TEAK WOOD: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

Tectona Grandis, commonly known as Teak wood is a highly desirable wood that is prized for its exceptional properties. You must have heard about how incredible this wood is or you might even have Teak wood furniture in your home or office!

Teak is an expensive wood as compared to other types of wood but it is also one of the few woods that is extremely long lasting. If properly maintained, teak wood furniture can last upto 70 years!

Characteristics of Teak Wood

Teak can be of any color ranging from a beautiful, rich golden brown to a classy yellowish white, depending on the species of the wood and what part of the tree it is from.

The trees are large and quite tall, upto 130 ft in height and take about 40-80 years to mature. The outer layer, known as sapwood is whitish to pale yellow. The core is called heartwood and has golden brown to dark brown color.

As Teak is a tropical hardwood, its sapwood has high moisture content. The heartwood has dark patches on it sometimes and is harder, stronger, more expensive and more desirable than sapwood.

All trees have natural oils, what makes this wood exceptional is that it maintains its natural oils and rubber even after being cut and processed. The tight, dense grain that Teak has, allows it to retain all the goodness!

The rubber content and the oils present in the lumber give Teak an edge over other woods for furniture making as they make it weather-resistant. It also successfully resists pests and insects, humidity, wind damage and sun damage!

Unlike other types of wood, Teak is not prone to cracking and warping. It does not even splinter. This explains Teak’s exuberant price tag, doesn’t it?

To recognise Teak, it is important to look at its grain which is generally straight. It often has lines of a darker color that run though the wood. You can also determine if it’s teak by smelling it. House Atop a Hill

Summary [mystery, comedy] - There were a number of private detectives in West Virginia. Occasionally, Tinsley wondered if the others ever found themselves fetching groceries on-the-clock, armed only with a feather duster, in an attempt to reclaim a Mayor’s house from a well-dressed stranger.

“—next thing I knew, I was on the doorstep! He just sauntered right on in and made himself at home.” The Mayor looked downright devastated, fiddling with his coat buttons as he tried not to meet the detective’s eyes.

Tinsley wanted to feel sorry for the man but was still dumbfounded as to how he’d come into the situation in the first place.

“Was he armed?” It was the only reason he could think up to imagine why the Mayor had simply stepped aside and allowed his house to be commandeered by a stranger.

The man scrunched up his face, the shameful flush spreading to his ears. “I don’t think so.”

Tinsley sighed, jotting it down in his notepad. “And no one else knows about this?”

“They can’t,” he held up his hands in a flash as if to beg. “That’s why I called you. I need to get this thing resolved before anyone else finds out.”

“Then maybe, uh,” Tinsley looked around the crowded diner, “we should’ve met somewhere more private?”

There wasn’t much more talking after that. The Mayor busied himself with a coffee mug as the detective organized his notes, readying himself to march up to the house on the hill. Sometimes it was best to get straight to the point—especially when the client was right useless at providing any valuable information.

They parted with polite goodbyes, the Mayor staying at the table as Tinsley took his leave. He moved to set a few dollars down for the waitress when the Mayor waved him away. Least I can do, he said. Tinsley nodded and headed out the door, the little bell ringing to signify his departure.

It was a crisp spring afternoon. Half-melted mounds of snow stuck fast in the shade while the rest of the earth turned to soft mud. A small cluster of businesses marked the town square, but aside from that, it was rural. A small logging town, not known for anything in particular—a bizarre place to commandeer.

Gravel squished into the silty dirt with each step, the sounds of squelching and scraping enough to send chills down any outsider’s spine like nails on a chalkboard. But to him, it was home sweet West Virginia. Outlandish tales like the Mayor’s weren’t all that uncommon, but each story was unique enough to warrant his services. Strange occurrences meant he got to keep his job.

The Mayor’s house sat atop a hill, the driveway winding through towering conifers. The nearer he got, the more he began to understand. It was a sizeable structure—two stories of gorgeous, hand-built mansion. Clearly a product of the town’s wealthiest days.

Bare gardens and hibernating shrubs lined the property, eagerly awaiting their resurgence. A carefully arranged stone path led to the doorway. He climbed the few stairs to reach it and stopped. The door was mostly glass. Whoever answered would probably see him first. He sucked in a breath and knocked loud and clear.

A minute passed and he knocked again. Just as he was lowering his hand, a figure descended from the grand staircase within. He felt eyes on him. He was being observed.

The figure moved slowly, taking its time reaching the door. From what Tinsley could tell—male, quite a bit shorter than he, lithe, and careless in the way to sauntered across the hardwood floors.

Soon enough, they stood on opposite sides of the glass, watching one another. The man, presumed to be Mr. Goldsworth, had a devious grin plastered across his face. Tinsley tried to keep his face so as not to betray his curiosities. The door swept open without a creak.

“Ah, you must be the butler.” Goldsworth took a step forward and leaned in the doorway, head cocked.

Tinsley shook his head. “Afraid not. I’m here to speak with the new owner.”

“That would be me.”

“Fantastic.” He pulled the notepad from his pocket along with a pen and began to jab at the text. “Well Mr. Goldsworth, I’m here to inform you that you are trespassing on private property.”

The man balked in mock-offense. “If anyone’s trespassing, I’d say it’s you. Did we not just establish I’m the owner of this fine home?”

Tinsley shrugged and let the notepad slide back into his pocket. “Self-proclaimed owner.”

“I don’t see anyone trying to stop me.”

It was true enough. The Mayor, in his shame, had refused to contact the authorities. He hadn’t had the bravado to stop the man himself and had instead called the first private detective he could find. Two hours later, Tinsley had arrived. To frame the situation— Goldsworth had only been on the property for the better half of a day. And yet Tinsley had never seen a man look more at home.

He was well-dressed, suited for the extravagance even if it found itself in the middle of nowhere. Dark hair, dark eyes, and Tinsley assumed, dark intentions to match. He waited for the man to say more but was met with radio silence as Goldsworth turned his attention over his shoulder.

“If you don’t mind, I’ve got a fireplace to attend to and no one else to do it for me. So—” he made a motion for Tinsley to scram. “Tell the butler to hurry it up if you see him.”

Tinsley sucked in a breath to protest but exhaled when an idea lit up his brain like a shoddy string of Christmas lights. Multi-colored at all angles, tangled up in details, and undeniably dangerous near a suspicious outlet.

“Alright, you got me.” He held up his hands in defeat. “The Mayor sent me up here to pose as a warden. I was actually hoping this was my chance to get out of the butler game, but—”

“The Mayor’s a fool,” the man interrupted, waving one hand in disgust. “I think you’ll find I’m a much more…generous employer.”

