February 19th, 1998
Our recent fray with Sarah Ellis has left my arsenal and our supplies relatively low: I've been working to replenish our stores with sunlight grenades and healing boosters, not to mention giving Louis some ballistic weave: he took some heavy blows during our fight with the Gentlemen, I figure he should be well-protected.
Margin notes: Maybe make one for Quentin too? Holy water armor useful, but only against vampires: keep in mind.
As for my current weapon loadout, I've come to a realization: my cesium launcher, useful though it is, has drawbacks. It can cause collateral damage, it's attention-grabbing, and it's extremely imprecise: I need something else for fighting vampires.
Thankfully, I have an idea: I heard the story about Miss Ruby from my friends, about how she killed a vampire in her club by giving him holy water disguised as a drink. That's a relatively small amount of holy water, but it still burned and vaporized him on the spot: just like with normal humans, it seems internal damage is much more effective with vampires than external. While I can't convince a vampire to drink holy water in the middle of a fight, I CAN deliver it into their body with a hypodermic, given that their skin is as easily penetrable as human skin. I've developed an attachment for my launcher that uses darts instead of pellets, and I've filled those darts with holy water. If my calculations are correct (and I believe they are), it'll actually be a more effective damager than the cesium.
Of course, this has pros and cons: it'll only be effective against something that is affected by holy water, a weakness that isn't as common as it should be. That being said, as long as the darts can be filled with liquid, they can be useful for delivering a payload of my enemy's weaknesses: it's a versatile weapon. That'll be my new main ranged weapon: I'll save the cesium launcher for emergencies and big-gun situations.
(Margin notes: definition of "big-gun situation" needs clarification. Will develop threat ranking system after careful research, deliberation, and classification: remember to ask Quentin and Miss Rosemont for assistance. Possibly Miss Cavendish too, once she's out of hospital.)
I've also begun studies on the spatial anomaly I've discovered in my room: it seems to defy most classifications as we know them. There have been theories about things like this: a space-time anomaly that utilizes warp field physics and null-temporal mechanics. They've been theorized to hell and back, but this is the first proof I've ever seen that they really exist. Obviously, I need to do as much research as possible, but even my initial research has given me intriguing insights: simply put, the anomaly exists in a state of flux unlike the space-time around it, allowing it to be freely changed when exposed to low-level particle manipulation. What's more, when I analyzed its properties and applied Zedillo's Equation, it became clear that it's possible to replicate these properties, thus allowing for the potential to freely "strengthen" or "weaken" space-time itself!
This opens up so many new avenues of invention: artificial gravity or anti-gravity, teleportation, force fields (that one in particular seems like a good place to start), and that's only the beginning! If my theories are sound, it's entirely possible I could go so far as DIMENSIONAL TRAVEL, making it theoretically possible to confirm MULTIVERSE THEORY: this could be one of the biggest technological and scientific leaps forward in human history, and it's IN. MY. ROOM.
(Margin notes: drink water and take deep breaths. Maybe some Ativan too, while I'm at it.)
But even outside of all of that, this anomaly and the possibilities it provides have given me a thought: we've fought some nasty things in our time here at Mossvale, but there's one thing we've never overcome, something we're trying to avoid. HIM. Whatever he was, he was powerful, more than anything else we've seen, anything we've read about.
What if he comes back for us?
So, I've begun work on a project: I want it to be as top-secret as possible, so I'm not putting solid information on it even here. I'm going to keep a secondary journal and hide it with the relevant information inside to keep track. I haven't even begun building yet, but I need to formulate as many ideas as possible. This will be easily my biggest and most dangerous project yet: I need to exercise extreme caution when beginning construction.
(Margin notes: Because it's going to kick SO MUCH ASS.)
Having finished my work for the day, I'm heading back to my room: need to reorganize my weapons when I get back. Can't let anything distract me.
Nothing is more important than this, now.
End log.

Oh my God, it's over.
It's really over.
...I don't know where to start. And I've already had a week to think about it!
We managed to take down Sarah Ellis, but not the way I was expecting: Quentin, miracle worker that he is, found a way to give her back her soul. Rather than kill her, we managed to bring her back to normal...or at least, as normal as a vampire can be.
