There's nothing quite like a child's imagination! Expansive, creative, determined, all-encompassing, children's imaginations are boundless and ever so entertaining. And one of my favourite examples of this is Kathy Stinson's "Red is Best" (1982), illustrated by Robin Baird Lewis. Well past the quarter century mark, this clever little book in which a child extols the magical virtues of the colour red speaks to the child in all of us: red is wonderful BECAUSE IT IS! More interestingly, perhaps, for those of you who are aware that yours truly is autistic, I find that it provides a fabulous glimpse into what many parents see as the "unfathomably" stubborn dedication of autistic children to certain favourite things - colours, items of clothing, comfort objects, toys, etc. We love them with a pure, instinctive joy, sometimes for reasons we can explain (a colour is "happy", a shirt is beautifully soft), other times inexplicably, but always because they bring us some genuine joy or good feeling. You don't need to understand it, you just need not to dismiss it! Instead, open your heart to that instinctive, childlike joy of reveling in simple pleasures. Like red.