Though he’d left all of his things back at a motel room in town, Tinsley felt an invisible sack of luggage fall onto his shoulders courtesy of the statement. Needless to say there was a lot to unpack in that sentiment.

He put on his best butler-speak and went for it. “As you say. It is Mr. Goldsworth, correct?”

“Sure.” He smiled and leaned out of the doorway, taking a step back into the house leaving enough room for Tinsley to slide through.

Not wanting to break his cover before he was more than one step inside, Tinsley went straight for the fireplace. A hearty stack of firewood sat beside it, caged in with black iron bars. He retrieved a couple of logs and arranged them expertly around the flames. He may not have been a butler, but he did know how to tend a fire. Another consequence of being a local.

“Don’t forget to change,” Goldsworth called to him from atop the stairs. The man vanished at the top, disappearing into one of the many rooms, leaving Tinsley alone in the main hall. He was about to start a full search of the ground floor when the voice sounded again.

“And go buy some more food, will you?”

“What happened to the real butler?” Tinsley asked over the large collection of grocery bags he’d set on the table. He’d found the Mayor almost exactly where he’d left him, a few seats over to be precise, chatting with some townsfolk in the diner. He seemed to be pretending it was a catch-up-with-the-people day.

“You mean the housekeeper? She had the day off. She’s only part-time-- lives just up the road. I should, ah, tell her she’ll be taking a paid vacation this week.”

Tinsley pushed a couple of the paper bags aside so that he could actually see the man. “I would do that, yes.”

The Mayor was fiddling with the buttons again, and Tinsley noticed one of them was getting loose. The man finally looked up from them, nervous but thoughtful. “You wanted to know how to take care of the house?”

“Just for a day or so.”

“You could stay in the kitchen,” he suggested, finally managing a bright idea. “There’s a closet with cleaning supplies off to the side. Say you’re making a very complex dish in honor of the house’s…new owner.”

It was visibly difficult for the man to say, and finally he felt the pangs of sympathy. He didn’t disagree the Mayor was a fool, but most people were, himself included.

“I’ll get this thing sorted out soon,” he reassured the man, planting his palms on the table as he rose out of the seat. “Don’t worry about it.”

“Sorry detective,” he looked down at his shoes, “no-can-do.”

Tinsley smiled, but the expression was wrought with pity for them both. He gathered up the hefty load of groceries and began moderate the trek back up the hill.

Goldsworth had yet to reemerge since he’d returned to the house. It was quiet, save for the crackling of the fireplace. He’d added more wood, paying close attention to the quality of the flames. The last thing he needed to do was burn the place down.

A pan hissed as a mess of chopped vegetables met sizzling oil. Sourced from a nearby in a saucepot, garlic-scented steam wafted into the air. Tinsley wasn’t entirely sure what he was making, but he knew how to look busy. Create as many dishes as possible. One burner contained a pot of water which had been boiling for half another. Multiple cutting boards had been dug out from the cupboards, all piled with ingredients which couldn’t possibly form a single, cohesive meal.

He jerked his hand away from the pan as the oil crackled, having met the moisture from the vegetables. He probably should have dried them off first.

“Careful there.”

The voice surprised him enough to nearly send the pan flying. He spun to see Goldsworth making his way into the kitchen, the same grin still curling up the corner of his lips. He leaned both elbows on one of the tall counters and rested one hand atop the other.

“I was, uh,” Tinsley looked over what he’d prepared so far. It was a whole lot of nothing. “I wasn’t sure what you liked. Sir.”

“Well, I’m not so crazy about the outfit after all.”

Tinsley looked down and sighed. He’d found the cleaning supplies earlier, and a few of the housekeeper’s spare aprons. He’d thrown one on over his clothes, having hung his coat up by the door. It was a neat black piece, perfectly acceptable for anyone who was five feet tall, which the housekeeper must have been. On him, however, it was quite the opposite.

“Can’t say I am either. To tell you the truth, I don’t know what the Mayor was thinking.” He earned a laugh from the other man and decided to question him while he was in good spirits. “And you. Any personal preferences I should know about?”

“Yes, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it.” The man stood back up to full height. It wasn’t much of a change. He made his way over to the cutting boards, inspecting their contents. “I won’t be sticking around too long.”

“No?” He watched the man out of his peripheral, stirring the vegetables far more than was necessary.

“Buy low, sell high.” Goldsworth slapped him on the back and shot him a look that said he wouldn’t be getting any more on the subject. The man walked away after that, turning the corner into the living room.

Tinsley finally stopped stirring and realized the carrots had nearly been reduced to mush. Not like pan-frying carrots had been a good idea in the first place. He shot a look over his shoulder to make sure the man was gone and slid the contents of the pan into the trashcan.

He went to retrieve the next vegetable, untying the apron and tossing it over his shoulder as he did so. It landed with a quiet fwhump, and the next set of ingredients sizzled in the pan.

He’d lain the Meal out on the table just as the sun had set beneath the rugged mountain peaks surrounding the town. The trees were bathed in amber light, and the mansion glowed with firelight. Lovely scenery aside, he called it the Meal because there was no one word for it. It was simply everything.

He didn’t stick around once Goldsworth seated himself at the table, toting a collection of files. He flipped the first one open as Tinsley climbed the staircase, feather duster in hand, to do some investigating.

All the lights were off in the upstairs hallway. He flicked them on and stepped into the first room—an office. Presumably, the Mayor’s.

One of the filing cabinets was open. He slid the drawer our further, noticing some sizeable gaps. He assumed those were the files the other man had been walking around with. The other files in the drawer contained a collection of land grants and sales. Most were sales between locals accompanied by the occasional federal exchange. He left the drawer as he’d found it, half open, and went to the Mayor’s desk drawers.

It was impossible to tell if they’d always been messy or if Goldsworth had been rummaging through those as well. He rested his hands on his hips and tapped one foot in debate. Goldsworth had spent half the day hunting for whatever he was looking for, and apparently, he’d found it. Tinsley figured whatever was in those folders would tell him the reasoning behind this whole affair.

He slipped out of the office, flicking off the light and heading back downstairs. The other man was still at the table, food mostly untouched as he scanned through the paperwork. He dragged a finger across the pages, reading intently. Tinsley approached the table, trying his hardest not to look as if he were reading over the other man’s shoulder.

“Anything to drink, sir?” He asked, hands clasped behind his back.

