Sound Remembrance: Dickey Betts: An Allman by Another Name
When the Allman Brothers Band released the Dreams boxset and headed back out on the forever road in 1989, two things happened.
First, their music was suddenly everywhere, sounding fresh and new even though it’d still be awhile before ABB released actual new music.
The second - more-important - thing was that young-at-the-time, nascent blogs like Sound Bites finally got to experience the glory of the Allman Brothers Band on stage.
That mostly meant Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts, who along with Butch Trucks were the only members of the band to appear in every iteration of the ABB up to that point. And Betts, with a new foil in some dude called Warren Haynes, tore that shit up, playin’ his parts, occasionally playin’ Duane Allman’s parts and reactin’ like a guy made hungry again by the still-hungry Haynes.
ABB were playing theaters at this point and seeing the group in these intimate settings was even more of a treat than we realized at the time. As the years went by, the venues got bigger and soon the group’s annual Beacon run was the only opportunity to see the Allmans in such a cozy state. Of the many shows S.B. saw during this period, the most outrageous must’ve been a double bill with the Craig Fuller-fronted edition of Little Feat in Ohio; as soon as this concert let out, he was was on the road to see a couple of Jerry Garcia Band shows in Illinois and Wisconsin in what turned out to be an incredible week of live music.
Ah, to be young.
And alive.
With Betts’ April 18 death at age 80, only Jaimoe survives from the original Allman Brothers Band. But the music - and Betts’ outsized role in it - survives.
Obituaries unfailingly eulogized Betts as a foundational figure in Southern rock. And while he was that, Betts was also a sanctified country singer (“Ramblin’ Man”), a jazz composer extraordinaire capable of drawing inspiration from something as mundane as a tombstone (“In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”) and a top-shelf bluegrass and Americana (which didn’t even exist in ’74) picker as demonstrated by Richard Betts’ stellar solo debut, Highway Call.
And yet, “Blue Sky,” and its latter-day rewrite, “Back Where it All Begins,” are stone Southern-rock classics.
Betts parted ways with his band in 2000 - whether he quit or was fired depends on whom you ask - and my interest waned. When I finally saw the band again at the 2008 Penn State event for then-candidate Barack Obama, I learned why; the group just wasn’t the same.
Even Haynes, the prodigal Brother who returned to the band after Betts’ inglorious departure, knew it.
“As I’ve also said many times, when I think of the Allman Brothers Band, I automatically think of the original band with Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, who unfortunately passed way too soon, and although I’m extremely proud of my work with the band, that will always be the case,” Haynes said in eulogizing Betts.

Different Parts of Loom and Their Functions
A loom is a mechanical tool used to weave fabric by inserting yarn for the warp and weft. The main mechanical weaving tool in weaving machine technology is the loom. However, a variety of looms are utilized for weaving tasks. Altering the machine setting also results in the production of various types of designed fabric.
A loom is a mechanical equipment that mechanically interweaves threads to create fabrics that can be used for industrial or dress-related purposes. Given that looms are used to manufacture cloth. Man first utilized a handloom to produce cloth in the early days of fabric manufacturing. With the advancement of the loom, the weaving mechanism altered over time. In keeping with modern times, the looms used to make fabrics have high production rates as well as complicated design production rates.
Shaft, Heald:
The shedding mechanism is included in this section. A heald shaft is made in the textile weaving industry utilizing aluminum or wood-based metals. The ends of the warp sheet pass through a number of heddle wires that it carries. The words "heald shafts" and "heald staves" are also used to describe the shafts. The total number of heald shafts varies depending on the weave's warp repetition. The weave's drafting strategy during weaving determines it.
Sley of Lay:
It is composed of wood and consists of a reed cap, a metal sword carried at either end, and the sley race board or sley race. The sley mechanism oscillates. Sley is in charge of using the beat-up motion to drive the final weft pick to the fabric's fell. The sley moves more quickly while traveling near the edge of the cloth and less quickly when going away from it. "Eccentricity of the sley" is the phrase used to describe this uneven movement. In textile weaving, sley is required to complete the beat-up and to allow enough time for the shuttle to pass through the warp shed.
Shuttle
Shuttles are used in textile weaving as weft carriers to help interlace the weft and warp threads to create cloth. A wooden shuttle that travels from one end of the loom to the other is used. The shuttle moves between the top and bottom levels of the warp sheet as it travels along the wooden sley race. The shuttle enters a shuttle box that is installed at either end of the loom after passing through the warp shed. It should be mentioned that a shuttle typically weighs 0.45 kg.
Picker:
A picker is a piece that can be made of leather or synthetic material. Picker can be positioned on one of the spindles or grooves in the shuttle box. The shuttle is driven by a picker as it moves between boxes. It withstands the force of the shuttle when it enters the box as well.