It took one heck of a fight to get there, though: we had a huge battle in the library. Ruaraidh got pretty messed-up by Sarah, and Ms. Cavendish......
Well, she's okay now. Might have some residual stiffness in her neck, but my healing booster is very effective. Thank God for Louis and his quick thinking.
Ruaraidh's still healing up in the hospital: Sarah got him good in that fight. Seeing him like that was rough, but they're taking good care of him. Still, I can't help but worry, so I've been in to see him a few times in the last week. I really miss seeing him around the dorms, but he'll be back soon, so that's what I'm looking forward to.
...I should give him a welcome-back gift. Maybe a teddy bear from the hospital gift shop? I could make some accessories for it to give it a leather jacket and axe, that'd be cute.
Quentin's aunt helped us out with the fight: she's just as powerful as he is in the magic department, it turns out. I should have seen it coming: she knew so much about the restricted section, of course she'd know about magic. I'm glad Quentin has someone to talk to about magic that's not Imogene: not that I have anything against her (I'm really happy she has Sarah back), but she has historically had...problems dealing with magic. Better that he has another source of support.
I'm trying to savor our victory (seriously, we all made it out in one piece! ...Mostly.), but there's still work to be done. The hellmouth is still under us, and it's gonna keep spitting out things that need dealing with. I've had some innovative ideas involving holy water delivery, and beyond that, there's still that...anomaly in my room that needs observing.
A supernatural hunter's work is never done. Thankfully, I love work, so it all works out!
End log.

If my handwriting seems a little shaky, it's only because I'm shaken, and badly. I can't do science right now, I can only try to make sense of everything. And for once, it has nothing to do with the (admittedly terrifying) creatures we faced today.
Everyone knows. About Victor. And everything is different now.
Ruaraidh took it much better than I thought he would: when he came in with his axe, I was scared he was gonna try to hurt Victor. But whatever he learned from Miss Ruby, it must've been effective: he decided to trust Victor. Louis was a little shaky, but he seems to be on board.
Quentin...
I've never seen him like that. Ever. He was furious: it was honestly scary. When he yelled my name...I know, I know he would never hurt me, would never even dream of it, but for just one second...
But no matter how upset I was, I know it's nothing compared to how he was feeling.
I feel like an idiot: this whole time, I told myself that it didn't matter that Victor was a demon because, no matter what he is, he's still my friend. He protected me and Imogene against Sarah Ellis, he came into my head with everyone else to save me, he's fought alongside all of us so much...I thought what he was doesn't matter, only who. And Victor, for all his reckless, stupid, chaotic, ridiculous choices, IS a good person. He wants to help us and protect us, he cares about us, and that's all that should matter, right?
Whoops.
Turns out not everyone thinks that it's that simple. Turns out, it can be a betrayal to keep something like that from someone. Turns out, people can feel hurt and upset that things were kept from them, no matter how well-intentioned it was.
And now, everything's a mess. Just in time for us to take on Sarah Ellis.
I've told the others where she and her cronies are hiding: we're riding out to battle as soon as we're recovered and geared up. We're going to face up against the enemy that we've been facing in one way or another for months...and we're fractured, and divided, and fighting.
And I don't know what to do.
In the absence of knowing what to do, I'll default to what I do best: making some tech and using it to fight tooth and nail to protect the people I love. I'll let those actions speak for my intentions, and hope that that's enough.
I have work to do.

Okay, after a day to process my feelings, I feel like I can go back to objective scientific notes. And now that I'm no longer in a towering state of trauma-induced agitation, I can take note of something.
I did it. I finished the ballistic weave.
The kinetic sensors integrated into the suit did the trick: when they sense attacks coming, the nylon/spandex mix immediately hardens the area that will be hit and reinforces it with a kinetics-negating burst of energy. It still doesn't stop all damage, but that's largely because I'm facing things like vampires that have inhuman strength: against ordinary people with ordinary weapons, it should be borderline invulnerable.
I can't believe I did this. It's blowing my mind. This is the freaking HOLY GRAIL of modern body armor, and I made it! People like my father have thrown millions of dollars and employed teams of hundreds of workers into researching this stuff and trying to figure out how to make it, and I did it in my dorm room with a toolbox and minimal resources!
