Today as part of Union County's annual Four Centuries in a Weekend, we visited the @reevesreedarboretum in Summit, #NewJersey. This 13.5 acre site is home to the Wisner House and several outbuildings. There are also woodland trails, a glacial bowl, and historic #gardens. This Colonial Revival home was built in 1889 for John and Isabelle Wisner by New York architects Babb, Cook & Willard. They called the estate “The Clearing.” John Wisner was a textile importer in the China trade. The grounds were designed with assistance from noted landscape architect Calvert Vaux. In 1916, new owners, Richard and Susie Reeves, purchased the estate. The Charles L. Reed family became the last private owners in 1968. In 1974, the estate was preserved as a public arboretum by @cityofsummit.nj.
