I'll admit I'm a little curious, who did you end up choosing to romance in CS4?

Also, have you seen this before at all? (No, Crow, Vivi, Rosine and Claire are not in there)

I am very much about Rean x Laura since CS1 and 2, so she was my choice. I just felt that she and Rean had the best chemistry back when I was going through CS1 and 2 due to having major common ground in their interest in swordsmanship and their similar personalities and that stuck, especially their Bonding Events in CS4.

But she did have some strong competition from the options, that being:

Fie (I just really love all of her Bonding Events in all of the games with how she just opens up to Rean, which makes her developing feelings for Rean understandable and really sweet),

Sara (I wasn’t 100% onboard in CS1 and 2 but her and Rean’s interactions and Bonding Events in CS3 and 4 really convinced me of their chemistry as a potential couple and that Sara really developed feelings for Rean now that they’re equals and no longer teacher and student),

Towa (just all of their Bonding Events in all 4 games are really sweet together),

Emma (for their Events in 2, 3 and 4, because I was a bit biased towards Emma when I was going through 1 because I thought she knew the full picture of what the hell was going on in 1 but didn’t tell anyone which frustrated me but in 2 it was explained that she only knew about the Old Schoolhouse being a trial to become Valimar’s Awakener and it would not have mattered if she told us or not which got rid of my frustration)

And Juna (admittedly she was frustrating at times in 3 but I found it understandable considering what happened to Crossbell, the SSS and her backstory for being kicked out of the Crossbell police academy for speaking out against that Erebonian instructor smearing the SSS, but her Bonding Events in 4 where she was slowly coming to realise that she has in fact fallen in love with Rean was really cute to, student-teacher thing aside)

Plus, I know she isn’t a romance option, but I just really love Rean and Claire’s whole relationship throughout all 4 games, that scene of meeting in the bar in 1, 2 establishing that whole using Rean as replacement for her little brother in their Bonding Event, how their interactions became awkward at the end of 2 and throughout 3 transitioning Claire to no longer view Rean as a replacement for her younger brother and their very complicated relationship in 4 where they are enemies because Claire is sided with Osborne but they still very much care for each other.

Plus, I found Rean’s interactions with Rosine really cute too.

Trying to figure out why I actually enjoy Trails of Cold steel (and don't hate Rean -- he'll never be my favourite character, but like. He's fine. I don't chafe at the idea of spending four entire JPRGs in his shoes) despite it being at times extremely Light Novel Nonsense-y.

Like, Rean's a dark haired, kind of generic looking, kind of generic personality'd average dude, who's super strong and skilled, and has a pretty huge proportion of the games' female cast falling over themselves for him, and that makes me roll my eyes a significant amount. He's very in the mold of weird wish-fulfilment light novel protagonists like Kirito and Naofumi, and I kind of can't stand those stories.

And thinking about it, I think it comes down to a few things:

-- Unlike those characters, Rean's actually allowed to fail, and to have other people pull his ass out of the fire. In fact, he does fail, a lot: The first game ends with him losing the final boss battle, badly, and having to run away and abandon his friends, having failed in basically every one of his goals. I'm two chapters in to Trails of Cold Steel III after having played 1 and 2 ages ago, and so far there's been three instances of Rean either getting in over his head or being either outsmarted or outgunned by the villains and needing someone else -- Laura, Kurt/Juna/Altina/Ash, and Alisa/Sharon -- to save him.

-- While he's always presented as being both academically gifted and a strong fighter, he's never the best in either. Emma and Machias are the top students in Class VII, and Laura, Crow, and Fie are stronger fighters in Class VII. Even when he catches up to Crow, Laura (and maybe Fie?) is still a better fighter than him. That's not even accounting for characters outside of Class VII, where it's always made pretty obvious that Sara, Laura's Dad, Rufus, and Aurelia are a ways above him. Which, again, you couldn't imagine from, say, a Kirito, where the only people allowed to be better are people who are somehow 'cheating.'

-- Women in Trails of Cold Steel are actually allowed to have their own goals and character arcs which aren't in any way related to him (in fact, every female character in Class VII has their own thing going on). Laura wants to hone her sword skills and be a worthy successor to her house, Emma has her conflict of ideals with Vita, Fie has her ongoing attempts to find a new role for herself after being a child soldier for most of her life, Alisa is struggling against a legacy that she sees as inextricably tied to a controlling mother she doesn't really understand. These are arcs which are wholly independent of Rean, and he doesn't do much in them apart from provide encouragement. When there are breakthroughs in these arcs, it's never because of him, he's usually just present and being supportive. The only female character whose arc really ties into Rean's at all is Juna's, and even then it's more about her complex feelings about going to study with the military that annexed and occupied her home.

-- I feel like most Light Novel Heroes come with ... pretty emaciated supporting male casts so that the audience doesn't have to cope with the earth-shattering idea that their surrogate might have to compete with other guys for the affections of Insert-X-Number-of-Women. Think about your Kirito, whose only real male supporting cast member is Klein, who's significantly older than the rest of the cast; or your Naofumi, whose male supporting cast is entirely composed of -- well, we're meant to think of them as the most awful people around, but considering that a lot of the time that manifests as them going "We think it's bad that you're a literally slaveowner who bought a child slave, Naofumi," I'm not sure how well that works. But the supporting male cast of Cold Steel is pretty good!