(Margin notes: resist the urge to get his approval by telling him about it. Also, resist the urge to be petty and spiteful and rub it in his face.)
Though, now that I've made that and my drone, I need to figure out what else to make. I still want to shelve the laser attachment, but I do have an idea for something with less potential collateral damage. Working on the holy water armor gave me the idea of using it as a weapon: not as a grenade (too much potential of shrapnel), but a water cannon of some kind that can hit from a distance and do some preemptive damage. And I still need to make more sunlight grenades for the rest of the guys, just in case. But if I want to keep this utility streak going, I need to figure out what else might help the group in a non-aggressive way.
I'm not sure what to go with, though. I've got the most normal weaknesses of vampires (sunlight, holy water, fire) covered, and outside of eating so much garlic that my blood tastes of it and repels vampires, I'm not sure what else I can exploit. What if I negated one of their strengths? They don't have the abilities they do in most fiction (shapeshifting, hypnosis, etc.), so I can't take those away. They're strong and fast, but it's not like I can-
(Margin notes: ...Wait. Wait a minute.)
Maybe I can!
During the fight against Sarah Ellis, Imogene used magic to slow her down: given her Slayer and vampire abilities intermingling, she's incredibly fast and strong, but in that moment, she was much less of a threat: Imogene and Victor were able to push her back!
I have all these kinetic sensors and dampeners: what if I was able to boost and reverse their function? What if I was able to create personalized artificial gravity amplifiers? What if I was able to slow her down, or even trap her in place while the others staked her?!
(Margin notes: YES. YES! YESSSSSSS!!!!!)
I know what my next big project is going to be: artificial gravity! I shouldn't use it to shoot at her, she can dodge it, but if I laid a trap for her to get stuck in...!
Oh, she is going DOWN.

I feel SO much better now! (Both that I killed a metric ton of demons, and that I got a shower afterwards.)
(Mental note: ask Ruaraidh if we can make that a weekly stress reliever.)
...It's true. I'm not helpless. I'm strong enough to take on a horde of demons (with Ruaraidh's help) and WIN.
Now I'm going to go watch Star Trek: The Next Generation on my new TV: good way to end the evening, I think.
(Mental note: ask Victor if he wants to start marathoning it, starting with the Original Series.)

I am not helpless.
I AM NOT HELPLESS.
I am a brilliant inventor. The things I make are powerful and deadly. I have faced down vampires and WON. I am strong. I am capable. I am NOT a helpless child anymore. I am not weak. I am not a coward.
Whatever...whatever that was today, it is something I could face. I could. I could.
...Right?
It doesn't matter if I can face that thing. I have an enemy right in front of me. I am going to kill every vampire and demon and monster that comes within a mile of our campus. I am going to annihilate them. I am going to burn Sarah Ellis to ashes and record her screams so I can fall asleep to them every night.
And if any of them come anywhere near my friends, they are going to pay.
...I should find a way to let this stress and anger out healthily. Maybe weekly kickboxing or something.

I have begun mentally planning my next weapon design: a laser cutter attachment for my glasses. While I've had no time to draw up blueprints (or really, come up with anything more concrete than the concept), I have high hopes for the damage I could inflict by boring straight through a vampire, especially since the wound would immediately cauterize and thus might inhibit healing: more research and testing necessary.
(Margin notes: invest in eye protection. Laser + no eye protection = eye goo, and not on the enemy side.)
Work on the ballistic weave continues to styme me: attached kinetic sensors didn't have the reaction time necessary to harden the weave upon impact, even when optimized to the point of borderline overclocking. My next theory is that if I could somehow fuse the sensors and the weave, it might increase efficency to a necessary point, but doing so would require building a new kind of kinetic sensor from scratch, one that could be integrated with the weave itself: not a small task by any means. Building, assembling, calibrating, and then the more fine-tuned work, and that's assuming I can create a working concept to begin with. Still, the others will need it when we take on the horde: if it'll keep them safe, I'll raid the Guard Armory if need be.
