The Scottish Boy by Alex de Campi - 5/5 stars

This book managed to rip my heart out at least 3 times. I loved it. Medieval enemies-to-lovers slow burn; very romantic. Kinda read like fanfiction at times but in a good way. 10/10 would read a follow-up love story about Arundel and Captain Wekena. If you like Captive Prince, give this one a try.

Reforged by Seth Haddon - 4/5 stars

Pretty good bodyguard romantasy. Ironically CS Pacat blurbed this one (another am-I-in-the-matrix moment). The world was interesting and I enjoyed the politics, though they're definitely not as complicated as other SFF politics I've gone feral over (see: Captive Prince, Winter's Orbit, A Memory Called Empire). I ordered the sequel after I finished this.

The Doctor's Date by Heidi Cullinan - 4/5 stars

A Power Unbound by Freya Marske - 5/5 stars

Where do I start? I love, love, LOVE A Marvellous Light. It's one of my favorite books ever. None of the rest of the books in the trilogy could live up to it, really, because it's so good. You'll notice I rated this one 5 stars though, because quite honestly I fell prey to a bit of The Academy Paying The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Its Due syndrome. I did love this book and thought it was better than A Restless Truth (which I still loved!) but part of that is, quite frankly, just due to the fact that I prefer m/m romance to f/f romance.

Anyway. This was such a good finale to the trilogy. I loved that the romance was a giant middle finger to purity cultists. I loved that one of the mains was Italian. I loved finally getting the story of what happened to the Alston twins. One thing I thought was really cool was how, viewed from the outside, you totally get why Edwin is such a loner. I really admire from a writing perspective how Marske pulled that off.

I feel like there's a lot to be said about what Marske was trying to SAY with this book, but I definitely need to reread it first before I can articulate any of it. The purity culture stuff is obvious, but the magic system too. I feel like Jack when he's almost able to connect everything in his mind into a bigger idea, but he can't quite get there.

I've got a special edition from Illumicrate coming, so I'll be rereading it when I have that.

The Guncle by Steven Rowley - 5/5 stars

I saw this in bookstores for years before I finally gave in and bought it. The blurb makes it sound insufferable and twee. Ignore the blurb. This was such a good book about grief and learning how to live again after terrible loss.

I Like Me Better by Robby Weber - 4/5 stars

At last I can stop getting the Lauv song stuck in my head whenever I set eyes on this book (it's stuck in my head as I type this). Pretty standard-issue YA, but it was cute and had a good message.

The Stagsblood King by Gideon E Wood - 4/5 stars

Another book about moving on from grief! This is the second book in a trilogy. When I was trying to determine if I wanted to read on beyond book 1, I scoured the internet for information about what happens in books 2 and 3. Eventually I decided, hell, I enjoyed book 1 well enough, even if what I want to happen in the rest of the trilogy doesn't happen, they're worth reading. SO, to that end, I will tell anyone looking for info that Tel gets romantically involved with a new man in this one, which, eh. I still want him to somehow end up with Vared. It was still quite good though.

In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune - DNF at pg 82

So funnily, we were at the bookstore the day I was about to start reading this, and my wife pointed out Ravensong (also by Klune) to me and said, "Do you have this one?" I made a face and said, "That's an older one of his books and I'm wary of his early work after that horrible Verania series. I don't think I've ever read an author as hit or miss as TJ Klune."

I wrote the above when I was 60 pages in and now I have officially DNFed this. Listen. You know how in Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi was clearly given free rein to do whatever he wanted, so all of his worst impulses made it to the final cut unchecked? Yeah. That's what this book is like.

Here's my Storygraph review: I see Klune is officially Too Big To Edit now. This book has exactly the same problem that his awful Verania series had—a joke that's funny at first but quickly grows tiresome when it's repeated five times per page. The emphasis on Victor's asexuality was also weird and read like Klune was just super proud of himself for writing an ace character.

Lion's Legacy by LC Rosen - 4.25/5 stars

Queer, YA Indiana Jones, but less #problematic. This book had some eerie similarities to my own archaeology adventure novel(s), which made me wonder half-seriously if I somehow know Lev Rosen? Anyway, I feared this would be very heavy-handed and not nuanced on archaeology's ethical dilemmas, since it's YA and also the current culture is to view said dilemmas as completely black and white with no nuance, but I was pleasantly surprised. It manages to examine that, queerness, and daddy issues, plus has time to be a genuinely fun and exciting adventure story. Highly recommend.

