Regressor!Thorin Headcanons

(with cg!Bilbo)

Thorin is a toddlerspace regressor and regresses anywhere between three to five (or the Dwarven equivalent of three to five at least). Basically to a time before Smaug, since they had to flee from Erebor when he was quite young and he had so much pressure placed on his shoulders.

Even though regression is pretty common among elves and far from unheard of for dwarves, Thorin still hides it. He's supposed to be king, and he knows little boys can't be kings—it wouldn't be fair to his people, he thinks. So for a long time he ignores the need altogether, his regression leaking out in small ways (mostly through his temper or in the form of nightmares).

It isn't until his journey to reclaim his home does the metaphorical pot finally boil over after years of being ignored. Most of the company know to leave him alone at night, but no one gave Bilbo the memo. So when he inevitably has a nightmare and wakes up crying, he's surprised to see the hobbit in front of him. Hadn't he set up his bedroll far away enough for the others not to hear him? Apparently not.

Thorin might have been able to shove down his feelings and yell at him to leave, but he finds he can't do it. Not when Bilbo carefully wipes away his tears, tucks his hair behind his ears, and quietly croons how it will all be okay. That he's safe, that he has him. Suddenly the little boy he's been suppressing for years comes to the surface and it's only too easy to cling to Bilbo as he rocks him. To tell him about his bad dream when asked, nodding very seriously and sniffling when Bilbo agrees that dragons are quite scary indeed.

It's kind of unspoken after that, but Bilbo clearly takes it upon himself to mind after Thorin when he thinks he needs it (and nine times out of ten he's right). Things like setting aside a little extra food for him and making sure he eats, or brushing his hair. He even encourages him to curl up next to him at night so he can keep away the bad dreams (and Thorin winds up using him like a teddy bear).

Despite his fears that he's letting them down, the company is nothing but supportive. Their king's regression was basically an open secret anyways, but none of them have ever seen him so openly small. Somehow, Bilbo draws out the little prince when no one else could. On the days that the pair of them remain at the back of the party, Thorin holding onto Bilbo's hand as the hobbit tells him stories, the others step up where needed—most often Balin or Dwalin take the lead.

Also, it goes without saying that tiny Thorin is quick to steal everyone's hearts, but Bilbo remains his favorite despite everyone's coddling. He only ever puts up with Bilbo coddling him anyways. Everyone else gets The PoutTM.

😖 dooo you have any *buries face in hands* regressr!thorin and cg!bilbo headcanons.... i just adore ur lotr ones and im starving for content, if there are any tolkien agere blogs out there reading this ask if it goes thru.... please help me im down here.....

Anon, we are all starving for Tolkien agere. But there's no need to hide your face! I cannot tell you how excited I was when I received this request (though I can say there may have been some excited kicking and hand waving). Thorin is my favorite character from The Hobbit, and I've wanted some regressor content for him for awhile. Never figured anyone else did though! So this request was definitely for my fifteen year old self when I was at the height of my Tolkien obsession and craving some tiny Thorin.
