six hundred and seventy one: solo
I can’t feel my arms. Of all the feelings, that is currently the most pronounced. I keep making typos, keep having to backspace, which means my thoughts are slower, more deliberate.
I just finished painting three of the four walls of my new room in my new home in Somerville, MA. It’s a gorgeous house, with so much potential, but this first week has been full of cleaning and mending. My room, in particular, was especially lived in. The walls were decorated with many industrial staples and some hardened adhesive putty. After removing that, I knew I had to paint. Yuan asked me to describe the stains, but it’s difficult: partly from grease, partly from old wall doodles, partly from some careless life I can’t really understand.
Now, the room is clean, more open. I ran out of paint, so my mother is bringing me a sari to hang as a tapestry. Her and my brother and Vivian are coming to celebrate my 26th birthday with me -- which I keep forgetting is really happening.
Today, I ate ice cream for breakfast. I wish I could say I did that because I wanted to eat ice cream. But it was more because I didn’t have the time to go buy new groceries (because the refrigerator is still a mess from the old tenants), because I needed to eat something, and because ice cream was the most densely caloric food I have. That was almost seven hours ago. I’m waiting for my dinner now, which my mother encouraged me to order out for and which makes me feel guilty and indulgent.
I am hungry, which is not a feeling. It’s a need. I knew food would be something hard for me to keep track of on my own, but it’s scary to realize how far I can go without stopping to eat. Or worse, even after realizing, how I can decide that eating is less important. Which means maybe that my body is less important.
Obviously that’s not true. I guess I’m writing this more to remember, to have some accountability. On Tuesday, classes start. Now that it’s all happening, I am nervous, which everyone is saying is normal. What I’m most looking forward to is having a real rhythm here. Right now, my life has been defined by home repair and orientation. I know when I look back, I’ll want to make a joke about all of this. But in this moment, I am sore and bruised and hungry and, despite all of this, eager.