Too White to be Coloured, Too Coloured to be Black by Ismail Lagardien - 4/5 stars

I picked up this memoir in a bookstore at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg as research for Six Places to Fall in Love, since Percy is coloured. A pretty brutal read, but good, and definitely good research. The author was a photographer and journalist through the most violent years of apartheid.

The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson - 5/5 stars

Two nonfiction books in a row?? This is the second book by Erik Larson I've read, the first being the excellent The Devil in the White City. I'm not, in general, all that interested in WWII when it comes to military history, but this book is about the day to day lives of Churchill and the people surrounding him (with brief stops to visit FDR and high-ranking Nazis sprinkled throughout). This is a very, very good book, and I recommend reading it if only as a reminder of the resilience and bravery of ordinary people under terrifying circumstances.

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh - 5/5 stars

Holy shit. Holy shit is this book good. Imagine the love child of Lost, Person of Interest, and Battlestar Galactica, but queer and with multiverse shenanigans thrown in.

I need everyone to read this book. Now. Yesterday. Get to it.

Superhuman Reflexes: Wonder Woman's reflexes are far beyond the limitations of the finest human athletes. She has been able to react to a barrage of gunfire from multiple opponents at once unharmed. Batman noted that her reflexes are superior to that of Superman.[citation needed]

Warcraft 3: Reforged

Đúng như dự kiến từ trước đó, vào ngày 29/1/2020,Warcraft 3: Reforgedđã được phát hành trên toàn thị trường quốc tế. Được biết, đây là phiên bản làm lại trên nền tảng đồ họa 4K của trò chơi gốc phát hành năm 2003. Chính vì như thế, sự phát triển ra củaWarcraft 3: Reforgedđã khiến fan hâm mộ thế giới phải lo lắng không yên.

Tuy nhiên, thực tế lại không màu hồng như nhiều người vẫn tưởng. Hy vọng nhiều thì thất vọng nhiều. Khi sản phẩm này ra mắt, nhiều người dân đã phải hụt hẫng về sản phẩm của Blizzard. Không dùng lại phần đồ họa không đúng như mong đợi, Blizzard còn cắt bỏ nhiều khả năng hay ho của phiên bản cũ. Với giá thành đắt đỏ như 1 tựa game mới, những gì mà Blizzard mang lại trongWarcraft 3: Reforgedlà không thể hài lòng nhiều người.

Trên chuyên trang tổng hợp Metacritic, Warcraft 3: Reforged đang nhận điểm số thấp kỷ lục 1.0 (do người chơi đánh giá). Điều này có nghĩa rằng cứ 10 người chơi thì có tới 9 là chê bai tựa game này. Trong lịch sử Blizzard, chưa từng có sản phẩm này bị ghẻ lạnh và hắt hủi đến vậy.

So, I was rereading Queen of Shadows and found this bit in chapter 82 "His precious gift, his key, he had called her. A living gate, he promised. Soon, he had said he would add the other. And then find the third." "Kaltain Rompier unleashed her shadowfire upon them all ... The fire she had harbored since magic had returned—golden flame now turned to black." Could what happen to Kaltain happen to Aelin since Kaltain had fire magic? Would Aelin make herself the gate to banish Erawan?

So, here’s the problem, I haven’t read EoS in a while, and because I joined tumblr after everyone was done talking about it, I don’t know any of the theories/ meta on the whole key/lock/gate word-salad thing that happens in EoS. BUT, I’m glad you brought this up because maybe some people can provide some handy links to some great meta that I am certain has been made on this topic because I easily get lost on all this stuff and I want to get it straight in my head too!

1. I forgot about that line about the “living gate”. They talk about the wyrdgate but I can’t remember a whole lot about what that meant. Does that mean that when a person is in possession of all three keys that they become the gate? I was never super clear on that. (this is what happens when you only listen to the audiobook on a series that is this dense, y’all)

2. I remembered the bit about how Kaltain’s power used to be golden, isn’t that why she was chosen by Erawan? Because she also had Brannon’s gifts and he wanted to pervert the powers that are capable of defeating him and use them for his own use? But her powers turned into shadow-fire due to her possession by a Valg prince I thought. So I think Kaltain is meant to be like the other side of the coin, like what would happen to Aelin if things went horribly, terribly wrong.