Goldsworth mumbled a confirmation, but no specific request. Tinsley took off into the kitchen and retrieved the first bottle of wine he saw. It was a light red— made from grapes of some hybrid variety. He rifled through the drawers for a corkscrew and once he found one, twisted it deep into the porous material and pulled the cork out with a decisive pop. He returned to the table, holding the bottle with both hands as if it were one a makeshift silver platter.

It was only once he’d reached the table what he realized he’d only set water glasses. He made a split-second decision to go through with it and poured the wine into an empty water glass. And in that moment, he was close enough to read a few precious words on the page.

…for the acquisition of land…natural resources…recipient’s signature…

And then he leaned away from the glass, tilting his head, awaiting dismissal.

“Anything else?” Goldsworth looked up at him, finally remembered he was there, and noticed the wine-filled water glass.

There was the roar of an engine, followed by two headlights illuminating the driveway. The car pulled away, leaving him alone in the house.

He swallowed and thought about what to do next. Then he remembered the fire.

Tinsley waited for the nervous man to explain himself. He had a feeling he wouldn’t have to push.

“I—I just wanted to bring some property back around. There’s not much money in timber these days, detective. Goldsworth shook his head. “No, it’s not.”

Tinsley half-expected the man to whip out a knife and gut him then and there. Or maybe shoot him and bury him in the gardens. But then again, he would be one hell of a deadweight to drag that far. He involuntarily raised up both hands in self-defense, holding his breath until the man spoke again. Or rather, laughed. Goldsworth finally stepped back, placing one hand on hip, and looked him over.

“So, you’re not a butler. I’m betting you’re some kind of spy.” Goldsworth looked lazily around the room. “Who hired you?”

He thought for a moment about how to answer. “The buyers. Wanted to see who they were dealing with.”

The eyes on him became harsher. “Not very trusting, are they?”

He shook his head. “Skeptics. But that’s how they made their fortune.”

The other man seemed to understand the sentiments. He abandoned his stance and crossed the room to a relatively large armchair and sunk into it, motioning for him to do the same. Like walking on eggshells, he did as the man instructed, taking a seat on the couch across from the chair.

“I’m going to give you two options.” He had one arm on each rest, impossibly casual. “One, you leave now. You walk down that hill and never come back. You tell your bosses I check out, and you’re done. Case closed.”

Tinsley sat frozen, waiting for option number two.

“Two means you stick around, gather me a little information here and there, and earn double your paycheck.” Somehow, the man seemed to relax further, sinking deep into the chair.

“Why?” He couldn’t help but ask. Why he’d even give him the option was unthinkable.

Again, the man laughed. It was almost light enough not to be sinister. “You’re the worst spy I’ve ever seen. If you try to pull anything, I’ll know. I always know.”

The logs in the fireplace had been reduced to coals which smoldered with a dying heat. As the glow faded, plunging them low lights, Tinsley felt a shiver run down his spine. All he could see was tiny flecks of ember and the white gleam of teeth. Like those of an animal. He took in a breath to steady his nerves and exhaled.

He slapped both knees and stood up with a purpose. “Well then!”

He felt the eyes on his back, curious as he crossed over to the fireplace, and began adding more fuel. It would need to be rekindled, but that was easy enough. He looked over his shoulder at Goldsworth who watched him shamelessly over the back of the chair. Tinsley set one final log and admired the neat arrangement. It would burn well.

“I guess I have some explaining to do.”

This is especially a problem on the lower end price surfaces and import floors. Good luck trying to blend it in with your previous floor. So if you go this route, end up extra accurate on your measurements. Right now the rage is lifetime warranties on flooring. We stop to think is without a doubt that really even possible? First will that importer or manufacturer really be around a lifetime? A lot of products are produced oversees; the warranty is only good if there is somebody still around for the life of the warranty. Are you going to be able to take the warranty? Also, do you really think that a finish can last a lifetime? For example take a nail and try scraping it across the surface. Sure it is a durable, well applied finish, but it is impossible to make a product that won't get hold of abused at some point in its lifetime. Do you think that the only serious trial your floor will ever see can be a stinky sock? Read the fine print on the warranty and regardless of what it says consider the true replacement cost on the floor. The idea probably only covers the cost of material of the specific damaged product under normal wear and tear. Your product may not be produced exactly the same later (trends and product lines change) to replace the section that is warrantied, so you may have to replace the whole floors years later. You will have labor cost along with displacement of trim, cabinets, and appliances. Also most of these lifetime closes cannot be repaired or sanded because of a micro bevel put on the edge of prefinished floor. Our advice will be instead to buy a quality product that can be refinished and repaired because something will go wrong in the lifetime of the floor; do not get a false sense of security. We personally do not care for prefinished flooring due to installation problems associated with the idea, so our product requires site applied finish. This means that your floor finish if site applied will be better to sand and refinish than a prefinished floor. Also you do not have to deal with that micro bevel groove between each table that tends to fill up with dust and crumbs. Most prefinished hardwood floors really can't be refinished easily. To help sand it off means that the wear layer has to be thicker than the height of the nails and have room to help sand off the micro bevel between boards; that amounts to a lot of sanding. You also will not be able to spot sand and touch up parts of the floor. In a reclaimed product the engineered flooring really shines. Since the nature of gotten back material is rustic with splits, various height, warps and so forth by doing an engineered product we can take away those issues. We match the texture and color that you want in the floor but you don't have to put up with the built in problems that come with installing and living with a reclaimed wood floor. A number of solid wood reclaimed floors have warped in addition to twisted boards, gaps between rows, height difference between rows, holes, and other "nostalgia and romance" that may end up unwelcome after living with the floor for a while. Due to our precise sanding during the lamination process for the engineered product along with after, pieces are more consistent in height, more uniform in texture, fit together tighter, no waste, holes and even cracks already filled, and no sanding necessary after install unless you want to do a light screen or buff.

Some of you may have heard that the Disney corporation is responsible for at least one real, "live" Ghost Town.

Disney built the "Treasure Island" resort in Baker's Bay in the Bahamas. It didn't START as a ghost town! Disney's cruise ships would actually stop at the resort and leave tourists there to relax in luxury.

This is a FACT. Look it up.

Disney blew $30,000,000 on the place... yes, thirty million dollars.

Then they abandoned it.

That's where the factual nature of their story ends. It wasn't because of sand, and it obviously wasn't because "foreigners are lazy". Both are convenient excuses.

No, I sincerely doubt those reasons were legitimate. Why don't I buy the official story?

Because of Mowgli's Palace.

Near the beachside city of Emerald Isle in North Carolina, Disney began construction of "Mowgli's Palace" in the late 1990s. The concept was a Jungle-themed resort with a large, you guessed it, PALACE in the center of the whole thing.

