I'm not writing this to get credit or help. But since Emelie and I have decided to not enter any more contests from now on I feel that I can finally talk about this. (Don't worry, we are super happy with all the other dance projects we have going on). My wish is only that the future Lindy Hop community will be even more open, tolerant and democratic, to make it easier for everyone.
Sweden is a democratic country but many Swedes aren't. And if your choices differ from the mainstream, you don't necessarily have the same rights and opportunities.
After ILHC this year, many people have congratulated me for the great Swedish success at both ILHC and Camp Hollywood. I just want to clarify than Emelie and I never represented Sweden in any contest.
When I started competing and teaching as a lead I was recommended to switch to following to become successful. And the "Swedish Dance sports association" that provides "Team Sweden" with coaches and sponsors tickets to ILHC doesn't ALLOW women to compete as leaders and men as followers. (I've emailed with them for about a year and the rules still haven't changed).
Our friend and legend Dawn Hampton, born in 1928, once told me that all men should learn how to follow and all women should learn how to lead - on and off the dance floor. Emelie and I also received great support from Norma Miller (The queen of swing), born in 1919, when we met her at Beantown last summer. I trust them more than I trust the Swedish Dance sports association :)
Well. This is unconscionable.
For a little back story to those not in the know: Sweden is one of the older Lindy hop scenes of the revival era, and many professional-level dancers in Sweden receive financial support to travel and compete abroad. Apparently that is limited to male leaders and female followers.
This is very strange to me because Rebecka DecaVita is one of the greatest leaders out there, and Gio Olla is a phenomenal follower. They are both out of Sweden, and I can’t believe that the Swedish Dance Sports Association would leave them out of the lineup just because of their gender.
The U.S. doesn’t have anything similar for professional dancers, but I know of at least one competition locally that doesn’t allow male followers or female leaders (SUCH BS). Arg arg arg arg arg.