3. It was my understanding that Aelin’s purpose isn’t to be the gate, but the lock. She talks about getting the three keys and putting them in the gate, but again is that a person or a thing? Either way, her power and life force is meant to go into forging/ reforging the lock to seal the gate. But also, I’ve always thought that it wasn’t going to be just her anyway. She’s obviously not going to die, and there’s too much weight put on that moment in QoS when her and Dorian use magic together. But I think a third will be thrown in somehow-Manon. I just don’t know how. The newest addition to the Mechforce a Commander may chose to use have been released. Weighing in at 110 tons the Surt should be a force multiplier strong enough to scare all but the hardiest souls, except... The color scheme makes it look more like some pink fluffy over grown toy. Not that having opponents underestimate you is a bad idea, but if potential employers do so as well it might cost you some contracts. Some Commanders have found some Surts out in the Galaxy, the rest of us will have to purchase them.

For an outlay of 26k Ferrite, 20k Bioptics and 490 Crystal this monster machine can be Yours, provided you have a licence of at least 166.

For this outlay you get a bare boned Mech with the following stats:

Speed: -27 Precision: 1 Dodge: 2 Shield: (20)

It also come equipped with:

2X Flagare 1X Phyrenado 2X Incinerator 2X Chimera 4X Square Flame 3X Scorcher and room for one additional weapon.

This should be enough to clear the Pirate Moon by itself, unless you have cleared it dozens of times beforehand.

To get it to its full potential however you need to upgrade it 316 times. At standard time and cost this will set you back 8532 Crystals, 351 076 Bioptics and 456 304 Ferrite.

When you have finished all the upgrading it will have these stats (without equipment.)

The cupboard is not empty when it comes to equipment, but there is not lot to choose from either. Bearing in mind that more equipment probably will be made available, we still try to put together a standard (Crystal) and an elite (Niode) Equipment package for the Surt.

Starting at the Engines, the top models are:

MK 300 (Speed +5, Auto-Repair +1 and 2% Fire vulnerability) Volcanic Core (Speed +10, Auto Repair +1, Fire Damage +6% and 3% Splash) We get eight of each

For Chasis the choice is a bit harder:

For the standard package the choice is between the Cooling Turbine (Dodge +6, 3x Damage +3% and 4% vulnerability to both Missiles and Fire) and the Actuator Decoupler (Dodge +4, speed +1 and 3% Ice Vulnerability) Either way, the Dodge will end up being subpar, so the question is speed or multiples. Here the additional weaknesses of the Cooling Turbine tips the choice toward the Actuator Decouplers and we order six of them.

For the elite package the two challengers are the Reforged Battleplate (Dodge +11, Shield (20) and 10% Prjectile Shield) and the Inertial Dampening (Dodge +10, Speed +2, 3x Damage +5%, Laser Damage +3% and 4% Proj. Vulnerable) As both can give us top (70) Dodge the question is offense or defense. We choose the Inertial Dampening and offense. Six ordered.

The Cockpits can make us or break us, we need to get as close to top Precision (96) as we can. The only standard Cockpit to give us Precision is the 8-Shifter (Precision +5, 2x Damage +3) We get seven of them The top elite Cockpit is the Nanobioptic Gloves (Precision +12, 2x Damage +6, Shield (2) and 2% laser Vulnerability) Seven ordered.

Shields are used to reduce incoming damage, and to patch holes the other equipment have made.

The standard package will include one of each of the Crystal 110 ton Shields (Celestial Mirror, Atomic De-Icer, Immolation Isolation, Enigma Syndicate and Heavy Buckler) The Elite package will use the 105-110 ton Single Shields, one of each (Titanium Shield, Fire Armor, Thermal Plating, Swarm Plating and Refraction Shield)

This gives us the following stats for the finished builds (C/N):

Average damage will be 204.7% of normal for the standard version and 352.8% for the elite version.

Cost of the packages: In addition to some comparably negligable amounts of Ferrite/Bioptics is either 1529 Niodes or 1854 Crystal.

While the Elite variant gives superior performance all over the board, the question is wether this is the best use of so many Niodes. The standard variant have poor Dodge, so-so Speed and crappy Precision.

On the other hand, as mentioned before, better equipment might well be coming.

Chapter 76 of Reforged is live. It's been a slow writing week but at least that chapter's ready to go.

We're actually, other than final typo checks, ready to go through at least chapter 82. I'm anticipating the current arc finishing up around... chapter 87 or so. I've got preliminary blocking set up at least until chapter 97 which is nearing the end of the whole thing.

I also removed the Torchbearer tag since, technically, that refers to a specific unit of them. I'd missed it in earlier tag cleanups.
