Oooh I love matchups!!

My name is Beck and I’m a straight female. My love language is definitely quality time. Not a fan of physical touch at all so I like to show my appreciation that way instead. I’m an ESTP personality type but it takes a while before I’m fully comfortable with someone enough to be genuine. Sarcastic as all hell and low key meaner than I intended sometimes. Regardless of being an extrovert, I feel more like I’m in the middle between that and introvert and I o Lu really speak when I’m a) comfortable or b) I have something important to say. I have a wicked RBF (apparently the only emotion I express is murderous) and I love popping up randomly and scaring people. I like drawing (portraits specifically), true crime, reading (love me some dark stories), and literally any weapon ever they’re just so cool- i love heights and I’m not particularly scared of anything. Night owl for sure, morning suck.

Uhh as stated, don’t like physical touch and there isn’t much exception to that? Maybe if I really cared for the person but otherwise not really. I hate pink and purple and prefer darker cool colors. I don’t like peppers and I’d cook only if I was literally forced to.

So, I like wearing black, splashes of red or another color occasionally, and I’m dressed down a lot but I love dressing up when the opportunity calls for it. Would definitely love to dress up in very elegant, intimidating clothing to make up for my 5 foot height lol (although I am very good at hide and seek)

Alastor also isn’t too into PDA or physical affection in general, but he genuinely does like to court you, so simple things like having you on his arm or hand kisses are fairly regular as long as you’re okay with it

Wild Thoughts

You’re sitting courtside at the Indiana Fever game, there to support Angel as she plays in yet another intense matchup. It’s been a close game, and tensions are high as the Fever fans grow more vocal and aggressive with their jeers, especially since Angel’s team is pulling ahead.

You’re used to the atmosphere—heck, being with Angel Reese, you’ve seen your fair share of fierce rivalries—but tonight, something feels different. The fans around you start getting particularly rowdy, and before you know it, one of them makes a rude comment about Angel. You try to brush it off, but then someone steps forward and starts shouting directly at you.

“Reese isn’t all that! Why are you even here supporting her? She’s not gonna win tonight!” one of them sneers. Another grabs a drink, looking like they’re about to throw it your way.

Before you can react, the drink splashes down, narrowly missing you, and things escalate. Fever fans close in, hurling insults, and you start feeling cornered.

But just when things are about to get worse, you hear a familiar voice cut through the chaos. “Yo, back off!”

It’s Angel. She’s stormed over from the court, fury flashing in her eyes. She pushes through the crowd of fans, standing in front of you protectively, her presence commanding enough to make most of them step back.

“I don’t care what team you support,” Angel growls, her gaze locked on the people who had been harassing you. “You mess with her, you mess with me. Y’all wanna disrespect my girl? That’s not happening.”

The Fever fans quiet down, but Angel isn’t done. She turns to a security guard nearby, her voice firm. “Get these people out of here.”

Security quickly steps in, dispersing the crowd, and you feel a wave of relief wash over you. Angel turns to you, her expression softening as she cups your face gently. “You okay? I’m so sorry you had to deal with that.”

You nod, shaken but grateful. “I didn’t want to cause a scene.”

Angel smirks, brushing a thumb across your cheek. “Hey, they were the ones who caused it. I’m just making sure they know not to mess with my girl.”

She pulls you into a hug, and you feel safe in her arms, knowing she’s always got your back—on and off the court.

Chapter 13: The Calm Before The Storm

A month or so had passed, honestly Jaune had lost track of time waiting for something called the Vytal Tournament. Team RBYN and JNWL had been walking around enjoying the festivities that came with the Vytal Tournament.

Jaune: So… run that by me again.

Blake, sighing: Jaune, for the last time, the Vytal Tournament is held every few in a different kingdom. It's where multiple schools can participate and show off their best students.

Jaune: Right I knew that part... but how exactly are rounds... organized?