(Margin Notes: Pros of raiding the Guard Armory: more high-quality tech to work with, disenfranchising an organization I mistrust, it's not fair that they get enriched uranium and I don't. Cons: Too many to count. Do not attempt.)
Still, working on the weave has left me with more questions than just build-related ones: maybe I should shelve the laser idea? Between the caesium launcher, my taser glove, and the Sunlight Grenades, maybe I have enough weapons to tide me over (provided they're loaded, charged, and armed, of course). There's a part of me that insists you can never have too many weapons with what we're up against: it's the same part that wants to just drop a low-yield SNW on the cemetery to wipe the vamps out and be done with it. Which would be wrong.
Working on this armor for my friends makes me think: I want to make things so I can protect them: I can't bear the thought of any of them getting hurt. But Quentin can crater things with his mind, Victor has the power of a dem his own personal magic on his side, Imogene's stronger than either of them when she puts her mind to it, Ruaraidh is a tank of a man who can hack a vamp apart in six seconds flat: even Louis is learning to stake and shoot with the best of them. Surely I have enough weapons to protect people as strong as them, right?
Then...why do I need more? Why does it still feel like it's not enough?
Who am I really making these weapons for?
(Margin notes: ........)
I'm shelving the laser idea: it needs more refinement anyway. My work would be more helpful if I focused on the utility side of things right now. I'll focus everything I have on the kinetic weave, but I need to remember: the horde is out there. They know where we are, and we can't say the same: if we could find them, we could plan an ambush and assault on their presumed compound, especially if I can mass-produce more Sunlight Grenades.
New concept: scouting drone.
(Margin notes: acquire large TV and satellite uplink from local electronics store, or order from overseas. Also, research birds endemic to the area. There's work to be done.)

After careful consideration, I've made the decision to make addendums to my scientific log, specifically detailing my feelings on various subjects. In other words, this is no longer just a scientific notebook, but a diary as well.
I decided to do this after re-reading my old notes at the end of the year: on a more emotional level, I've had a lot of things to think about and get off my chest for a long time, and now that I have a clear view of things for the first time in...God, years, it felt like a good opportunity to do so.
(And on a more pragmatic note, my feelings and experiences kept leaking into my notes anyway: maybe this way I can keep the science and venting somewhat separate.)
I was re-reading my old notes in the first place because I wanted to get a sense of where I am in my research compared to where I was last year, but...as I read, it stopped being about the science and more about who I was then, and what my life was like.
One year ago, I was at Notre Dame International High School in Paris: I was sitting in my dorm room staring out the window, not unlike how I am now. But back then, I was still rooted firmly in denial, sticking to my guns with my inventions, and nobody ever knocked on my door. All the other boys went about their day, walking down the halls, avoiding me like the plague.
(Then again, there WAS that period where I became interested in cultivating viruses, so maybe it wasn't all undeserved.)
There's this idea that you can't understand your own misery until you have some distance from it, when you are no longer feeling it. Only then can you look back and understand exactly how you felt at the time. And I think there's truth to that, because I had no idea how to parse the fact that I WAS utterly miserable. I had nothing else to compare it to: I only had one other feeling to compare it to, and I was trying so hard not to think about it that I ignored it.
But now...
As I'm writing this, I can hear Quentin and Victor through the wall: Victor's blathering about his horse Neighthan again (honestly, I love the name, but I don't think I can ever tell Quentin that), and Quentin is humoring him: he's been reading a lot about magic lately, so I imagine he's sat at his desk doing it. He seems so serious lately: I should do something to cheer him up. (Maybe a late Christmas gift?)
(Victor is my friend. No matter what else he might be, he's my friend. I remind myself that, when I wake up dreaming about fire, brick-red skin, and a lashing tail.)
Ruaraidh was in my room earlier, while I was putting the finishing touches on the Sunlight Grenade and confirming it for active use: he didn't say a word, just came in and started playing his guitar. I needed a little contextual explanation, but he didn't want to talk: he just wanted to be with me. I took a break and got my violin, and we played a little together: no structured songs, just some light jamming. Just enjoying each other's company.