If you're unfamiliar with the character of Mowgli, then you might better remember the story "The Jungle Book". If you haven't seen it anywhere else, you'd know it as the Disney cartoon from decades past.

Mowgli is an abandoned child, in the jungle, essentially raised by animals and simultaneously threatened/pursued by other animals.

Mowgli's Palace was a controversial undertaking from the start. Disney bought up a ton of high-priced land for the project, and there was actually a scandal surrounding some of the purchases. The local Government claimed "eminent domain" on people's homes, then turned around and sold the properties to Disney. At one point a home that had just been constructed was immediately condemned with little to no explanation.

The land grabbed by the Government was supposedly for some fictional highway project. Knowing full well what was going on, people started calling it "Mickey Mouse Highway".

Then there was the concept art. A group of stuffed shirts from Disney Co. actually held a city meeting. They intended to sell everyone on how lucrative this project was going to be for everyone. When they showed the concept art, this gigantic Indian Palace... surrounded by JUNGLE... staffed with men and women in loincloths and tribal gear... well, suffice to say everyone flipped their shit.

We're talking about a large Indian Palace, Jungle, and Loincloths not only in the center of a relatively wealth area, but also a somewhat "xenophobic" area of the southern USA. It was a questionable mix at that point in history.

One member of the crowd tried to storm the stage, but he was quickly subdued by security after he managed to break one of the presentation boards over his knee.

Disney took that community and essentially broke it over its knee, as well. The houses were razed, the land was cleared, and there wasn't a damned thing anyone could do or say about it. Local TV and Newspapers were against the resort at the beginning, but some insane connection between Disney's media holdings and the local venues came into play and their opinions turned on a dime.

So anyway, Treasure Island, the Bahamas. Disney sunk those millions in and then split. The same thing happened with Mowgli's Palace.

Construction was complete. Visitors actually stayed at the resort. The surrounding communities were flooded with traffic and the usual annoyances associated with an influx of lost and irate tourists.

Then it all just stopped.

Disney shut it down and nobody knew what the Hell to think. But they were pretty happy about it. Disney's loss was pretty hilarious and wonderful to a large group of folks who didn't want this in the first place.

I honestly didn't give the place another thought since hearing it closed over a decade ago. I live maybe four hours from Emerald Isle, so really I only heard the rumblings and didn't experience any of it first-hand.

Then I read this article from someone who had explored the Treasure Island resort and posted a whole blog about all the crazy shit he found there. Stuff just... left behind. Things smashed, defaced, probably ruined by the disgruntled former employees who had lost their jobs.

Hell, the locals from all around probably had a hand in wrecking that place. People there felt just as angry about Treasure Island as folks here did about Mowgli's Palace.

Plus there were rumors that Disney had released their aquarium "stock" into the local waters when they closed... including sharks.

Who wouldn't want to take a few swings at some merchandise after that?

Well, what I'm getting at is that this blog about Treasure Island got me thinking. Even though many years had passed since its closing, I figured it might be cool to do some "Urban Exploration" at Mowgli's Palace. Take some photos, write about my experience, and probably see if there was anything I could take home as a memento.

I'm not going to say I wasted no time in getting there, because honestly it took me another year after I first found that Treasure Island article to get around to going up to Emerald Isle.

Over the course of that year, I did a lot of research on the Palace resort... or rather, I tried to.

Naturally, no official Disney site or resource made any mention of the place. That had been scrubbed clean.

Even odder, however, was that nobody before myself had apparently thought to blog about the place or even post a photo. None of the local TV or Newspaper sites had one word about the place, though that was to be expected since they had all swung Disney's way. They wouldn't be out there lauding their embarrassment, you know?

Recently, I learned that corporations can actually ask Google, for example, to remove links from search results... basically for no good reason. Looking back, it's probably not that nobody spoke of the resort, but rather their words were made inaccessible.

So in the end I could barely find the place. All I had to go on was an old-as-hell map I'd received in the mail back in the 90s. It was a promotional item sent out to people who had recently been to Disney world, and I guess since I had been there in the late 80s, that was "recent".

I didn't really intend to hang onto it. It just got shoved in with my books and comics from my childhood. I'd only remembered it months into my research, and even then it took me another few weeks to locate the storage bin my parents had shoved it all into.

But I DID find it. Locals were no help, as most were transplants who had moved to the beach in recent years... or old residents who just sneered at me and made rude gestures the second I managed to say "Where would I find Mowgli's---"

I was in awe when I reached the front gates of the resort. Tremendous, monolithic wooden gates whose supports to either side looked like they must've been cut from giant sequoias. The gate itself had been gouged in several places by woodpeckers and eaten away at the base by burrowing insects.

Hanging on the gate was a sheet of metal, some random scrap, with hand-painted letters scrawled in black. "ABANDONED BY DISNEY". Clearly the handiwork of some past local or an employee who wanted to make some small protest.

The gates were open enough to walk through, but not drive, so grabbing my digital camera and the map, whose flip-side showed a layout of the resort, I set off on foot.

All that remained of any outdoor structures were broken, rotting wood and various charred bits of unidentifiable material. What was most likely an information booth or an outdoor bar was now simply a pile of assorted debris chopped up by past vandalism and ravaged by weather.

The most interesting thing on the grounds was a statue of Baloo, the friendly bear from the Jungle Book, which stood in a sort of courtyard in front of the main building. He was frozen in a jovial wave toward no one, staring into empty space with a silly, toothy grin as bird shit covered whole swaths of his "fur" and vines ensnared his platform.

I approached the main building - the PALACE - only to find the outside of the building covered in graffiti where the original paint hadn't peeled and chipped away. The front doors weren't just open, they had been taken off their hinges and were stolen.

Above the front doors, or the gaping maw where they had been, someone had once again painted "ABANDONED BY DISNEY".

I wish I could tell you about all the awesome stuff I saw inside the Palace. Forgotten statues, abandoned cash registers, a full-fledged secret society of homeless bums... but no.

The inside of the building was so stark, so bare, that I actually think people had stolen the molding off the walls. Anything that was too big to steal... counters, desks, giant fake trees... they were all resting amid this empty echo chamber that amplified my every step like a slow rat-a-tat of a machine gun.

I checked the floorplan and headed to all the locations that might seem in any way interesting.

The kitchen was as you'd imagine... an industrial food prep area with all the appliances and space, no expenses spared. Every glass surface was broken, every door knocked off its hinges, every metal surface kicked and dented. The entire place smelled like very old piss.

The huge freezer, not even remotely cool now, had row upon row of empty shelf space. Hooks hung from the ceiling, probably for hanging cuts of meat, and as I stood inside for a moment, I noticed they were swinging.

