HC that Rei smells like Souya's favourite season: cinnamon, apple and black tea. Souya likewise carries the scent of his namesake: ume, vanilla and lavender.

In honor of their Spring and Winter aesthetics, respectively, I raised a Leafeon (Rei) and a shiny Glaceon (Souya) from Eevees.

Look at Souya's stats once he reached 100 😭😅 I haven't spent a single Calcium on him. It was 299 when I used one. In contrast, Rei has so-so Atk ....

Rei has a Mild nature with a Hates to lose trait. Fitting, I guess. He can be very competitive when he wants to (and there's also the line that all shogi players hate losing).

Souya has a Calm nature with Highly curious trait. I think I really lucked out on this one. Finding a shiny eevee with a Calm nature, no less. Very Souya-coded for real.

Quality is crust af, but this is still one of my favourite among the mock manga scenes that I made of them. It's also one of my earliest works on the ship.

For this one, it's where Rei and Souya became friends after the White Storm arc and texted each other. HC that Souya opened up the conversation by asking for help in buying the snacks Rei gave everyone in Chapter 98 (which was from Mikazuki-dou). After that, Souya would ask Rei to show him around nearby cafe and stuff, since he doesn't usually hang around Tokyo after matches.

These btches gay and they don't even realize it after like, six volumes.

This scene was Souya attending a summer festival for the first time.

HC where Souya likes to do many things with his hands; shogi, origami, cooking.

Rei goes with him to the supermarket and Souya would pull on his sleeve or turn to him, tilting his head to the side as if to ask, "Which flavor do you like? Beef or chicken for the weekend? Regardless of the results, Rei-kun should have a hearty meal, and I've been looking up some recipes I think you might like."

And at the beginning Rei would be fine with anything, but slowly comes to terms with the fact that this person here, appreciates his opinions and clearly wants them to enjoy meals together. "Souya-san is currently studying recipes from this Korean cookbook, right? I think I saw a number of recipes that recommended this brand of fermented cooking wine. We should get it before going home."

HC where one or both of them would idle away with origami. Variations to the crane figure, more complicated shapes—mindlessly folding the paper according to muscle memory accompanies remembering the moves made during the recent match. Souya would make a dog for Rei just to tease him for that time the workshop group viewed him as a jack russell terrier. While Rei would fill the table with paper cranes of various sizes. There's a lion for Shimada, a cat for Momo, and different origami flowers that Hina taught him how to make.

Okay but ReiSouya with one-sided ShimaSou in the shigatsu AU

Shimada and Souya met when they were children. Back then, Shimada was playing the violin against Souya in the same competition. There wasn't any animosity between them, only mutual awe and admiration. Shimada in particular was so taken by Souya, he'd declared to him that he'll marry the other boy when they grow up. And Souya was like, But I'm a boy? They became friends over music and surprisingly, shogi. The long distance from Kyoto to Yamagata made trips impossible and so they only talked through letters or during contests. Shimada found himself no less enamored with Souya throughout the years from when he first saw him.

Thus, when Souya had to move to Tokyo for high school, he jumped at the chance to take him inside their house—which did not happen as the boy instead had to rent his own apartment. Nevertheless, the two were happy around each other. Even though Shimada swapped the violin for a cello at some point, this only gave them the chance to play with each other as a duo. Souya's deafness to anything but music did not deter Shimada from continuing to be friends with the boy. He long understood how Souya has always expressed himself through his music.

In his first year of high school, Souya was introduced to Rei, another one of Shimada's friends. Souya's curiosity about the pianist started from his fascination with the other's music. But when he found out that he connected to him in a way others never did, he latched onto Rei. He wanted to see him play the piano again with brilliance in his eyes and a smile to his face.

With the limited time he had in this world, he went out on trips with Rei under the guise of wanting to explore Tokyo, and urged him to play with him as an accompanist, to slowly coax him back to the stage he missed. "Silence is meant to be filled by people like us." Rei's longing to connect with Souya drew his hands to the piano again, to hear the applause of the audience again. At one point, the image of his strict adoptive father was replaced with the family that first taught him to love music. And Rei looked forward to Souya's exhausted but softly smiling face looking back towards him after a performance.

Unfortunately, Souya's illness did not progress favourably. Rei and Shimada had to find out eventually, and Souya made his choice to take the risky surgical procedure if it could give him the best chance at living. During a conversation where Rei realized his feelings for a dying Souya, Shimada confessed the same. He had never quite gotten past his feelings for the boy. But recently, he grew to believe that there was no one else who could reach him except for Rei. Only his music and his whole being perfectly reflected the brilliant, yet transient existence of one Souya Touji.

With heaviness and hope in his heart, Rei visited Souya in the hospital for what would be the last time.

