We were coming to the end of our portrait session at Nelson Mandela Park Public School and some of the staff were pacing a little nervously urging us not to pack up just yet. When they ushered in this kid there was a palpable wave of excitement among the teachers. This was no ordinary student, this was Mustafa Ahmed aka Mustafa the Poet.⁠ ⁠ At this point he was already a celebrity in Regent Park with a growing profile across Toronto. Within the next few years he'd be appointed by Justin Trudeau to a youth culture panel, name-checked by Drake, working with Lorraine Segato and Thompson Egbo-Egbo and named as Toronto's poet laureate. From there he's gone on to collaborate with Brendan Canning, Drake, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes, James Blake and Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli. Honestly, in wanting to give you a sense of the kids we photographed at NMPPS that day in 2009 I could use any of a couple of hundred photos we took that day - they are all amazing. It's one of the most profound experiences of this project - and particularly with our work in schools over the years.⁠ ⁠ Toronto's Luminato Festival began building in awareness of the Six String Nation project in the 2008 edition of the festival with our mural on the back of Lee's Palace (photo coming later) and then really ramped it up for 2009. We were involved in various public-facing parts of the festival but our project with Nelson Mandela Park Public School that unfolded over a couple of weeks really tied everything together. It included a couple of presentations to different grade groupings at the school in the incredibly diverse Regent Park neighbourhood downtown, songwriting workshops with the wonderful Katherine Wheatley, a partnership with the community recording studio to record the kids' songs, a portrait session at the school, a presentation for the parent community, a public performance with the kids at Yonge-Dundas Square and more portraits at the Hard Rock Cafe on the square.⁠ ⁠ We were so moved by the whole experience that we proposed commemorating it with an addition to the case. And finally today for this series related to the Nelson Mandela Park Public School collage that covers the headstock pillow in our Calton Case, Jessica Dargo Caplan. She was the education and outreach coordinator for the Luminato Festival back in 2009. Although I'm sure she had a lot else on the go, it felt like she was laser focussed on letting Six String Nation have as big an impact as it possibly could on the festival that year.⁠ ⁠ The NMPPS project with the songwriting, recording, portraits, community and school presentations, the other outreach events we did in different parts of the city, the choir performance at YDSq, the Hardrock photo sessions, the portrait exhibit at the Roots Festival HQ and the creation of the NMPPS contribution itself were all in some way due to her tireless energy.⁠ ⁠ I've always felt that the Six String Nation project had so many possible applications and it's often frustrating to have people try to pigeon-hole it. Jessica was one of the first people I encountered who saw the project the way I did and it made the festival incredibly special for us. Luminato's Jessica Dargo Caplan wanted to include songwriting workshops in the multi-week program she was planning around the festival with Six String Nation and Nelson Mandela Park Public School in Regent Park and asked if I had anyone in mind. Longtime friend-of-the-project Katherine Wheatley is not only a wonderful songwriter and guitar player but has long been a teacher and coach for budding songwriters - adults and kids. And as someone who'd played Voyageur on many occasions and knew its story she'd be a perfect fit.⁠ ⁠ We have lots of great portraits of Katherine with Voyageur where you can see her a bit better, but this one taken with some of the kids she worked with at NMPPS is my favourite - the look on the faces of those students she got to know through their work together is absolutely priceless. ⁠ ⁠ She worked with a few different pods of kids and did, I think, three or four songs. They were all recorded and I would love to hear them again. She also played Voyageur as she lead the NMPPS choir in a performance of one of those songs amidst throngs at Yonge-Dundas Square as part of Luminato 2009.
