Beauty in Splash Art 3

League of Legends splash art is, on the face of it, perhaps an odd place to go looking for beauty. These are JPGs whose first and primary function is to hawk video game cosmetics for a free-to-play game, it's not exactly the sort of thing you expect artists to particularly flex their creativity for.

And true enough, a lot of splash art is fairly rote. Here's a character, wow look at their cool pose, don't you want to spend dollars to own this, and so on.

But sometimes, one of the artists working at Riot, or at their outsourcing studios, seems to get a bee in their bonnet, or maybe they just get excited about an opportunity to practise craft, and you get splash art that tries to do something more than simply sell the product, or artwork which displays a real flex of technical skill, often in ways which are functionally invisible at any of the common resolutions that the art will ever be displayed at.

There is genuine reward to be found in those pieces, in zooming in close and marveling at the level of effort spent. So let's spend about an hour doing that!

Hellooo. Well, this isn't a request or anything, don't worry. I was just observing the way people 'made an s/o' to Thorfinn based on your wonderful, stupendous fanfic, Dante Alighieri could never— anyway, I have a very different vision of an 's/o' for Thorfinn, let's go:

Actually, it might not be that different, but my 'OC' is based on certain characters (of course) who have a certain kind of 'vibe' like Thorfinn. I don't think Thorfinn would need another cold person in his life, you know? He doesn't need someone like him, he needs someone different, someone who makes him realize things and reflect. Not necessarily older, they can be the same age, but with different perceptions of life because of their different upbringings, and that's where the key is.

I'm not going to go into too much detail about my OC's backstory unless it's relevant, so we'll leave it aside for now (and I don't feel the need either, it's a considerably different backstory from Thorfinn's, but it makes the least sense for them to interact together). One of the characters that fits well with Thorfinn is Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen. He is an extremely kind and empathetic person, he just doesn't show it, but he also doesn't hide that he cares about people, he may say that he is selective in who he saves, but he never gives up regardless. Megumi hates bad people, he said so himself, so if someone like him met Thorfinn for the first time, they would feel a lot of disdain from his attitude and indifference towards the others, but the more time they spend by each other's side, the more he realizes that Thorfinn... isn't that bad, you know? And they starts to be more careful with their words, starting to worry about him against their will and to see him as a kind of friend.

Now the other character... well, I think Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad would fit in well too. Jesse has that whole 'would-be-gangster' attitude of his, but everyone knows he's the best boy with lots of love to give in his heart. Someone like him at Thorfinn's side would be a big problem: they wouldn't stand each other! They would always fight, annoying each other, but when they realize that one or the other gets hurt or gets very sick, they stop fighting and start, let's say, 'enduring' each other's existence. Thorfinn has never been a heartless monster, in fact, he has a lot of heart and, for those who have read the manga, you already understand that he had tried to save a lot of people, he cares about people, he always has, he just has an emotional block. I've been through that myself, and I still have a little, that's why Thorfinn is someone so 'relatable' to me.

I don't think there's much else, but to close with a flourish: Xayah from League of Legends. She was literally released together with another champion, called Rakan, and they are a couple in the game, they have interactions together, etc. Xayah's someone cold and cutting, but around Rakan, she's a sweetheart (not leaving her personality aside, of course). She's protective and very mature, and honestly, Thorfinn really needs someone like that in his life. To protect him, man. He doesn't have the strength for that. He needs to be taken care of by someone first, someone mature enough to realize that his whole bully stance is just a shell, and she sees through it, and even though he refuses her help because he can't accept it (yes, he doesn't refuse because he wants to, he refuses because he can't accept it), she persists until he gives in and lets him take care of her. This reminds me of two phrases from her Redeemed Star Guardian skin, 'Love is beautiful—annoyingly, frustratingly—beautiful', and 'Please, the darkness is so last-season'. The first sentence says it all by itself, but the second one is as if she said that being emo is no longer worth it and that he should embrace his true self, which was hidden beneath many, many layers.