Each hook swung in a random direction, but their movements were so slow and small that it was almost impossible to see. I figured it had been caused by my footsteps, so I stopped one from swinging by clutching it in my fist, then carefully letting go, but within seconds it started to swing once more.

What's odd is that the toilets and the sinks (and the bidets in the ladies' room, yes I went there) all dripped, leaked, or just ran freely. It seemed to me that they should've shut the water off long, LONG ago.

There were plenty of rooms in the resort, but naturally I didn't have time to look through them all. The few I did peer into were similarly wrecked, and I didn't expect to find anything there. I thought there was actually a television or radio in one room, as I really think I heard a quiet conversation coming out.

Though it was like a whisper, probably my own breathing echoing in the silence, or just another case of the sound of flowing water playing tricks on the mind, this is what it sounded like...

1: "I didn't believe it."

2: (short, unknown reply)

1: "I didn't know that. I didn't know that."

2: "Your father told you."

1: (unknown reply, or possibly just weeping.)

I know, I know, that sounds ridiculous. I'm just telling you what I experienced, why I thought there might've been something running in that room - or worse, some vagrants who had holed up there and probably would've knifed me.

At the front doors of the Palace again, I figured I hadn't found anything of note and had wasted the trip up.

As I looked out the door, I noticed something interesting in the courtyard that I had apparently missed. Something that would give me at least ONE thing to show for all my trouble, even if it was just a photograph.

There as a lifelike statue of a python, maybe eighty feet long, coiled up and "sunning" itself on a pedestal right in the center of the area. It was almost time for the sun to start setting, so the light fell onto the object in the PERFECT way for a photograph.

I approached the python and snapped a photo. Then I stood on my toes and snapped another. I moved closer again to get the detail of its face.

Slowly, casually, the python lifted its head, looked directly into my eyes, turned, and slithered off the pedestal, across the grass, and into the trees.

All eighty feet of it. Its head long disappeared into the woods before its tail even left the sunning spot.

Disney had released all their exotic animals onto the grounds. Right there on my floorplan map was the "Reptile House". I should have known. I'd read about the sharks at Treasure Isle, and I should have KNOWN they'd done this.

I was dumbfounded, just utterly stupefied. My mouth must've been hanging open for the longest time before I came back down to Earth and snapped it shut. I blinked a few times and backed away from where the snake had been, back toward the Palace.

Even though it was totally gone, I still wasn't taking any chances and backed my way into the building.

It took a few deep breaths and slaps to my own face to get myself right in the head again after that.

I looked for a place to sit down, as my legs were feeling a bit like jelly at this point. Of course, there WAS no place to sit down unless I wanted to recline in the broken glass and dead leaf carpet or haul myself up onto a desk of questionably reliability.

I had seen some stairs near the Palace's lobby and decided to go have a seat there until I felt better.

The staircase was far enough away from the front of the building to be relatively clean, save for a startling accumulation of dust. I pulled a wedge of metal off the wall, once again painted with the "ABANDONED BY DISNEY" motto I'd become accustomed to. I placed the wedge on the stairs and sat on it to keep at least somewhat clean.

The stairway led downward, below ground level. Using my camera flash as a sort of improvised flashlight, I could see that the stair case ended in a metal mesh door with a padlock. A sign on the door... a REAL sign... read "MASCOTS ONLY! THANK YOU!".

This perked up my spirits a little bit, for two reasons. One, a Mascots-Only area would have definitely had some interesting stuff back in the day... Two, the padlock was still in place. Nobody had gone down there. Not the vandals, not the looters, nobody.

This was the one place I could actually "explore" and perhaps find something interesting to photograph or wantonly steal. I had come to the Palace essentially agreeing with myself that it was okay to take anything I wanted because - hey - "abandoned".

It didn't take much to bust the lock. Well, actually that's wrong. It didn't take much to bust the metal plate on the wall that the padlock was hooked to. Time and decay had done most of the work for me, and I was able to bend the metal plate enough to pull the screws out of the wall - something nobody else had apparently thought of, or hadn't been able to do at the time.

The Mascots-Only area was a startling and very welcomed change from the rest of the building I'd seen. For one, every second or third fluorescent light overhead was illuminated, even though they flickered and faded randomly. Also, nothing had been stolen or broken, even if age and exposure were definately taking their toll.

Tables had note pads and pens, there were clocks... even a punch-in clock on the wall complete with filled-out time cards. Chairs were scattered around and there was even a small break room with an old, static-filled television and long rotted-out food and drink on the counters.

It was like one of those post-apocalypse movies where everything is left in the state of evacuation.

As I walked the maze-like sub-basement hallways of the Mascots-Only area, the sights just became more and more interesting. As I went further, desks and tables were knocked over, papers scattered and almost melded with the damp floor, and a large carpet of mold was slowly overtaking the real rotting crimson floor-covering.

Everything was just sort of "squishy". Anything wood disintegrated into mush when I applied even the least amount of force, and clothing items hanging on hooks in one of the rooms simply fell to moist threads if I tried to unhook them.

One thing that annoyed me was that the light was becoming more sparse and unreliable as I went further into the dank, suffocating depths of the place.

Eventually, I reached a black and yellow striped door with the words "CHARACTER PREP 1" stenciled on it.

The door wouldn't open at first. I figured this was probably where the costumes were kept, and I definitely wanted a photograph of that twisted, stinking mess. Try as I might, whatever angle or trick I tried, the door wouldn't budge.

That is, until I gave up and started to walk away. That was when there was a slight popping sound and the door creaked open slowly.

Inside, the room was completely dark. Pitch black. I used the camera flash to look for a light switch in the wall by the door, but there was nothing.

As I made my search, I was jarred out of my sense of excitement by a loud electrical buzz. Rows of lights overhead suddenly flashed to life, flickering and fading in and out like the rest I had passed.

It took a second for my eyes to adjust, and it seemed like the light was going to just keep getting brighter until all the bulbs exploded... but just when I thought it would reach that critical stage, the lights dimmed a bit and steadied.

The room was exactly as I had pictured it. Various Disney costumes hung on the walls, fully put together like strange cartoon cadavers hung from invisible nooses.

There was an entire rack of loincloths and "native" clothes on hangers toward the back.

What was even odder, however, was the coloring of the costume. It was like a photo negative of the actual Mickey Mouse. Black where he should be white and white where he should be black. His normally red overalls were light blue.

The sight was off-putting enough that I actually put off photographing the thing until last.

