The Chinese Oppo Electronics Corporation was registered in 2004. Today, the company produces premium consumer electronics, as a division of BBK Electronics. The cost of A5s and A8 varies in the range of $ 150-170. The price of A91 reaches almost $ 300 in China.

F Series

The models in this series use the innovative AI SelfieTune integrated face recognition technology. The company first used it in an Oppo F5. Oppo F7 (Selfie Expert) uses the second generation of AI SelfieTune 2.0. In particular, it recognizes and optimizes 296 reference points on the face, which exceeds the first version by 20%. High performance, efficient throttling (algorithm to protect the processor from overheating by skipping work cycles), high battery life, DC Dimming and wide color coverage are pros of this model. Unfortunately, the model does not have an NFC module (Near field communication) and a microSD slot. Model costs $ 350-400. The Oppo K5 targets the Indian market and costs about $ 100 less.

Of course, it has a set of traditional sensors.

Oppo Reno

The company is positioning Oppo Reno as a sub-brand, with high hopes for it. Oppo Reno and Reno 10x Zoom were the first models of the new series.

In terms of price and specs, the Reno 10x Zoom competes with the Huawei P30 Pro. Smartphones work under Android 9 Pie with ColorOS 6 interface. Like K3, Oppo Reno uses a 10nm 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 (2 x Kryo 360 Gold (Cortex-A75), 2.2 GHz + 6 x Kryo 360 Silver (Cortex-A55), 1.7 GHz) with Adreno 616. That’s why we have sorted through hundreds of inexpensive smartphones in order to rank the best options that you can buy unlocked without monthly fees and, importantly, without a two-year contract.

No, these aren’t the best smartphones available in Australia, so you won’t find the newly-announced Galaxy S20 Ultra among them. However, it is a selection of our favourite budget and mid-range smartphones. If you’re looking to pick up a decent handset for not much cash, these are the top cheap phones your money can buy – even on a budget.

1. Realme XT

Realme is here to fill the void Huawei left behind

With its surprise arrival in Australia last year, Realme shook up the local budget smartphone scene by offering high quality handsets at prices that seemed too good to be true. Though it originated as a subsidiary of Chinese phone-maker Oppo, the company has since gone (mostly) independent, managing to garner a reputation for exceptional value in little-to-no time.

Realme XT is currently the company’s flagship phone in Australia, and it’s so good that it may cause you to completely rethink the importance of premium handsets. For less than AU$500, the Realme XT offers a Super AMOLED display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a decent Snapdragon 710 chipset and a quad-camera on its rear that boasts a 64MP main sensor.

Add to this a pair of gorgeous colour-shifting gradient finishes, a large 4,000mAh battery with fast charging capability, the option to update to Android 10 and the inclusion of a headphone jack, and it’s hard to fault the Realme XT. Granted, ColorOS is far from our favourite smartphone interface, and some water resistance would’ve been nice, but at this price point the Realme XT is very easy to recommend.

2. Samsung Galaxy A50

Samsung brings premium looks to the budget arena

Beautiful design

Good battery life

Camera could be better

Not the snappiest phone

Bringing Samsung’s penchant for beautiful design to the budget phone arena, the Galaxy A50 definitely has a premium look and feel despite its AU$499 RRP. Offering a gorgeous 6.4-inch AMOLED display, the Galaxy A50 immediately appears impressive upon first sight.

Running Samsung’s updated One UI interface over the Android 9 OS, the Galaxy A50 admittedly feels a little sluggish in comparison to the company’s flagship handsets, which we suppose is expected given that it’s powered by a mid-range Exynos 9610 (10nm) chipset.

Still, we love that this budget phone can boast a triple camera setup that includes a fantastic ultra-wide lens, though admittedly you do have to put a little work into getting good shots with it. We also love that the phone still offers microSD expansion and a 3.5mm headphone jack – two things that are becoming less likely to be included in future smartphones.

3. Moto G8 Plus

A good smartphone that lacks pizzazz

Doesn’t feel premium

Motorola has become one of the most reliable manufacturers of budget smartphones in recent years – a fact that’s perfectly exemplified by its Moto G series handsets. We’ve come to greatly admire the way that Motorola’s G series consistently delivers quality features at a fraction of the cost of your average premium handset.

Admittedly, the Moto G8 Plus doesn’t look as pretty as some of the other handsets on the list, sporting a plastic build and rounded corners, but in terms of functionality it is has the edge on many of them. That being said, we wish its OS was a little snappier to use. Still, we like its big, bright display and appreciate the inclusion of a headphone jack – something that’s becoming increasingly rare these days.

With its triple camera setup, the Moto G8 Plus is also capable of taking really nice photos. However, while the phone is able to record video in the ultra-wide format, it isn’t able to take regular pictures that way, which is quite strange if you ask

4. iPhone 7

The cheapest iPhone you can buy

Great performance

Good low-light camera

Dated design

Middling specs

The iPhone 7 might be the oldest iPhone (along with the iPhone 7 Plus) still sold by the company, but that also makes it the cheapest iPhone that’s currently on offer, making it ideal for those who’d like to play in Apple’s ecosystem without paying exorbitant amounts of money.