Reed:
A reed cap secures the metallic comb known as a reed to the sley. Dents are the spaces between wires in a shuttle, which are used in the textile industry. The number of dents in two inches determines the reed's count. In textile weaving, there are various varieties of reed, including regular reed, expanding reed, gauze reed, and V reed.
Reed forces the final weft pick to be laid against the fallen cloth. Together with the healds, it determines the fabric's fineness. The shuttle is guided by a reed as it moves from one end of the loom to the other. It aids in keeping the warp threads in place.
Back Beam:
The backrest is another name for the back beam. Above the weaver's beam, it is positioned. Back Beams can be either fixed or floating. In the first instance, the backrest only serves as a guide for the warp sheet coming from the weaver's beam. In the second scenario, the back beam serves as both a sensor and a guide for detecting the warp strain.
Conclusion:
It is critical to know and understand the loom one is using, in order to learn more and better about it from warp beam to reed, one can only know what issue the machine is having that is causing the problem and how to fix it. While it can be difficult to choose the right machine to ensure that the fabric is even better, they can always rely on Weavetech in the meantime. The fine technology combined with highly advanced tools ensures that the fabric is as fine and detailed as possible. Put your textile in the hands of Weavetech.

Thieves Guild Summary (4/17/24)
Event Summary!
Dibbe, with a lead regarding a hefty safe being transported to Daggerfall, arranges for her fellow thieves to intercept it. The intel that Lord Bernard Auberon was out to Summerset, wheeling and dealing. She did not know much more than that.
Sending a raven to an old acquaintance, a professional lockpicker named Silent-Reed, she was then joined by the local Guildmaster Garrett, Cyprian, Trili, and Pibiha.
Getting in was a simple affair. It took some effort to navigate the Lord’s collection. The vault door to the basement required a specialized key. Upstairs,a nordic door held them back for several minutes until Silent-Reed discovered the puzzle, to which Garrett accidentally solved the second half.
It took a darker turn as they were met with strange technology of obscured origins, a torture rack that was cleaned and transported up to the master’s quarters. A table full of books, golden artifacts, other strangeness. Pibiha raided the master bedroom, locating a subtle alcove from beneath the bed that soon revealed the key to the vault.
After the group finished raiding the upstairs, they headed towards their true bounty.
Silent-Reed took it upon himself to unlock the vault and the entire group was met with a fairly grisly sight. The basement was retrofitted to be a shrine to Mehrunes Dagon, the lord of Change himself. There were torture tables and signs of dismemberment, as well as a crematorium with burned corpses looking to escape, left right where they lay.
All things seemed safe, for a while. The group looted as quickly as they could, with Cyprian wisely warning them not to toil with the belongings of a Daedric lord and cultist. He remained at the stairwell, looking upon his comrades in both disdain and concern in equal measure.
Silent-Reed lived up to his boast of being the best lock picker on both sides of Tamriel, though it was a difficult safe to crack, it all came naturally to him as he could feel the beat of the metal and got it open in ample time.
Just in time for a portal to open on the shrine. Unclear if it was their own meddling, their presence, or if they were just sent there to retrieve the corpses and souls of those slain within the premises, the Thieves Guild found themselves in combat with two scamps and a bloodied Hound of Oblivion.
Cyprian quickly closed the portal to prevent reinforcements. The group made short work of the scamps, but the Hound proved to be an incredibly dangerous foe. It bled Cyprian by mauling his thigh, taking him out of the fight in short order. Trili was also severely wounded late in the fight. The others met it in melee, with Garrett and Dibbe fruitlessly plugging arrows at it only to see it bounce harmlessly against its armor, or the arrows would connect to flesh and yet still do the creature no harm.
Finally, Pibiha finished the creature, crushing its head with a massive swing of her hammer. Wounds were quickly tended to and the thieves dashed out of the unholy shrine with haste. Cyprian demanded his rest and broke away from the team, while the rest counted their earnings (after Dib apologized profusely).
Some trinkets and tantos were kept by a couple of the thieves involved, and the Guildmaster was too exhausted to debate for the usual system of making sure -everything- is fenced off with the proceeds being split among the thieves. Thus, allocation of booty went differently.
Silent-Reed was offered a place in the guild, but he opted to remain independent.
The earnings were thus.
A Dai-Curse Tanto. Designed to mark those who are wounded by it, a Dremora from a daedric plane would know the location of the one struck. Dib was the one to identify it, not disclosing how exactly she’s familiar. She specified that dremora are intelligent, sentient beings so what they could do with the information of one’s constant location could vary between death, to annoyance and inconvenience. The Guildmaster in his wisdom dubbed the threat too great and ordered it to be vaulted under lock and key. Pibiha mentioned her employer would know a worthy target of such a curse, but nobody debated that such a blade remain out of anyone’s hands. Dib specified that for a rainy day, if the Guild comes under hard times, it would fetch a price exceeding five digits, even six to the right person.
