Outrageous Skateboard: When Skateboarding Was Still "Outrageous"

Before CalStreets, before Boarder.Labs, there was Outrageous Skateboard—a bastion of urethane rebellion nestled across from Seylynn Bowl in North Vancouver. This was more than just a shop; it was a shrine to the gospel of skate, where every deck, wheel, and sticker held a story (and probably a scratch or two from Seylynn's legendary snake run).

Then, the unthinkable happened. The Skateboarder Magazine era came to a screeching halt. The bible of the shred was no more. And in its place? Action Now, a magazine that seemed determined to jam as much BMX, speed racing, and even gasp alternative sports into its pages as possible. For skaters, it was like finding out your favorite punk band was now doing disco remixes.

This was our counter copy—the battle-worn artifact that sat on the shop counter, flipped through by every skater who came in, each shaking their head in disbelief. "Sixty mph downhill fairing bikes? What is this madness? Where’s my backyard vert coverage?"

Sure, there was still some skate love—Stacy Peralta was named Skateboarder of the Year, and The Gold Cup Pro Bowl was featured—but the writing was on the wall. The ‘80s skate recession was in full swing, and BMX was elbowing its way into the spotlight like an overzealous roller disco crew at a punk show.

Still, Outrageous Skateboard held strong, defying the trends, keeping the true skaters stocked and stoked. It wasn’t just a shop; it was a war room for the die-hards who refused to trade their decks for pedal-powered contraptions.

And hey, we survived. Skateboarding came back stronger than ever, and BMX? Well… let’s just say it never quite stole all our pools.
