Week 6 -
When reading the article of A Typographic Exercise to Readdress Design History’s Gender Imbalance, one of the poster that really stood out to me was Strange Lab #2 poster for Muriel Cooper. Designed by Maja Reddlin. The reason why I really like about her design is that fact that it makes the viewer look at the piece of design to get the meaning behind the poster. If one were to observe the poster, Reddlin played with the scale of the letter and the title of the poster which is “Muriel” the letters are the biggest things on the poster especially the R and U on the poster, and also having the little stars on the back of the poster moving downward leads the eye down but it can also be read upward as well based on the viewer’s perspective. I like how the designer make use of all the spaces of the poster as well making use of all the space not leaving any large negative space between the letters and the letters are confined within a certain area which isn’t overwhelming as well. I also like how the artist also used two different style of fonts for the letterforms and the number forms, how the letter forms has perfect and smooth and curved and are filled in white while the numbers are blocky in appearance and they are outlined by white rather than filled in making it stand out from one another and both aren’t overwhelming either one, meaning there is a sense of balance in the poster. By looking at the poster I also like how that the poster has three of the letters that is attaches to the edge of the poster, I mean how the R, U, and L has a part of the letter that touches the boarder of the poster which guides the viewer through the poster in someway.

Journal 6 - “Marginalized Designers”
When I was reading the first article, one work that caught my eye was Figure 1 which was designed by Maja Reddlin, a student at Burg University of Art and Design in Halle. Reddlin designed this poster with the inspiration of Muriel Cooper. As the director of the MIT Press, a university press affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cooper helped introduce a Bauhaus-influenced design. One of her more well-known designs is actually the MIT Press logo (figure 2). At first glance, this might not even seem like a logo and just a array of lines. It is only until you look closer that you see that it is actually the letters “MITP”. I just love the way that Cooper uses line and breaks it down into its simplest forms.
Another artist I was interested in after reading the second reading was Laini (Sylvia) Abernathy. According to the article, “Abernathy’s career is tied chiefly to her husband, with whom she collaborated often.” After doing some research on her, it was difficult for me to find articles written about her, showing that she is a not very well-known designer. Figure 3, Sun Ra’s Sun Song Record Sleeve was the piece that stood out to me. One thing that I did find was that around the time that this design was created, Martin Luther King had moved to Chicago temporarily. The article suggests that “…perhaps the sentiment of light shining on their city is shared by both the musician and designer.” What I find interesting about this design is this feeling of freeness that it evokes. Color, line, and rhythm are prominent in this design and helps give the design a lively look to it. Even though I do not know what this song sounds like or is about, the record sleeve on its own makes it seem like a playful, dance like song.
