7. Yesterday's Gone - Loyle Carner
2017 was another big and progressive year for UK hip hop - Wiley released the widely acclaimed Godfather, Giggs scored a feature on Drake's "playlist" More Life and many new voices crashed onto the scene such as breakouts Stormzy and J Hus. However outside of the grime world, there was also a 23 year old from Croydon writing songs about his friends, family and imaginary baby sister - that's right, in at number 7 on my countdown is the Mercury Music Prize nominated debut album from Loyle Carner, Yesterday's Gone.
With Loyle Carner (real name Benjamin Coyle-Larner), what you see is what you get. There's no arrogance or unnecessary glitz to his music, just his passion, honesty and knack for personal, engaging storytelling. Harnessing his love for music and unique, spoken-word style of bar-spitting, Loyle's debut album Yesterday's Gone really is an absolute triumph. From the emphatic opening of The Isle of Arran, the jazz-infused nostalgia of Ain't Nothing Changed to the slick funk of No CD, the album packs punch after punch. However possibly the biggest punch of all with Yesterday's Gone is the emotional one.
You see the title Yesterday's Gone comes from a track Loyle's father wrote, one he found on an old tape in his basement which he actually even uses as the closer to the album. The reason this is significant is because Loyle and his father used to say they would one day tour the world together, however his father sadly passed away before they got chance. With this being the case, Yesterday's Gone also serves as a touching tribute to not just his father, but really all of Loyle's close family and friends. The record is mostly produced by his best friend Rebel Kleff who mixes the beats and also lends his vocals to several of the tracks; Sun of Jean features a piano sample from his late father as well as a poem from his mum and album highlight Mrs. C is dedicated to a friend of Loyle’s whose mother was sick with cancer. It is this sheer devotion that Loyle clearly has for his loved ones that really makes Yesterday's Gone such a special album and really does set it apart from all others released within the UK hip hop scene in 2017.
What's great about Loyle Carner's debut as well, is just how accessible and relatable it is - you really don't have to be a hip hop fan to enjoy this record. It's raw, emotive, brilliantly produced and, most importantly, contains stories and characters that will get you invested. Out of all the albums released this year, Yesterday's Gone is one that I definitely can't help but return to again and again.
Best Tracks: Mrs. C, The Isle of Arran, Ain't Nothing Changed

If “You Don’t Know” Loyle Carner Yet, Now Is the Time to Get Familiar
Tumblr media
Loyle Carner is no stranger to the UK rap scene. As a matter of fact, outside of the realm of grime heavyweights like Skepta and Stormzy, there are very few up-and-coming British emcees with a style as noteworthy as Carner’s. It is a style he flexed throughout his introspective Mercury Prize–nominated debut album, Yesterday’s Gone, and continues to hone with each new release.
Following the release of “Ottolenghi,” which marked the rapper’s first new release in over the year, “You Don’t Know” is yet another soulful portrayal of Carner as a bonafide artist with limitless potential. Featuring Kiko Bun and long-time collaborator and producer Rebel Kleff, Carner makes his way through the new four-minute track with an effortless cool that, over the years, has become a defining trait of the UK rapper. Existing between an old school hip-hop flow and spoken word poetry, every time Carner hits the track feels like a remarkably impactful moment. That is not to say Carner is the only one who makes “You Don’t Know” such a standout single, as the beat built around Bun is absolutely hypnotic.
Mirroring the precedent set by “Ottolenghi,” “You Don’t Know” arrives with a lighthearted music video. Featuring Carner’s mother, Jean, the video sees the promising UK rapper overseeing a series of his mother’s dates, including a rendezvous with British writer, dub poet, and Rastafarian, Benjamin Zephaniah. With a video that proves Carner’s skill set extends past the realm of poignant and powerfully-crafted hip-hop, it’s always good to know that if this whole rapping thing doesn’t work out, the UK artist could certainly double as a great spy or private investigator.
