days i just don’t see much time for individual bonding. jon/arya’s first scene happens when arya runs away from her oh-so-important femimine lessons and jon is being excluded from male bonding, neither of which would apply to sansa or robb. sansa wasn’t interested in any “boyish” activities like arya was with all her brothers, and i see no evidence that robb would have interest in whatever more feminine playtimes sansa and her girly-girl cohort would get up to. 

lest anyone misunderstand and think I am perpetuating the myth of sansa an outsider within the stark household, never really one of them, i’ll just add that there is one starkling who appeared to have an equally warm relationship with both sisters and that’s bran. which makes sense since he was the one closest in age to the girls and is known for being a sweet kid who gets along well with most people, as evident from his first chapter. then there’s rickon too, who i’m sure sansa also had a good enough relationship with, but there’s really only so much closeness to be had between a tween and a toddler. (and lbr, rickon/any other starkling is mostly fanon too. all we know of him pre-abandonment is that he liked sweets, which is true of almost every little kid who can eat sweets. the “wildness” he’s primarily defined by was not an intrinsic distinguishing characteristic when the family still lived together, but a new trait developed only after they split as a response to the situation he was far too young to understand.) 

though as much as i’d like more bran and sansa fandom solidarity, it’s not like i’m saying everyone should focus on their relationship either, regardless of personal preference for other characters or fanon, bc that would be obnoxious.

Dont apologize, i love these tags!! Loving the concept of Kageyama receiving advice so specific and tailored for dealing with Oikawa that it literally doesnt apply to any other relationship, that would be so funny. Oikawa changing nationalities just to keep competing against everyone stays iconic. Also oooh i like what you said about Kagehina's rivalry being fostered within Karasuno, so them being rivals while on the same team (like team jpn) is second nature to them. In contrast with Ushioi, whose rivalry was always as opponents. So really it makes perfect thematic sense that the ushioi rivalry would persist the way it did in canon!

Ushijima-Oikawa parallels with Kageyama-Hinata

To me, Ushijima and Oikawa are like a tragic parallel to Hinata and Kageyama. If Oikawa had gone to Shiratorizawa then he and Ushijima could've had the partnership that Kagehina had. But because he didn't, they will never know what it's like to make the other feel invincible.

Shipping goggles aside, the parallels have to be intentional (haikyuu is too well-written for it to be just a coincidence): Both Ushijima and Kageyama were framed as naturally gifted volleyball monsters. Meanwhile Oikawa and Hinata believed that they were just average (even though the people around them know that they have their own strengths). Ushijima was the one who kept winning against Oikawa, just like how Kageyama was always ahead of Hinata. Both Hinata and Oikawa went abroad to gain experience so they could finally beat their rival. Ushijima and Kageyama are both awkward, intimidating, and ASD-coded while Hinata and Oikawa are framed as easy-going extroverted chatterboxes. These pairs are literally so similar it's crazy. Look at them and tell me it's not intentional

It also makes sense when you consider that their playstyles are also complementary. Kageyama and Hinata were a good match for each other because Hinata needed Kageyama's precision and Kageyama needed someone agile to match his own speed. But Ushijima's only requirement is for the ball to be set high and the right distance from the net so it's easy to hit. And which setter is known for dedicating themselves to their spikers, giving them easy sets? Oikawa. They truly could've been a terrifying duo.

I think Furudate was trying to show what Kageyama and Hinata could've been if they didn't team up. They'd still be strong, sure, but not invincible like they were in Karasuno. (as opposed to the Miya twins, who were supposed to show what they could've been like if they had an equal from the very beginning)

But in the end it all worked out for everyone! They all got to play on the world stage together. Ushijima and Oikawa even had their reconciliation at the all stars match (still waiting on the Oikawa-Kageyama reconciliation please please please 👀). They're all happy so I suppose it isn't actually tragic. I just cant help but wonder what could have been if Ushijima and Oikawa learned what it's like to be each other's greatest ally. Hinata and Kageyama were so lucky to have found each other after all.
