What is Pilonidal Sinus?
Pilonidal Sinus is a cyst or sac containing hair, skin or other debris and is formed at the top of the cleft of the buttocks. More than one cyst may develop and these are connected by tunnels under the skin. A cyst is formed when hair gets lodged inside the skin. While sitting or rubbing friction on ingrown hair can irritate your skin and cyst is formed. Sometimes, it gets infected and puss called abscess is formed. These are common in males who have sitting jobs like Truck or cab drivers or IT company employees.
Risk Factors or Causes of Pilonidal Sinus
It is commonly found in men as compared to women.
Males in their 20’s suffer from this problem.
Obesity or overweight

Thick body hairs
Previous surgery of Pilonidal Sinus or cyst
Diagnosis of Pilonidal Sinus by Doctor
Pilonidal Sinus is diagnosed by a doctor doing a physical examination of the patient. If there is severe infection the only blood tests are required. No other imaging tests are recommended for this problem.
 Home Remedies for Pilonidal Sinus
Home remedies can help reduce the pain and swelling of Pilonidal sinus. Some of the home treatments are as follows:
Exercise can help to improve blood flow.
You can apply castor oil to reduce inflammation.
Sitz Bath: Sitting in warm water can relieve pain.
Apply essential oils to fight infections.
Vitamin C and Vitamin A can also help in the healing process.
Treatment for Pilonidal Sinus
As already stated above surgery is recommended only in severe conditions by the doctor. Following are treatment options for Pilonidal Sinus:
Wide Excision: In this wide bore local excision is done by the surgeon and cavity is left open to heal on its own. It takes almost 3 months for the healing process.
Excision with primary closure: In this abscess is removed surgically and a wound is closed with stitches. It takes only one month for the healing process but there are 20-25% chances of infection. In that case, surgery is again performed and the wound is kept open for healing.
Z-plasty, Cleft Lift or Cleft Closure and Limberg Flap or Gluteal Flap are other treatment options. These procedures are minimally invasive but the patient has to be hospitalized for a couple of days after the surgery and also there are chances of recurrence of the disease.
LPP ( Laser Pilonidoplasty ):  It is the advanced laser procedure for Pilonidal Sinus. It was introduced in India at Healing Hands Clinic. Majority of the patient can start working from 3rd or 4th day of surgery. Faster recovery with negligible pain is the main advantage of this surgery. Recurrence rate using this technique is almost negligible.
 Prevention of Pilonidal Sinus
To prevent cysts from forming again, avoid sedentary situations. If you have long hour sitting jobs, even then try to walk for 1-2 minutes in nearby area after every one hour. Also, keep that area clean.