I took a picture of the costumes hanging on the walls. Upward angles, downward angles, side shots to show an entire row of frozen, putrid cartoon faces, some with plastic eyes missing.

Then I decided to stage a shot. Just one of the bedraggled character heads on the slick, grimy floor.

I reached for the headpiece of a Donald Duck costume and carefully removed it so the thing wouldn't fall apart in my hands.

As I looked into the face of the wide-eyed, moldering head, a loud clattering sound made me jump with fright.

I looked down at my feet, and there between my shoes was a human skull. It had fallen out of the mascot head and shattered into pieces at my feet; only the empty face and lower jaw remained, staring up at me.

I dropped the Duck head immediately, as you'd expect, and moved for the door. As I stood in the doorway, I looked back to the skull on the floor.

I had to take a picture of it, you know? I HAD to, for any number of reasons that may seem silly, but only if you don't think it through.

I'd need proof of what happened, especially if Disney was going to somehow make this go away. I had no doubt in my mind, right from the start, that even if it was just gross negligence, Disney was RESPONSIBLE for this.

That's when Mickey, that photo negative, opposite-Mickey in the middle of the floor, started to get up.

First sitting up, then climbing to its feet, the Mickey Mouse costume... or whoever was inside of it, stood there at the center of the room, its fake face just starting directly at me as I mumbled "No..." over and over and over...

With shaking hands, a violently thrashing heart, and legs that had once again turned to jelly, I managed to lift the camera and aim it at the opposite creature now quietly sizing me up.

The digital camera's screen displayed only dead pixels in the shape of the thing. It was a perfect silhouette of the Mickey costume. As the camera moved in my unsteady hands, the dead pixels spread, marring the screen wherever Mickey's outline moved to.

Then the camera died. Went blank and quiet and... broken.

I raised my eyes once again to the Mickey Mouse costume.

"Hey," it said in a hushed, perverted, but perfectly executed Mickey Mouse voice, "Wanna see my head come off?"

It started to pull at its own head, working its clumsy, glove-clad fingers around its neck with clawing, impatient movements similar to a wounded man trying to pull himself free of a predator's jaws...

As it worked its digits into its neck... so much blood...

So much thick, chunky, yellow blood...

I turned away as I heard a sickening tearing of cloth and flesh... only cared about getting away. Above the doorway out of this room, I saw the final message clawed into the metal with bone or fingernails...

"ABANDONED BY GOD"

I never got the pictures out of the camera. I never wrote the blog entry about it. After I ran from that place, fled for my sanity if not my very life, I knew why Disney didn't want anyone to know about this place.

They didn't want anyone like me getting in.

They didn't want anything like that getting out.

Abandoned by Disney

Some of you may have heard that the Disney corporation is responsible for at least one real, “live” Ghost Town. Disney built the “Treasure Island” resort in Baker’s Bay in the Bahamas. It didn’t START as a ghost town! Disney’s cruise ships would actually stop at the resort and leave tourists there to relax in luxury. This is a fact. Look it up. Disney blew $30,000,000 dollars on the place… yes, thirty million dollars. Then they abandoned it.

Disney blamed the shallow waters (too shallow for their ships to safely operate) and there was even blame cast on the workers, saying that since they were from the Bahamas, they were too lazy to work a regular schedule. That’s where the factual nature of their story ends. It wasn’t because of sand, and it obviously wasn’t because “foreigners are lazy”. Both are convenient excuses. No, I sincerely doubt those reasons were legitimate. Why don’t I buy the official story? Because of Mowgli’s Palace.

Near the beachside City of Emerald Isle in North Carolina, Disney began construction of “Mowgli’s Palace” in the late 1990s. The concept was a jungle-themed resort with a large, you guessed it, palace in the center of the whole thing. If you’re unfamiliar with the character of Mowgli, then you might better remember the story “The Jungle Book”. If you haven’t seen it anywhere else, you’d know it as the Disney cartoon from decades past. Mowgli is an abandoned child, in the jungle, essentially raised by animals and simultaneously threatened/pursued by other animals.

Mowgli’s Palace was a controversial undertaking from the start. Disney bought up a ton of high-priced land for the project, and there was actually a scandal surrounding some of the purchases. The local government claimed “eminent domain” on people’s homes, and turned around and sold the properties to Disney. At one point a home that had just been constructed was immediately condemned with little to no explanation. The land grabbed by the government was supposedly for some fictional highway project. Knowing full well what was going on, people started calling it the “Mickey Mouse Highway”. Then there was the concept art. A group of stuffed shirts from Disney Co. actually held a city meeting. They intended to sell everyone on how lucrative this project was going to be for everyone. When they showed the concept art, this gigantic Indian Palace… surrounded by the JUNGLE… staffed with men and women in loincloths and tribal gear… well, suffice to say everyone flipped their shit. We’re talking about a large Indian palace, jungle and Loincloths not only in the center of a relatively wealthy area, but also a somewhat “xenophobic” area of the southern USA. It was a questionable mix at that point in history. One member of the crowd tried to storm the stage, but he was quickly subdued by security after he managed to break one of the presentation boards over his knee. Disney took that community and essentially broke it over its knee, as well. The houses were razed, the land was cleared, and there wasn’t a damned thing anyone could do or say about it. Local TV and newspapers were against the resort at the beginning, but some insane connection between Disney’s media holdings and the local venues came into play and their opinions turned on a dime.

So anyway, Treasure Island, the Bahamas. Disney sunk those millions in and then split. The same thing happened with Mowgli’s Palace. Construction was complete. Visitors actually stayed at the resort. The surrounding communities were flooded with traffic and the usual annoyances associated with an influx of lost and irate tourists. Then it all just stopped. Disney shut it down and nobody knew what the hell to think. But they were pretty happy about it. Disney’s loss was pretty hilarious and wonderful to a large group of folks who didn’t want this in the first place. I honestly didn’t give the place another thought since hearing it closed over a decade ago. I live maybe four hours from Emerald Isle, so really I only heard the rumblings and didn’t experience any of it first-hand.

Then I read this article from someone who had explored the Treasure Island resort and posted a whole blog about all the crazy shit he found there. Stuff just… left behind. Things smashed, defaced, probably ruined by the disgruntled former employees who had lost their jobs. Hell, the locals from all around here probably had a hand in wrecking that place. People there felt just as angry about Treasure Island as folks here did about Mowgli’s Palace. Plus there were rumors that Disney had released their aquarium “stock” into the local waters when they closed… including sharks. Who wouldn’t want to take a few swings at some merchandise after that?