I saw Louis in the halls yesterday: our conversation was brief, but we discussed what we'd been doing since the dorm attack. I discovered he'd been learning how to shoot a crossbow: when I offered to add a firebomb attachment to some of his bolts, he politely declined, but I saw a look in his eyes like excitement: maybe I'll offer again once I get some free time.
(On further reflection: it might have been fear. Totally possible. Maybe I'll rethink my offer.)
I also had my conversation with Imogene a week ago: I should've thought through my approach a little better, I think. She's right: with Sarah still an enemy needing to be taken down, she can't afford to remember her as a friend, that makes sense. Still, I think she did appreciate me coming to her: I hope I can keep her safe, she's been through way too much. (Still mildly embarrassed that she thought I was confessing to her: not that she's not pretty, but that's completely impossible. Glad we were able to establish friendship, though!)
One year ago, I was sitting in my dorm room in France, surrounded by nothing but cold metal and plaster walls. I was safe, but I was alone.
Today, I'm sitting in my dorm room in England, surrounded by woods that might be full to bursting with vampires...and rooms full of friends. MY friends.
And I might never be safe again, what with the vampires and werewolves and lizards (oh my!), but...I'm also not alone. People want to be with me, seek out my company, appreciate what I do and how I do it, and...I never could have imagined it, but it's wonderful.
I have friends now, real friends, who are depending on me. And I will kill every vamp in this country if I have to, to keep them safe.
Bring it on, Sarah Ellis, you goddamn leech. I'd say I'll burn you alive, but you're not alive anymore. Burn you undead, then.
End log.

Work on the Sunlight Grenade is progressing well: it should be noted that the chemical mixture is more "lively" than previously considered.
(Margin note: buy more aloe vera. LOTS more. Ouch.)
Nonetheless, I think I may have found a mixing ratio that not only accomplishes the goal, but can also be replicated: though it requires further testing to be sure, I hope to be on the verge of making more: each of my friends should have one, just in case of emergency.
That said, this device was made under an assumption granted by Ms. Cavendish: that, Slayer abilities aside, Sarah Ellis is a normal vampire that retains the weaknesses of the aforementioned demon. Given Miss Ellis' knowledge of the supernatural, she may find ways to guard herself against her own weaknesses: I may need to seek out more conventional (yet effective) means of warfare, to cover all contingencies.
(Margin note: do research into laser beams! Also, eye protection. VERY STRONG eye protection.)
I'm also proud to note my redemption: I've been able to recreate the taser glove, exactly as I intended it the first time! Heavily insulated (to prevent getting shocked from a power backlash), with a battery pack at the base and metal spikes on the fingertips to conduct the electricity! That should be easy to test without a vampire around, and once it's been fully combat-tested, I'll make sure to bring it into battle (though one would hope that won't be for a while)!
(Margin notes: RIP, my knife: you were a very helpful tool while you lasted. May you find a loving home with whoever has the strength to pull you from the stone.)
On the less enthusing side, I need to refine work on the body armor: my attempts at creating ballistic weave have hit a stumbling block. I have found a chemical spray for treating fabric that can serve a similar purpose in a pinch (inspired by stomach lining!), but it pales in comparison to what I need it to be. I'll continue research into it: if I could find some way to place a kinetic sensor on to the clothes, as well as a stronger fortification, I might be on the right track.
(Margin note: ask Ruaraidh to assist with testing. Most in need of armor, given front-line fighting style.)
Of course, it would have been easier if I hadn't been interrupted: conversations are difficult for me at the best of times, and my concentration was completely thrown off. If not for the fact that not being able to reach me would be displeasing for them, I wouldn't even have a phone in my room: the ringing jangles my nerves when I hear it.
(Margin note: replace ringer with recording of soothing music? Will investigate further.)
Then again, conversation might be the wrong terminology: it was the most perfunctory, disinterested, clipped small talk they could muster. They might as well have said "you continue to exist, Merry Christmas" and hung up, and it'd have had the same effect. At least I know better than to talk about my work with them: He just tunes out, and She has too many wheels turning to pay attention.
...I didn't tell them I remembered Bertie. It wouldn't have made a difference anyway, it would've just hurt us both. Besides, what would we have even talked about? Better to keep that to myself.
(Margin notes: It should have been you. The words have been scratched out angrily.)