There were then three rings. Two were atronach summonings, a storm and flame. Permanent summonings unless slain or ordered to dissipate, and the rings would need recharging. Silent-Reed took the Ring of Flame Atronach for his payment for the evening, undoubtedly striking a decent price on the enchanter’s market.
The third and most powerful (and most expensive), was a Ring of Regeneration. When worn, one’s wounds would consistently close and seal.
There were then the Shoes of Bounding. Decently cobbled shoes but otherwise fairly mundane, allows the user to run faster and jump much higher.
Garrett also grabbed himself an ornate Altmeri-made golden vase. Very shiny, not a bad piece to sell off or present on one’s mantlepiece. There was also a clockwork planetary device, undoubtedly the property of Sotha Sil himself.
Among other things.
The rest, under the Illiac Bay Thieves Guild doctrine, is to be fenced away and the earnings passed around to the thieves that worked for it. An undoubtedly decent haul, well earned from an intense battle.

One of the people who heard it was Elvis who decided to cut it, obviously feeling a kinship with the wandering guitar picker in the song. At the time, he was putting together songs for his movie Clambake and did some sessions in Nashville. Along with Nashville heavies like Chip Young, Charlie McCoy, and Floyd Cramer were the surviving members of Elvi’s first combo, Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana.
Unfortunately, they just couldn’t nail the groove Elvis wanted and so he gave the royal decree, “Get me that redneck picker who’s on the original tune.” The way Jerry Reed tells it, he was fishing way out in the South Georgia swamps when he got the word and made it to Nashville in 45 minutes. I’m sure he exaggerates but the combination was dynamite.
This song has been called one of pure joy as the band spins off into a little of Ray Charles’s classic “What I’d Say” just for the hell of it. And dammit, they kept playing, busting out a ripping rendition of Jimmy Reed’s “Big Boss Man” and another one Reed seems to have written just this session, the appropriately titled “U.S. Male.”
Unfortunately, that’s all they got down. As we said earlier, Elvis was putting together songs for another one of those usually forgettable soundtracks to his equally forgettable movies. However, he was upset that his “Hollywood Era” meant an entire generation of popular music passed him by. So for Clambake, he went back to the country and blues he grew up on while telling his music publisher to look for songs like that.
And that’s where shit happens. A guy named Freddy Bienstock worked for Hill & Range Music Publishing. Music publishers make sure the proper people get paid for a song, including performers, songwriters, and just general people who own a piece of a song. Bienstock liked to brag that for the first 12 years of his career, Elvis never looked at a song unless it was cleared by him.
Elvis didn’t write his stuff and Bienstock didn’t like rock & roll, but he’s the guy who brought Otis Blackwell, Doc Pomus, and Leiber & Stoller to Elvis and that’s a promising start. However, everyone got lazy with the soundtracks because, like the movies, they were guaranteed money-makers regardless of quality. So why not dangle a spot on an Elvis Presley album to a young and hungry songwriter who’s willing to give the nice music publisher a huge percentage for giving this chance.
That’s the music business, folks. However, as the decade wore on and the soundtracks started selling less - and songwriting, in general, was getting more respect in the hep world - fewer songwriters would give up that extra dosh. One of those songwriters was Jerry Reed, who had already established himself as a successful songwriter and session musician in Nashville. This did wind up making him a star but Jerry told Bienstock to take a hike regardless.
Elvis left the business to the businessmen (and they screwed him over for trusting them) and it sort of ruined the overall vibe. “Guitar Man” was a Billboard Country chart topper and hit 43 on the pop charts. Clambake continued the downward slide of the soundtracks, just squeaking out a Top 40 and selling barely 200,000 copies. He had two more to do before the‘68 NBC comeback special that revitalized his career.
But that’s a whole ‘nother story.

“Everything You Do In Life Comes From Horseshoe Crab Blood. Vaccines, Antibiotics And So Much More.”
The blood of the horseshoe crab provides a valuable medical product critical to maintaining the safety of many drugs and devices used in medical care. A protein in the blood called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) is used by pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to test their products for the presence of endotoxins, bacterial substances that can cause fevers and even be fatal to humans. The LAL test is one of the most important medical products derived from a marine organism to benefit humans.
Why is the Horseshoe Crab the original "blue blood"? A horseshoe crab's blood has a blue to blue-green color when exposed to the air. The blood is blue because it contains a copper-based respiratory pigment called hemocyanin.
