This isn't about duplicating tapes, its about how you could buy a blank VHS, and when something was on the TV you could hit the 'record' button and have a copy of it forever. Most of my childhood movies were TV recordings.

Same with audio cassettes, "mix tapes" were traditionally made by requesting a song on the radio and then feverishly pressing the record button on a cassette recorder plugged in to the radio the moment they played it.

And all this absolutely was something that distributors sneered and fought against when home media recording became a thing, and factored into the prices they made tv and radio pay to broadcast their stuff, and why they wouldn't allow it (especially movies) until months after they put the videos on sale.