Well, what I’m getting at is that this blog about Treasure Island got me thinking. Even though many years had passed since its closing, I figured it might be cool to do some “urban exploration” at Mowgli’s Palace. Take some photos, write about my experience, and probably see if there was anything I could take home as a memento. I’m not going to say I wasted no time in getting there, because honestly it took me another year after I first found that Treasure Island article to get around to going up to Emerald Isle. Over the course of that year, I did a lot of research on the Palace resort… or rather, I tried to. Naturally, no official Disney site or resource made any mention of the place. That had been scrubbed clean. Even odder, however, is that nobody before myself had apparently thought to blog about the place or even post a photo. None of the local TV or newspaper sites had one word about the place, though that was to be expected since they had all swung Disney’s way. They wouldn’t be out there lauding their embarrassment, you know?

Recently, I learned that corporations can actually ask Google, for example, to remove links from search results… basically for no good reason. Looking back, it’s probably not that nobody spoke of the resort, but rather their words were made inaccessible. So, in the end, I could barely find the place. All I had to go on was an old-as-hell map I’d received in the mail back in the 90s. It was a promotional item sent out to people who had recently been to DisneyWorld, and I guess since I had been there in the late 80s, that was “recent.” I didn’t really intend to hang onto it. It just got shoved in with my books and comics from my childhood. I’d only remembered it months into my research, and even then it took me another few weeks to locate the storage bin my parents had shoved it all into. But I DID find it. Locals were no help, as most were transplants who had moved to the beach in recent years… or old residents who just sneered at me and made rude gestures the second I managed to say “Where would I find Mowgli’s—“

The drive took me through an inordinately long corridor of overgrowth. Tropical plants that had run rampant and overpopulated the area mixed with the native species of flora that actually belonged there and had tried to reclaim the land. I was in awe when I reached the front gates of the resort. Tremendous, monolithic wooden gates whose supports to either side looked like they must have been cut from giant sequoias. The gate itself had been gouged in several places by woodpeckers and eaten away at the base by burrowing insects. Hanging on the gate was a sheet of metal, some random scrap, with hand-painted letters scrawled in black. “ABANDONED BY DISNEY.” Clearly the handiwork of some past local or an employee who wanted to make some small protest. The gates were open enough to walk through, but not drive, so grabbing my digital camera and the map, whose flip-side showed a layout of the resort, I set off on foot.

The inner grounds of the place were just as overgrown as the entryway. Palm trees stood untended and ragged among piles of their own coconuts. Banana plants similarly stood in their own stinking, bug-riddled refuse. There was this sort of clash between order and chaos, as carefully planted rows of perennial flowers mixed with obnoxious tall weeds and stinking, blackened mushrooms. All that remained of any outdoor structures were broken, rotting wood and various charred bits of unidentifiable material. What was most likely an information booth or an outdoor bar was now simply a pile of assorted debris chopped up by past vandalism and ravaged by weather. The most interesting thing on the grounds was a statue of Baloo, the friendly bear from the Jungle Book, which stood in a sort of courtyard in front of the main building. He was frozen in a jovial wave toward no one, staring into empty space with a silly, toothy grin as bird shit covered whole swaths of his “fur” and vines ensnared his platform.

Just one of the bedraggled character heads on the slick, grimy floor. I reached for the headpiece of a Donald Duck costume and carefully removed it so the thing wouldn’t fall apart in my hands. As I looked into the face of the wide-eyed, moldering head, a loud clattering sound made me jump with fright. I looked down at my feet, and there between my shoes was a human skull. It had fallen out of the mascot head and shattered into pieces at my feet; only the empty face and lower jaw remained, staring up at me.

I dropped the duck head immediately, as you’d expect, and moved for the door. As I stood in the doorway, I looked back to the skull on the floor. I had to take a picture of it, you know? I HAD to, for any number of reasons that may seem silly, but only if you don’t think it through. I’d need proof of what happened, especially if Disney was going to somehow make this go away. I had no doubt in my mind, right from the start, that even if it was just gross negligence, Disney was RESPONSIBLE for this. That’s when Mickey, that photo-negative, opposite-Mickey in the middle of the floor, started to get up.

First sitting up, then climbing to its feet, the Mickey Mouse costume – or whoever was inside of it – stood there at the center of the room, its fake face just staring directly at me as I mumbled “No…” over and over and over… With shaking hands, a violently thrashing heart, and legs that had once again turned to jelly, I managed to lift the camera and aim it at the opposite creature now quietly sizing me up. The digital camera’s screen displayed only dead pixels in the shape of the thing. It was a perfect silhouette of the Mickey costume. As the camera moved in my unsteady hands, the dead pixels spread, marring the screen wherever Mickey’s outline moved to. Then the camera died. Went blank and quiet and… broken. I raised my eyes once again to the Mickey Mouse costume. “Hey,” it said in a hushed, perverted, but perfectly executed Mickey Mouse voice. “Wanna see my head come off?” It started to pull at its own head, working its clumsy, glove-glad fingers around its neck with clawing, impatient movements similar to a wounded man trying to pull himself free of a predator’s jaws…

As it worked its digits into its neck… so much blood… So much thick, chunky, yellow blood… I turned away as I heard a sickening tearing of cloth and flesh… only cared about getting away. Above the doorway out of this room, I saw the final message clawed into the metal with bone or fingernails… “ABANDONED BY GOD”

I never got the pictures out of the camera. I never wrote the blog entry about it. After I ran from that place, fled for my sanity if not my very life, I knew why Disney didn’t want anyone to know about this place. They didn’t want anyone like me getting in. They didn’t want anything like that getting out.

I'm listening to sad music, so have this : Graves dies protecting Newt. He throws himself in front of a spell. Because he, as broken as he is, never deserved someone like Scamander. But the world /needs/ Newt. Graves dies without regrets.

You’re listening to sad music, I’m in a weird sort of mood and have just downed two cups of strong coffee at midnight. Let’s do this thing. Let’s…

Let’s play out what would happen if Graves didn’t die. If, when Newt held out his hand and offered freedom in the quirk of his smile, Graves hadn’t said yes. If, when Newt took his suitcase and his heart and saved the world in a thousand tiny ways, Graves wasn’t following behind him with a shield charm permanently raised and an overused first aid kit in his pocket. If, when Newt’s blood-slick wand was torn from his broken fingers and he used his last breath to activate the emergency protections on his suitcase, when his ribs cave in and his lungs burn as they drown, when his heart thunders too fast and his head swims in dizzy nausea, when the ground falls away beneath him and the sky rockets down to tear him apart -

If, when Newt dies, Graves is in his kitchen, shirt sleeve rolled up and hair flecked with paint as he balances on the worktop to reach the corners of the ceiling.

