Day 103 of sophomore year: Tonight was winter formal, and it was fun. I took my sister Victoria who didn't have as much fun, but it was still a fun night. I enjoyed dancing with my friends, and getting to look like a queen for a night. Tomorrow is Victoria's birthday. I'm so excited. Hannah Montana marathon! 23 days till Christmas.

Upcoming Weekend Events

Hi, I’m Tom Wang. Currently, I’m volunteering on a sub-committee that’s planning the annual gala for Uptown! Entertainment Alliance (UEA). The gala will be held THIS Saturday, October 11th, at The Winterthur Museum & Garden in Delaware. The theme of the evening is Vintage Hollywood.  From 7 – 11 PM, we’ll feature live music with Sara Michaels & Friends opening the festivities. Then, Contagious – a ten piece party band - will play upbeat standards & top 40 hits. Also, expect dancing, prizes, silent and live auctions and plenty to eat and drink. Come dressed in cocktail or black tie attire or as your favorite vintage Hollywood movie star. I’m proud to say I’ll be emceeing the event, which will include a briefing from UEA President, Tom McEvoy. Tickets are $125 per person with proceeds going to help renovate the old armory at the corner of High & Washington, and help bring a theater to West Chester. The mission of UEA is to promote cultural, economic, and civic life experiences in our community through live theater, music, dance, film and other local events in the heart of West Chester, Pennsylvania’s historic district.  The mission is fulfilled by repurposing and renovating the historic West Chester Armory – located at 226 N. High St – into a theater for film and live performance. West Chester’s new theater will become the cultural hub for more than 472,000 indviduals within a 30 minute radius of Downtown West Chester. UEA has embarked on a Capital Campaign to raise $3.75 million to bring a theater to West Chester.

This Friday, October 10, I’ll turn 51 years old. That evening, UEA will hold a special double-feature film event in the Knights of Columbus hall, 110 W. Market St in WC. The two movies being shown are near and dear to me as they star one of my performance heroes, Robin Williams. When I was a kid, there were a few TV shows that my parents and I regularly watched, including All In The Family, M*A*S*H and Happy Days. Upon seeing the Happy Days episode in which Robin Williams made his television debut, my dad declared with utmost certainty, “That guy is going to be a huge star.” How right he was. Robin Williams made his mark on me and much of my generation through his comedy (If you haven’t already, see Robin Williams: Live at The Met), late-night talk show appearances and numerous TV and film roles.  Those in Hollywood who speak of the late, Mr. Williams say he was, “generous and giving.”  On Friday, October 10, UEA will be showing Hook, Stephen Spielberg’s timeless adaptation of Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie’s character, Peter Pan.  Dustin Hoffman plays the title role, with Williams as the mischievous flying young man who refuses to grow up. Following Hook, will be the film in which Williams won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Gus Van Sant’s Best Film Oscar nominee, Good Will Hunting. My wife, Denise, and I enjoyed this classic while on our honeymoon in Hawaii, predicting that Williams would receive many accolades for his work in it. This movie also put Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on the proverbial Hollywood map. Hook will begin at 5 PM and after an intermission, we will show Good Will Hunting at 8 PM. Feel free to come out to one, or both! FYI – Hook is rather lightweight, but is rated PG, while Good Will Hunting has a deserved R rating.  Tickets are $5/each or $7.50 for both films. It's Gala Time!

Uptown! Entertainment Alliance is thrilled to present our Third Annual Red Carpet Gala, continuing efforts to bring a theater to West Chester.  Like the previous two galas, this year’s event will include food and festivities of a top-shelf variety. It will be held on Saturday, October 11th, 2014 from 7 PM – 11 PM at Winterthur Visitor’s Center, 5105 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19735. The theme is Vintage Hollywood so come dressed as your favorite movie star from that era. Otherwise, black tie or cocktail wear is encouraged. Some have inquired, “Why is the gala being held at Winterthur?”  Well, to be frank, it is the only setting within a 20 mile radius which can accommodate the estimated number of guests - we are expecting 400 people! Although the previous galas were held locally (West Chester Historical Society & The Armory respectively), the lovely Historical Society isn’t large enough and the Armory itself is currently a work in progress.  Also Winterthur gave us a significant nonprofit discount that made it an even more attractive spot – thank you Winterthur! The Gala will feature musical performances from Sara Michaels and Friends, as well as the high energy, 10-piece band, Contagious. Of course, dancing will take place and heavy hors’ d’oeuvres, high spirits and a silent auction will be offered. Restaurant Associates has signed on to provide the menu and Boxcar Brewery and The Artisan's Cellar will be donating beer and wine (bring your flask if you want something else!). The Warner Brothers classic, Oscar-winning film, Casablanca will be shown (weather permitting) on a large outdoor screen courtesy of the West Chester Film Festival. Items to be bid on via the silent auction will include a proof of artist James Talmadge’s “Concert In Blue,” golf and lunch at Bidermann Golf Course, a private historic walking tour of West Chester, a wine tasting at Kreutz Creek, not one but TWO vacation homes to bid on, a backstage tour of CBS 3, tickets to shows and much more. I’m especially excited to act as the evening’s Emcee.