-- Unlike the Light Novel protags he's clearly cribbing from, Rean does have some stuff going on beneath the surface. Not ... much, but there's some inner conflict there about how he's meant to reconcile looking after the people he cares about with the fact that he and all the people he cares about are a part of Imperialist Nightmare State Erebonia, which can and will use him as a tool of imperialism whenever it can. It's a conflict that often puts him on the wrong side. When Cold Steel III starts, he's fresh off being coerced into assisting with Erebonia's annexations of Crossbell and North Ambria, both unambiguously awful things that he's now an accessory to, one of which has put him in direct conflict with another Trails series protagonist.

-- Other characters make fun of him. Like, whenever he makes some dramatic and sentimental speech, you can bet there's a solid 30% chance another character will go "Oh fuck, oh god, he's speechifying again, someone stop him, someone stop him."

All of which combines to make him and his role in the story as LN-style Audience Surrogate ... basically fine. Like, it's fine. He's not my favourite character, in fact I think he's probably my least favourite member of Class VII because in general the character writing for the other Class VII members is pretty strong, but I'm not grinding my teeth while playing him, even if I do roll my eyes at times.

- Doomguy turned around too slow, but Rean managed to get in front of the demonic beast.

- Before the demonic beast even got close to hitting Rean, Doomguy picked up Rean by the neck and threw him out the way.

- He was tackled to the ground, but Doomguy slammed his wrist blade into its eye, ripping the eyeball out of the socket upon exit.

(Rean) “SLAYER!”

- Doomguy waved his hand off, as if motioning to say “It’s nothing.”

(Rean) “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t know what I was-”

- Doomguy put a hand on his shoulder, holding it firmly and nodded his head.

You know what I find interesting? I mean obviously despite the fact that two years ago he was just a bastard-son and now everyone from the nobility wants to throw their daughters on him. He is currently the acting duke, not the actual duke. With Rufus technically speaking still available, everyone should be thinking that at some point, Rufus would come back and take his “rightful” position as Duke Albarea. But apparently, at this point, everyone is pretty sure that Jusis will be the next official Duke, or otherwise they wouldn’t want their daughters to be married to him so badly.

Its really such a waste that they didn’t hint at his feelings for Millium in this Bonding-Event. It would have been perfect and much more in your face then the other things they did. But I guess he wasn’t quite there yet...

I love this game, its characters and pretty much everything about it, so whatever you want to do will be great I am sure. New timeline mysteries and missing memories are always welcome where it makes sense. Expansions of scenes in-game (I’m always a sucker for that period of time for Jowd and Cabanela between the end of Ch.9 and showing up at the Justice Minister’s office).

Alternate timelines and what-ifs are cool to explore. What if Alma was able to stick around as a ghost,powered, or otherwise? What if someone else like Cabanela went back instead of Jowd to the new timeline?

Fluff, comfort, family found or otherwise and friendships are always a go. Jowd family and extended family--as they absorb the people around them--good times. Spooky ghost shenanigans, mysteries in the night. Holiday fun times. Sissel and/or Missile doing stuff with anyone here is great. I’m a softy for Cabanela and Missile, our two loyal guardians. But what about Alma and Missile? Or Jowd and Missile? Etc.

Always down for various combinations of Pigeon Man with Cabanela, Jowd and/or Kamila. Or PM with someone less expected like Alma! Or Sissel! Or Missile! Post-Canon Yomiel and PM interaction of some sort?

Animal shenanigans and fluff is great.

Crossovers with other fandoms are cool, like Final Fantasy (FFVI and X). The Goose (of Untitled Goose Game) may not be welcome by the characters but I welcome them wholeheartedly into all crossover madness.

 Heheh, alright, I get to talk about my ToCS OTP for Rean! Alright, here we go.

4) Do you prefer canon ideas or do you have your own headcanons for them? - I’m gonna have to say I prefer canon ideas. I don’t really delve into headcanons all that much, to be frank. Doesn’t bother me, though, as the canon approach with these two is good for me.

5) Favorite canon moment of them?- Hmm, this is tough since the romance routes for everyone are technically non-canon. So if we’re going with the regular canon, one of my favorite moments would probably have to be when Sara calls Rean after he gets his routine with the Student Council squared away. She basically tells him that she can already tell that he’s trying to find himself and gives him some pretty sound advice for that task. Despite her appearance and not knowing him for that long, she basically already has him pegged and is hard at work at helping him out. Another favorite moment of mine would probably be the *SPOILERS, I GUESS* kiss she gives him on the cheek in CS3… Because it’s CANON!

6) Least favorite canon moment of them?- …Hmmm… Come to think of it, I can’t really think of many canon moments of these two that I would say are my least favorite. I legit can’t think of any right now, sorry! (Though, that might be because I’m tired as all hell at the moment).

14) Is there a pairing that you think rivals them?- In general terms, for the record, I don’t really compare ships from different fandoms to each other. It’s just never been a thing for me. In Cold Steel terms, I’d have to say not really. But Rean x Laura IS a close second. With Rean x Fie being third, and Rean x Towa being fourth, as well.

19) On an estimate, how many posts have you made about them? - Huh. I guess this would probably be the first one, actually. I don’t really have much in the way of ability to make my own posts and there isn’t much on this ship out there in general, sadly. Guess we’re in the same boat on that front, huh?
