Violet is the frontman (lead vocals, guitar) for the rock band Chasing Ghosts. The band consists of Violet, his spouse Rebel Saetang (keyboard, vocals) and husband-and-wife duo Emi Moriuchi (violin, vocals) and Kaito Moriuchi (drums). They’ve been enjoying quite a lot of success recently, with the release of their first English-language album, Haunted Hearts.

He loved music from an early age, and both he and his younger sister had voice lessons and instrument lessons (guitar for him, piano for her) when they were growing up. Violet first got the idea that he wanted to be in a band when he was in middle school. He was part of his school band, but he likes to say that doesn't really count, as the school orchestra wasn't exactly playing rock 'n roll. He started writing songs when he was in his early teens. Although he isn't the main songwriter for his current band, he still contributes.

Outside of music, Violet's interests include snowboarding, dancing and gardening. He's a cowplant enthusiast, and also enjoys helping take care of Rebel's bees.

Violet is definitely an extrovert. He's the complete opposite of his spouse, Rebel, who would rather not talk to anyone other than his family and friends. Violet, on the other hand, loves to go out and socialize and meet new people. Sometimes it seems to Rebel that Violet knows everyone in the Mt. Komorebi music scene.

He loves attention, and he likes to be seen at as many social functions as possible, which is a good thing because he's always getting invited to things (and dragging his reluctant spouse along).

Everyone calls him Violet, except for his parents and the government. There are people who know him who've actually forgotten that his real name is Tatsuya, and some people who may never have even known his legal first name.

ABOUT

Rebel is the keyboardist and one of the vocalists of Chasing Ghosts. He's most noted for his keyboard solos, and for his amazing ability to harmonize. He is the band's main composer. He does write some lyrics as well, but he's much better at setting other people's lyrics to music.

"Rebel" is Rebel's real name, a fact which he has a love-hate relationship with. He likes the fact that his name is unique, but sometimes he wishes he didn't have to explain it to people when doing official transactions like credit card payments at hotels, or renewing his driving license. Rebel's mother, a Japanese-Canadian actress, was (and still is) somewhat of a rebel herself, and decided her only child needed a name to match their lifestyle. Rebel's dad is Thai, but that's all he really knows about him other than his surname (which Rebel inherited). As far as Rebel knows, his father has never been in his life, and his mother rarely talks about him.

He has a speech impairment that gets worse when he's stressed or nervous, and he's shy about speaking on stage or giving interviews because of it. He discovered at a young age that his stutter does not affect him when he sings and that it in fact seems to go away entirely when he's singing. He has a beautiful voice and loves to sing, and sometimes likes to say that he found his "real voice" through music. If he's upset, anxious or scared, sometimes he stops speaking altogether, because trying to get the words out is too frustrating for him and just upsets him more. He's been known to go into a quiet room with Violet and literally sing his problem (something he won't do with anyone else, not even Emi or Kaito).

In his spare time, Rebel likes gardening and he enjoys tending to his bees. He has a thing for dangerous pets, which is why he's okay with his spouse's cowplant obsession. Their garden is quite unusual, as they also have a few alien plants along with the cowplants and the bees. He also enjoys reading, and he loves to cook.

Rebel is an introvert, and would rather spend his time quietly at home when he's not performing. But, because his spouse is a social butterfly, he ends up at all sorts of functions that he'd never go to if it weren't for Violet. Violet seems to know everybody, and of course he has to introduce Rebel to everybody.

The paparazzi love Rebel because his looks are so striking. The love is not mutual.

San Myshuno Nights (part three)

After their karaoke number, Taiji and Haru order drinks at the bar. Actually, it's Taiji who orders, because Haru can't read the menu or communicate sufficiently in English. The best Haru is able to do is point at the most colourful looking thing and tell the mixologist, "That, please!"

Haru pays for the first round, so Taiji doesn't really mind that he has to do the talking.

It's all going great until somebody comes up behind them.

Rebel: Look who's here! They s-say the world is a small place.

Taiji recognizes the stuttering voice, and doesn't really want to turn around. He hadn't expected they'd run into anyone they know, much less someone who knows them as well as Rebel, his cousin Violet's husband. In fact, he's not at all thrilled about this sudden development.

Taiji: Ah crap...

Rebel: Excuse me?

Haru: Hey, Rebel! The world is small!

Taiji: What are you doing here, Rebel?

Rebel: You m-mean, here in S-san M-myshuno, or in this bar specifically?

Taiji: Both?

Rebel: Oh. We're here to discuss a m-music video. Our agent arranged a m-meeting for us with a new p-production company.

Haru: Cool. We’re making a new video too. We’re gonna be cowboys. Sparkly cowboys.

Rebel: Sounds appropriately J-pop.

Haru: We don’t all want to look edgy all the time. Some of us like glitter.

Rebel: T-to each their own, I guess.