It’s yellow, the kitchen, yellow walls and a white ceiling, and he’s painting it by hand because it’s important. He’s dripped paint on the counter tops but that’s fine. He’s going to replace those as well, swap out the stately black granite for… wood. He hasn’t decided what kind yet, but he thinks wood. Wooden counters and white cupboard doors.

The kitchen is yellow, and he has a bag of daffodil bulbs waiting to be planted in the window pots. He’s going to paint the entire house eventually, paint over the grand window arches and the imposing bannisters and lay new carpets over the cold and unyielding tiled floors. He’s going to reclaim his life from the shell Grindelwald made of it and he’s going to make himself into a different man. A rougher man, scratched and torn at the edges but still whole enough, a man that lives in a house with a yellow kitchen and daffodils on the windowsill and all his bottles of alcohol poured down the sink and not replaced.

The daffodils are from his mother. She gave them to him when he first came back, when he limped out of hospital and refused the offer of a cane. She planted them for him in a pot he could see from his kitchen window, and she pressed a kiss to his cheek and taught him a charm to hold the onions in place so he could still chop them with only one hand. Graves diligently thanked her and forgot that the daffodils ever existed. He tried the charm once or twice, managed to make himself a decent risotto and a vat of tomato sauce, but he didn’t see the point. He wasn’t hungry.

He wasn’t hungry. He wasn’t tired. He limped through life and squinted at the daylight and tried to think when the sun had come up and if he’d really stayed up all night, and he drank because at least it was something to do. He didn’t think about what had happened. He thought too much about what had happened. He watched dumbly as another owl left another letter and ignored another tentative knock at his door (at Grindelwald’s door while he sat in Grindelwald’s house decorated in Grindelwald’s striking monotones) and told himself that he wasn’t ready to see anyone yet. He’d see them when he was better.

When he was better. Graves was never blind; he knew he wasn’t well. He knew he wasn’t coping, wasn’t dealing, and he knew he wasn’t moving on. It was another point on the list of failures, just like he knew he hadn’t stopped Grindelwald and he hadn’t escaped and he hadn’t fought hard enough to get away. He knew, also, that he was being unreasonable, that expecting himself to just get over it was harsh and unrealistic, that the sympathy people offered him didn’t make him weak and the support people tried to give him didn’t make him selfish. He knew that. He just didn’t deserve it. He was a drunken, self-pitying wreck, an embarrassing caricature of a broken man, and he needed to fix himself. He’d see them when he was better. When he was someone who was worth their sympathy and their support instead of this shameful charade. He just needed time to fix it, that’s all.

He needed time. He had time, in theory, but it slipped away and autumn faded to winter in hazy dawns filtering through closed curtains and stacks of letters that he never read. He didn’t get better. He added it to his list of failures and sometimes he felt like turning to his guilt and snarling at it, asking it what the fuck it expected him to do, what he could ever do to balance it out and make it go away and how he could ever be enough to earn forgiveness for the sins that haunted his faltering steps -

Magic slipped from his grasp. He couldn’t cook without it, couldn’t hold both the chopping board and the knife when he only had one hand to use. It didn’t matter. Maybe it was even for the good, maybe the arm was his punishment, down payment on his debts. The headaches and the hangovers, the choking bile and the wasting stiffness, maybe he deserved it.

In another timeline, he stood at the workshop bench and stared blankly at a pile of diricawl feathers. He held the shaft in his hand and the barbs in his magic, but his magic slipped and he couldn’t get a strong enough hold to strip them. He doesn’t know how long he stands there, in this other timeline, with the feathers gripped too tightly in his hand and his bad knee starting to ache from half-forgotten wounds, but when Newt slides his arms around Graves’ waist from behind and rests his forehead against Graves’ shoulder Graves surfaces like a drowning man.

Newt presses a kiss to the back of his neck and stays there, warm and familiar and home while Graves remembers how to breathe. He leans back, shifting his weight off his shaking knee, and when he tries the spell again his magic is steady and sure.

In another timeline, Graves had Newt. In this timeline, Graves said no when Newt offered him an escape. Winter drips into spring and Graves wears his guilt like a cowl that will devour his soul.

Perhaps it would go on. Perhaps Graves would waste away, worn down a little more each day until there was nothing left to him but piss and vomit, and perhaps he would die in this shell of a house that Grindelwald lived in. Perhaps.

In spring, the daffodils bloom, and Graves sees them from his kitchen window. He is struck by the sudden, devastating thought:

My mother gave me flowers because she loves me.

It burns in his chest, sticking in his throat and shooting agony through his veins.

I don’t deserve my mother’s love, but she gave me flowers and the flowers grew because she loves me

The bottle slips from his hand and shatters at his feet. His vision blurs until all he can see is the yellow of the daffodils and the thought echoes in his head like a single voice against a hurricane:

My mother loves me.

What can his guilt say to that? It adds to his debt, tells him that if only she knew him like he knows himself, disdains him for being unworthy of his mother’s love, for taking advantage of her selflessness, for being a burden on her kindness - but the flowers are in bloom. There are good things in the world and Graves’ doesn’t deserve them but the flowers will grow whether he deserves them or not and his mother gave him flowers because she loves him.

It’s not the same path to healing that he would have taken in another world. It’s not a fast path, it’s not a path that moves only forwards and never backwards, and it’s not an easy path - but it’s a path that he doesn’t have to walk alone. When Graves stands on his kitchen counters and paints his walls yellow, he does it with one hand to prove that he can, and he does it with his mother waving a mug at him and telling him to drink his coffee before it goes cold. When he chooses the wood for the counters his father measures twice and cuts once, when he hangs the wallpaper in his living room they loudly disagree about whether it’s straight or not and offer conflicting advice about shifting it to the left or the right.

In one world, Newt was Graves’ anchor and his rock and step by aching step his salvation against the dark. Broken as he is, he never deserved someone like Newt, but the world needs Newt because he is something good. Graves dies to protect that and he dies with his guilt weighing his heart on the scales and debating whether saving Newt was good enough to offset the thousand ways Graves had failed before.

In this world, Graves clings to the daffodils and pours his alcohol down the sink and paints over Grindelwald’s house until it is his again and he never deserves anything he has, but in this world, he learns that that’s ok. The flowers will still bloom and his mother will still love him and he’s a broken man that can’t fix himself but that’s ok.

He accidentally drips paint in his coffee and his father heaves a long suffering sigh and winks at him while he puts the pot on for more and his mother scolds him for waving the brush around in the first place and in this world, Graves will be ok.

He’ll be ok.