Thorfinn being with someone who is different and brings up different perspecives and appraoches to his everydays problems and challenges IS key and very important for him to form a bond imo! Einar to that is an great example to that!

big fat fkning applause to the first example, honestly Megumi such a great example for an "side of the same coin" s/o for Thorfinn. Someone who is capable of good and kind acts and chooses who deserves them based on who they are BUT still bears a big enough heart to share their kindness with everyone aka cannot really give up on people even when they tell themselves they have to. It would confuse Thorfinn soooooo much since they probs end up doing what is right at the end of the day even when it actually pisses them off and they cannot explain why they did the things they did lol. A lot of discussions would follow as they both open up and try to dig into their souls on why they do what they do and who they truly are inside.

I dont know abotu Breaking Bad but someone who is a 'wannabe viking' would so funny lol. Maybe someone who takes on the persona to seem intimidating and scary for survival? Thorfinn sees through them respects them EVEN LESS than the real vikings, calling them a imposter, a joke, an honorless wannabe warrior and coward, and it would end up in lotsa bickering lmao. Perhaps once both have the balls to show their humanity, their 'weakness' they come to connect and maybe help each other survive in a world where you have to play the role of the hunter and not the prey to live and to 'win'.

Again, also know nothing of LoL, only everything Arcane covers/takes inspiration from (season 2 in november woohoo!) but someone mature and willing to help??? Yes, please. In fact imo Thorfinn would not only need that in general, but also need that to open up. Nothing else on the sea is like that and someone who cuts down enemies and treats him with soft yet chafed hands that would confuse but slowly feel welcome to him. And 'Love is beautiful—annoyingly, frustratingly—beautiful', mwah mwah that is just so War Arc Thorfinn it hurts. Let him have an uh actual mature adult in his life that cares.

idk if it’s what rito will go with ( actually i can pretty much bet it won’t be lol ), but i really like to think xayah’s the first guardian to learn how to balance light and darkness... especially after falling.  no one’s come back from falling, or at least not back to the light.  but rakan’s purifying of her and xayah understanding how to balance it unlocked a new era so-to-speak.  and it’s helped to unlock akali’s new ability, helped to free rakan from the darkness, and maybe even helped unlock the magic that allowed harp to be freed. in three years rito will do something that completely counteracts this i imagine but for now... xayah’s paved the way for new magic and new balance.  ( spurred by rakan, because he technically discovered the magic first, but was lost before mastering it while xayah was able to take it and figure it out. ) because imo the twilight star is not evil, even despite zoe’s tendency to behave that way.  zoe leans more towards chaos, and that’s what the star represents, as well.  zoe’s darkness just twisted her chaos towards the evil spectrum; controlled by her hurt and agony just as she forced xayah to act.  and whether she’s redeemable or not is another story... but ultimately the twilight star is neutral.  it works purely on the chaos of energy as a concept. xayah’s learned how to take the chaos and truly maintain neutral stance or use it for a benefit instead of an evil.  though she might enjoy a bit of evil still on occasion... if zoe were to actually perish somehow or relent her position as the twilight star and the power passed to xayah as it’s somewhat started, she would take the more middle ground of life.  xayah’s come to believe the first star might have good intentions but is too blinding... while the dark star is clearly misguided but capable of good.  she would ultimately try to be good, of course, and act on the love she’s learned, but there is still an uncertainty with how the light has been handling situations, as well.

Rakan - Riot Verses

*Most verses are linked with Xayah as their skins are often released in pairs. However interactions with other character can of course occur without Xayah's presence or (if shipping is of interest) in verses in which they do not meet. Feel free to talk to me about it. Below are his standard, as Riot writes them (mostly) skin line verses.

Standard

Rakan can be seen in towns across Ionia, dancing and singing for the enjoyment of others (and himself, of course). He's long since left his home lands in order to learn more about the invading humans in hopes that he can draw their attention to the plight of the wild magic and the vastaya. He's vibrant, loud and always on the move. Most recently, he can be found with Xayah and her freedom fighters. He loves her more than even himself and is willing to do anything for her and their people.

Cosmic Dawn

Rakan is the dawn itself, a sun rising above the horizon. He dances through the cosmos, bringing light to the darkness, following forever after the shadowy dusk ahead of him.

Star Guardian - Corrupted

When their last mission went south, Rakan and Xayah were left to die. After watching Xayah take her last breath, Rakan followed shortly after. But the two were soon revived in the shadow of the Twilight Star, filled with hatred and resentment toward the team that abandoned them. And while Rakan laments his death, what he truly cannot forgive is watching Xayah fall before his eyes. Even in their second life, she struggles with her corruption and Rakan mourns his lost love. Now, he'll do anything to keep from losing her to the darkness completely, even if it means defeating his former friends.