On paper, the iPhone 7 is outclassed by most of the newer Android handsets on this list in terms of camera and specs. However, Apple’s A10 Fusion chip offers the handset great performance, and in the hand it definitely retains an undeniable sense of quality despite its age.

While it may have been replaced by two separate generations of iPhones, with a lower price tag and the latest iOS 13 software on board the iPhone 7 is still very much a viable option for those looking for a slice of Apple’s smartphone pie.

A great option for gamers

It’s got a gaming-focused chipset in the Mediatek Helio G90T, offering exceptional performance on titles like Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG. That’s backed by a hefty amount of RAM, a huge battery and the inclusion of liquid cooling.

Looking at its specs on paper, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro almost seems too good to be true. However, it is significantly let down by its MIUI software and an abundance of bloatware. Still, a bit of tinkering (and a lot of uninstalling) can significantly improve the phone’s overall experience, making it a great option for the value-minded gamers out there.

It doesn’t even seem that long ago that I reviewed the Realme 3 (review). A few months later, the Realme 5-series has debuted in India and this time both the regular and Pro variants have landed together. Leap to quad cameras is the tagline for the new phones, which is more interesting in the case of Realme 5 due to its price. Even if we leave aside the marquee feature for a second, the phone in its shell and substance does give a better first impression than the predecessor.

But, when you’re spending your hard-earned money, first impressions aren’t enough. Gladly, Realme 5 was at our disposal for the past few days and we have tested the device inside out. So, without any fluff, here is our no B.S. review of the Realme 5.

Realme 5 Price and Specifications

If you’re familiar with the Realme design choices, you would feel at home with the diamond cut design back. This time, the polycarbonate back has a glossy gradient finish and subtler pattern. The device is hefty and has a large footprint even if we consider the big battery inside. We recommend using a protective case to protect the glass-finish back from scratches and dents.

The 3D curved design confluences to a 6.5-inch HD+ display with a “mini drop” notch that delivers a large screen estate. Realme claims the V-cutout is 30% smaller and maybe it is. However, the same can’t be said about the thick chin at the bottom.

You could unlock the phone using Face Unlock or using the capacitive rounded scanner at the back. The latter is well within reach and quick to unlock.

Diving into the display settings, you can adjust the color temperature. If you’re not a notch fan, you can opt for a full black status bar instead. Outdoors, the display is fairly legible and even indoors, the color reproduction is quite manageable. You also get Night Shield, to protect your eyes from the blue-light emission from the display, especially when using the phone in a dark environment.

Realme claims a 3-layer splash-resistant design which should ensure protection against accidental spillage. It’s not IP68 certified, though. So, for now, it’s neither here nor there. The 5 still has a micro-USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. Ahh, the presence of an audio jack leaves a smile on our face. That said, the output from the speaker is underwhelming and gets easily blocked when held horizontally.

In nutshell, the phone does look well built and pleasing to the eye, which in itself is a biggie for the budget.

Realme 5 Camera Review

Realme 5 is a significant upgrade when it comes to the camera specs. It sports a quad rear camera setup, wherein a 12MP main, an 8MP ultrawide, a 2MP portrait and a 2MP macro sensors make the cut. This opens up new avenues for mobile photography from this phone.

So, we did the same and snapped photos in different environments. Let’s peek into the camera samples now.

The phone can shoot up to 4K resolution videos. Realme has baked in Electronic Image Stabilization for front as well as back.

So, if you ask how’s the camera – We would say its good enough, but nothing to write home about.

Realme 5 Review: Performance and Battery

Realme 5 uses a relatively newer chipset, the Snapdragon 665 coupled with up to 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. It is powered by a sizeable 5000mAh battery that is accompanied by a 10W charger. Yes, although the battery endures long, filling it back is a drag.

Realme 5 banks on the aforementioned hardware to yield good performance more often than not. It manages to drive PUBG and the likes at Balanced settings with minor hiccups. We didn’t face any major heating trouble whilst gaming, which is a plus in our review.

Realme has offered various software-based optimizations to bolster your gaming as well as memory and battery management. Further, the Color OS interface is tweaked with rounded icons, a new Private Space for hiding your personal contents and an enhanced Hotspot management feature.

All that’s appreciated. Still, we don’t dig the heavy animations and proprietary software elements which mars the overall experience. Thus forth we yearn for the alleged Realme OS, which is rumored to be close to stock Android.

Realme 5 review verdict: Should you buy it?

Realme has listened to the fans, as is apparent from several improvements we see on the 5. For what it’s worth, its a definite improvement on the precursor. We are still no fan of the software treatment. But, that might not resonate the same with you. If you find things like lack of HD+ display and fast charging as nitpicking (which we very well understand for the budget), this should be a clear winner.

Not every person is a phone reviewer or particular about his/her phone needs and for those, there is a lot to like here like – the long battery life, ample memory cum expandable storage, and a multipurpose camera.