Weiss: Rounds start off as 4 vs 4. One team against another. Next are the two vs two where the winners of the last round choose two of their teammates to fight. Next are the one on one fights. Each round lasts until one side is either knocked out of the arena or their aura is brought to 15 percent.

Jaune nodded along with his partner's info dump.

Jaune: I see... well then I wish everyone the best of luck, but team JNWL will be winning this tournament.

Yang: Haha, that's the spirit!

Jaune soon remembered what Cinder had told him.

Jaune: Well, we won't hold back. Even against our friends.

Ruby: Oh, that's right. Are your friends gonna participate too, Jaune?

Jaune, nodding: That's right they will. I'll have the upper hand since I know three of them so well. Their fourth though... that may give me some trouble. Don't think I'll give you some advice if you go up against them though.

Pyrrha, sighing: Well, I suppose that's to be expected. Hehe, although if we face off against each other in the finally don't expect me to go easy on you.

Nora, bouncing in her seat out of excitement: You know, leader, I'm surprised you never even heard of the Vytal Tournament in the first place.

Jaune rubbed the back of his neck.

Jaune: I-It's not my fault. I grew up on the outskirts.

They all shared some laughs and got some food before team RBYN had to leave for the first round of the tournament.

Jaune examined the matchup on his scroll as his team rode the bullhead to the arena.

Jaune: So they'll be going up against team ABRN.

Ren: ABRN? So they're going up against Mistral?

Weiss: Mistral is a bunch of lowlives. RBYN is gonna win this fight, I have no doubt.

Nora bounced in excitement as they arrived at the arena and found a place to sit.

The announcers were none other than professor Oobleck and Port.

Oobleck: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first fight of the 40th Vytal Tournament.

Port: That's right! Our first contestants are team RBYN of Beacon going up against team ABRN of Mistral. This will certainly be the fight of a century.

The arena erupted in cheers as the environment was selected. Jaune watched in anticipation as both teams stared off before the countdown ended and a beautiful flurry of fighting ensued. Crowds cheered for the teams pushing them to go beyond their limits.

Reese was circling the arena, while the other members of team ABRN picked their fights with the members of team RBYN.

Yang and Arslan fought hand to hand neither seeming to be stronger than the other, an even fight. Pyrrha and Blake attempted to pick off the other two members as Ruby attempted to take down Reese. Speed vs speed, strength vs strength, and two vs two. The fight seemed like their would be no end until Reese was knocked off her hoverboard by a stray attack from Blake allowing Ruby to let out a fury of strike knocking Reese's aura to the red.

Port: Reese Chloris has been eliminated!

Oobleck: Incredible! Despite seeming evenly matched in speed Ruby has managed to get the upper hand.

The crowds got louder with cheer and disdain. Blake and Pyrrha were able to take down their opponents and despite it being a close match Yang was just barely able to defeat Arslan.

As team RBYN left the arena team JNWL caught up with them.

Weiss: So, you four gonna go recharge at the fairgrounds?

Winded, Ruby was barely able to respond.

Ruby: Yeah... that fight took a lot more out of us than we expected.

Weiss flashed her credit card.

Weiss: Then allow me to treat you four to some food.

Cut to a noodle stall where Weiss' card was declined.

Weiss: What? But I was barely into my monthly allowance.

Blake tried to sneakily take her noodles with fish before the shopkeep took it away much to the cat girl's dismay.

Blake: No…

Pyrrha sighed as she took out her card.

Pyrrha: It's fine I can just pay for us.

Weiss apologized as they all got their food. Jaune looked to a nearby screen where the fight of Cinder's team was being streamed.

Jaune: As expected, a total sweep. No one can hold a candle to Cindy.

Weiss looked away as her leader praised a completely different girl, jealousy rising in her.

Jaune: Mercury and Emerald seem to be holding up well too. You go girls!

With every praise to the girls Weiss' jealousy only grew.