Rei's green eyes and Souya's slate grey ones; the way people literally associate Souya with frost/snow/winter imagery and the fact that the kanji for winter is in his name while Rei's surname has the character for Paulownia tree which blooms in spring—

watched Old Fashion Cupcake and I couldn't help but think how reisouya could fit the narrative haha

Rei has a bit of Togawa's impulsiveness (re:chapter 170 and ~100) and were he not burdened with family issues and turning to shogi for survival, he has plenty moments where he just acts like a normal teenager. He definitely looks like a young applicant that gets a crush on a certain white-haired panel-member-turned-boss who thinks himself too old for romance and sweets shops. "No, Souya-san I definitely find you attractive—I mean I found your attachment, thanks." But it would be cute for reisouya to consider each other as their solace.

Meanwhile Souya, ah, we don't have much of an opportunity to explore his character in the manga aside from him being generally nice and accommodating even with Tama-san. But from what I can see from his thoughts and manner of speech in volume 13 and chapter 168-169 (raw versions), he's just a guy who does what's expected of him, gets tired and sleepy after playing shogi, buys souvenirs for his family and tries to enjoy sound when he can. I have this HC that he hated the rain because, apart from canonically being described to dislike distractions (like noisy children), rain drowns out every other sound in the surroundings on a day when he could have been able to hear.

As for his similarity with Nozue, I think in-universe Souya would more or less have the same worries as an aging bachelor, minus being afraid to take higher positions at work (because Souya seems sufficiently passionate with his work as a professional player and continues to challenge and defend titles). If he weren't deaf, perhaps he could have been more outspoken and as I imagine, a bit childish. Sweet tooth ? Could be out of necessity since he had to consume much glucose, but then there's the scene where he eagerly ate the tea cakes from Rei, even in front of work.

Rei being the assistant manager to financial department manager Souya, working closely with him and looking out for his boss even on off-hours. He finds out Souya can be a bit of an air-head, but is genuinely nice and even makes extra inarizushi during lunch for Rei because he liked them that one time the whole staff went to a sushi restaurant. But Rei isn't so sure about pursuing his crush on the other man, because he sees Souya being close with the engineering and logistics department managers (Dobashi and Shimada). There was also that one scene of Souya drunk in a makeout session with the other department manager holding his waist tightly to push him against their front. What could Rei offer, in his youth and inexperience?

Outside of work, Rei and Souya meet up in an online MMO, without either of them knowing the other's true identity. Rei found Souya as a beginner and helped him around. He later finds out Souya is actually a day-one veteran who quit the game a long time ago but is getting used to the new updates and meta. Nevertheless, the two hit it off with their similar personalities and Souya catches himself getting fond of the other player. Meanwhile, Rei doesn't want to admit it but the other's personality makes him think of a more verbal and teasing version of his boss (and crush) and guiltily maintains the image in his head.

After all, what are the odds that your in-game crush is also your real-life boss?

Rei only discovered the truth when, during a time that he had to leave papers at Souya's desk by himself, one of the (smaller) windows opened was a screenshot of their most recent raid, showing the exact numbers of the damage his own character dealt. He now wondered whether it was a sign that Souya already knew Rei was his in-game friend or was fate really playing jokes again.

WIP where everything is the same except Rei turns into a cat sometimes

Okay but AU where Rei turns into a cat randomly, but he still has to go to the shogi hall and the Kawamotos.

Thankfully, it doesn't happen during school days or matches. The sisters somehow know its him when he visits (and gets spoiled with pets). He learns how nice and warm it feels to huddle with the other nyas.

But the other professional players just watch on as a black and white cat with square glasses waltzes in the printing room to get copies of game records and even sometimes join them in the waiting room. The cat gets his own board and pushes the pieces into place. Unfortunately with paws, it makes picking up pieces difficult. So, the other players help him move around the pieces he paws at. Not Gotou though—he's a secret softie for cats, but this one wants to claw his face off.

One day, the Meijin visits to sign certificates. A curious cat made its way to his table, carrying a packet of matcha daifuku from Mikazuki-dou. Souya sees the other players with the same snack, so he deems it safe to eat. (Has this happened before?)

Giving in to his cat tendencies, Rei loafs on the tabletop and nods to sleep. Souya couldn't resist petting the cat in its sleep and intermittently nuzzling into the fur, to the point the chairman had to relocate Rei to the waiting room (yes he has a bed there already, courtesy of Shimada).

When he woke up, he's in the lap of the Meijin himself, on a cab to Kyoto. He just resigns himself to fate and goes through the motion of walking, eating and playing shogi with Souya. About to go to sleep, Souya places Rei beside him on the futon and throws the cover over both of them.

Suddenly, a cloud of dust poofs and out of it emerges a full-sized, very-much-human—but thankfully clothed—Rei, whose face is mere centimeters away from Souya's own shocked one.