Star Guardian - Redeemed

Rakan's attempt to sacrifice himself in order to save Xayah is short lived but not entirely unsuccessful. She manages to track him through the cosmos and through the light of the First Star, his mind is freed from the darkness. He's now returned once more to the light, reunited with his home once again.

Elderwood

Rakan is the young fey prince of the Elderwood's Seelie Court, the Day Court. A monarch in all senses, he's endlessly curious about the world beyond his kingdom. Most recently, he's been meeting with the Unseelie Night Court's Princess Xayah, a rival turned lover. While his people object to the union, wishing to remain within their brightly lit dream, Rakan can't help but be drawn to that which he doesn't know. Perhaps a dance partner is just what his kingdom needs.

Arcana

A resident of the poorer Lower World, Rakan's life was simple. So long as he had his music, he was content, even as he existed underfoot of the Archetypes. But after a chance encounter with the Higher Arcana's Xayah, he is anything but content. Not until they can be together. And even if the world itself should rewrite the patterns set before them, he won't stop until he's beside her, following her in their forbidden dance.

Broken Covenant

Rakan once lived contently as a poor thief, eking out a simple existence with his lover Xayah. But his antics brought him too close to the sun and he soon found himself at Vladimir's mercy. On the verge of death, Xayah pleaded for his life. In exchange for Vladimir's mercy, Rakan was revived as a Neverghaast, a being not quite dead but hungry for the Breath of Life, Aspira. Xayah, to pay her debt, spies on the world above. And Rakan, now trapped in the shadows, fears the monster he's becoming.

Dragonmancer

The only thing Rakan has ever taken seriously in his life is his love. While seeking new strength and new dances, he is swallowed by the darkness of his worst nightmares. But no shadow can hold his brilliance for long. Thinking only of Xayah and the life he longed for fighting beside her, he emerged victorious and banished the shadows away. The Devotion Dragon, watching from on high, saw a kindred spirit in Rakan and granted him power to match his soul.

Modern (Musicverse or other similar riotverses)

Rakan learned to dance before he learned to walk and he's been moving ever since. Now, he lives life to the fullest, a full time dancer combining the traditional dances of his heritage with a more modern twist. He has an avid social media presence, performing anywhere from clubs and theaters to street corners and protests. He believes dance and music are forces to bring people together. And if he can use his powers of beauty and theatrics to help his renegade girlfriend fight against The Man, then all the better.

Wild Rift Skins Are Finally Coming to League of Legends After Years of Players’ Appeals

Exclusive League of Legends: Wild Rift skins will be made available for the PC version of the game, according to Riot Games. Jeremy "Brightmoon" Lee and Andrei "Meddler" van Roon updated their video from last month in which they discussed Riot's plans for League of Legends skins in the future. Fan favourites Star Guardian Seraphine, Redeemed Star Guardian Xayah, and Redeemed Star Guardian Rakan are among the first Wild Rift-only skins to be released for League. Three years after the release of the first Wild Rift exclusive skin, Riot confirmed that some of the mobile-only cosmetics will debut on the PC client as well. Although Brightmoon and Meddler didn’t share the exact timeline of when League fans can expect these skins to transition to the PC version of the game, they certainly let the community rejoice at this news. While some might think that there is “no logical reason” to why Wild Rift should have exclusive skins, others might dispute that the two games are built on different engines. It’s therefore rather difficult, if not impossible, to transport one model into the other game in a matter of moments. However, many cosmetic models in Wild Rift are undeniably more detailed than the ones in League, as showcased by Reddit user MonstrousYi. Since the mobile version of League launched, fans have asked for Wild Rift skins to be transported on PC as well. The 3D detailed models of the champions and exclusive skins, and the various thematics exclusive to Wild Rift have made PC-only players envious, who sometimes are stuck with decades-old models. But while bringing Wild Rift exclusive skins to League is sure to produce a positive reaction from the community, making an effort to revitalize some older-looking champions with ASU and VGU is sure to be a home-run for League players. And for that, Riot also shared that they will be looking at updating some of the cosmetics that came out way before Wild Rift was even theorized, like Rugged Garen.
