If seeing news is bothering you that much then you need to cut it out of your life as much as possible. Don't visit news sites. Unfollow anyone who posts about current events or politics. Don't flip through channels or watch random videos that an algorithm recommends you. I'd recommend downloading BlockSite and UnDistracted. BlockSite will let you blacklist any site you want so you can't even go there by accident, and UnDistracted will remove all the algorithm stuff like trends and recommeneded follows and advertisements from sites like Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, and YouTube.

Trust me, it's very much okay to not be plugged into current events. I detox multiple times per year, and even when I'm active I mostly just talk about politics here and on discord and everything else I keep separate. The thing you need to remember is that all news is designed to keep you scared and angry. Both for propaganda reasons and for monetary reasons. However bad the news is making the world seem, things in real life are at least 60% better than that.

Also good to know: if youre worried your material might warp, you can baste stitch it- sew through one layer of fabric near where you will have your seam. Try to capture that inside when you sew everything together. Essential for dresses, fine blouses, anything with a silkiness or stretch. Many patterns will call for this and people skip it!!

Also reiterating something from above- USE. THE. RECOMMENDED FABRIC. If your're going to stray, look for something with a similar thickness and tensile strength or youre going to struggle and be disappointed, simple as. Your patterns will almost always list several recommeneded fabrics, and if you're making something up, try to find the recommended fabrics for similar projects (eg dress panta vs. excersize pants will want different fabrics). This seems to be the thing folks flaunt the most and it really does take some knowledge to do it well.

Things I wish I had read in "beginner" sewing tutorials/people had told me before I started getting into sewing

You have to hem *everything* eventually. Hemming isn't optional. (If you don't hem your cloth, it will start to fray. There are exceptions to this, like felt, but most cloth will.)

The type of cloth you choose for your project matters very much. Your clothing won't "fall right" if it's not the kind of stretchy/heavy/stiff as the one the tutorial assumes you will use.

Some types of cloth are very chill about fraying, some are very much not. Linen doesn't really give a fuck as long as you don't, like, throw it into the washing machine unhemmed (see below), whereas brocade yearns for entropy so, so much.

On that note: if you get new cloth: 1. hem its borders (or use a ripple stitch) 2. throw it in the washing machine on the setting that you plan to wash it going forward 3. iron it. You'll regret it, if you don't do it. If you don't hem, it'll thread. If you don't wash beforehand, the finished piece might warp in the first wash. If you don't iron it, it won't be nice and flat and all of your measuring and sewing will be off.

Sewing's first virtue is diligence, followed closely by patience. Measure three times before cutting. Check the symmetry every once in a while. If you can't concentrate anymore, stop. Yes, even if you're almost done.

The order in which you sew your garment's parts matters very much. Stick to the plan, but think ahead.

You'll probably be fine if you sew something on wrong - you can undo it with a seam ripper (get a seam ripper, they're cheap!)

You can use chalk to draw and write on the cloth.

Pick something made out of rectangles for your first project.

I recommend making something out of linen as a beginner project. It's nearly indestructible, barely threads and folds very neatly.

Collars are going to suck.

The sewing machine can't hurt you (probably). There is a guard for a reason and while the needle is very scary at first, if you do it right, your hands will be away from it at least 5 cm at any given time. Also the spoils of learning machine sewing are not to be underestimated. You will be SO fast.

im mostly into metal, rock and exyu rock. current favs are death (death metal), haustor (exyu rock, trust me, they are AMAZING), motörhead (speed metal) and pink floyd (rock).

if you want to explore exyu rock (ex yugoslavian), i'd suggest haustor and idoli. very fun and bubbly, almost like a sunny day. there are some timid songs, which are as good honestly, if not even better.

I did listen to the new album!! So far my favorite song has to be Caramel. The best way I can tell you why i especially like Caramel is because it's just so catchy. You know how you go on about your day and randomly think of a song? Like, you can hear the song in your head? That's what Caramel is for me. I have also listened to the bands you have recommeneded to me and I can't lie, they feel so nostalgic to me. I would sit on my bed and listen to the songs and imagine myself in an 80s movie. So fun!!

Omg Pisse... I do know some of their songs actually!! Fahrradsattel has to be their most popular song. Though, I find some of their lyrics very nonsensical, for example Fahrradsattel has this repeated phrase "Aber ich will dein Fahrradsattel sein" which transtales to "But I wanna be your bicycle seat". I don't remember the exact song, but one of their lyrics translates to "her tongue smells like ass" and ngl that did make me chuckle hard. Obviously these songs have context and meanings, but for me, someone who isn't deep in the band lore and songs, it does sound sily and fun.

Oh I know, German is a hard language to learn :,) my mom actually used to complain about German being a hard language for her. She still asks me what words she needs to use der, die or das in (sometimes I don't know myself wdioiudhwio). And don't worry about yapping too much! It's actually very fun to read long asks because that allows me to go in depht too hehe. Do you speak any other languages? Are there any you would like to learn?

Review of The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio

oof i cried. this book was recommeneded to me by a colleague while I was working in Spain, which is really interesting. but it is a love letter to new york. a love letter to QUEENS. a love letter to community. a love letter to literature. and a love letter to immigration. Having worked in immigration law and being from queens, I felt this so deep in my bones in so many ways. I saw family and friends in the people she interviewed. Her journalism was fantastic. The aspects of her interviewees that she focused on were so perfect and so contradictory to so many immigration narratives. This wasn’t trauma porn, and I think I was orignally hesitant to read this book because I was worried about that. I love the choice to rewrite people’s stories that might have been unsavory to create a picture that highlights the fundamental good and kindess that all people have.

Also, lord the writing. I loved it. I usually hate when millenials write, especially in first person. But her writing is so natural and so beautiful that I am reminded of some of my favorite authors, like Eileen Myles.

Idk if I can do this book justice in a review but I really loved it.
