"Beatlemania offered escape from the mainstream, male-driven adult world through its own fashion, slang, social events, and music. Whether in Seattle or Stockholm, girls could cultivate a sense of shared identity and international community by subscribing to Beatles Monthly. Teen and music magazines also became invaluable texts, assisting fans in acquiring "Beatles knowledge" and connecting with fellow readers as pen pals. Female fans often wore Mod clothing, which they associated with the Beatles and their romantic partners-or they might sport a John Lennon cap or an "I love Ringo" button. American Beatlemaniacs often adopted the band's British slang ("fab," "gear," "grotty") to feel culturally closer to them. Some US fans formed the "Beatle Bobbies" ("Bobbies" as slang reference to British policemen), a group wanting to "protect the Beatles and control mass confusion" at their concerts. Others started fan clubs or hosted events at schools and local youth clubs. Akin to traditional subcultures, this community allowed girls to both "fit in" and "stick out" among peers. Through Beatlemania they could be daring together."