Jaune: Mint is doing surprisingly well too. You go swe- you go girl!

Although he corrected himself Weiss knew something was up. She swore she almost heard Jaune call this "MInt" girl "sweetie" this complete stranger is... stealing her man.

The eight of them finished their food, Jaune may have bitten off more than he could hold though.

Jaune: Ugh... too many noodles... too many carbs.

Ren patted Jaune's back.

Ren: You'll be fine.

Nora got up from her seat.

Nora: Welp, we best get ready. We'll be fighting in the next round.

Ruby smiled as the four walked away.

Ruby: Good luck, we'll be cheering for you!

Oobleck: Welcome back! This round we'll have Beacon's team JNWL face off against team BRNZ of Shade!

Port: This is certainly going to be a quick fight. After all team JNWL is full of power houses. The swift Ren, the powerful Nora, the elegant Weiss, and the destructive Jaune! We do wish team BRNZ good luck.

As the countdown ended May immediately headed for the trees to get a vantage point and hopefully pick off her opponents.

Jaune: Alright, Ren Nore quickly. Flower Power!

There was an awkward silence before Ren tilted his head.

Ren: Um… what?

Jaune: Guys, we discussed this. Our team combos.

As the discussion between team JNWL continued everyone looked around in confusion. Jaune rubbed his temples and sighed.

Jaune: You know what? Nora… just hit them with the hammer.

Nora grinned as she clenched the handle of her hammer.

Nora: Got it~

There was a loud buzz as the members of team BRNZ were quickly knocked out of the arena.

Port: Team JNWL wins!

Jaune groaned, a hint of disappointment in his voice.

Jaune: Man… I didn’t even get to do anything.

Ruby, wincing at his words: Jeez… I saw the battle… if you can even call it that. Hey, at least your team is moving on to the duo rounds.

Jaune: Yeah... we're sending Nora and Weiss, how about you?

Ruby: Yang and Pyrrha.

As the two walked around the fairgrounds they bumped into Emerald.

Emerald: Oh, Jaune... why aren't you with your team?

Jaune: Em, what's up? Uh... I'm just unwinding a bit. Besides I won't be participating in the duo round.

Ruby: Emerald, right? So... how long have you known Jaune?

Ruby held her hand out to which Emerald smiled at her. However, there was a hint of disdain in her actions.

Emerald: We've known each other longer than you have, that's all you need to know.

Ruby retracted her hand, sensing the hostility in Emerald.

Ruby: Right... right. I'll uh... see you later then.

As Ruby walked away Jaune couldn't help but feel conflicted and confused.

Jaune: So... did Cinder need something?

Emerald: Oh, n-no... I just... wanted to see you before my fight.

Jaune: Speaking of which I saw your fight. You've come a long way, Em.

Jaune patted Emerald's head as he praised her.

Emerald blushed as she felt his touch, warm and soothing.

Emerald: Th-Thanks... you're gonna be there and watch me fight, right?

Jaune flashed a bright smile as he took his hand off of Emerald.

Jaune: Of course I will. I'll be cheering you and...

Emerald: Mercury... it's gonna be Mercury and I for the duo round.

Jaune: Right, I'll be cheering you and Mercury on.

Jaune walked away, leaving Emerald blushing and content with the interaction.

Emerald: … I'm sorry for what's gonna happen.

Oobleck: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back. The first duo round shall now commence between Mercury Black and Emerald Sustrai from Shade against Beacon's own Coco Adel and Yatsuhashi!

Coco pulled down her shades as she examined her opponents.

Coco: I love your outfits, though you could still use some work on your fashion tastes.

Mercury and Emerald remained silent and as the countdown ended they walked backwards into the field. Meanwhile in the crowd team JNWL and RBYN were seated next to each other.

Ruby: Hey uh... do they have a plan?