Taiji: Is Violet here too?

Rebel: Of course he is. You think I'd go out in p-public by m-myself? Like, what if I had to t-talk to somebody?

Haru: You seem to be doing fine to me.

Rebel: Because I know you, dumbass.

Taiji: Don't let Violet see me.

Rebel: Why?

Taiji: 'Cause I don't want it to get back to my father that I was out drinking.

Rebel: You think Violet doesn't know your father's an asshole? That's his uncle, after all. He won't t-tell him shit. Anyway, you're t-twenty now, right? You're allowed to be out drinking.

Haru: Technically.

Rebel: What do you mean by t-technically?

Haru: Sarah doesn't know we're here.

Rebel: Yeah, you know what? I think I'd be more worried about your m-manager than about Taiji's father. He's in a whole other country right now, so he can't reach you. Your m-manager? She can kick your ass tonight.

Taiji: Only if she finds out.

Rebel: Who's gonna t-tell her? Me and Violet aren't the social activity p-police. Go ahead and p-party like a rockstar, if you want. We might even join you.

Rebel: Here's a lesson, kids. This is where t-too much vodka will get you. Never agree to a m-marriage p-proposal when you're off your face on alcohol.

Violet: You proposed to me, the way I remember it.

Rebel: You were off your face as well, and you were so m-mad because you didn’t get a chance to ask first.

Violet: So I said I wouldn’t answer, and I made you count to three so we could both ask at the same time.

Rebel: At least we both said yes.

Violet: Yeah, loud enough to draw attention to ourselves, and then we had to come up with some dumb excuse for why we were yelling “Yes!” in the middle of a restaurant, not to mention what we were doing there so drunk in the first place.

Rebel: Not the m-most romantic situation, honestly. We could’ve done better.

Violet: We probably deserve each other.

Rebel: Hmm... that explains a lot. A conspiracy of destiny.

Rebel: You ever think about life? It's like a p-plate of m-mac & cheese. You devour it like it'll never end, and then suddenly you look down and realize it's already gone, but you're still hungry. So t-tragic. I could p-probably write a song about it.

Cowplant Envy

Here are Violet and Rebel, taking care of some business in the garden. It snowed during the night, but the cowplants don’t seem to mind.

Actually, the neighbours probably aren’t all that envious of Violet and Rebel’s garden, but the guys certainly think it’s a garden to be envied. They have their two magnificent cowplants (Violet’s obsession) as well as a collection of alien plants that Rebel had to get a permit for. They also have some more standard flowers for Rebel’s bees, and a vegetable patch that they’ll re-plant in the spring.

The town received a handful of complaints about the garden, which is why there’s a fence around it now, and a “Beware of Cowplants” sign on the property. The guys weren’t interested in paying a fine, or worse yet, having to destroy their beloved dangerous plants, so they decided it’d be best to do what the town bylaw compliance officer and their insurance company told them to do.

Violet was scolding this one because it tried to offer him the infamous deadly cake. 😆

These guys may enjoy their tough persona, but behind the scenes they have their vulnerabilities, just like everyone else.

Sometimes Violet needs to be reassured that even when the world is out of control around him, he still has his very own safe place, and Rebel sometimes needs to be reassured that he’s capable of protecting as well as being protected. They may not be the most romantic or the most outwardly demonstrative couple, but they are devoted to each other. They know how to be tender in their own way, and they know when a shared moment of intimacy counts most.

The band is made up of two couples. Emi and Kaito are married, as are Rebel and Violet, although most people don't actually know Rebel and Violet are married to each other since they didn't have a public wedding (they were married by a judge) and they didn't make any announcements.

Emi and Kaito met in middle school. Violet met Emi during their first year of high school, and she introduced him to Kaito. Rebel and Violet met at the bike rental business where Violet worked part-time during his high school years.

“Rebel” is Rebel’s real name

"Violet' is obviously not Violet's real name, but a lot of people actually think it is. There are a lot of people who know him reasonably well who have either forgotten that his real name is Tatsuya, or who never knew it to begin with.

Rebel’s father is Thai and his mother is Japanese-Canadian. His dad is not in his life; he was raised by his single mom, who is an actress. His upbringing was essentially travelling back and forth between Canada and Japan for his mom's work, and because of that, he didn't go to school regularly. He had a private tutor who lived and travelled with them.

Violet’s younger cousin, Taiji, is also a famous performer, as part the idol group Sugar Valentine

Emi got her stage name when she spent her last year of high school studying abroad. Someone in her class on the first day misheard her name, thinking it was “Emoji” and confusion ensued for a while until the misunderstanding got sorted. However, for better or worse, “Emoji” stuck to her as a nickname after that.

Kaito wanted to be a chef if he hadn’t been able to break into the music industry.

Violet loves cowplants and even has one tattooed on his leg.

Emi and Rebel have the same birthday, but he's a year older than her.