Jaune: Oh, they do. Emerald's semblance allows others to perceive what she wants. It may seem like they're just hiding in the field…

Coco unfolded her weapon revealing her machine and began to mow down the field, getting rid of every blade of grass only to reveal that Emeral and Mercury are nowhere to be seen.

Jaune: They may just be right behind them.

As soon as Jaune spoke a chain wrapped around Coco and pulled her into the forest while Mercury launched herself towards Yatsuhashi and kicked him into the forest.

In the forest Yatsuhashi attempted to block Mercury's strikes with his sword.

Yatsu: I must admit... you are strong given your size.

Coco meanwhile was thrown into a tree, breaking her shades.

Coco: You'll pay for that... these were expensive.

As their fight continued the crowd murmured as they couldn't see beyond the dense forest. However, they fight was not long with Mercury and Emerald coming out on top.

Port: In a landslide victory, Emerald and Mercury have come out on top!

After the round team JNWL along with Ruby and Blake met up with Emerald and Mercury.

Weiss, reluctantly: I can see why Jaune praises you two so much.

Mercury: Thank you, any friend of Jaune is a friend of ours.

Mercury flashed a smile as she held out her hand.

Weiss: Actually, I'm his-

Before Weiss could finished Jaune hugged Mercury and Emerald.

Jaune: You two were amazing out there! Gods I wish I had a semblance like yours, Em.

Emerald: Th-Thanks Jaune... but I can't... breathe.

Emerald tapped Jaune's back before he let go.

Jaune: Ah, sorry about that haha. Mercury, you too, your hand to hand combat has improved greatly.

Mercury: O-Of course it has. I've been getting some more training in since you left.

Weiss couldn't help but feel left out as she was exposed to the years of chemistry between the three. How could she ever compete?

Ruby: So, which one you is going to the singles round?

Mercury: Me obviously.

Mercury flashed a cheeky smile as she pointed to herself.

Ruby: Well, Blake and I are gonna go watch the next few matches now.

Ruby began to drag Blake back into the crowd.

Jaune: We still have time to hang around. Weiss and Nora are gonna be duo round after Yang and Pyrrha.

Jaune walked away with the rest of his team following suit as he waved Emerald and Mercury goodbye. 

Mercury: ... Is it really alright to leave him in the dark about all this?

There was a long silence before Emerald looked down at the ground.

Emerald: Salem has ordered all of us to not involve Jaune in all of this.

Mercury: But why? He should know, what if he-

Emerald: Enough! Salem wants Jaune to assume that this is all a freak accident. Have him lose trust in Ozpin... it's all to make him loyal.

A pregnant pause followed before Emerald spoke again.

Emerald: We can't tell him anything unless you wanna go against Salem's direct orders.

Mercury: Right... we can't tell him anything, got it.

Character niches in Berwick Saga: Axel has no movement penalties for water and can search marked spots Kramer doesn't lose avoid for scaling cliffs (and can bait enemy archers into awkward positions thanks to this and bowbane) and can knock away enemy shields Esteban can ignore enemy terrain bonuses and has extra Fog of War vision Sylvis can interrupt an enemy action if they come in her range with the overwatch skill Larentia is the only flying ally unit in the game Ruby has axebane, as well as access to both swords and lances Percival is a mage who comes with Dire Thunder (and the only mage with bowbane, making him a different kind of strong archer counter) Dean is an axe user with desperation (a +30 accuracy attack which lets the opponent counter with 100 accuracy, but will also let you double if you have the speed), which pairs with adept and vengeful, making him suited for the front lines, whilst Daoud has access to Battle Cry (a stackable attack+hit buff that works for one battle) and Axe Guard (use an axe as a shield on enemy turn) allowing him to play more defensively or act as a boss killer. The act of giving all of your characters specific niches makes the cast so much more interesting to use, especially given that if the character isn't part of the Sinon Knights you need to hire them With Gold to be able to use them. You spend so much thought on who will join for what map based on the environment, matchups, who you want to level, who you want to permanently recruit etc etc.
